Biography: James Olsen was a normal kid until Metropolis was attacked by aliens. On his Earth, there was no Superman and the aliens destroyed much of the city before other heroes were finally able to push the aliens back. His parents were killed and James, amidst the chaos and debris, was left to fend for himself. Realizing the world needed heroes, he began training himself physically. At the age of 14, James found a man who was willing to train him in martial arts. At 18, when most kids were heading off to college, James headed to Japan to further train himself in martial arts and swordsmanship.
He returned home at 24 years old and began utilizing his skills to stop criminals. Another hero confronted J one day, a guy by the name of Ray Palmer. The two began a partnership and worked together to stop bad guys across the country. Eventually, J was gravely injured by a metahuman. Ray did the only thing he could and injected nanomachines into J. Their sole purpose was to treat the wounds and aid J's body in healing itself. It worked but the machines also began increasing all of J's bodily functions, including strength and speed. Ray upgraded the nanomachines over the next few months to ensure they were safe to leave in J's body. Ray also replaced J's sword with his current one.
