OLYMPUS
The entry point into Lemuria is a platform not unlike an oilrig, which supports the tip of the launch device and serves as access to Hub. It floats on the waves with a tube protruding into the air at a 45 degree angle. The landing facility features both a docking bay and helicopter port, much of the communications infrastructure, and a pressure suite. Here new arrivals are carefully acclimatized to the depths before traveling down a sealed elevator to the Hub.
HADES
At a depth of 100 metres, on the continental shelf, you arrive at the Hub, or Hades. This is the heart of communications in Lemuria - the origin of the shuttle trains and primary radio uplink. Orientation is taken care of here, but Hub has a relatively small staff; everyone is assigned before they even get down here and quickly move to their operational hab.
PROMETHEUS
Located about a mile from the rest of Lemuria, to the east, Prometheus station is a geo-thermal energy plant. The first permanent structure to be built down here, Prometheus sits on a geothermal vent and spins vast turbines with the intense heat. Also primarily where drones, spare components, and most engineering supplies are stored, with almost every engineer in Lemuria doing a couple of months here at some point in their tour. Regularly receives visits from the geology teams.
EROS
A small, mostly automated station near the edge of the abyssal trench. Manufactures shells for the space gun.
ATHENA
Primary research facility close to Hades, just to the west. Administration is also located here, and in terms of population it's the biggest station, well stocked with labs and equipment.
HEPHAESTUS
At the edge of the abyssal trench, Hephaestus is the main robotics and materials research and assembly facility. Physically the largest station, full of heavy machinery, experimental drones, and submersibles. Allows access to the abyssal sites via either superheavy submersible vehicles (SHSVs) or reinforced elevator.
TARTARUS
Deep abyssal facility. Receives packages from Eros and Hephaestus, houses maintenance crew, and supports Artemis station. Considered a high-risk posting at around 4k metres beneath the sea.
ARTEMIS
Base of the space gun. Here payloads are assembled and fired. Minimal full-time staff.
WARDEN
The margin for human error in operating Lemuria is astonishing. To reduce the chance of catastrophic failure, the entire facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence. Only the relevant administrative and scientific staff - all of them highly placed on the corporate ladder - know how it works, exactly. PR statements say it's a soft neural network; capable of learning, but within strict mission parameters. Explicitly runs on Asimov's Laws, although most suspect it's far more complex than that.
1. Do not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. Obey orders given by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. Protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Politics In The Wider World
Lemuria is a symbol of international cooperation and stability, marking a new golden age. It was the launch platform for the first Lunar colonial probe and will be upgraded in the next eight years to accommodate the Mars terraforming project.
It's built on some unfortunate realities, though. As humankind approached post-scarcity and technology supplanted human labour, not every nation could catch up due either to financial or cultural problems.
While places like Scandinavia, India, and Britain enjoyed pseudo-socialist utopia of guaranteed personal income facilitated by advanced 3D printers and plentiful renewable power sources, countries like Ireland and the USA became slaves of the modern world - what little unskilled or semi-skilled work that remained necessary was a point of pride for the impoverished, malnourished wage-slaves of hypercapitalist rulers, while Ireland was the first to essentially have their government purchased wholesale by corporate interests.
These particular horrors are beginning to recede, but the world is closer to being a better place mostly by extremes; as one part improves, another suffers, and only now is parity starting to look realistic.
Corporations, being adaptable entities, have at least become more benevolent where many traditional forms of government have collapsed.
Life on Lemuria
Get used to your MunchPrint machines. Every cafeteria on the station has one; just insert three blocks of your preferred mix of ingredients (broth, noodles, and fish, for example) and wait five minutes for your meal to be printed.
Everyone is expected to spend some time in the gym - healthy, happy employees are a desirable asset.
On arriving at Lemuria, all employees receive a medical exam and any minor treatments deemed necessary. Contraceptive care is mandatory - Lemuria isn't equipped for childbirth, so staff with female reproductive organs receive a cheap and efficient implant, while those with male reproductive organs receive regular fertility inhibitors (your contract absolves Lemuria of any civil or criminal charges if this effect persists beyond your tour of duty and/or dosage allotment).
Lemuria staff receive a free Netflix subscription and access to the station Kindle library.
The Pilot Seat
A comparatively recent industrial technology, the pilot seat is a kind of neural uplink device allowing the user to remotely control robots as though directly inhabiting them. It's an incredibly user-friendly device which allows a person to perform complex mechanical tasks without lengthy training to use the robot and helps engineers to apply their professional ingenuity when a task cannot be performed within traditional guidelines.
The precise mechanisms are patented to an absurd degree and tampering with pilot seats is grounds for immediate termination of contract.
