Kada-class Patrol Ship

Essentially a Swan rebuilt for military purposes, a Kada is often the first line of defense for space navies, or even used for policing the space lanes, derided as "traffic cops" but tending to focus more on anti-smuggling and contraband. Kadas are intended for light patrol duty, focusing on speed rather than strength, on the theory that stronger backup can be summoned if necessary. They are most well known for their magnetic harpoons which allow them to latch on to almost any ship, reel it in, and send a boarding party (often the entire crew minus the pilot, who stands watch for incoming ships, reactors building up for self-destruct, and other surprises). Although the grappled ship's weapons are supposed to be disabled before closing, a Kada has multiple airlocks to allow the crew to approach from many angles just in case a "disabled" gun turns out not to be.

Kada

  • Repair: 4
  • Speed: 55/110mph
  • Maneuverability: +2S (Lore 2, Sail 3)
  • Endurance: Kadas carry supplies for three months, so long as they are provided with weekly maintenance (usually from the crew aboard). If in arrears for 4 weeks, its Maneuverability falls to -1, then -2 if in arrears for a 5th. 6 weeks behind, and the ship can no longer move under its own power - not to mention, barely sustain life support - until it is repaired.
  • Crew: 2/1
  • Cargo: One ton of cargo, plus comfortable cabins for both crew and up to six passengers (usually gunners, boarding specialists, technicians, or observers; parts of the Empire assign a political officer on a rotating basis to prevent attachments). In the event of prisoners, standard procedure is to lock them in their quarters on the captured ship, using their ship's life support to sustain them while towing the ship to port.
  • Armor: 8L/12B
  • Health Levels: Ux6/Mx4/Cx4/Ix3/D
  • Weapons: Two vehicular blasters (as blaster rifles, with Damage 9L, Range 100, Ammo 150), one on each side. One front-mounted magnetic harpoon launcher (Speed 6, Accuracy +0, Damage 0, Rate 1, Range 200, Ammo 1, Tags 2, A; takes a miscellaneous action to reload; if it hits, instead of inflicting damage, it attaches a magnetic grapple on a cable - often ending in an articulated "foot" with a gecko-like surface, to latch on to nonferrous surfaces too - that holds with a Strength+Athletics of 10 until pried off, turned off by the launcher operator, or the cable connecting it is severed (which happens if the cable takes any L or A damage: it has no soak, but an effective DDV of 5); every round it is attached, the ships can be pulled 10 yards closer, and in a chase the vehicle with the launcher moves as fast as the grappled ship if it would have moved slower), with 5 spare harpoons and cables.
  • Other Notes: Kadas swap out Swans' observation equipment for enhanced sensors, allowing them to peer inside ship hulls and get a general idea of the cargo. Attempts to do so are at a -2 external penalty (for no visibility), assuming the target ship has taken no measures to jam or interfere with these sensors (which are automatically detected as such, and are taken as proof of smuggling activities - though Kada captains are supposed to give a warning to disable these measures before boarding or opening fire).
