Backgrounds

Breeding â—â—â— [Kenji is the son of an excellent line of exalts and the markings of his aspects are visible on him]

Mentor â—â— [Kenji’s mentor is an old family friend, Cynis Akeno. An elder Wood aspect, adept in sorcery, martial arts and medicine, currently living in the Threshold away from the obligations and useless Realm politics as he tends to say. He took an interest to young Kenji and tutored him personally for many years, which explains why Kenji joined the Heptagram so late (he’s 20 years old and exalted at 12). He thinks highly of Kenji and awaits eagerly for him to complete his studies so he can return and share with him his experiences as well as reach a higher level of personal, both corporeal and spiritual enlightment and become a true Dragon blooded and defender of Creation from its manifold threats].

Artifact â—â—â— [Kenji’s family has allowed him to use certain pieces of equipment from the family vaults, in order to learn the proper use of his heritage’s power , to become more responsible and to succeed in his endeavours in Heptagram and afterwards. His mentor has gifted him with a set of exceptional healing needles as well as with a green jade hearthstone amulet and magnificent green jade wrackstaff that seems to have power over the ebbs and flows of essence of other living creatures.]

Artifact â—â— (Clarification: the first artifact rating refers to the artifacts he received from his mentor, while the second, to the ones given by his family).

Manse â—â— [Kenji is attuned to a couple of his family’s manses across the Threshold and posseses up to 3 levels of hearthstones producing a variety of effects].

1) Stone of quick thought (â—) This red-and-silver-banded oval allows the bearer

to think faster and more clearly than usual. This stone provides the bearer with a +1 bonus to all Wits rolls.

2) Stone of Healing (â—)This hearthstone is a healthy earth-brown, mottled with spots of green. It is round in shape and could have come from the bottom of any common streambed, were the colors not so vibrant. The stone enhances the medical talents and knowledge of any character who bears it, making an unskilled character into a skilled surgeon and a gifted physician into a brilliant healer. A character bearing this stone has three dice added to all Medicine rolls made by her player.

[This hearthstone comes from a wood-aspected manse belonging to his mentor]

3) Memorial Iron (â—) This hearthstone looks like a smooth nugget of polished iron. Its bearer can vividly recall (and mentally relive) any particularly positive and will-reinforcing memory. This recollection fires her resolve, enabling her to recover one point of temporary Willpower each day. This is in addition to any Willpower recovered through the normal, daily Conviction roll.

Artifacts and Equipment

*Each of the first 3 artifacts bears one of Kenji’s hearthstones*

Special: Each successful hit that inflicts damage on a living creature, steals 1mote of essence from it and transfers it to Kenji.

2)Dragon tear tiara (Artifact â—â—)

Another common decorative item during the First Age, these tiaras and circlets were forged from the magical material favored by their intended wearer and incorporate the same motifs used in hearthstone amulets. Regardless of the material from which they’re crafted, all dragon tear tiaras provide the same benefits.

Each has a setting for a hearthstone located directly over the character’s caste mark. Dragon tear tiaras require the commitment of two motes of Essence to activate the hearthstone and the tiara’s own magical powers. When attuned, the tiara adds one die to the character’s Perception pool. The character instead gains a bonus of three dice when she is attempting to perform geomancy, to use astrology, to detect spirits or to otherwise perform tasks that require occult sensitivity. This does not include rolls for sorcery.

3) Jade hearthstone amulet (Artifact â—)

4) Wound mending needles (Artifact â—â—â—)

This artifact is a set of eight needles the length of a man’s ring finger and the diameter of a stalk of wheat. There are two needles made from each magical material other than soulsteel, and they are all stored within a small case of green jade. To open this case, the owner must commit five motes of Essence to it. If any of the needles are missing or broken, the user need merely spend one Willpower and five additional motes to cause them to reappear intact inside the case. The user can use these needles to affect a patient’s Essence flows in a profound manner, allowing him to heal a patient’s wounds with exceptional speed. Characters can also use these items to heal themselves.

By spending one mote per health level he wishes to heal, the user can automatically heal a patient’s bashing damage. This damage heals at a rate of one health level every minute. If the user removes the needles before the healing is complete, the healing immediately stops. If the user spends three motes per health

level, he can cause the patient to heal lethal damage. This damage heals at a rate of one health level every 15 minutes. The user’s player must make a successful (Perception + Medicine) roll with a difficulty of 1 for his character to correctly place the needles. The difficulty of this roll increases to 3 if the user is attempting

to heal himself. Failure at this roll means the motes are wasted and the character must try again.

Despite the time required for healing, this artifact can even heal patients who are dying when the user begins to treat them—the artifact’s energies keep a patient alive until he can be fully healed. This healing ceases the second the needles are removed, however. If the user spends a point of Willpower and five motes per health level that he wishes to heal, he can even cause aggravated damage to heal, though this damage heals at a rate of four hours per health level. As a result, most physicians attempt to heal aggravated damage while their patient sleeps. Healing aggravated damage is quite difficult. The user’s player must make a successful

(Perception + Medicine) roll, difficulty of 3 (5 if attempting self-healing). Fortunately, while they are being used, the needles eliminate all pain and cause the patient to feel calm and relaxed.

This device can heal any wound or injury, including damage caused by poison, but it cannot repair crippled or missing limbs. If used to heal damage caused by poison, this artifact also causes the poison to instantly cease damaging the patient, preventing further poison damage from occurring during the time this artifact is being used upon the patient. In addition, it completely purges a poison from the patient’s body

once it has healed all damage the poison has already inflicted. If used before a poison has caused damage, the needles need be used for only the time necessary to heal one health level of that type of damage. Like other healing artifacts, this device will work on any living being who had at least one parent born in Creation.

5)Blue jade breastplate (Artifact â—)

Soak 6L/4B Hardness 2L/2B Mob.pen –0 Fatigue 0 Att. 2m

6) Collar of dawn's cleansing light (Artifact â—)

This artifact comes in a variety of forms—studded bands, chokers, torcs, collars, delicate necklaces and the like. Any piece of neck adornment is appropriate, and these items are still quite common today. Many of the Dragon-Blooded in the Second Age own and wear them when possible, not just for their useful properties, but also to show off.

The purpose of this collar is to keep its wearer clean in every respect. She could spend weeks living beneath a rubbish heap and emerge at the end as though she had just spent hours preparing for a grand ball. The artifact negates all penalties to Social rolls that would be applied due to the character being dirty or unkempt. Attuning to the collar extends its powers beyond

the Exalt’s clothing to her physical body. The artifact’s cleansing light adds two dice to (Stamina+ Resistance) rolls made against disease or poison. The collar requires the commitment of one mote of Essence to become active.

Appearance and Demeanour

Ledaal Catala Kenji is a young man in the start of his twenties and full of energy. He appears calm and reserved, as a result of his martial discipline but is always ready for action, due to his training and his natural curiosity. Tall and well built, might not exactly fit the typical sorcerer appearance neither seem as a young schoolboy. He wears light, practical clothes that don't restrict movement and in case danger is expected, his breastplate. Two amulets are hung from his neck, both exquisite works of artifice and a small satchel containing his healing equipment and the rest of his needed possessions is hung across his upper body, from his shoulder. His wrackstaff, the "Verdant Twig" is in his hands almost at all times.

As a character, he's reserved but compassionate and usually maintains a friendly disposition towards most people. This demeanour changes in critical moments or cases of danger, his determination and sense of responsibility taking over to ensure the safety of others and himself.

He's honest and sincere usually and he admittedly has a soft spot for beautiful ladies who tend to be reserved and not exaggerating in their appearance and behaviour. It is his personal criterium that he believes will help with his quest to find the "queen of his heart" as he told his mentor prior to his departure.

Background

Twenty years ago, one of the families belonging in the Great House Ledaal of the Scarlet Dynasty, and more specifically to the Catala household, welcomed its newest member in Creation. It was a boy and the name given to him was Kenji, after his grandfather who had died before his birth, fighting to defend the Realm against the threat of the Anathema and their followers.

Ledaal Kenji was always a special child, with an inquisitive mind, asking every conceivable question to all those around him and being on the lookout for the newest interesting activity for him to do. As part of a great dynastic House, Kenji's family did all in its power to provide him with an excellent upbringing, educating and training him adequately, to prepare him for the desired moment of exaltation and the subsequent life as a member of the dragon-blooded host.

A descendant of an excellent bloodline, Kenji exalted indeed at the age of 12, as per his lineage into an Air aspect, a fact considered auspicious by his family and their advisors, while conducting his meditation exercises in a mountain near the household under the surveillance of his tutors. His life then took a new spin, upwards. It's already known that House Ledaal takes care of its descendants and even more of those who demonstrate the gift of the Elemental Dragons. They carefully guide their members to perfection and greatness. Extensive advice is given and care is taken to ensure that the young ones will pursue their natural aptitudes to the upper limit and surpass their progenitors in all fields, especially those regarding scolastic endeavours, occult studies and other esoteric knowledge.

Young Kenji, possessing a very low boredom threshold, much like Ledaal, the founder of their Great House and daughter of the Empress herself, as well as like most of the other Dynasts of the same lineage, showed early on an interest for many and varied fields of study. His instructors, took great delight in the way he seemed to devour every piece of relative information and always dive headlong to new objects of study or new methods of training.

The training and education regime he followed, was based on a simple, yet very effective principle. "A healthy mind in a healthy body". As a dragon blooded, scion of a Great House and aspiring defender of the Realm, Kenji had little room for error and so did his instructors. Their effort was to make him capable in mind, spirit and body while satisfying his increasing curiosity and present him as a true man to his family. Kenji listened to them, learn from them and expanded his horizons even more.

He was gradually becoming a true seeker of forbidden mysteries, incorporating teachings of all the elemental dragons in his life and character and aspiring to become like them and reach a higher level of enlightment. Thinking in grand scale and possessing a unique vision like Mela, steadfast and determined to uphold the sacred traditions of the Realm and the Immaculate Philosophy like Pasiap, learning humility and proper essence use by the example of Hesiesh, pushing himself to the breaking point and trying to excel in as many fields as possible like Daana'd and nursing all that help the Realm and its people, while protecting them by infectious factors, as Sextes Jylis.

During his studies in his family's household, Kenji met his mentor Cynis Akeno and a relationship of friendship, respect and guidance was forged. There was a heated discussion, those days, among his parents and relatives, regarding which secondary school he should attend and when would be the proper time. Cynis Akeno, a long time friend of the family and esteemed member of the dragon blooded host, about to retire from active duty in the Realm's affairs, made them a proposition. Young Kenji could go with him and train extensively for a few more years and then he'd advise them which academy would best help to develop his talents.

His parents accepted, deciding to delay his enrollment in one of the Realm's prestigious academies for a few more years and Kenji went along his mentor to explore the Threshold and learn more of himself, of Creation, of mystical arts and of the wonders of the world. His training took place mostly in his mentor's wood-aspected manse, situated on a beautiful location, between the edge of a forest and the banks of a river, a true wonder of natural beauty.

Akeno helped him perfect his abilities in martial arts, refining them in a unique union of body and mind, unbound by the strict process and regime of a certain style, choosing to let him develop his inner understanding, grace and coordination instead. When these lessons were internalized fully, Akeno presented him with a wrackstaff, made of green jade, with elaborate patterns running along its length and a setting for a hearhtstone in its middle.

"This is to defend your life from those who'd see it harmed and to replenish your essence reserves during battles. Essence flows through Creation and into the living beings inhabiting it and as a keeper of knowledge and faithful guardian you can tap into this power. When you succesfully deal damage to your opponents the force of life exercised by the will of Sextes Jylis, as bound in this staff, will grant you additional essence and deplete your enemies' reserves".

After his martial studies reached their peak, Akeno told Kenji that it was time to move to another subject. "To inflict harm upon someone else is an act of pain and one unsettling the natural order of things. Also the suffering of the world is already too much without others adding to it. Thus, you should balance it. Learning the secret arts of healing the body and mind is essential to this. As this essence flows, it can heal and restore that which is now sick or hurt. Watch carefully and i promise you that you'll never regret it. Many are the warriors across Creation and even more those who'd inflict harm upon others for personal gain or a variety of other purposes. But the true service to all people and living beings is to give back life and health, to ease pain and suffering, to watch those in need recover and the feelings of happiness and gratitude depicted upon their faces. Always be wary of using your martial skills but never hesitate to use your healing techniques. Life must be preserved and the health of the people is paramount to the survival of Creation as a whole. For when that diminishes, history has taught us what great evils will befall us".

Adhering to Akeno's teachings, Kenji became an adept healer as well. He learnt the basics of natural herbs and their abilities, the procedures of preparing remedies from them, how to use needles in order to bring back balance to a patient's essence and many more. When Akeno was confident of his student's skills they travelled around the Threshold, utilizing their combined experience and capabilities to help many villages and small towns. Also during these travels, Akeno began to discuss with Kenji the more abstract concepts of Creation, advanced essence manipulation and told him stories of how the great exalted of old reshaped the world to their will.

Slowly, he inducted him to the field of the occult studies and showed him that to experienced exalted, Creation exists in "as is" the same as in "as it should be". "By expanding your understanding of Creation you begin to understand the rules and laws that bind it. The same principles upon which it was created and formulated. By doing this and with rigorous training, study and tremendous exertion of will, you will eventually become able to utilize these laws to change certain aspects of reality and make them adhere to your vision. You must be very careful while doing so, but this is a higher call and i'm confident your soul will walk these paths without worry".

After another period of Kenji studying the occult and applying all the knowledge he previously learned, Akeno decided that it was time for him to move on and join the Academy of the Realm that could further guide him to enlightment and a higher degree of understanding, the vaunted Heptagram. The choice was well received from his family, since House Ledaal members always had an affininity for mystic arts and sorcery and Kenji was therefore seen as a worthy descendant and a much promising youth.

Prior to his journey to the Academy,Akeno gave him a set of wound-mending needles and allowed him attunement to his manse, giving him a stone of healing. These tools were to help him ease all pain and suffering and restore those in need back to health by grace of Sextes Jylis. His family gave him instructions and a couple of useful artifacts for any occasion and sent him on his way to become a true asset for the House and the Realm.

Kenji, feels a new path is opening before him and is eager to explore it. Many things are said for the Heptagram and he can't wait to confirm them. Even though older than the average student, he hopes his experiences will help him overcome any obstacle and achieve his goals.

As of lately some thoughts about his future have surfaced on his mind, regarding his marriage issue. He knows his family takes these matters very seriously and also that becoming a sorcerer upon graduation will limit his chances to certain Houses. Thus he expects to meet an interesting and beautiful lady at some point during his studies and perhaps move on from there.
