.the eleven clans.

Saionji Nadeshiko

Tora Shigenori
Tora Takeshi
t o r a

Specializes in: Shi-gai exorcism through weaponry

Tora, also known as the Tiger clan, is a formidable onmyouji clan who values valor and power. They are distinguishable for their large, strong builds and tower in physical strength. Members of the Tora clan are trained in some form of combat at a young age. Upon entering their teens, they move on to specialize in a form of weaponry. Choosing a weapon to specialize in is very important to a Tora for this signifies the gaining of their "fangs". Once they have mastered the weapon chosen, it is purified by priests, allowing them the ability to cut down Shigai.

Aside from Shi-gai exorcism, the Tora family also creates the finest purified swords in Amestuchi.

Specializes in: Spiritual Barriers

The Miyamoto clan is a clan which was once part of the Fujiwara clan. It specializes in seals but after developing their own techniques in forming spiritual barriers, the clan has long set itself apart from its sister clan. Members of this clan are usually trained to sharpen their focus and concentration, as both are needed to maintain stable barriers. A Miyamoto's barrier can trap Shi-gai and troublesome Ayakashi of various sizes depending on the user's abilities. A purification barrier can be used to exorcise Shi-gai or vanquish Ayakashi back to Ukiyo. Large scale barrier exorcisms are usually carried out by at least three onmyoujis.

The barrier technique used by Miyamoto onmyoujis are a safe-guarded secret. It is stressed to be used wisely.

西村

Nishimura Mizuha
n i s h i m u r a

Specializes in: Purification techniques

The Nishimura clan is located in the western villages of Ametsuchi. It is known for purifying humans who have been tainted by harmful Ayakashi, and occasionally Ayakashi who have been blighted. (*A blighted Ayakashi is not a Shi-gai but it is the early signs of an Ayakashi ready to turn Shi-gai. If caught in this stage and purified of its blight, an Ayakashi can be saved). Purification is not to be mistaken as exorcism as Shi-gai are beings who are incapable of being purified. Aside from humans and ayakashi, purification techniques also extend to haunted or cursed areas.

Before a temple is built, the Nishimura clan is usually called to purify and sanctify the area. They usually use Khakkhara staffs to aid them.

t a k a h a s h i

Specializes in: Preserving the border between Ukiyo and Ametsuchi

The Takahashi clan, also known as the Bridge, was one of the first clans to specialize in onmyodo. It was the first clan to fully study and confirm the existence of the Floating World, later naming the two realms Ametsuchi and Ukiyo. Because of its extensive history, the Takahashi clan is known as the clan with the most knowledge on onmyodo techniques; though it is not known to specialize in any one form. The clan focuses more on keeping peace between the two realms and furthering its studies and research in the spiritual plane.

The clan is also stationed at the main Gateway of the two realms. It is their duty to ensure that nothing crosses over and that it never opens.

Over the years, the Takahashi clan has dwindled in strength and numbers and are struggling to return to their former glory.

藤原

Members of Fujiwara
f u j i w a r a

Specializes in: Talisman crafting.

The Fujiwara clan was one of the first clans to create and input the use of talisman into onmyodo teachings. Their talismans are known to be the best out of the eleven clans with each talisman having its own intended functions. Talisman types include: tracking talisman, shiki talisman, ofuda (exorcism and purification tailisman) and protection and warding talisman. The Fujiwara clan is the main supplier of talisman so it is not unlikely to see another clan using a Fujiwara talisman.

z h a n g

Specializes in: Yokai dealings through Dance and Song

The Zhang family is known for their gift of Dance. They are a well-rounded clan who mostly deal with escorting lost Ayakashi back to Ukiyo. At young, they are trained to master various dance and song rites. During important festivals, the Zhang family are usually the ones called to perform. Using their voice and movement, they are able to open pathways to Ukiyo, allowing lost spirits to go home. Depending on the nature of their song and dance, they could even extinguish Shi-gai and free Wasuremonos should they need to.

In order for the Zhang rituals to commence, the onmyouji usually carries an item such as a Suzu or Tamagushi, to aid them in their performance.

y e u n g

Specializes in: Spiritual Blessings

The Yeung clan (pronounced as Yang), also known as the Sun clan, is rumored to be a clan favored by the gods. Members of the Yeung clan usually grow up to be priestess or priests who give humans in Ametsuchi blessings through their patron deities. Most prophecies of blessings or warnings of disaster are given and made by the Yeung clan. They are most commonly known to hold their residence in shrines or temples.

Out of the eleven clans, the Yeung clan is the clan most common of bearing onmyouji with strong spiritual gifts.

h a n

Specializes in: Naming Techniques

The Han clan is one of the strongest and most mysterious clans due to their techniques in using Names. They are one of the only clans who can master Naming Techniques (one of the trickiest and most elusive Onmyodo techniques) and use them in their dealings with the Ayakashi. A name holds much power for both Ayakashi and humans. With the right technique, a name can be taken and once taken, it binds the creature's soul to the master's will. In most cases, names are given instead of stolen as stealing a name is near impossible.

A Han user can use naming techniques to free Wasuremono, allowing them to remember their past selves for a brief moment before they leave for reincarnation. They can also use names to bind and seal Ayakashi back to Ukiyo (so far, this is the moral extent of their abilities) granted that they know the Ayakashi's True Name. Shi-gai can also be exorcised but this is rarely done due to the difficulty and risks taken in the technique.

漆崎

Members of
Urushizaki
u r u s h i z a k i

Specializes in: Shikigami usage

The Urushizaki clan were pioneers in using Shikigami which later opened the paths in creating Contracts. Unlike shiki talisman which the Fujiwara clan uses, Urushizaki shiki are puppet Ayakashi which are made to do the onmyouji's bidding. Owning a Shiki is considered the mark of a great onmyouji in the Urushizaki clan. Strong onmyoujis can own and summon up to three Shikis. Keeping them summoned in Ametsuchi requires a considerable amount of spiritual energy. Because of its nature, it is usually at a disadvantage to Contracts; however, unlike bonded yokai, Shikis are incapable of betraying their masters.

Due to the blooming use of Contracts, the use of Shikigami have been rapidly declining. (No thanks to a certain genbu who keeps eating Shikigami).

s h i g a

Specializes in: Shi-gai exorcism through jutsu

The Shiga clan is one of the few clans who can rival the Tora clan in terms of physical strength. The use of jutsu involves martial arts and the Shiga are masters at the usage of various jutsus; though their main type is usually taijutsu and jujutsu. At a young age, they are brought up to learn multiple hand seal techniques which allow them to exorcise and seal Shi-gai.

One of the first jutsu techniques learned in the Shiga clan is the Nine Hand Seal: [Rin, Pyou, Tou, Sha, Kai, Jin, Retsu, Zai, Zen]

室生

Muuro Akito
m u r o o

Specialization: Shi-gai exorcism through chanting

The Muroo clan, also known as the Eleventh clan, majors in exorcism through use of chants. Because of their techniques, Muroo children are trained to have good memory at a young age as many of their chants are long and repetitious. The Muroo's chants not only give them the power to subdue Shi-gai but also act as a meditation technique to cultivate and boost their spiritual abilities. Some chants are rumored to allow them to communicate with the Ayakashi without the use of a contract.

One odd fact about the Muroo clan is that their clan heads never exceed the ages of thirty-five, making them the youngest clan leaders out of the eleven families.

.The Twelfth Clan.

A hundred years ago, the Twelfth Onmyouji clan had been blotted out from history. Its inhumane acts upon the Ayakashi were never spoken off after the Great War between Ayakashi and Onmyoujis. To this day, no one has ever utter a word on its existence and over time, its name faded out completely.

.Spiritual Wavelengths.

Spiritual Wavelengths is the current standard of measure for one's spiritual powers. The higher the wavelength, the stronger one's power; the lower the wavelength, the weaker the power. A person or yokai can raise their spiritual wavelengths with training.

A steady wavelength (with rhythms similar to calm ocean waves or a steady heartbeat) signify a healthy spirit. Only Shi-gai and corrupted beings are known to have erratic and irregular wavelengths.

When Contracts are made, to prevent the creation of Wasuremono, both parties should have similar wavelengths. If the difference is too great, the higher wavelength overwrites or floods the lower one causing the weaker party's spirit to be erased.

x
.Shi-gai.

Shi-gai; the Tainted Beings which wander between the borders of Ukiyo and Ametsuchi. These malicious spirits have been around since the practice of onmyodo and yet, there is much unknown about these dark creatures.

Shi-gai can take on various forms, usually distinguishable by their darkened coloring and rotting appearance. Their spiritual pressure is heavy and described as 'dirty', reminding one of cold grease. They seem mindless in attitude only caring to destroy and devour any soul it comes in contact with, whether it be Human or Ayakashi.

Fortunately, Shi-gai are kept restricted in the borders of Ametsuchi, keeping most humans out of harm's way. It is a different story for the Onmyouji and people with high enough spiritual powers, allowing them to walk within the borders, with or without their knowledge or consent.

As time goes by, the border seems to thin and gaps are slowly appearing in-between realities. This puts a greater need for Onmyoujis to remain vigilant at all times, should a Shi-gai slip into the Waking Realm. The Takahashi clan, the clan which deals with borders, are keeping a firm hand to ensure that all gaps are sealed off before real damage can be done.

Aside from soul devouring, the Shi-gai also have the ability to 'taint' and corrupt other beings they come into contact with. Contrary to their violent, zombie-like behavior, a Shi-gai spiritual wavelengths is erratic and filled with spontaneous spikes which could disturb any spiritualist or ayakashi's wavelength.

In the worst case scenario, a Shi-gai's spiritual frequency could affect someone to the point of physical sickness, later overwriting their wavelengths, therefore 'tainting' the said being. In the final stages of a taint, an Ayakashi would become a Shi-gai whereas an Onmyouji's body would deteriorate to the point of death.

However, purification techniques and charms can be used to prevent the spread of a taint.

No one truly knows how the Shi-gai came to existence and those who do have long buried the secret, burning up any records or writings which explained the dark truth of how they came to be. If one care enough to search through old scrolls and books on the history of the Onmyouji clans, they may gather the sickening inkling of the Twelfth clan's involvement in the creation of Shi-gai.

A/N: This is a must read to understand Ikigai's World Settings. Any questions regarding can be asked in the OOC thread or the Discord's Q&A section.

.Ametsuchi.

The existence of another dimension is not a subject frequently perused especially in the current generation where spirits are growing more and more absent, particularly in the lives of humanity. The competency of the Onmyouji clans keep Ametsuchi at peace and the world balance.

In Onmyodo lore, Ametsuchi is described like a sea. Humans live peacefully underneath this sea and 'lost' Ayakashi may intentionally or unintentionally find themselves at the 'Surface' of the Ametsuchi. Most are unable to enter and can only watch as bystanders. Some Ayakashi may choose to live on Ametsuchi's surfaces, out of contact with Ukiyo and humans. Others try their best to find their ways back to Ukiyo, having stumbled into Ametsuchi on accident.

Ametsuchi and Ukiyo was once one world and though it is divided now, rifts or portals still exist in rare places. The Onmyouji are tasked to close these rifts.

While most humans are unaware of what lies on the "Surface" of Ametsuchi, Onmyoujis are different. They are people who can walk on the Surface of Amestuchi like the Ayakashi, hence why they are able to see and communicate with the Ayakashi there.

Ametsuchi is merely a term for the Waking Realm. The country in which everyone is on is named Kai. It is a peninsula which closely resembles the geography of Japan. *Kai is not based purely on Japan as it still is a fictional Asian country.

4739d6c0f2a8fd298255f43e90805e55.jpg

.History.

In the country of Kai, long before the world was split between two different planes, Ayakashi and Humans once lived together in times where only havoc and devastation awaited those who survived the next morning. Due to the mercy of the gods, the world was split into two separate dimensions: Ukiyo, the Floating World and Ametsuchi, the Waking Realm. And it was then did Kai finally found peace.

But these two worlds were deeply interlocked with each other and despite the gods best efforts, rifts could be found in the Border between. Ayakashi would slip into Ametsuchi, whether intentionally or unintentionally, wandering lost in the foreign land, sometimes causing trouble to the human dwellers. It was then the gods decided to bless a small number of human beings with the Gift of Sight and the power needed to escort the lost Ayakashi as well as closing the rifts in the Border and thus began the birth of the Onmyoujis.

.Contracts.

Making a Contract is one of the most important decisions in an onmyouji's life. One wrong mistake and it could cost not only the life of the bonded but the lives of many others as well. Such an event is usually observed by the elders of a clan or a trusted invigilator, despite the technique for Bonding being relatively easy. It helps to keep things in track and usually lengthy precautions and tests are taken to prevent the creation of Wasuremonos. Although there are some exceptions made, particularly for Contracts made in dire situations.

The spell for a Contract, contrary to popular belief, is relatively easy. Under mutual agreement of two parties, a Yokai and an Onmyouji are to bind their soul together, thus having their spiritual wavelengths beat like one synchronized heartbeat. This allows both parties to freely enter between both realms.

In the event of a 'Failed' Contract, the results are (as you all know) the turning of Wasuremono from the weaker party. This can happen instantaneously or over time depending on the differences in ones wavelengths. The greater the difference, the quicker the process of turning.

A Contract is made like so:

An Onmyouji and a Yokai are to stand in a circle seal, face to face. They chant the words "I, [Name], bind my soul to you, [Partner's Name] that we may stand as one being under the assembly of the gods. With this seal I acknowledge thou as my Bonded."

Both parties are to draw blood and bleed within the circle. (*Usually the palm of one's hand is sliced with a ceremonial knife). The circle will glow as a sign of the Contract being made and a heavy spiritual pressure would be forced on the two to combine the two souls / spirit wavelengths together. Once the souls are bonded, the circle and the pressure will fade.

There are only two known ways to vanquish a Contract:
1. The death of one of the partners
2. The Release Spell

The Release Spell has a success rate which decreases the longer the Contract goes on. That is to say, the longer the Contract, the more likely the Release Spell will fail. Similar to the Binding / Contract Spell, the two are to stand in a different circle seal and chant the words:

"I, [Name], release my soul from [Partner's name]. With this seal, I sever my ties to you and your world and I stand as one man/woman in the sight of the gods. From this day forth you are no longer my Bonded, you are [Partner's name]."

Blood must be spilled but in a straight line to separate the two. If the Spell succeeds, it will glow and a spiritual pressure will tear the wavelengths back to two. Once this is completed, both partners will be unable to see each other for a given time (even if the Onmyouji has the Gift of Sight). The time can range from a couple days to years.

If the Release Spell fails, the two will experience excruciating pain as their spiritual wavelengths fail to separate fully. In the worst case scenario, the tearing may kill them.

x
.Ukiyou.

Ukiyou: the Floating World also known as the Spirit Realm. Its geography is similar to Ametsuchi though there may be some notable discolorations (e.g. grass may be pink and the sky is purple instead of blue.) Like Ametsuchi, Ukiyou is made up of villages, tribes, the Underworld, Tengoku (Heaven), the Underwater Kingdom like Ryugu-jo, and more.

An Onmyouji may enter into Ukiyou through the rifts, however, the spiritual pressure in Ukiyou is far stronger than the one in Ametsuchi. Staying in there for long places a great strain on a human's body. It is also dangerous for them to be there as humans can either be considered very stinky to non-human eating Ayakashi or delicious to those who do.

A Bonded Onmyouji is able to enter Ukiyou with the help of their partner. They can stay longer than a non-bonded Onmyouji though it is not likely any human would venture to Ukiyou without reason.

.The Border.

The border; the reality between Ametsuchi and Ukiyo. The rules of space and time are unapplicable in this plane and ancient things dwell there such as the Sakura Earth Tree.

The Border was created during the separation of both worlds and its main gateways are protected by Nishimura clan. Rifts exist in the border and specialized Onmyoujis are called to seal them up; albeit rifts are very rare and hard to detect. One of the most common rifts is found in the shadow of a blood moon.

.Gift of Sight.

Some considered the Sight to be a curse more than a blessing for all those who do are forced into the life of an Onmyouji. While Onmyoujis and members of the Eleven Clans are respectable careers, they are merely a community of outcasts. Their range of work is seen as mysterious, and to some, awe-inspiring while others murmur in fear and scorn.

Sight varies from person to person and 98% of the human population is known to be without it. Those who do are either born with it or given the ability due to a Contract with an otherworldly being. Sight can also be trained and developed through spiritual meditation, chants and various Onmyodo techniques.

When things regarding the Ayakashi occur in Ametsuchi, people with the Sight see reality differently than people without it. Although children are known to be better at sensing the Ayakashi than adults.

Contrary to popular belief, not all Onmyoujis are born with the Gift of Sight. Only 20% of the members of the Eleven Clans are blessed with the ability at birth. Most undergone intensive spiritual training to hone and open their Sight while others received their vision through Contracts.

Example of Sight goes as followed:
A Yokai is sitting in the corner of the room, making scratches on the wall. A Bonded Onmyouji or an Onmyouji with the Gift of Sight can both see and hear the scratches being made as well as the Yokai.

Normal humans could see neither the scratches nor the yokai whereas some children or spiritually sensitive humans may be able to sense a strange presence in the corner. Depending on how strong their spiritual wavelength is, they may even be able to see the scratches; though most would not think much of it.
