The One and Only
Monica sat in the back of her parents car, contently playing with two dolls on her lap. The first had just proposed to the second and now she was amidst a serious debate as to whether the should get Roses or tulips for the wedding. Her parents on the other hand were arguing in the front seat. They had travelled for 8 hours so far in search of the sunset valley retirement home after getting word that Monica's grandmother was in a dire state. Monica was none the wiser, she was simply content to continue her fantasy in the back seat, as many six year olds are. She didn't even pay heed to her parent's argument which was rapidly escalating in volume. The couple were tired and on edge, having gotten lost within the final few miles of the journey. Instead of reaching the prestigious retirement home they were stuck in the small town of Oakridge, looking for any passers by to ask for directions. Unfortunately the majority of the town were either at work or school so the streets lay deserted before them.

Monica had toned out the argument but that didn't mean she was completely oblivious to it, so when it stopped completely she lifted her large eyes to the front seats, curious as to why the heated conversation had come to a close. Her little mouth parted in shock as she noticed that neither of her parents were in the front seat, indeed they weren't anywhere. Monica looked around frantically, unaware of the sheer speed the car was still travelling at. Her desperate gaze was met by the tall looming building of Oakridge high as the car jolted over the curb and smashed into the side of the building with a loud smash and a sickening crunch.

ROSA MAY

Rosa bit on the end of her pen as she ran over her essay for any final corrections. The 17 page doccument had taken her the better half of a week to write, and another fortnight yet to finalize. Now she was minutes away from handing it in and she still wasn't confident it was as good as it could be. Her final grade was dependant on this essay and she was determined to bring home her mother some good news.

"Alexandria Lucas?" The old balding professor read out from his register, his voice tired. It was obvious he wished he was somewhere else. Rosa's classmate Alex stood up from her chair and took the dozen or so steps to the front of the room where she handed the man her essay and turned on her heel back to her seat. The professor took the essay wearily sighing further when he noticed its disappointing thickness. Deciding to scold the girl later the man continued with his list. His eyes lit up a bit as he read the next name out, recognising one of his better pupils. "Rosalind May" He spoke even managing to sound half invested in his job. Rosa straightened the papers and rose to her feet, her heart beating as she took the few final steps in her journey to a flawless grade. Time seemed to slow as she held out her paper to the professor, smiling as she looked into his eyes. The man reached up to take the essay but as his hands seemed to close around it Rosa watched before her very eyes as he simply vanished. Rosa stood there astounded, still holding out her essay. The few other students who noticed began to mumble and talk between them, trying to figure out what had just occurred.

"What the fu-" Rosa asked loudly only to be interrupted by a loud crash as the building itself seemed to shake.

MARCUS MAY

Marcus watched through the glass front of the KFC as a car passed by quickly, the driver and the front passenger seemingly at each other throats. He let out a low whistle as he flipped the burger in front of him. The work was tedious and slow but it helped pay the bills and wasn't far from home so he was content to do it. Bradley, a thirty something co-worker of his was serving an elderly customer who looked as if she had already had one whopper to many. Other than that the store was empty. Despite the bright sun outside many people either had work or preferred the comfort of their own homes. Marcus looked down and noted with a smile the thin patty was done, lifting it of the grill and sliding it onto a tray with three others before carrying it over to Katie, another junior like him who was currently engrossed by the rhythmic thudding of heavy bass music pumping through headphones and into her ears. Katie was one of those girls who was almost a walking cliché, dark hair, make up and riddled with piercings, though with a heart of pure gold. Marcus was uncertain of the relationship between the two of them but always made sure to get some fun out of it regardless.

"You know your supposed to be making sandwiches right?" He shouted, lifting one of her headphones causing the girl to jump three or so feet in the air. An impressive feet considering her little over five foot frame.

"Fuck! I'm working on it chill!" She shouted back hitting Marcus as hard as she could on the arm. Marcus just shrugged off the hit and laughed as Bradley marched over to them, his face the picture of rage.

"We have a customer you little shits! Now I don't want to hear language li-"

Marcus and Katie stared at the spot in which Bradley once stood which now held nothing but empty space. Katie craned her neck to look over towards the counter where the customer had also seemingly vanished.

"Well... I guess we don't have to worry about serving them" Katie half whispered, her eyes wide with shock. The two were broken out of their daze by the sound of a dull crash. They shared a panicked look before Marcus vaulted the counter and burst out the door, Katie slightly behind, choosing to take the more conventional route. Marcus' gaze was met with smoke rising from behind some of the houses, in the direction of the school.

"Rosa.." He said to himself briefly, starting off at a run towards the school. Katie started to go after him before hesitating at the thought of leaving the fast food joint unattended.

"Wait! What about the store! Who will... Fuck it." She murmured running after Marcus.

Ridiculously sorry for the delay! Finally under way!feel free to post an intro post.

(P.S. Couldn't help myself making a new character, working on Katie's CS
xD )

Gone.

In the middle of their conversation, just like that, Karly's manager vanished. His overly professional clothes, the noise from the iPhone in his hand, the overwhelming aroma of his cologne, all gone in the blink of an eye.

Karly didn't know how to react, at first. It was beyond believing, something she just couldn't bring herself to comprehend. A full grown adult just vanishing like that? It had to be a trick of some sort, maybe a dream. In response Karly pinched and punched herself, trying to do anything that would wake her up from the dream state. Unfortunately nothing worked, no matter how hard she tried Karly couldn't wake up from her dream. Was it a dream? Was she just hallucinating, going insane? Or did it have something to do with-

No, there was no way what Kayla could do had anything to do with it. Whatever her weird powers were, making a grown man vanish was well beyond her control. Still though, calling her to check wouldn't hurt.

Except when she pulled out her phone, there was no signal. That was impossible, the lighthouse was practically next to a cell tower, she
always had five bars. But there was nothing. Karly peeked outside for just a second, trying to look and see what was going on, but nothing seemed different. The sky was still blue, the world wasn't falling apart, and the tower seemed to be blinking along like usual.

Karly was afraid. Her boss vanished and the cell tower suddenly stopped working? She had to get help, find someone who could explain things. Upon inspecting the rest of the lighthouse, she found that the janitor had gone missing as well. His bucket was still full of warm, soapy water, and the floor near it was reflective and wet. It was like he disappeared in the middle of cleaning the floor. He didn't go down the stairs or elevator, Karly would have heard him regardless. She was tempted to see if he jumped, but there was no way. Jorge was a happy man, he seemed to enjoy working as the local do-it-all maintenance guy.

The only thing she had left to do was drive home, to try seeing if her parents had some sort of explanation. She had no TV, and a phone without data was barely more than a paperweight. They could explain things, maybe. Tell her why everything seemed to simultaneously shut down.

She grabbed her keys and headed for her Pathfinder, hoping she wouldn't run into any more insanity on her way home.

Kayla Benally

Gone.

Dr. Sandra Pentaghast, the principal of their school, vanished right before Kayla's eyes. Faster than Kayla could react the woman vanished, somehow leaving the room in less than a second. Kayla tried to make sense of it, but she had no way to comprehend what she saw. Immediately she left the main office in which she was acting as student secretary and headed to the hall. That idea wasn't much use either, all she saw were younger students poking their heads out, all with the same question: What happened to our teacher?

Every time her answer was the same:
"I'm sorry, I'm looking for them too. Wait in your rooms." the situation only seemed to get more strange as she entered the halls for upper level students. It was already intimidating, seeing as most students in the hall she was in were seniors over 18, mere weeks from graduation. Thinking about a future like that was hard enough on the Chumash Indian girl, but it only became more difficult as she found most of the students gone.

After checking all three Senior rooms, she found that almost every senior had vanished, along with the teachers, principal, and seemingly every other adult. What was going on, where was everyone? The future valedictorian of the class of 2017 had no idea. Her next response was to find the leaders of the students: It seemed most students below senior year hadn't vanished, below sophomore level classrooms were full.

It didn't make sense. Kayla was tempted to hit a locker as she tried to understand what was going on. Was it the annual senior prank? No, that was a month ago and the remaining seniors seemed to have no clue what happened. Not to mention Kayla
watched the principal disappear. It wasn't a prank, and it wasn't some stupid trick: Something was going on.

Part of her was tempted to find Rosa or Kaneda, the only two people she bothered getting to know well. The rest of her, however, wanted to know what was going on, to figure out why every adult seemed to-

Adult.

"Hey, how old are you all?" Kayla was out of breath, having run all the way back to the paired up seniors. They looked surprised, at first, but all of them gave the same answer: 17.

Was that the variable? Anyone 18 and older was picked, and everyone else remained behind? No, that made no sense. Intelligent or not, Kayla knew everyone would call her a liar and moron for acting like she had all the answers mere minutes after... Whatever happened.

She wanted to blame herself, at that moment. Kayla knew that she wasn't normal, that what she could do was far from sane. Karly believed her, but just because her twin sister was content with insanity didn't mean the world would be. Was the universe rejecting her, and by contrast everyone her age and younger? Did her abilities cause it, bring about whatever vanishing act had gone on?

Kayla decided she couldn't tell anyone. Someone else would realize that only adults vanished, someone who wasn't her. Someone who had no chance of causing that vanishing act. Someone who could handle the attention, being in charge.

The temptation to find Rosa and Kaneda only seemed to increase inside of her as she thought more and more.

It took James longer than most to notice. He had been reading The History and Decline of The Roman Empire, and had been ignoring the teacher's lecture on... well he didn't quite know.

When he did notice, he immediately left the building. He wanted to check the outside, see what had changed.

The first thing He noticed were crashed cars. The cars looked as if someone had fallen asleep at the wheel, but there was no one in the front seat.

In some he saw blood, probably from infants in the car with their parents, he assumed. It was a true shame, but there wa nothing he could do.

More than likely, his parents were gone too. Realizing that, he got on his bike, aND headed homeward.

Benny Neilson

Benny had been sitting in class doodling, probably about to get called on, and just like that, the teacher had disappeared. He probably wouldn't have noticed if not for the cease of incessant droning that he had come to recognize as his teacher. He looked up from his drawing to check, noting the pandemonium his fellow students seemed to have been thrown into headfirst, before flipping his hood up and returning to his drawing. It only hit him a few moments later that his teacher had vanished, and he stood up abruptly, shoving his drawing into the pocket of his shorts before looking up and heading for the door to find someone who might know if this meant he could go home or not- never mind his home was across town and would be a long walk.

Then there was a crash, and the school was shaking. He grinned. The world was ending, and he wanted a front row seat. He ran in the direction he thought the crash came from, wondering what he would see.

Kaneda Conner

He was slowly walking back to class when it happened. He didn't even realize something had happened until he reached the halls with classes going on and had kids come up to him asking what was going on. They seemed to be coming up to everyone who passed them, even each other, hungry for information. He managed to get out of them that the teachers had vanished quite suddenly, and that no one seemed to know why, and then he was running to his class- this was a time to be taking notes. Somebody needed to keep track of all that was happening. There was a crash that hit the school, jarring him, but if anything he hurried faster to his classroom. He needed a notebook and some pencils- they were about to be put to good use. As soon as his bag was in his hand, he headed towards the crash, not bothering to grab his math notebook, because it seemed fairly obvious to him there were things more important than school going on.

He wondered briefly where Kayla was, and noted to talk to her later, to try and see if she knew anything.
