MERFOLK SPECIES

Merfolk have the ability to walk on land for a limited amount of time. The transformation process is painful, but not unbearably so. Most need a few minutes to recuperate afterwards.

In addition to gaining a tail when transforming into their aquatic selves, they also grow gills at the side of their neck for breathing.

Though merfolk are common knowledge and even normal in Lanquarie, there is a rule that their existence never be formally recorded. One can write songs and stories about them, but evidence of their existence is prohibited.

They possess pale but tough skin. Unfortunately, this means that when they do get injured, it often leaves visible scars.

While merfolk can indefinitely remain on land, they will need to refresh themselves with water frequently to prevent from drying out.

All merfolk possess hauntingly beautiful singing voices, and even the way they speak is melodic. They were once captured for this very reason, and why Lanquarie is wary of visitors.

Merfolk can consume the same as humans.

You can tell what color their tail is based on the their hair.

Merfolk can generally be divided into two groups: saltwater and freshwater. The latter usually possess more subdued colors and more delicate skin. On the flip side, they’re able to live without water much longer than their seawater counterparts.

They are able to breed with humans. If the child can transform, they’re merfolk. If not, they’re human. There are some slight differences in those of mixed blood however, particularly in their skin and dry tolerance.

CITY OF LANQUARIE

Lanquarie was originally an underwater city, and majority it is still merfolk’s land… water. The area which humans inhabit is only about 30% of area it covers.

One might notice slabs of stone connected by rope on the floor when the land is dry. Come high tide, these become the bridges that connect the towers.

Despite the pool of water being potable, most opt to drink the water once it’s been filtered out in water systems inside the tower.

The underwater city melds with a coral reef and extends far and wide. Merfolk from all corners of Eliond pass through here, as it’s a place of worship for the Sea God.

Numerous parts of the city are still submerged, even in the ‘human’ areas. Staircases that lead straight into the ocean, walkways surrounded by sea.

Lanquarie simply alternates between seasons of heat and cool, neither of which are very extreme. The island generally maintains the same temperature throughout the year.

Bathing is usually communal, with only the upper echelons owning their own private baths. Certain pools are designated expressly for this purpose. It’s not recommended to drink the water that cascades down from these towers.

There is one primary place of worship, located to the North of Lanquarie. This is where the sacrifice takes place, as well as declarations on what age one should sacrifice their child.

Some parts of the city are inaccessible during low tide, and the opposite also holds true. What used to be walls during low tide become bridges when the water rises, while rooms drowned in water clear and open shop.

Atop each tower is a pool of water, purified for human consumption via magical means. Rain water or seawater; whatever it originally was, once it’s in the pool it’s potable. One is free to drink the water that flows from them.

A dock for ships exists, but visitors are sparse and it’s rare that they stay for long.

Few humans venture down below, but spells for breathing and mingling with merfolk do exist. Most just opt not to as it’s all too easy to lose track of time in the water.

LORE OF LANQUARIE

It’s said that Lanquarie is under the protection of the Sea God, the creator and protector of the oceans and all that inhabit it, including the merfolk.

Not everyone followed the sacrificial mandate. With every ignored summon, the water level rose and threatened to drown the humans.

It used to be the city of merfolk until Eustace Yuon terraformed the island above it to make it habitable for humans.

This is why Lanquarie builds upwards, with its high towers and cascading man-made waterfalls.

It’s sad that he invoked the wrath of the Sea God and was forced to make a deal in exchange for peace. All who carry the last name of Yuon must sacrifice their eldest child with every generation.

CULTURE OF LANQUARIE

The Lanquarie population is wary of foreigners. They have commissioned some sailors to regularly trade for anamantium with, but otherwise they keep to themselves.

It’s said that those who overstay their welcome in the city get lost at sea.

One of the biggest celebrations in Lanquarie is Dalamhati, where the water raises to almost almost the top of their towers. It happens primarily at night. Humans get on small rafts and place tiny boats lit with a lamp as a tribute to the Yuon and all souls lost to the sea.

Walking around barefoot is the norm in Lanquarie. Through centuries of adaptation and cross-breeding with merfolk, humans here grew tougher skin than their mainland counterparts.
