It was with the anger of somebody who got far too little sleep last night that Adrien found himself slamming his hand down on his alarm clock, hoping fervently to beat the infernal machine into submission. Three clumsy slaps later the neon of the clock dimmed, the device now silent. It was the same wakeup call Adrien had received every day for the last three years but this was anything but just another day. Today was the IHA entrance exam, the first true hurdle on his path to becoming a professional hero. A serious expression wiped the last vestiges of sleep from his face. He would not fail.

Swinging his legs out of the bed he glanced out of the window, early morning sun rays creeping through the glass and into the room. It was another beautiful day in Grafton, the city already alive and buzzing with other early risers on their way to work, probably as thankful as he was for the lovely weather. Moments later Adrien found himself in the bathroom, staring into the mirror above the sink, his own hazel eyes staring back at him. There were faint dark circles under each of them, evidence of the late night he'd had, unable to fall asleep due to a unique combination of fear and excitement. After stifling a yawn he swiftly ran through his morning routine, shower, getting dressed (His usual combination of jeans, t shirt and hoodie today), breakfast and finally a through brushing of his teeth. By the time he was finished it was still pretty early, about 7 am, and the rest of his family were still asleep. He crept by his mother room quietly, not wanting to wake her up sooner than needed but faltered when he reached his elder brothers door, lingering for a moment there. Ben, the real reason he was even on this path. It wasn't that there weren't other aspects of being a professional hero that appealed to him, but Adrien doubted that he would have had the resolve to take on such a difficult occupation without his brother backing him up every step of the way. Well he wouldn't get accepted into IHA just standing around, he had a bus to catch.

It was a short walk through the local park to the nearest bus stop and the short walk served to settle the young man's nerves. He sat on the bus in silence, not attempting to engage in conversation with any other passengers and instead opting to put in a pair of earbuds. He casually selected one of the songs he'd been enjoying recently (The Bravery- Belive) and enjoyed the rest of the bus ride, knowing that he'd arrive at his destination with a comfortable amount of time to spare. It wasn't long before the imposing wall that surrounded IHA came into view, a seemingly never ending expanse of metal that sealed off the prestigious academy from the rest of the world. Occasionally he'd spy a grass coated roof peeking out just above the barrier but for the most part the school was as shrouded as usual. Of course it made sense that they didn't let just anybody into this place, it would be a disaster to see the next generation of heroes wiped out by a particularly ambitious villain who just waltzed in. Not to mention the effect it would have on the reputation of the place.

The bus suddenly came to a halt, brakes squealing a little as they worked hard to cease the spinning of the vehicles wheels. He was here. Adrien tentatively rose from his seat, reaching into his pocket to ensure he still had the ID card he'd been issued after completing the preliminary exams for the academy. Without it there was no chance he would get in, apparently the defences around the main gate would put many military bases to shame. That being said the gates didn't seem imposing as Adrien stepped from the bus, no, instead they seemed more than welcoming. His future was calling! Confidently striding up to the guard posted beside the massive metal door he flashed his ID, giving the burly man plenty of time to ensure it was legit. Surprisingly the man didn't even look at the plastic card, instead he looked at a small panel built into the gate itself. As soon as the ID was exposed to the gate a green light flashed on the panel, signalling for the great doors to slide open. Of course it was all automated, IHA was top of the line after all.

Now IHA was exposed in its entirety to the boy for the first time he was impressed, it was exactly as he'd imagined it. Sleek structures of glass and metal stood within the spacious courtyard Adrien found himself in, at odds with the luscious gardens that lined their roofs. Technology mixing with nature, the antithesis of Grafton city. Kind of at odds with rest of the scene was a lone man standing beside a small sign that read "Welcome applicants!” hands on hips and an almost alarmingly wide smile on his face. Adrien glanced around, suddenly a little annoyed that he was the first person to arrive, nobody else to provide a buffer for him. Taking one earplug from his ear Adrien took a seat on the bench closest to the meeting point and waited for the other applicants to show up.

Nadia yawned, shifting her glasses slightly up her face as she maneuvered her hand to rub her tired green eyes. Her hair was slightly messy and her clothes disheavled, looking as if they had just come out of the wash with fresh wrinkles. This was because of one simple reason. It was her first day at IHA, one of the most prestigious hero academy’s around.

When the girl had first woken up this morning, she realized that the alarm on her clock had not been set. Thankfully she had awoken 30 minutes before hand and got a quick start to things. Brushing her teeth, showering, making breakfast. It had all been sluggish, her tiredness beating out the rational thoughts in her mind quite easily. She was however, absolutely excited to start her career as a hero. The academy was simply the first step.

After eating breakfast and video chatting her parents, she quickly cleaned up and locked the small apartment room. She only had to pay the rent for it one more time before her money would start going to paying for her dorm room arbor IHA....if she passed the exam.

With her sluggishness and uncaring attitude in the early morning, she had ended up looking like a homeless hero more than a pro hero. She groaned as she sat on the ripped up seat of the bus, slipping a book on lesser known quirks out of her bag as she began to read and pass the time. This didn’t last for long.

Soon she approached the large building. Well more like multiple buildings, it was like it’s own little city on its own! Nadia was so entranced by the large beautiful structures over the school walls that she didn’t notice that the bus was about to stop. The harsh movement jutted her forward, slamming her face up against the seat in front of her as she let out a small cry of panic.

A few people looked and snickered as they began to unload off the bus but Nadia ignored them, frowning and nursing her nose as small instinctive tears were brought to the corner of her eyes. “Nice start Nadia.” She said to herself, a very small accent ringing her voice.

Quickly enough, she gathered her things and got off the bus. Pulling her ID out of her pocket, she allowed it to scan on the device like the security guard told her. With that being done, she made her way forward.

“Ah! Here we have another applicant. Come, have a seat!” A man said, pointing towards the area where she spotted another boy with dark hair that seemingly absorbed the morning light. He was giving off this aura of “leave me alone or else”, the same feeling she gave off while studying.

Shrugging, and without a word, she sat nearby the boy. Not close enough to make conversation but not far away enough to be seen as being rude. With that, she played the waiting game and pulled the same book out again.

Hideki Mitsuki
The sweat rolled down his face and falling off of his chin as he stared at the mirror at the gym inside his hotel. Hideki had been up for a few hours already, deciding to head to the small gym that was in his hotel and get a workout in before heading to the IHA entrance exam. The alarm on his phone rang, letting Hideki know that he needed to head back to his room and shower and get ready before heading to the exam. Hideki grabbed a towel and through it around his neck and shoulders as he headed back to his room upstairs. Once he got there he quickly showered and then dried himself off and got dressed. Hideki looked around his hotel room for a moment making sure that all of his things were packed and would be ready to go when he came back for them later, today was the last day he'd be in the hotel.

Hideki went down to the lobby and grabbed an apple and banana from the breakfast area and took them with him as he got on a bus that would take him to the academy. Today would be the first day of his career, he knew that he was going to pass the exam, and he wasn't only going to just pass the exam he was going to be the strongest and best one there. In his mind thats what it meant to be a hero, you had to be the best. Hideki looked around the bus and saw some other kids who looked like they were going to take the exam as well, they all seemed pretty nervous and unsure of themselves. Hideki smirked as he sat back in his seat and looked out the window, he already had them beat and he knew that.

The bus soon came to a stop infant of the school, it was huge. There were plenty of buildings and the wall that surrounded the campus was huge. Hideki let the other kids off the bus first before getting up and walking towards the entrance gate. He handed his ID to the guard and he ran it though the system. It all checked out and Hideki made his way through the front gate, the campus was as impressive as people said it was, but he wasn't focused on that. He was just ready to get this exam over with and start his time at this school, he knew he was going to pass the exam he wasn't worried.

Once he entered the grounds of the campus he followed the kids in front of him as they made their way to where they were supposed to go. In front of him was a man who was smiling and holding a sign that told them this was where they were supposed to go. The man was welcoming everybody as the area was starting to fill up, Hideki calmly and cooly walked over and grabbed a seat as he waited for the exam to start.

mari freesia.
To worry meant to suffer twice. Not that she had the capacity to fret. Growing up while waking up to nightmares about what she’d be accused of stealing next did wonders for her mental tenacity. As such, Mari embodied the very definition of “nonchalant” as she deftly folded a ham and onion omelette in a skillet. Whether it be her morning routine or breakfast, everything would proceed as per usual.

It wasn’t that she was overconfident, per se. Rather, it was simply the fact that, in spite of this day being a potentially life-altering moment, she couldn’t bring herself to envision a breakdown upon failure. Sure, getting accepted would make her one step closer towards her dream, but getting rejected also wasn't the end of the world. If anything, it simply meant that her abilities as an aspiring hero were lacking. Even if she had become stronger since back then, that didn't mean it was enough to become a true pro-hero. And entering the league of heroes as an incompetent hero was unacceptable on a personal level.

Nevertheless, this was still the first step, and she'd make sure to take it seriously. Setting her lunch aside in her storage, Mari made quick work of her breakfast and was out the door of her temporary apartment in no time.

“Excuse me,” the blonde called out softly as she sat next to a boy around her age on the bus. Today, the seats were all packed, and perhaps some of them were fellow students on the way to take the same exam that she was to undergo. Correct to her assumptions, the brunette, who introduced himself as Mark, was indeed an examinee, would-be-student, and a potential rival. Finding their destination to be in common, the two chatted lightly along the way—neither too hot nor too cold. While both chose to be courteous, they were, after all, still competitors in the end. One of their successes could easily lead to the other's failure.

“It would be nice if we both passed. Maybe we'll even be put in the same class.” the boy said earnestly, to which Mari nodded in response. Though they had the tacit understanding that they could not yet be friends, his attitude was still very honest, and his bearing appeared upright. If it was someone like this, she was sure that he would become a splendid hero should his abilities match his mentality, and a person like Mark was certainly a boy that she wouldn't mind befriending or at least acquainting herself with.

Soon, the two departed from the bus and said their goodbyes and well wishes, and it was time for Mari Freesia to challenge the intimidating gates of IHA. Prompted by the stoney gaze from the security guard, the blonde produced her ID card from her storage and swiftly tapped herself in. As much as she felt no fear of the guard, she still felt his gaze to be discomforting and didn't wish to stick around.

Once inside, Mari found herself within a decently sized group that was on the verge of becoming a crowd in a few minutes. While waiting for the exam to commence, her deep, electric blue eyes scanned the room for any familiar, interesting, or prominent faces. The first to catch her eye was a girl who dared to read amongst all the tension, and the second was, of course, Mark who gave a friendly wave once their eyes met. At this, her face pulled into a wry smile, and she waved back before mouthing “good luck” one last time. Finally, she looked forward with the slightest bit of excitement bubbling up within her.

Today was the day she'd finally be given the chance to fulfill what she had promised herself all those years ago.

It wasn’t long before other hopeful applicants began to join Adrien in the IHA courtyard, at first they trickled in giving him time to examine each individual but soon that trickle became a raging river and anywhere between 60-70 people were gathered around the meeting point, all anxiously awaiting the upcoming challenge. The first of them had been another poor soul condemned to the “early” bench, a girl with vibrant orange hair who had simply sat down and began reading a book. He appreciated that, small talk was not a skill he was known for. Adrien scanned the sea of faces, noting the wide range of emotions on display. Some certainly seemed more confident than others. Emotions weren’t the only things on display however, there were plenty of interesting mutations that were worth noting, some guy with bladed legs, a girl with what appeared to be shark traits, another who was sporting a huge scorpion tail. And they were only the ones he could see from his seat on the bench. It was certainly going to be an interesting challenge to say the least. A booming voice suddenly caught Adrien’ attention, loud and clear even other the quiet murmur of the crowd. The very nature of the voice made it easy to locate its owner, the man standing beside the welcome sign. Adrien’ guessed he must be a teacher here, but if he was being honest this guy wasn’t exactly what he’d been expecting. A pastel pink v neck sweater and a huge bushy beard didn’t scream “hero”. But in this quirk fuelled world he knew better than to judge somebodies capabilities on appearance alone. And so it was with rapt attention that Adrien listened to what the man had to say.

“Hello hopeful participants! Looks like we have a large turnout this year so I’d like to start by congratulating you all on making it past the preliminary exams, that’s no easy feat. But this is where we divide the best from the good. Very few of you will have what it takes to get into our prestigious academy this year. Anyway enough stalling, let’s get to the entrance exam shall we?”

Without warning the ground behind the man suddenly began to open up, revealing a massive stairway leading deep into the earth whilst at the same time a large screen rose up from the floor beside him, standing tall enough that every person in the courtyard could see it quite clearly. On its display were a few icons and a short list of rules.

“Alright let’s quickly run down exactly what you’re going to be doing here today. Behind me is the entrance to our sub terrain maze, which you will be attempting to complete. The first 16 of you to reach the finish will be enrolled in our hero course!” The man continued, completely unfazed by the concrete maw that had just opened up in the earth a meter behind him. His eyes did however suddenly take on a mischievous twinkle as he spoke. “Of course anybody who is familiar with the way we do things around here should know that this is no straightforward maze. The entire thing is filled with faux villains, traps, treacherous terrains, etc. We will also be judging you on your tactics, technique, attitude and quirk potential. So have a little fun with it, show off if you get the chance okay? Great. With that I think we’re pretty much ready to go. I’ll give you 5 minutes to prepare and then we shall start. Best of luck to you all.”

And with that he turned on his heel and descended the staircase, swiftly disappearing from sight. Where the crowd had been silent during the teacher’s explanation a nervous muttering quickly began now that he was gone. Blocking out the words of those around him Adrien stood, trying his hardest to ignore the butterflies in the pit of his stomach. A maze. A maze packed to the brim with obstacles that could quite easily end his dream of becoming a hero. Sure his quirk was well suited to traversing obstacles but that ironically would only be half the challenge here. He had no superhuman ability to navigate so he’d practically be relying on luck to find his way. The very thought caused him to clench his teeth, he liked being in control of a situation, being able to rely on his own abilities to crack a challenge, not relying on luck.

Realising he was working himself up Adrien took a breath, closing his eyes for a moment so he could centre himself. When he opened them again it would be basically impossible for an onlooker to be able to detect even a hint of nervousness in the young man, his face may as well have been made of stone for all the emotion it betrayed. His gaze found the display of the screen that had risen from the ground and the list of rules upon it.

1. No harming or sabotaging other applicants.
2. Please keep damage to infrastructure to a minimum.
3. Teaming up is allowed but remember that you will be placed individually.
4. Have fun!

It was a short list, this was certainly a no holds barred kind of affair. Thankfully the rules were simple at least, he wouldn’t have broken any of them intentionally anyway. Well perhaps the last one, this was too important to consider having fun but funnily enough he doubted they would be enforcing that particular rule. But then Adrien’s mind flashed back to the teacher’s unnervingly wide smile and even that didn’t seem quite impossible. One thing was for sure, if he did manage to pass he hoped he didn’t get that guy as his homeroom teacher. He didn’t think he could look at that smile for 3 years.

The rules on the screen faded out to be replaced by a minute long countdown, signalling that the exam was almost upon them. 60 seconds. Not a lot of time to come up with a plan really but that’s he had so he’d have to make do. Adrien almost smiled when he realised that even this part of the exam mimicked what it was like to be a pro hero, you wouldn’t always have time to make a plan, part of a being a hero was acting on instinct and dealing with the consequences. Clever. His brown eyes scanned the crowd once more as he brainstormed, looking for something, anything that he might be able to use to his advantage. A guy with flaming hair, a trio of identical girls in tutus (He had to take a second glance at that one to make sure that hadn’t simply been his imagination) and then there, a few feet away from him, a lifeline. Somebody who was blissfully unaware that they had just become a part of his plan to defeat this notorious entrance exam. With the countdown now in single digits Adrien turned his steely gaze to the ominously dark stairway just in time to see it light up with the glow of hundreds of wall mounted torches. Thanks to how early he had been he was right near the front of the pack, meaning that although he would have a slight head start he’d have to move fast to avoid being trampled.
3
An eerie silence fell over the group, all eyes on the countdown now. This was it.
2
A familiar cold sensation began to spread across Adrien’ skin as he activated his quirk, spectral green energy surrounding his body before taking the shape of four powerful tendrils that sprouted from his back. Behind him he heard other quirks being readied, the sounds providing plenty of fuel for his imagination.
1
And they were off! The group surged forwards into the tunnel, a bullet fired from a gun. Echoes of hundreds of feet filled the air, the hectic scene only illuminated by flickering torchlight. Those with mobility enhancing quirks began to pull ahead whilst the main bulk of the applicants were stuck just trying to keep pace amongst the crowd, Adrien included. In what seemed like mere seconds he reached a massive circular cavern that all but stopped him in his tracks. It was like nothing he’d ever seen, within the cavern sat a city that was clearly custom built for this exercise. As the crowd drew closer it became clear that it wasn’t laid out like any ordinary urban area, instead the buildings and alleyways had deliberately been set out like a maze. Obviously a maze challenge wouldn’t be particularly difficult if they could all just follow sign posts to the end.

Shaking his head Adrien shook off the awe that was threatening to stop him in his tracks, instead narrowing his gaze so that he wouldn’t lose sight of the boy he was following. As he trailed him into a sprawling mess of back allies it was tempting to use his quirk to simply phase through some of these walls but he couldn’t do that without risking the loss of his quarry. But the furry eared boy ahead of him was fast, just enough so that for a fleeting moment Adrien lost sight of him as he rounded a corner. Gritting his teeth the hero-wannabe put on a burst of speed to catch up, only to run straight into the other boy’s back.
Slightly winded by the whole ordeal it took the Adrien to realise why he’d been stopped but then it became oh so painfully clear. In the open street ahead was a mechanical beast easily 10 feet tall, in the image of a hulking steel bull. Its eye glowed a dim red and the horns on its head looked more than sharp enough to turn either of them into a human kebab. As it didn’t seem like they had been spotted yet Adrien took the opportunity to slink into the shadows of the alley, beckoning for the other boy to join him.

“So I don’t know about you mate but I don’t really want to take that thing on in a fight. Luckily for you I have an alternative plan. You in?” Adrien whispered once the other guy had joined him.

Well it’s not like I’ve got any better ideas so sure, why not. I’m Carter by the way.” Carter replied, the dog ears on his head twitching as the bull continued to stomp around.

“Adrien. So, here’s the plan.”

The ghostly young man went on to outline his plan, explaining what he had to about his quirk in order for Carter to get the idea. When he was done Carter looked slightly confused but he nodded anyway before giving Adrien a thumbs up of approval. Great, dog boy was in. Not surprising really when all the risk was on Adrien’s shoulders rather than his own. Perhaps he thought that this was an act of selfless courage but that was far from the truth. Carter was simply far more valuable than Adrien was letting on.
Peering out from behind a couple of mock dumpsters (That smelt extraordinarily convincing) it wasn’t difficult to see that the bull was still there, now blocking the exit with its ample rear. Perfect. Taking a deep breath of air to both calm the beating of his heart and to ensure he had as much oxygen in his body as possible Adrien waited for his chance before bursting out from cover, making a beeline for the bull itself. Well he thought to himself as he slid under the belly of the beast here goes nothing.

Her attention was focused on the odd hero, apparently in charge of telling the crowd and herself about the exercise they were to complete in order to gain entrance in IHA. Nearly 2 or 3 full classrooms of students, some with melting hands and others that looked almost as if they were quirkless. Most were around her age by the looks of things though she wasn't too sure. Perhaps there was a quirk that altered the look of themselves. She had read about similar cases in her book that was now safely tucked away in her bag. Despite all this, it seemed only 16 of them would be welcomed into the academy, meaning more than half would be going home with nothing gained besides a pat on the back for trying.

Nadia didn't believe she would fail this little test. The moment her 5 minutes had began her brain started coming up with different solutions. There was one way she would conquer the maze portion of the test. It was simple really. The red head just needed to put herself in the mindset of the person who created the maze in the first place. Luck had nothing to do with it. If you were to go right, then it'd be odd for you to go right again unless you were in the middle of the maze. Each turn led you into a different direction and her plan was to not loop back. Her duty as a future hero would be to keep pushing forward, therefore she wouldn't allow herself to get sidetracked. These "faux villains" were listed under the same category as traps and terrain. They were obstacles she was required to get by, but something she shouldn't focus on. After all, with a test, if you don't know the answer to a question you skip over it and come back to it.

Her emerald eyes glanced up to the screen. 2 minutes left before she was to head out. Her plan was made, and hopefully it worked out just as she wished. With so little amount of people passing, teaming up was a no go. Something she could regret and Nadia admitted to herself that it was the one thing that could ruin her plan. She was banking on the idea that most wouldn't team up and therefore, she wouldn't either. Nodding to herself, she allowed her hand to drift into her bag.

Pulling out a small bottle of clear liquid, she spun it around a little, thoroughly mixing it up before opening it up and dumping the contents out onto the bottom of her boots. A very simple chemical fluid that allowed near to no friction to interrupt her movement called Syndricate Lubricant, essentially making her boots roller skates in the terms of running. With this, her speed factor should settle in and at least match those students who had speed/movement quirks.

3

Nadia stood, slipping her bag back on and kicking the tip of her boots on the ground, making sure they were fastened on.

2

Many people squatted down, attempting to get a spring up start. She even noticed a few quirks prematurely shooting out of their bodies.

1

"Here we go. Let's do this Nadia." She told herself, a small smile rearing on her face. Oops...looks like she was excited.

The second the clock showed zero, a large buzzing made itself know from the monitor. The area erupted into immediate chaos as people rushed into the entrance of the maze, some getting in quirk while others pushed their way in past the others. A small amount of people went in with another, sometimes 3. This worried her slightly, assuming that teams were being made but she brushed it under her thought process. Time to focus.

Breaking into a sprint, the girl slid like an ice skater against the concrete ground. Some people stared in disbelief as Nadia zoomed right past them and turned her first corner to the right. The mock city she was in looked authentic down to the garbage and newspapers scattered in the ally ways. Only it was as they said, a huge maze of streets and ally's that made it almost impossible to navigate quickly.

"This is going to be a bit more trouble than i anticipated." She said to herself with a sigh, taking a left up at the next corner. "Perhaps i can...!"
Nadia was interrupted as she felt a tug on her legs and a harsh WOOOOSH sound. A large rope shot out like a snake, straight from the street light hanging overhead of her. It wrapped around her legs so fast that she had no time to react, and soon after she shot up into the air feet first. In just 5 seconds since she felt the tug, she was now completely tied up from the waist down. One of her obstacles. A simple trap that she would be able to get out of easily. Well...she would have if her bag hadn't fallen off of her back when she shot up.

'Uh oh' The red head thought embarrassed that all of her compounds and chemicals were left on the ground. The blush on her face matched well with her hair as she frustratingly yelled out.

"ПОЧЕМУ Я!?" (WHY ME!?)

Hideki Mitsuki
Soon enough more and more people started to show up, the area they were in was pretty full now and it didn't appear that anymore would be coming. after everyone had arrived it appeared that there were more than one hundred possible students that had shown up to take the entrance exam. Hideki smirked as he looked around, he liked his odds.

Soon the man that was standing by the sign spoke up, he was a strange looking man that Hideki didn't really think much about, but now he was standing there giving them an introduction and explaining to them the test they would be taking. So with over one hundred kids here, only sixteen of them would make it into the school, those odds weren't very good, at least not very good for everyone else, basically everyone else was fighting over fifteen spots, Hideki knew that he already had one spot locked up. Hideki continued to look around at the other participants as the strange looking man who must be a teacher Hideki thought, continued to explain what would be happening in the exam. As he was speaking the ground would shake and a huge television screen would come out of the ground. This screen would display the four rules that they would have for this exam. A flight of stairs that headed down into the earth would appear as well. That is where they would be taking the exam.

After the teacher explained everything he excused himself and told the kids they had five minutes to prepare. The other participants started to prepare for what would be ahead, some of them were already forming teams together. Hideki had no interest in doing that, other people would just get in his way. He did though quickly think over on what he wanted to do, he had every intention of finishing first in this obstacle course, and no one here would stop him from doing that.

The time got down to the last minute, Hideki would stretch out as he prepared himself to get the exam started. He fished around in his pocket to make sure that his lighter was in there, he felt the lighter and took it out real quick, lighting it to make sure it worked. He didn't think he'd need it for the exam but always better to have one just in case,

3
Hideki stood, ready to get this going already.

2
Some of the examiners were already getting their quirks started up.

1
And just like that a sound of a gun going off gave the kids their chance to get the test started.

Hideki activated his quirk right from start, he shot fire out of both of his hands and used them like a jet propulsion to fly above the other examiners and land at the front of the pack before they made it to the staircase. Hideki would quickly make it down the staircase trying to give himself a lead, but some of the kids who had mobility quirks were catching up. Hideki made his way quickly towards what looked like a cavern, but this was like nothing he had ever seen before. This cavern had a giant city in it. It was set up a little differently than a normal city, obviously because it was maze so they had set up the streets and alleyways a little bit differently than a normal city. If you didn't pay attention you could easily get lost in here, Hideki paid close attention to the signs as he went from street to street and alley to alley trying to make his way to the exit. As he was crossing a street, something seemed off. This street was destroyed. The rest of the streets had been pretty cleaned and had no damage, this one though had debris and damage everywhere. Hideki would stop and check around, thats when he was attacked by a pair or robots. Both of them were about seven feet tall and seemed like that could move pretty quick. The two robots tried to come at him from behind him and infant of him. Hideki would use his flames and would use them to propel himself high in the air. He would look down at both of them and smirk "
Well looks like you two want to be destroyed huh?"

mari freesia.
Only sixteen, Mari thought with a start. Somehow, the number was far lower than what she had expected granted the sizeable crowd that had gathered for the exam on this day. She had figured IHA would be selective as a result of its prestige, but the weight of the words “this is where we divide the best from the good” suddenly pressed down with a much more oppressive force than before. However, she would not falter. If she couldn't manage to distinguish herself now, then she wouldn't be able to until the far future. Then again, she did not have much time to dwell on such thoughts.

A large screen appeared before the crowd, followed by the booming voice of their proctor. It was a visual aid of sorts for the hero to use to explain the tasks laid out for them on this exam. More importantly, it appeared that it was also a ruleboard and a countdown. But before that, the blonde couldn't help but breathe out a sigh of relief. With his final parting words of well-wishing said, the energetically loud man had left for who knows where. Well, the important part was that he had departed from the scene. Somehow the mischief printed clearly in the hero’s eyes was enough to make even Mari, herself, have misgivings about the exam.

Exhaling the breath she had unconsciously held, Mari stiffly tucked a stray lock behind her left ear. “Focus,” she chided. There were only five—now four—minutes to come up with some semblance of an emergency plan. Gazing around the room, however, the blonde was at a loss as to how she would be able to take advantage of the third rule, “teaming up is allowed.” Unfortunately, she didn’t have the luxury of going around to ask what quirk each person possessed, or if—on the rare chance—they even had one at all. That is, mutant types were more or less self-explanatory, but most quirks weren’t quite so obvious and couldn’t be taken at face value, much like her own.

Putting the idea of teaming up to the side for the time being, Mari instead kept her eyes peeled for any useful items that might be lying around. If the situation called for it, she’d worry about teaming up with others then. Makeshift strategies were her specialty anyway.

10...9...8… Gradually, the number reflected in her deep, electric blue eyes dwindled down to single digits. In her head, she joined in on the countdown. Yet even at the count of 3, she moved not even an inch. Without reacting to the sound of the various quirks activating around her simultaneously, Mari gazed into the dark abyss that was awaiting them.

And with a bang, the students rushed into the labyrinth in surges and waves.

Mari herself raced down the twisting passages at her own pace, but before she knew it, the air pressure sharply shifted.

While deftly flipping over an incoming mech's claw, Mari couldn't help but marvel for a few seconds at the intricacy of these exam bots’ designs. She hadn't so much as heard a single footstep prior to the sudden ambush, yet this giant beetle-shaped monster bot certainly packed quite a punch.

Fortunately, it was not quite fast enough. Not for someone who relied heavily on her reflexes and ability to move freely. Using its extended arm as a launch pad, Mari propelled herself to soar just above the beetle, all while using her quirk to warp and strip her left hand of her glove. Once in position, she summoned forth her trademark fridge and sent the gravity and quirk-enforced weight crashing right into the ten foot beetle bot's head. The result, however, was disappointing, though somewhat expected and amusing.

“That's quite a hard shell you’ve’ got,” Mari muttered, as the mech appeared unscathed save for the now deformed back of its head. Nevertheless, her lithe body and nimble footwork successfully allowed her to vault over and roll away from the robot and falling fridge, and she carefully observed its reactions. Instead of twisting its arm to catch her as she had expected, the beetle instead completely turned to face her. And then it charged, horned-prong and all. Timing her escape once again, the blonde's sharp gaze never left the bot's form for even a second. Right as she leapt to the side, the monster flew straight down into the next corridor over, taking a few strands of her hair with it.

Though it was somewhat frightening that it charged with enough force to cause a gust to sweep through its path, Mari took advantage of its unbalanced state to retrieve her fridge and retreat. A strategic retreat, of course. With her current arsenal and environment, the chances of her taking down the bot in a reasonable amount of time was less than 15%. Defeating these traps weren’t the end goal, regardless.

Using her quirk to slip her glove back on in an instant, the girl backed away into a narrow passage on the right. Though she found herself defeated in a sense, she still managed to scrape together enough information to prepare herself with the next run-in with such a monster. Based on its obvious actions, it shell was incredibly dense but lacked speed and flexibility as a result. It also appeared that its limbs were fortified as well, though the advantage was that it did not possess flexible joints that allowed it to twist its clawed appendages a considerable amount. As such, as long as you could slip behind it, this particular bot was not much of a threat.

Before she could review the optimal materials for that operation around her, however, a "ПОЧЕМУ Я!?" rang throughout the area.

Mari’s expression twisted into one of confusion. Was it another one of the obstacles set up by the examiners? But she didn’t recognize the language, though perhaps the echo had simply twisted the words into something incomprehensible.

Regardless, as someone who swore to never refuse a person who was potentially in distress, the blonde rushed towards the direction of the voice. A short while later, she came across a...red-haired girl suspended in the air by a thick rope tied to a streetlight of all things. Specifically, it was that same girl whom she had spotted reading a book while waiting for the exam to commence.

If the the bag and various tubes and containers strewn about the floor hadn’t confused her, the scene might have been funny. However, Mari could only shake herself out of her stupor before clearing her throat to hesitantly state, “Um, I’ll cut the rope in a second. Prepare yourself for the fall.”

With a flick of her wrist, Mari shot two sharp knives out of her storage in succession and with sharp accuracy. The first cut away but merely loosened the upper end of the rope bound to the streetlight. Then, the second severed the rope completely. As for why she chose the trickier path of cutting the rope from the top…

Without waiting for the girl to land, the blonde gestured at the now loosened rope. “Sorry about the rough treatment, and I know this is sudden, but do you mind if I have that?”

Being perfectly honest, she would have preferred wire, but a rope like this could come in handy somewhere. Perhaps even for dealing with the armored beetle.

Sliding beneath the colossal machine was similar to what Adrien imagined laying beneath a train might feel like. The roof of the cavern above was completely blocked out by the heaving golden chest overhead. The sound of gears turning was actually audible from this distance. But with no time to be impressed by the terrifying feat of engineering Adrien’s tendrils reached up from beneath the Bull’s head and latched on to the set of horns mounted there, using his grip to slingshot himself forward a couple of extra meters. His landing was far from graceful, a very haphazard barrel roll at best, a crash landing at worst. But still he was back on his feet and putting his all into mad dash towards the other side of the street. A wave of fear washed over Adrien as the bull let out a snort of rage behind him, a war cry followed by the heavy thudding of metal hooves. The machine was undoubtedly faster than he was so this race would come down to if the element of surprise was enough to make it to safety or not. Gritting his teeth Adrien had to force himself not to turn around to check on Carter’s progress, doing so would only slow him down. The glass store fronts of this side of the street were drawing close now, enough so that he could make out his reflection in them and more importantly the incredibly pissed off looking bull right on his heels.

“Shit”

The word slipped from between Adrien’s lip as it dawned on him that he wouldn’t make it to the narrow alley on the other side. For a fleeting second panic threatened to flare up in the pit of his stomach but he forced it down, focusing on his options. Plan B it was. Turning on his heel the aspiring hero in training dug in his feet and stared down the barrel of the gun as it were. His brown eyes stared into the glowing red eyes of his foe as he calmly raised his hand and gave it the finger. Of course the robot couldn’t understand the implications of such a taunt but none the less it lowered its horns for the final rush, a gush of steam escaping a vent in its nose. Barely a second before Adrien was to become a human pancake he activated his quirk, smirking as several tonnes of speeding metal passed through him as if he were air. A loud crashing sound told him that the bull had been unable to stop its attack before reaching the shopfront. Turning to admire his handiwork he found that the bull had managed completely flatten its head against the wall it had run straight into and was now lurching around in a drunken fashion, clearly quite confused. Hopefully he wouldn’t lose any marks for collateral damage because the building itself hadn’t fared much better, now boasting a suspiciously bovine looking hole.

“Adrien!”

Pretty certain that their mechanical foe had been rendered pretty much harmless Adrien turned towards the sound of Carter’s voice, a somewhat smug look on his face. This look was quite forcefully removed from his face by a mechanical fist, smacking him hard enough that he staggered back a few steps.

“Oh come on.” He growled, rubbing the red area of his face where the punch had made contact.

Before him stood a small group of yet more robots, this time modelled in a more humanoid form. They barely stood a few inches taller than Adrien himself but they outnumbered him 4 to one and honestly he wasn’t in the mood for another fight already. Regardless he couldn’t falter already so his fingers curled into fists and his spectral tendrils reared up behind him like four angry cobras. Before he could attack however the two bots at the back of the group suddenly had their heads torn off and tossed aside, leaving only sparking stumps in their place. Their bodies collapsed to the ground to reveal Carter behind them, looking far more canine than how Adrien had left him. His eyes glinted a strange yellow colour, thick grey fur had sprouted from his arms and even a bushy tail now waved about behind him. So dog boy was more of a werewolf hey? Good to know. Determined not to be left a complete damsel in distress Adrien side stepped a punch thrown by the bot closest to him, wrapping a tentacle around its head and lifting it off the ground before using it as an improvised projectile weapon against its robotic brethren, leaving the pair out for the count.

“Cheers. You uh…do something with your hair?” Adrien dryly asked Carter, rubbing the still sore spot on his cheek.

Very funny Davy jones.” The canine boy sighed as he returned to his normal form, the excess dog features fading away slowly. Once the last of them had gone he gestured around, asking “So, what’s our next move?”

“Same as before. We use that nose of yours to track the staff member from the start. I figured that was what you’d been doing up to his point anyway, considering how quickly you made it this far. As long as you can stick on his trail we shouldn’t stray too far off the beaten track. We’ll have to handle obstacles as they come though.” He replied, shaking off the Davy Jones comment. Not bad but he’d heard that one before.

You were using me as a bloodhound? I don’t know how I feel about that… but you went out on a limb for me here so I guess were even. But I’m not slowing down for your sake so try to keep up!” Carter called out behind him, already running towards the next set of alleyways.

A curt nod was all Adrien gave in response, saving his breath for the journey ahead. Cracking his knuckles he began jogging after his temporary ally, glad that the other boy had chosen to stick with him. Certainly easier than chasing a hound.

Nadia groaned as she felt blood rush from her body and down to her head, instantly making her head dizzy and her eyesight shaky. It was the same feeling she would get when standing up too fast. The feeling of the head rush allowed another student to sneak by her line of vision before the girl made herself known. “Um, I’ll cut the rope in a second. Prepare yourself for the fall.” The blonde girl spoke with slight uncertainty, seemingly confused about the situation.

The red haired girl could only nod and wait to be cut down, preparing herself for a landing when told to do so. Not the start she wanted to this test but at least the setback wasn't long. She would have to focus on speed and avoiding every bot she could from here. Currently she was probably 1/4 through the maze after her initial rush but considering the maze was the size of a small city, she wasn't exactly sure *where* they were. This newcomer however...maybe a team up was in order? It was certainly a possibility now that they were here together and considering she wouldn't want to get caught in another rope trap.

Suddenly she felt the bindings around her legs loosen along with a quick "thwip". A knife perhaps? She couldn't see from her position and in all honesty it didn't matter. Another quick "thwip" and the rope holding her 10 or so feet off the ground gave away and she found herself plummeting towards the concrete. A tactful flip and she was on her feet, almost like a cat who refused to land on anything but their paws. Quickly she scooped up her bag and checked the contents as the other girl began speaking again, her striking blue eyes meeting her own green ones with curiosity and a hint of hope as she asked for the rope that was preventing her from moving on just a few seconds ago.

“Sorry about the rough treatment, and I know this is sudden, but do you mind if I have that?”

She gave her a small smile. At least she was somewhat polite and not asking unnecessary questions about her well being. They were in a test after all and there simply wasn't time for such things. She shook her head slightly, her fiery locks dancing around her shoulders as if they were on fire. "No worries. You wish to take this rope? I see no issue with that but i must ask. Would you be opposed to me tagging along?" She questioned the sandy blonde. Nadia proceeded to pick up the rope and hold out her hand, offering it to the girl. Technically the Russian girl wasn't worried about refusal. Nothing could stop her from tagging along anyway's and if a potential hero ignored the pleads of help from another then that wouldn't look good towards the higher ups.

It might have been unnecessary but she had the other girl snared in a trap; albeit a trap that benefited them both. She waited for the girl to respond but her foot did begin to tap in worry of the time. It was ticking down after all.

Hideki Mitsuki
Hideki quickly turned his body while in the air and would be facing the two machines, as he started to fly towards the two of them, Hideki grabbed the lighter he had and took it out of his pocket, while in the air he lit the lighter and then used the flame to make his own flames stronger. He smirked as he shot blue flames out of both of his hands, dropping the lighter in the process. Hideki shot hot blue flames out of both of his hands down at the robots, the flames stroking both of the robots on the top of their heads and instantly melting and destroying their heads. Hideki then went into a roll as he landed on the ground. He picked himself up and dusted himself off as he turned and looked at both robots destroyed on the ground. He picked up his lighter that had fallen onto the ground.

He looked around as he heard the sounds of fighting from all over the exam site, it looked like he wasn't the only one that was dealing with obstacles, though if they were all as eases these two robots were, then it wouldn't be much of a challenge for Hideki. He then decided to head down the road to try and find his way out of the maze. He followed the signs along the roads and alleyways, he ran into a few other obstacles and was able to pretty quickly get through them, a robotic wolf caused him a little bit of trouble because of its speed, but besides that it was going as he thought it would. He saw even destroyed some robots that other possible students were fighting, that would look good on his resume.

After a few minutes it seemed like Hideki was getting closer and closer to the end, but it still seemed like it was a little ways away, as he was running Hideki heard something from behind him, thinking it was another robot, he turned around and started to gather flames in his right hand as he waited for the sound to reach him from around the corner, right before he shot off his flames he saw two boys appear from around the corner, one was a boy that had features of a dog and the other one seemed to be following him, Hideki waited to see what they would do.

Foster Foster

mari freesia.
Cerulean eyes carefully tracked the girl’s movements, fiery red hair and all. Though she had mentioned that the girl should “prepare herself,” Mari hadn’t actually thought much about the aftermath of cutting the rope. To her pleasant surprise, the girl had deftly flipped midair to land perfectly on her feet, like a lithe cat. It was plain to see from that one movement that the girl was quite physically capable. Of course, she shouldn’t have expected no less from a fellow examinee.

Thus, when the girl asked to “tag along,” she had no qualms. Not that she was given much option to refuse. When her piqued gaze met the redhead’s smile, a wry smile of her own inched its way on to her expression. There weren’t many who would miss the implication behind her words. In a sense, it was an ordinary request for cooperation. At the same time, it was a threat of sorts: refusal would only serve to mark down Mari’s own evaluation by the examiners. However, she wasn’t against shrewd people. As long as they used that quick-wittedness for good, anyway.

With a curt nod, Mari accepted the rope as well as the redhead’s proposition. “Of course. I was going to ask the same.” And as soon as she finished her words, the blonde removed both of her gloves. Then, wrapping her fingers around the rope and her gloves, she made the items vanish almost in the blink of an eye. First, the rope disappeared. Then, the gloves promptly followed.

“Mari Freesia. As you can see, my quirk allows me to stash items at will. It’s nothing special, but it has it’s uses.” Ignoring formalities due to the shortage of time, Mari got straight to the point upon displaying her quirk. Her sharp eyes then wandered towards the bag filled with vials, silently inquiring about the redhead’s own identity.

Finally, she looked back in the direction that she had arrived onto the scene from. Recalling her brief encounter with the mechanical beetle, Mari soundly confirmed that the next direction to move in was its opposite. Regardless, she still turned to the redhead for her own opinions, for there was no knowing what kind of information others held.

“Where I came from, there’s a beetle-shaped robot charging about the streets. It seemed to be on the smaller side compared to other obstacles, but its armor is fairly thick, and it has quite a bit of strength. I planned on continuing in the opposite direction, but do you have any leads?”
