In a devastating turn of events for the community of peaceful Mutants, Charles Xavier dies, suddenly and unexpectedly. Rumors run rampant in the human and mutant communities alike. Magneto points the finger at humanity, humanity points the finger at mutants and the X-Men point the finger at the Brotherhood. Eventually, evidence is uncovered (though some would say it was planted) pointing to the guilt of the Brotherhood and Magneto. Leaders from both the X-Men and the Brotherhood agree to an amnesty so the true killer of Xavier can be brought to justice - regardless of which agenda they followed.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS LEADING UP TO CURRENT

5 years ago (2010): The "Cure" is made widely available to mutants. Offering those adversely or physically affected by their mutation a chance to permanently remove their mutated genes, returning them to human "normalcy". Erik Lensherr and Anna Marie (Magneto and Rogue) are among those mutants who are cured. Professor Charles Xavier continues to push for human / mutant coexistence, but despite the removal of the Brotherhood of Mutants as a threat, humankind is wary of alliances. After all, more than 50 years of animosity and questionable incidents have led to much distrust.

[OOC: Game note - following the events of Days of Future Past, events in X-Men 3: The Last Stand have been significantly altered. Most of the Dark Phoenix events never manifested, and Jean Gray, Scott Summers and Charles Xavier both lived through that timeline of events. For the purposes of this game, we must consider that X3, while filmed in 2006, takes place in a fictional, slightly accelerated timeline and place its events in Game Year 2010. Real World Events in Our World will be roughly paralleled in The New X-Men, along with several fictional events.]

4 years ago (2011): Erik Lensherr is the first mutant to overcome the effects of the cure. He is able to reassemble many of the Brotherhood and they return to their ways, decrying the cure as a failure and, thus, proving their place as homo superior. Whether other, less powerful mutants are able to overcome the effects of the cure remains to be seen, even years later.

3.5 years ago (late 2011): In a devastating turn of events for the community of peaceful Mutants, Charles Xavier dies, suddenly and unexpectedly.

Most of the prominent members from both sides agree to meet on the island nation of Genosha, but something goes horribly wrong and, in an unprecedented tragedy, the island is destroyed, and mutant leaders Jean Gray, Scott Summers, Erik Lensherr and Raven Darkholme are killed, along with many, many others.

In the following weeks and months, other prominent mutant leaders die or go missing. The X-Men, X-Watch and X-Factor all lose key members, even the Brotherhood and the subterranean group the Morlocks see their numbers greatly reduced. With no clear leadership, and no real way to unite or coordinate, remaining mutants are scattered and left to their own devices.

3 years ago (2012): It is only a matter of time before desperate times lead to desperate measures by desperate mutants. Striking out, mutant backlash is on the rise, and several cities nationwide see their mutant populations suddenly swell into nearly open rebellion. Following a shocking incident in Mississippi that left a city block destroyed, several people dead, and a mutant in jail, the U.S. Government is forced to declare martial law in more than a dozen cities across the country - including major metropolises as New York City, St. Louis, Detroit and Chicago. They call on the newly formed Monolith Group - a private security firm - to maintain martial law and track down offending mutants and bring them to justice.

East Coast: It is during a time of mutant uprisings, and in the vacuum left behind by the absence of the X-Men, that the Asgardian god, Loki, leads the Chitauri on an invasion of Earth. The attack is focused entirely over New York and is only barely repelled by the efforts of S.H.I.E.L.D and the coalescence of the Avengers. The gods Thor and Loki, however, return to Asgard, and while Tony Stark and Bruce Banner remain in New York, S.H.I.E.L.D agents Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff depart with Steve Rogers.

In the aftermath of the Battle of New York, however, martial law is declared. The private military firm, the newly reorganized Monolith Group, is sent in by the U.S. Government to oversee the enforcement. Much like in other major cities around the U.S. where Monolith is actively dealing with the "mutant problem", Monolith begins to wrest control of the battered metropolis into it's iron grip.

2 years ago (2013): It does not take long for the Monolith Group to outstrip their federal mandate and begin "detaining" even non-mutant associates and family members of suspected mutant "terrorists". They even begin detaining suspected mutants as young as 8 based on a highly suspect computer program that claims to be able to detect a dormant mutant gene before it awakens. Scientists within the Monolith Group develop new and increasingly powerful weapons, weapons that are effective at dealing with mutants and humans alike. The U.S. Government begins to realize the terrible mistake they have made, but are nearly powerless to curtail it.

East Coast:
(OOC: While events of Iron Man 3 have not been significantly altered, the push for Tony to drop the Iron Man persona is stronger, here. He does not pursue building another suit and, so, is unprepared for later events.)
Tony Stark battles with The Mandarin and soldiers that have been injected with the Extremis serum. The damage to the city is minimal and Monolith does not become involved, though several samples of the serum disappear from AIMs headquarters in the aftermath of the battle. Despite winning the battle, the Iron Man suits are destroyed and Tony Stark resigns both as the hero and as an Avenger. He still retains Bruce Banner as a consultant, however.

1 year ago (2014): The first City Barriers are powered up in Monolith controlled cities, dampening and nearly eliminating mutant powers within them and effectively removing the mutant threat within those cities. Riots were quelled nearly overnight and a short-term "peace" was bought. It, however, only served to provide more time for Monolith to continue their sweep and collect missions.

To help combat the Monolith's rise to power, covert agents within the government began to reach out to known sympathetic mutants to create Task Forces for mutant / human agendas. These Task Forces were charged with wresting control back from Monolith, but they were largely unsuccessful, never finding a solid base of operations or the "perfect storm" of like-minded mutants able to gel into a team the likes of the original X-Men.

East Coast:
(OOC: This represents a significant departure from the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and marks where, in the MCU timeline, the story fully deviates from. Future MCU movies are highly unlikely to impact the story here.)
At S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters, the Triskelion, new helicarriers are being built under Project Insight. Steve Rogers becomes suspicious of the project, and Director Nick Fury is about to confirm his suspicions when he is killed by a sniper's bullet. Rogers, Romanoff and Sam Wilson eventually uncover that S.H.I.E.L.D has been infiltrated at the highest levels - and possibly beyond into the government itself - by Hydra. The insidious plot revolves around a Hydra-developed a data-mining algorithm that can identify individuals who might become future threats to Hydra's plans, and then to use the Insight helicarriers to sweep the globe, using satellite-guided guns to eliminate these individuals.

Rogers and Wilson manage to override the first two carriers, but Wilson is killed when the Hydra agent Winter Soldier disables his suit and sends him plummeting to his death. Rogers pursues the Winter Soldier to the third helicarrier, but the ship is semi-disabled. Rogers and Winter Soldier are caught in an explosion aboard the carrier, both are blasted free of the ship. In a last ditch effort, Natasha Romanoff moves on S.H.I.E.L.D's upper echelon, but her ruse is seen through and she is killed. Agent Maria Hill has the first two helicarriers fire on each other, but the third is unaffected by her control. The satellite guided guns fire and potential Hydra threats worldwide are killed where they stand, unsuspecting of any danger. Among the dead are Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Dr. Stephen Strange, T'Challa and many, many others. Those that survive only do so because of the efforts of Rogers and Wilson to bring down the first two carriers, and Rogers is responsible for enough damage prior to his death that the third carrier crashes into the Triskelion and is destroyed, along with the tower itself, in the resultant fireball.

In reaction to such a widespread, nearly unstoppable attack, Monolith is able to erect the first City Barriers in Monolith controlled cities. Ostensibly a defensive shield of sorts, it is also capable of dampening and nearly eliminating mutant powers within them and effectively removes the mutant threat within those cities. Riots were quelled nearly overnight and a short-term "peace" was bought. It, however, only served to provide more time for Monolith to continue their sweep and collect missions.

Most of the Avengers - and nearly all of their S.H.I.E.L.D support staff - are dead, presumed dead, or missing. Asgard is silent and unreachable. While Hydra's Insight project was something of a failure, it's successes were devastating ones and the true depth of Hydra's infiltration has still yet to fully reveal itself. Hydra returns to the shadows, but S.H.I.E.L.D has been fully discredited. It's identified Avengers heroes are decried as traitors and those that speak up in their defense are quietly silenced. It isn't long before the memory of the Avengers is a tarnished one, and a sense that Hydra's tentacles reach into the highest echelons of the government begins to grow.

So to, ominously, does the power of Monolith, until a group of mutants in Detroit begins to attract the attentions of those that might wish to do good again, and to fight the corruption within, from without.

CURRENT TIMELINE EVENTS

Sept. 2014: Chapter 2: The Rescue - In the city of Detroit, most of the mutant uprising is detained and the City Barrier is soon to be fully completed and put in place. In order to corral and control the most active and powerful mutants within the city, a massive sweep and collect mission is launched and many powerful mutants are gathered up, put in temporary restraining cuffs to neutralize their powers. They are kept in horrid conditions and regularly abused.
