A self powered system designed to help vanguard shock troopers absorb the initial impact of assault. The power supply can only keep the suit operational for a limited duration, especially if additional systems are installed; making a quick release mechanism and later asset recovery necessary. Still many Vanguard consider the added protection indispensable.
Shoulder mounted platform: (see above)
While initially designed as a guiding system to assist in air drops, more experienced squads have taken to replacing said system with another weapons platform to increase their raw firepower. Hardwired into the suit these systems only increases the drain leading most soldiers to choose single use weaponry rather than lasers or rail gun designs in a vain effort to squeeze every last second out of their protective shell.
Grav Chutes:
Iconic of the drop shock troops this piece of equipment doesn't allow true flight but instead offers enough thrust to enable controlled air drops or astonishing leaps onto the battlefield. Sadly it suffers similar power constraints to the mech suit, making it an effective tool for shock and awe tactics but less useful for sustained operatios.
Plasma Rifle 'Dyrnwyn pattern'
A plasma rifle modified to better suit the needs of vanguard shock troopers. It boasts higher penetrating capabilities than the automatic rail rifle at close range but is prone to overheat and warp its barrel if used continuously, thus mandating short bursts.
Grenades
While a great number of standard issue grenades are available Leif prefers to employ fragmentation or even flash bang grenades, valuing the added confusion over raw destructive capability. Often employed to buy time for other forces to catch up or retreat once the mech suits have run out of juice.

Personality: Leif is generally a straitlaced and honest man with a bit of a temper and a penchant for the direct approach. While this does not mean that the values of patience and subterfuge completely elude him, displaying those virtues certainly seems to require a greater effort on his part. At his best one could describe him as fearless, loyal and dedicated to the mission. At his worst Leif is reckless, proud and a bit of a glory hound. While he feels connected to a certain brotherhood within the vanguard and especially within his squad, many would describe him as surprisingly approachable. It is not uncommon to come about him drinking side by side with members of other classes or races, boasting of the vanguards latest success or eliciting similar tales out of others.
History:
Hailing from Sweden, Leif enjoyed a relatively normal childhood. Or at least what could be considered as such under the circumstances of the ever present threat of invasion. His mother's side had always been very patriotic, supportive of humanities cause so to say. They could trace their military lineage back generations and it was a great source of pride within the immediate family.
As such it was not overly surprising when Leif volunteered for the vanguard program. Muscle augmentations, harsh training regime's and strict nutrition plans shaped the boy into a warrior who was ready to stand against humanities greatest threat.
The young mans enthusiasm and open personality quickly won him many a comrade within his unit and the first few easy missions helped foster those bonds. Of course even 'easy' missions accumulate casualties when facing an entity such as the Qin, but it was nothing like that day.
The heavy guns faltered once a few delta's had somehow made it behind the lines and started wreaking havoc. Without the rain of destruction to cover their assault, the formation fell apart... a hasty retreat was called but there was no order, no hope of escape and just when they were about to be overrun 'Helios Squad' descended.
That day Leif was saved and earned a debt he'd never be able to repay. After a number of transfer requests and much back and forth he was finally able to join Helios, but they'd taken numerous losses by then, almost none of the original members remaining in action.
With their preferred role on the field of battle the squad is known to 'cycle through' members quickly.
