The simple, big picture here is this.
Earth is a simulation, no big deal, no one knows, and it doesn't affect your daily life. The dark twist here is you're being watched every moment of your life. Someone is taking bets on what you'll do next, someone is profiting from your despair.
This takes mental illnesses to a whole new level - you are not insane, you are connected. Those extra thoughts? The chat streams. You feel like someone is watching you? They are.
Here the crazies are really enlightened, and we are being boxed in and managed in order to keep the secret.
It's the early 2300's, and technology has evolved in many ways. We spend most of our time inside a virtual reality, called Gafford's Life and Senses Simulation, or GLASS. AI is integrated into our daily lives. Any technology you could have imagined, exists.
Every household has a farmer, as humanity is quickly starving to death. If you're a household of one, you're a farmer. If you have two farmers, the additional income is converted to virtual currency as cash no longer exists in the Americas. Some countries have retained a form of cash currency, but they are slowly moving away from it.
In this reality, there are no real races. Due to the sun damage, everyone has taken on a permanent tan and bleached hair, unless you are lucky enough to not be a farmer. Those who work inside of GLASS have much less sun damage and fewer freckles.
