Howard University
Veritas et Utilitas
"Truth and Service"

Founded in 1867, Howard University is a private, research university comprised of 13 schools and colleges. Students pursue studies in more than 120 areas leading to undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. To date, Howard has awarded more than 120,000 degrees in the arts, the sciences, and the humanities. The historic main campus sits on a hilltop in Northwest Washington blocks from the storied U Street and Howard Theatre. We are two miles from the U.S. Capitol where many students intern, and scores of alumni shape national and foreign policy.

Howard has grown from a single-frame building in 1867 and evolved to more than 89 acres, including the six-story, 400-bed Howard University Hospital. Since 1974, it has expanded to include a 22-acre School of Law West Campus, a 22-acre School of Divinity East Campus and another three-fifths of an acre facility in northeast Washington and a 108-acre tract of land in Beltsville, Maryland.

Howard prepares men and women to advance social justice and the preservation of human liberty. In each of its 13 schools and colleges, Howard University seeks to develop technically competent and morally committed individuals. Regarded as one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the world, current enrollment approximates 11,000 students from virtually every state, the District of Columbia, and more than 70 countries. The University traditionally has had the largest gathering of Black scholars in the world.

The Élégant Travels Express

In 1977 Belmond’s founder, James B Sherwood, purchased two vintage train carriages at a Monte Carlo auction.

Recognising a renewed appetite for sophisticated travel, he searched far and wide to unearth stately rail relics in private gardens, museums and railway sidings. Cars from famous vintage trains, including Le Train Bleu and the Rome Express, deserved a noble return to service, but required a specialised level of craftsmanship to be restored. Luckily a handful of artisans were found for the task, and they began the painstaking process of returning the carriages to their former glory.

Following years of careful restoration, the iconic midnight-blue cars finally rolled onto the rails in 1982, ready to escort guests in peerless luxury on a classic journey around Europe

Accommodations
On a train where peerless luxury class is the standard, the exquisite Grand Suites command an almost euphoric sense of grandeur. Be swept up in a sense of unbridled indulgence, previously known only to travel royalty of the golden age. Bathrobes, slippers and luxury travel collection by Temple Spa are provided.

Twin Cabin - During the day each Cabin is configured as a lounge with a banquette sofa, footstool, small table and an original washbasin cabinet with hot and cold water. At night it becomes a cosy bedroom with an upper and lower bed, complete with soft towels and crisp linen.

Cabin Suite - Like a twin cabin but for indulgent single use. As you board the train your cabin is made up into a daytime sitting room, with a velvet banquette running down one side of the carriage and no arguments about who gets the window seat. A vanity unit complete with sink, plug socket and razor points and all the amenities (kimono, slippers, amenity kit and bottled water) as twin cabins. At night time your single cabin converts into a single lower berth bed snuggly made up by your steward while you are enjoying dinner in one of the three dining cars.

Grand Suites - Introduced in March 2016, when one of the original carriages was completely stripped down and redesigned to house just three grand suites. And grand they are indeed with double queen-sized bed, separate sitting area complete with private bar and an Elegant Express first – en-suite shower room with brass piped shower, Murano glass sink and wooden seated toilet. It would be tempting to never leave your grand suite, with a private steward shared between the three suites at your beck and call. It’s also possible to private dine in your grand suite and every amenity has been provided – from the plush white waffle dressing gowns, exclusively designed for the grand suites and yours to keep as a souvenir as you disembark the train – through to Dyson hair dryers and Elegant Express branded cut-crystal glassware.

Bar Car- The Art Nouveau interior of the Elegant Express bar car creates a wonderful evocative atmosphere, enhanced by the baby grand piano. The large windows allow one to absorb the beautiful vistas. Enjoy a variety of refreshments until late into the evening.

Dining Cars - Dining on board is an unforgettable delight. All dishes are freshly prepared on the train by skilled French chefs, with the finest supplies taken onboard during the train's journey. Lunch, dinner and brunch are served by waiters in one of the three individually styled Restaurant Cars: Cote d'Azur, Etoile du Nord or L' Oriental. Breakfast and afternoon tea are served to passengers in the comfort of their cabins.

Champagne Bar

The Lalique Car of the Elegant Express has the Champagne Bar. The rest of the Lalique Car is a Lounge which also has board games available. The layout of the easy chairs and sofas allow one to see the delights of the passing scenery whilst enjoying Champagne, whether or not one plays the games.

Boutique - The on board boutique is located at the rear of the Lalique car. What better way to remember this memorable journey, than to enjoy a gift from the Collection Elegant Express.

Catering- European cuisine on the Elegant Express is freshly prepared in the train's kitchen. Fresh ingredients are taken on board at stops along the route. The set-menus are an inclusive part of your trip. Drinks and à la carte options are also available at an additional charge. Chefs will be delighted to cater for any specific dietary requirements, provided a detailed request is made at the time of booking.
