Sand Dunes and Nightmares

Time of Day: 12:00pm
Date: Wednesday of Week 2

Professor Hakoda Fuller looked out over the group of students that had gathered to head to Dunsmuir California to take on the mission he’d initiated. He knew that something wasn’t right with the small town even though he hadn’t walked through it; it was something he could feel from a distance and that scared him. Normally, the instructor would’ve insisted on investigating something like this himself, but Lord Death wanted to keep all his staff on hand and ready for emergencies. Even though Hakoda thought that Dunsmuir could very well be an emergency, Lord Death had insisted that the situation be investigated first. That was what had initiated this little gathering.

“Now, I know you all have the briefing information, but there’s one thing I need to make perfectly clear,” he addressed all seven of them. “This mission is purely investigative in nature. You are looking, sensing, feeling. And then you are reporting back to me or Lord Death himself. Any further action will be determined by us before you move forward further.”

Given that he was a newer professor at the DWMA, not many students had been exposed to his brand of seriousness yet. Now they were getting a simple taste. He was concerned about the mission and that was clear from his tone. Some might even venture so far as to say that he sounded scared for them as well.

“Because we know so little about the situation, we’re unsure of what you’re up against. Students getting in over their heads is not something we want to deal with right now. Work as a team, stay together, and watch each other’s backs. Do not hesitate to contact us back here in Death City if you need anything at all.” Once again, his tone was drilling. No one would doubt that in another life, Hakoda would’ve made a great sergeant. That was his nickname after all.

Before he could go into more details, a bus pulled up and he considered them all. “Unfortunately, that’s really all the time we seem to have. Are there any quick questions I might be able to address?” His eyes scanned over all of them, ready to answer should anything come up. If they had no questions, though, it was clear from his gesture that they were welcome to get on the bus at that moment.

“Hey there!” the bus driver called out. “Here to escort a group o’ students to Dunsmuir. Is that right?”

The instructor merely nodded in confirmation and then stepped out of the way of the main door so that the students could get on board.

Note: It is assumed that all seven students were present for this "briefing." You are more than welcome to write what brought your character to the bus station, but please do not say that you were late and missed this occurrence. I'm trying to expedite things a bit to get to exciting things faster. It is also assumed that all students have at least seen the briefing information that was included on the mission recruitment page although not everyone has to have read it or have a copy with them. Everyone has simply had an opportunity to read it.

Neil Cyclamen

Neil checked his watch in interest. Huh. 12:00 P.M. Usually, he'd have nothing to do in the afternoon.

Nate swung his arms with a big smile on his face, bouncing on the balls of his feet and looking around the bus station. The people around him sure did look interesting, that was for sure! And so was the mission! At first, Neil had joined simply because his new meister had wanted to, and he couldn't really say no due to the fact that partnering up for a short time and flaking out on the first mission wasn't really cool. But after reading the debriefing and giving it some thought, he couldn't help but get a bit excited for the mission. It had a certain mysterious thrill to it, and Neil couldn't help but feel sympathy towards these town people. After all, getting no sleep was a choice! You couldn't force it!

As he heard Professor Hakoda's debriefing, he couldn't help but pout a bit in disappointing. Right. There wasn't gonna be any cool witch fights or Kishin slaying. Just a boring ol' investigation. Ah, well. For the greater good, he guessed. The whole thing was basically a whole 'Adult leaving the kids in charge' speech. Don't do anything you know you're not supposed to, make sure to work as a team, be careful, call them if you needed anything, radda radda radda. Neil wasn't gonna do anything crazy! Just do the investigation part and maybe explore the town a little bit! He wasn't going to mess up his first impression! If he messed up, they'd make people watch him for the second mission he'd go on or give him the more boring missions, and nothing got to Neil more than people purposefully making things more boring for him.

He watched the bus pull up and he stretched his legs, knowing it'd be a long time before he would stretch them again. He rubbed his eyes, already planning what he'd do on the bus. Talk to some people, play a few games on his game-system, and then even catching a few Z's before...hey...wait.

"Yo! Professor?" Neil called, stepping forward and giving the much taller man a big grin and a wave of his hand. "Sup. Name's Neil!" He introduced first. He just couldn't help it! "I got a question. So, in the debrief papers, it said some kind of magic thingie-ma-bobber was stopping everyone from falling asleep, right?" Neil asked as he ran a hand through his pink hair, his big pink cow-lick springing back up soon after. "Well, wouldn't the same thing happen to us if we go in there? I mean, I'm no expert when it comes to Magic or Sicknesses and stuff, but if its getting into everyone's heads all at once, what's stopping it from gettin' inside ours?" He asked, tapping his noggin with his fist for good measure. Wow. He sounded kinda smart right now! This'd definitely earn him some points!

The grin on Caeden's face wasn't fading, especially  because he was getting right into a mission after only his first day at the DWMA. "I'd say having the ability to stay awake during this mission would be great. But, that depends on whether or not it'll be coming back with us, no!" he chuckled a bit before his face went bright red, at which point he refuted to speak from his own embarrassment. Caeden was still thinking about what this investigation would exactly entail, what sort of magic was causing this? Perhaps that of a witch?

The professor came across to him as worried, so maybe there was a source of real trouble in that town. Caeden remembered the elegant pen I kept in his satchel along with his copy of mission briefings, he took them out and started writing down questions instead of actually asking them which caused the red to slowly drain from his face. Turning to his partner still writing, he hesitated then asked him a question, "Have you ever dealt with magic before? I mean you've been here longer than me that's all..."

Hakoda Fuller

Hakoda smiled a bit after hearing Neil’s apparent enthusiasm in his voice. It was one of the things he was beginning to like about being a teacher at the DWMA; the students always found ways to keep things exciting or interesting and he was a firm believer in the fact that sometimes the students could make the days of some of the people who sought their help. Then again, the people in Dunsmuir could quite well be too tired and cranky to see what he saw in the students. They would have to wait and see on that point.

The question was an honest one and it was one Hakoda was surprised to realize he hadn’t expected. He still had an answer for it, though, which was a good thing. “We have a few different theories. The first is that there did seem to be a time delay before the insomnia kicked in. First they were just reporting strange dreams and a lot of nightmares among the young children so I do imagine you’d have time to investigate before you started experiencing any problems yourselves.”

Then he added, “They’ve apparently had outside workers come in to manage a few structural city problems and these workers haven’t experienced any problems. It’s probably because they’ve only stayed for a brief period of time. That’s another reason why this is solely investigative. If you get yourselves dragged into something long and drawn out, chances are you could experience the same symptoms.”

Watching Neil’s expression for understanding, Hakoda hoped his answer made sense.

Daemon Alexanders

and

Zyra Harriot

Daemon chewed on the bubblegum in his mouth, enjoying the sweet strawberry taste of it as he listened to the professor speak to the group of students. While the mission sounded way too boring for him, Zyra had insisted that they do it so that they didn't have a mishap like so many other missions that they had been on. He rubbed his arm through his jacket, remembering the fight with the weird puppy that he, Zyra, and a few other students had gone to deal with on a mission. It had tore up his arm pretty good, leaving a faint scar from it's vicious bite. The teeth marks had gone deep, but luckily hadn't harmed him too much. Now, Zyra was way more protective of him and the missions he went on, always having him take missions like these with little danger.

Now that they were going to a desert town in California, Daemon was excited. He and Zyra had only been to the desert once, and that was in Arizona, in America. They had hijacked a car and taken it through the winding roads that lead through the desert. Zyra knew the basics of driving, despite not having an American license, so the thrill of it was even better. He mostly remembered the stars though. How they shone brighter in the sky than anywhere else. It was amazing.

Turning to his weapon, he tugged on her arm, a smile adorning his lips. "Hey, Z. Will we get to see the stars again? Like in Arizona?"

Zyra looked at Daemon, then back in front of her quickly. She had been so focused on Professor Fuller and making sure they were all set for the desert that she was surprised that he was asking her a question. In preperation for their mission, Zyra had made sure that she was properly dressed: a form-fitting t-shirt that said DWMA on it, a pair of jean capris, and tennis sneakers. Of course, she never went anywhere without her red cloak, which she had wrapped around her waist. If the sun was too much for her, then she would put the cloak on to prevent any sunburns. Due to her pale skin and blonde hair, she always felt like she heated up more than others. At least Daemon had a little tan to his skin to prevent himself from getting burned easily. Even still, though, he wass wearing a baggy jacket over whatever clothes he had put on underneath, and had a pair of khaki pants with a hole in the knee on as well.

She bit her lip, and after a moment, turned to her meister. "Well...it depends. Back in Arizona, we saw the stars so clearly because of how little artificial light was out there. If the town is like that, then we will probably see a decent amount." Professor Fuller began addressing the questions of the other students, so Zyra hefted her backpack higher on her back. "We'll see when we get there. Do you want to ask the professor anything, Daemon?"

The boy shook his head, bouncing on his toes. "Nope, nope! I want to go to California. We were only there for a short time, and I want to go back! I made sure to pack enough candy to make it through the trip." With that, Daemon dashed around the students and the teacher, leaping up the steps of the bus and swinging around into the isle, grinning as he took a seat right behind the first row of seats. He swung his bag, which was hanging from his shoulder, onto the seat beside him, and opened it, his mouth already watering. He pulled out a lollipop, ripping the wrapper off and putting it in his mouth to nibble on for a while, while placing the gum on the back of his neck so he could continue to chew it later. He stretched his arms above his head, then swung his seat up onto the back of the seat in front of him, getting comfy for the ride.

Zyra, meanwhile, was simply shaking her head. "Moron..." She approached another one of the students, as she couldn't help but overhear the question he had asked his partner, and stood next to him. He was tall, like many other boys at the DWMA. Excluding Daemon, of course, as he was even shorter than her. "In my opinion, magic is something you only have to worry about if you aren't paying attention to it. This sounds like magic, so all of us being cautious would be well advised. Also, haven't noticed you around the schoolgrounds before. You must be a new student. I'm Zyra Harriot, and the idiot who just lept onto the bus was Daemon Alexanders, my meister. Don't pay him much mind. He's a bit of a scatterbrain. But he'll have your back in a problem. Just make sure you don't get him in trouble or hurt. Because..." Zyra held up her fingers, which seemed normal at first. However, in an instant, they morphed into tiny chainsaws, buzzing with life. "I won't let you off easy." Her hand returned to normal, and she patted his back. "Let's all work together with little problems, shall we?

As she stepped onto the bus, she smirked. She found enjoyment in messing with new students sometimes. As she sat down in the seat in front of Daemon, she held her hand up over the seat. Daemon placed a chocolate-mint candy in her palm, which she happily tossed into her mouth and chewed on, while looking out the window a the students, waiting for them to finish up asking the professor questions.

Neil Cyclamen

Neil scratched his head. Huh. A time delay, huh? But for how long, though? Neil wasn't exactly one to be concerned over his own well-being, but it'd be kinda hard to investigate a town of sleepy people WHILE being sleepy yourself. He could stay up for days if he wanted to, but someone's gotta crash sometime. And what if something long and drawn out DID happen? Feeling a headache coming on, he just shook his head and gave the professor a smile. Ah, well! He was asking too many questions! Guess they'd just have to hurry and investigate before it hit em'! He shrugged. "Whatever ya say, professor! Kinda sounds fun, though. Feels like a 'race against the clock' type of deal, huh?" He commented, smiling ever the wider. Turning around, he went and grabbed his bag before turning to Konoba, giving her a thumbs-up. "Come on, ya slowpoke! Time for some mystery busting!" He said to his partner before snickering and getting on the bus.

Choosing a seat a bit in the back, he scooted close to the window and set his bag on his lap. With a small smile, he unzipped it and began to fish around in there, finally pulling out what he'd been looking for; his pink 3ds. Oh, how he loved his precious 3ds! So sleek, so clean, so high maintenance. But most of all...? So PINK! A slight crazy look flashed on his face at that for a few seconds before it was back to his normal chipper smile. Falling back into his seat, he flipped open the system and turned it on. And after screen-tapping, was finally pressing buttons, eyes glued on the flashing screen as he played his favorite RPG. It almost didn't seem like he was there to actually investigate weird insomnia mysteries or even fight a witch.

"Slowpoke? Me? As if!" Konoba frowned. Neil vanished into the bus. A slowpoke, her? No, certainly not. Neil should have seen her on the plane trip to Death City! She'd been on the plane before anyone! Even the pilot! She'd even been the first off it, too! Admittedly, that had been in the hands of a gaggle of security guards, but... Well, because of that, she got to be the last person on-board too! How many were able to say that about their plane trips?

So no, she certainly wasn't a slowpoke. So why wasn't she on the bus yet?

Right... She flexed her left hand. She'd totally asked out a bunch of other guys- and girls- for this, hadn't she? And Neil was the only one here! Had she been too forward, or something? Was telling someone to be here at 12pm and leaving too forward? Man. Maaannnnn. How else was she supposed to ask everybody...? Maybe she should have given them chocolate first... Or a hug... Or... She sighed. Well! It wasn't like moping about it was going to bring them here! Or maybe it would... But it probably wouldn't! She'd just have to ask them again when she got back! Maybe she could bring back some souvenirs to give them to help grease the wheels. No, she could definitely do that! Her parents didn't give her an allowance for nothing, after all! Snatching her suitcase up in hand, a metallic clatter could be heard from within it. Because she was smart. Because she was so very very smart. The other suitcases, she smirked as she stepped onto the bus, were probably just filled with clothes or whatever. But hers? Hers!?

Energy drinks by the dozen. As many of them as she could cram into the thing. A sleep cursed town? Not a problem! The nemesis of night! The slayer of sleep! The retribution on rest! Caffeine!

Taking her seat next to Neil, Konoba had an idiotic expression of pride on her face. Because she was an idiot. With an unjustifiable amount of pride.

And an empty bank account.

Jason Daniels

Jason listened to the new professor with his head tilted to the side, eyes half-lidded. From what he could remember of the mission specs, an unknown cause of insomnia has been plaguing the town for a while now. He supposed that's why he bothered to sign up for this mission, given his own insomnia. He'd be able to deal with the effects just fine given that it's nothing new for him, but he had to admit that he was worried for the others, at the very least due to what could be the cause. Speaking of the others... He withheld a sigh as his partner for this mission, a quite literal newbie in the terms of pretty much everything, asked him his experiences with magic. Jason ran a hand through his hair and contemplated on how to answer that question sufficiently without completely terrifying Caeden, he noticed Zyra step up next to them and do what he assumed was a scare tactic. That also made him hold back a long suffering sigh, given that now he had two things to make sure his partner wasn't terrified of. Maybe he was giving Caeden too little credit, and he could be made out of the same stuff that he himself was made up of. That being the gungho flames of complete and utter insanity and fighting, though that was truly unlikely in Jason's opinion.

This time letting the sigh go, partially to catch Caeden's attention and partially because it was getting tiring to hold it back, Jason threw an arm around Caeden's shoulders and leaned on him lazily. "Now I know what you're likely thinkin' but I'ma have to dissuade you from that line of though real quick like. I've dealt with magic, sorcery, mana, the very energy that holds this universe together in it's mysterious ways, whatever you wanna call it. And I've beaten the life out of all of that with my bare hands. Now image what I can do with ya, a nice ol' weapon in your own right? The heights we can achieve, yeah? Ya don't even need to do anythin' special, ya feel? Ya just transform and let dear ol' Daniels do the rest. And heck, if ya get tired or hurt, dear ol' Daniels will keep ya safe with his own two fists till ya be back on your feet." Jason gives him a lazy but fairly reassuring smile that hold the slightest bloodthirsty edge to it. "And don't ya worry 'bout any of the other students messin' with ya. 'Slong as you're my partner, heh... Well..." Jason's wavelength flickers to life for a split second around the two, just a sharp burst of light and then nothing. "Silly school rivalries and scare tactics ain't gonna be a problem, ya dig?" Jason then pushes himself off Caeden and pats him on the back twice. "Well! Let's get a move on bud, I need to get in the battle hype just in case things start headin' so south ya find yourself north." That said, he stuffs his hands in his pocket and makes his way to the bus, humming merrily the whole time.

Caeden only nodded to the other pair's answer before turning to his partner, Jason. The slight chills he felt from the others talking about magic were offset by Jason's unheard-of confidence, Caeden thought about how the guy would wield him in the first place? He decided to be indifferent towards them for now, but he wrote some of their traits down with his exquisite pen. Then, he headed over to the bus where Jason was.

"I think it would serve you well to realize that I am a scimitar. Your techniques will have to align with that fact Jason." Leaning up against the bus, almost as if he had just appeared there. "That being said, I'm still trusting you with a lot, and by a lot I mean my life! But I think we can rely on each other, and that I can rely on you the most..."

Arrival in Dunsmuir

Time of Day: 11:00 pm
Date: Wednesday of Week 2

Everyone was on the bus, it would seem. The bus driver turned and counted heads quickly - more out of habit than out of any need to truly keep track of everyone - and then he decided that they had waited long enough. Quickly, he started up the vehicle.

“Good luck,” Professor Hakoda called out to them as the door closed for the last time and then the bus departed from the stop without further delay.

There was no need for him to try to hide it; it was going to be a long and likely boring ride for quite a while before anything of intrigue came to realization. The roads were long and weaving, but that made sense because they were heading up into the mountains where Dunsmuir was nestled. That being said, they didn’t get any signs of that view for quite some time. At that point, though, there did come to be quite a view if anyone dared to look out the window.

Then the bus finally made it to Dunsmuir, it was late and it was dark.

Someone was waiting at the bus stop for them, and already, it looked as though they were completely exhausted. It was almost eleven o’clock at night, but it didn’t quite make sense for them to be as tired as they appeared. Students would be able to see that even through the windows of the bus as they pulled up. The bus stopped and the driver opened the door. “Students, we have arrived,” the bus driver announced and he opened the door for them to get off at their own pace after having decided that they would definitely need to stretch.

It had been nearly a ten and a half hour drive.

“Welcome,” the man standing outside the bus would say to them as they stepped off. “I am here to escort you to your hotel rooms for the evening. Mayor Vuleria will be meeting with you in the morning. She wanted to try and get some rest.” The way they said it implied that getting some rest wasn’t quite possible at the moment. He also wasn’t in a position to judge his mayor too much.

Now, there were a few other things readily apparent in the town as the students would step off the bus. Many of the homes nearby, despite the time of night, seemed to have lights on and shadows moving around inside them. There was also something odd in the air - something that not everyone would sense, but that those with a stronger soul perception would no doubt feel - and it made everything seem eerie. It wasn’t identifiable; it certainly wasn’t a witch’s soul, though. That much nearly anyone who felt it would be certain of.

The man added one more thing as he started leading the way. “Mayor Vuleria kindly requests that you keep from doing too much investigation until she’s had time to meet with you. There are a few particulars she’d like to fill you in on.”

Note: Apologies for taking so long on this post. Also, feel free to ask any questions. I feel like this post was a bit fuzzy; I'm not sure if that's just me or not.

Konoba Tetsuo

"So..." As Konoba stepped off the bus, her suitcase was already a few cans lighter. "We shouldn't sleep, right? What're we supposed to do until morning, then...? If we can't investigate then we have some free time right? But it's the middle of the night... Hey! Hey hey hey! Have any of you guys ever been to a club before? They're open overnight, right?" But didn't they not allow minors or something? Actually, how old were the seniors on this mission? Would they be able to get in? Get in and leave Pink and her behind...? Maybe... What could they do then? Getting the lay of the land? Training? Bonding? Maybe they co-

This was it. Her ultimate weapon. Caffeine. The sun could come and the sun could go, but with how low Konoba's resistance to the devilish chemical was, she could care less. She'd keep chugging until her body gave up on her, or the job was done. Not a wink of sleep! She didn't need a single one! At least, that was what she'd told herself. This was exactly how she dealt with her usual late nights, after all... So stretching the effect out over however long this would take, surely, was foolproof. Yes. There wasn't a shred of doubt in her mind as she turned to face her comrades, her third... or maybe fifth can already in hand.

Like it was some sort of sword, she brandished the drink in their direction. "Wait! No! That was rude of me! Seniors, what do we do!? What're your orders!? Do you want us lowly NOT to map out the area for you!? Or, perhaps, fetch you something to eat!? Anything! We're at your beck and call! Right, Neil!?" And now she was on her knee. Thus were the... Side effects of her secret weapon. Truly a terrifying storm of... Chaos she'd become. Mouth even louder than the usual, Konoba pushed into the night without a thought nor care for consequence. Or first impression. Surely, she was acting like a fool, but that was merely the price she had to pay for the terrifying power that she'd called forth for this mission. And you'd likely not see her complaining about it anytime soon. Not because she was the type to accept consequences. She was just too much of a boy to care.

"Or, perhaps, you'd like to quench your thirst! Or fend off your bedrest!? Either way, I can provide post-haste!" Naturally, she flung her suitcase forward, acting like enough of an idiot to make any other teenage girl blush into oblivion.

Neil Cyclamen

Neil stepped off the bus with Konoba, his eyes a bit bloodshot from staring at his 3ds screen for five hours, taking a one hour nap after eating a couple candy bars, and then going back to playing for four more hours. And honestly, he didn't feel tired on bit! Sure, he kinda saw a few spots here and there, but whatever. Neil grinned as Konoba began to speak. It was nice knowing there was actually someone to talk to at night! She'd make an excellent gaming partner...wait. Was she even into Video Games? Before Neil could contemplate this, he soon found his blue-haired companion...kneeling?

Neil snorted as she further rambled. Yeah, right. Maybe if they asked him nicely a few times then sure, but Neil was anything but a servant. Just the whole thought of catering to someone's whims just because they were here longer irked him for some reason, yet he shrugged it off. He was pretty sure his partner was joking...somewhat? Watching with an even wider grin as she walked away, he turned to his 'Seniors' and shrugged. "She's pretty cool, huh?" He snickered before following the caffeine fueled meister.

"Geez, Kono. First ya walk off without me and now you ain't sharin' your caffeine stash? For shame! For shame, indeed!" He joked before stretching and looking around. "Anyways, I think those senior guys are ok without us. Maybe we can, I don't know, go to those late night diners and get some food for the night? I could use a burger...or two...maybe six!" He licked his lips before shaking his head and snapping his fingers. "OH! Ooooor, we can go to the movies and watch a comedy flick!" Neil shrugged and put his arms behind his head as he walked, somehow managing to keep pace with the girl. "I'm down for anything, really. As long as its fun and only gives us minor injuries!" He commented and winked at her.

Jason spent the bus ride preparing himself, and contrary to what he said about getting in a battle hype, he was actually calming down and getting into a more serious mindset. Given his own insomniac nature he really didn't get or need much sleep, and thus he was able to enjoy the view on the way to town.  When they finally did arrive hours later, Jason took the time to stretch out his stiff joints and take a look around the immediate area. Given the information they were given, the town turned out as he expected appearance wise. However, the feel of the town was something that he wasn't expecting, though he really didn't know what they were in for in the first place. Whatever it was, it was unnatural, though not in the way magic was. Snapping back to attention when the man sent to meet them spoke up, he pondered on his next plan of action. Sure the mayor didn't want them to do too much before they met, but the best time to even look for the source of this mess was at night, plus he really had nothing better to do. Rolling a shoulder and ignoring the theatrics of one of his teammates, Konoba he thought it was, he patted Caeden on the shoulder. "Ya go on ahead an' try to get some rest before this curse affects ya too. I'ma do some scoutin', see if anythin' stands out. Might bring me some good questions for the mayor tomorrow. I'll likely see ya in the mornin' so try to not get in any trouble ya hear? Ciao for now." That said, he shouldered his bag and began a trek further into town, extending all his senses, physical and spiritual, in hopes of finding any clue to the cause of this phenomenon.

Hopping off the bus with Jason, Caeden decided to consider his request. "More power to ya then, if you think you can handle yourself without a weapon!" he shouted to him as he ran off. Caeden thought about maybe accompanying him, but the fact that he wasn't able to have him some sort of strange pleasure. Now his next problem was trying to figure out how to occupy himself...

Conserving energy would have to take first priority considering the circumstances of the curse. They couldn't even investigate much, though the temptation had been growing within him. Caeden thought his choice to rest on the bus was looking quite bittersweet now, as he would inevitably end up awake for a long time. Looking around him, he decided that conversation would be the best course of action.

So he decided to walk over to the two remaining students still at the bus. "What do you guys think the reason behind this is? I mean, it feels off , but I don't think it's as off as everyone says it is..."

Into Dunsmuir

Time of Day:11:05 pm
Date: Wednesday of Week 2

The man escorting them could only watch, completely unsure of how to react to what some of these DWMA Students (it was hard for him not to call them children with the way they were acting) were doing. He understood that caffeine was supposed to keep them awake and all that, but surely the students would have known that caffeine was available in town and surely so much would only bring them more problems than benefits.

Furthermore, he had another problem. He didn't think it would be that hard for them to see that he had intended for them to follow him, but it seemed they had completely missed that point of everything. Sure, he hadn't directly said, "Follow me," but he had informed them that his intention was to escort them to the hotel rooms that the town had reserved for them in exchange for their help. Yes, there was a payment as well, but giving them a place to stay had been an important aspect of the agreement and they didn't seem to plan on sleeping. Not even on trying.

Clearing his throat, he tried to get their attention once again. "Ehem! Excuse me... students!" he called out, hoping they would hear him and realize that maybe they had been expected to do things. "I was actually instructed to lead all of you to the hotel for the night. There are quite a few things that I do believe Mayor Vuleria wanted to inform you of herself before you started the investigation." At this point, he wasn't so much concerned that some wouldn't follow him. There seemed to be one or two that were heading off on their own though, and he feared that if he didn't stop it, then he personally would find himself in trouble.

Eventually, though, he sighed and decided that whoever followed would follow. "If you'll please follow me," he stated and then he started turning and walked all the way to the inn. When he arrived, if any had come with him then he would take them inside, get them their room keys and tell them that the Mayor intended to be in the lobby at 8am the following morning.

Note: Just because you are tagged here does not mean that you cannot say that you didn't go straight to the hotel. You could very well be rebellious if you choose.

For those that headed deeper into town, they would quickly come to realize a fair number of things. One: despite people not having been able to sleep for the past few days, the place was a ghost town. Not a single soul seemed to be moving in any direction at all and although lights were on in most of the buildings, there wasn't a shadow flickering in any windows. Two: businesses were all sealed shut with yellow tape as though every single location had gone out of business. Such a thing seemed almost impossible, but it was the situation and how it seemed. Three: all the sewer openings on the ground were open. It seemed an odd thing given the situation, but it was something to see.

Any meister or weapon would feel no overwhelming wave of tiredness, but that was because no one would feel such a thing instantly. It wasn't an instantaneous problem and the file they had all received revealed that briefly. There was one thing that any meister would notice, though. It wasn't a quantifiable thing and it wasn't something they would be familiar with to any major degree. It was a force, though, and it seemed to be trying to pull them downwards even when there was a street beneath their feet. The only way down was through the sewers and there was not a single drip of light down there. It was a dangerous thing to consider at night.

Konoba Tetsuo

"Oh... Riiigghhtt... Do you guys have movies there?" Opening another drink, Konoba fell into pace behind the Mayor's escort. A hotel room sounded risky. What if the bed in there tempted her into wanting to sleep? Just looking at it would probably make her drowsy... Right. So she'd best not hang around there, then. Then... Considering how every place her eyes could see was closed, investigation was her only option! Maybe she could check out why all the stores were sealed shut... Or why all the manholes in the city were NOT sealed shut.

Maybe nobody was around because they all fell in?

Either way, the seniors seemed intent on ignoring her... Or, no no, that sounded rude. The seniors seemed intent on leaving her to her own devices, so, it'd just be herself and Niel. Would he be up for something like breaking and entering or swimming around in a sewer? She'd have to ask him. Then again, the Mayor might just be planning to tell them all about that stuff in the morning. But she wanted to know now! The flame of curiosity had been lit! By the time they'd made it into their rooms, Konoba was convinced. Tonight, she was going to go sewer diving. Absolutely. She had a bit of a bad feeling about it, but... That was just all the more reason to do it! What if there was a Witch down there trying to stop them from investigating?

"So, Neil." She spoke after they'd their room keys in hand, and their escort had let them be. "Wanna go check out the sewers~?"

Jason did hear the man attempt to convince them to follow him to the hotel for the night, but really, even if he went he'd just leave later to do something considering he was already not going to be sleeping, what with his own insomnia being a thing that existed and affected him. With a lackadaisical spring in his stride, he kept on into town, taking note of how unusual the town seemed. For a place that apparently couldn't go to sleep, they had absolutely no nightlife to speak of. Not a single flicker, nor a single voice could be heard, and Jason had to wonder if this kept up to the morning as well. Oh well, their loss he supposed.

As he continued his stroll Jason paused and took two steps back as he nearly fell into the open sewers. Raising an eyebrow he took a glance down and saw nothing but complete and utter darkness and a strange feeling of something wanting to drag him down under through the sewers. He pushed himself back to his feet and took a few more steps away from the sewer. He really, really didn't want to deal with any creepy crawlies right now, especially cause of the ride over, but he could make an exception if push came to shove he supposed. Sighing again, Jason ran a hand through his hair and kept on his stroll down the road. If anything happened tonight, he'd deal with it when it was taking place. Otherwise? Well, he'd simply enjoy a nice stroll in the night.

Neil Cyclamen

Neil slowed to a stop and sighed when the man spoke out to them. Man. And here he was getting ready to chow down on some popcorn and watch a good movie. But if he didn't want to botch this mission, he might as well go back with the guy. And so, he slowly followed behind the group, watching Konoba drink another one of her drinks as she had that look on her face whenever she thought to herself. Although Neil found her cool and fun, there was no way he was going to try and understand the inner-mechanisms of her mind. Whether it was because he was lazy or because he was a little afraid of it, he wasn't sure. Finally, when they got the key, he sighed and hefted up his suitcase. Whelp, time for a boring night before-Huh?

Blinking, Neil slowly turned to Konoba and tilted his head. "Let me get this straight. You want me and you to go out into the night, climb down a dark sewer, and just walk around aimlessly doing who knows what?" He asked, slowly narrowing his eyes. After a moment, he stepped up to her, lifted up a hand...and clamped it on to her shoulder, giving her his most serious look. "Take our bags, throw em' in our room, then meet me outside. Because that idea is the best thing anyone has ever said to me all night." And with that, he stepped away from her and walked outside, a wide grin slowly spreading on his face. Hey, the guy didn't say they HAD to go to bed. And it wasn't like the seniors would argue about two newbies being out of their hair...

Not like Neil'd listen to em' anyway.

Zyra Harriot

and

Daemon Alexanders

Daemon bit into the chocolate bar he had been holding onto since they had left the school, the sweet snack already melting in the sweltering heat. Whenever faced with the amazing sweets he snuck away with him on missions, he always tended to space out. So while everyone else was getting accustomed to the heat of the desert, Daemon had already tied his jacket around his waist, and stared off into the distance as he waited for everyone to be ready. However, one thing did seem to nag at him, and it was a feeling of weight on his shoulders. He looked around, wondering what the source of the feeling was.

Zyra, however, was watching all the other students intently, hoping that none of them would make a stupid move. But that was impossible. They were DWMA students, so they were all bouond to mess something up during their mission. At least, that was what Daemon tended to do when they were working. She quickly adjusted her cloak on her head, making sure it covered all of her skin as to avoid a sunburn.

"Hey, Z? Do you feel that?" Daemon didn't turn to his partner, but Zyra looked at the tiny boy, then around the town as they followed the man to the inn. "Mmm...no, I don't. Why? What is it?" Daemon took another bite of the chocolate bar, before throwing the wrapper into his bag. "I feel like I'm getting pulled..." He looked down at his feet. "...down? I don't like it. How do I stop it?

Zyra looked quizzically at the boy, and then shook her head. "Daemon, you're tired. That chocolate is really bad for you. Let's put our stuff down at the hotel for now before we assume anything, alright? If it's bothering you later, then we will look into it." Daemon usually made up lies in order to make Zyra go and do things with him, and she decided he must only want to look at the sewers.

Daemon, however, mumbled under his breath. Once they reached the inn, they recieved their room keys, and once inside, dumped all of their items on the floor. Zyra began to open up her bags, and looked around the room. "I guess I should get us organized, huh? I wanna make sure we don't forget anything when we leave, so you just don't touch anything, okay? Daemon?" As she pulled out clothes and waited for the Meister's response, she felt a stone sit in her stomach. She turned around, and where Daemon had been moments ago, he had disappeared.

Zyra stood up, looking around her, and pulled her hood off as she sighed. "Oh boy..."

~~~
Daemon held the lollipop in his mouth, letting the taste wash over his mouth slowly as he made his way through the halls of the hotel. He didn't want to stay and watch Zyra sort their clothes. He wanted to look around! And with how empty the town looked, he doubted anyone would stop him if he decided to. And even if someone tried, he was strong enough to fight them. With how heavy Zyra was, his body got accustomed to heavy weights.
As he got closer to the entrance to the hotel, he heard voices, and picked up his pace to a brisk walk until he could make out the conversation. It was definitely the younger students, he could tell that. They were talking about exploring the sewers. A coincidence he just had to take advantage of!
Daemon sped up to a jog, and burst into the lobby with a wide grin around the lollipop in his mouth. "Exploring?! That's dangerous! Dangerous is fun! So you tow are going to have fun without you're experienced older schoolmate! Rude rude rude!" He was bouncing up and down as he walked up to the girl, who he didn't know. "I'm Daemon, a second-year and Meister! So, because I'm older, you have to listen to my instructions if you start dying!" He gave her a salute. "As your boyfriend said, be out there as soon as possible! We must begin the search for the problem!"
With that, Daemon bounded out the front door to greet the other student he didn't know. He looked up to him and placed his hands on his hips, a smirk on his face. "You, kid! Because I'm older, listen to me, and you may not die! Though, dying isn't too bad...gives you good experience. But it's a hassle! So don't do it!" He held out his hand, a wide smile on his face. "I'm Daemon, and as your superior, I demand you take me with you to the sewers!" His eyes twinkled with a glint of excitement.
Neil Cyclamen
Neil was waiting outside the inn, hands in his pockets as he felt himself grinning in excitement. Man, he'd never been in a sewer run before, but this sounded pretty fun! Now, he knew the danger of it, sure. Witches were known to be found in the weirdest of places, and a Witch crawling through the sewers wasn't exactly glamorous, but wasn't really impossible either. As he thought about it more, his grin slowly faltered and he hummed. Actually, now that he thought about it, what WOULD they do if they encountered a Witch? Him and Konoba weren't exactly experts on this meister/weapon stuff. Heck, he didn't think Konoba had tired to hold him yet. He frowned. I mean, they didn't have to fight her, but there was something in his gut that told him that the duo wasn't as stealthy as they thought...but he really wanted to go! The adventure was so close he was smelling it! What to do...What to-
"You, kid!"
Surprised, he quickly turned to the source of the voice, looking up to find the face of one of the seniors...and then he immediately hated him. This guy had only said one sentence and already Neil could feel the irritation rising. Neil didn't like to consider people who were older than him to be any wiser than him. He wasn't exactly a fountain of knowledge, but that didn't mean a lot of people who were older than him were. So, for this guy to literally state that he should listen because he was older was strike one. Strike two was when he said that he was the superior here, and Neil was not for that crap either. And strike three?
...Eh. He'd probably find something soon enough.
"Yeaaaah, listen, bud," He begun, not taking this Daemon guy's hand. But just when he was about to open his mouth again to tell this guy to stick his hand where the sun don't shine and buzz off, he stopped. Hmmm... "Yeah. Sure. You can come." He said non-nonchalantly. After all...
He needed someone to take the hits.
Suspicions in the Sewers
Time of Day: Nearing Midnight
Date: Wednesday of Week 2
There weren’t exactly any open paths into the sewers in the streets of Dunsmuir so if anyone wanted to wander in that direction, they would actually have to move a pothole and get themselves down in a more visible and obvious way. Granted, it wasn’t that obvious now because everyone in the small mountain town was trying desperately to sleep so it wasn’t like there was anyone adamantly watching for students getting into trouble anyway.
It was just a matter of fact that they wouldn’t find a path that said “Sewer Entrance This Way.”
Strangely enough, anyone heading in the directions of the sewers would be able to notice that the water in the sewers actually had a current, and it was fairly strong at that. It certainly wasn’t the way water should be flowing in a sewer and it had a feeling of uneasiness about it that wouldn’t be too difficult to miss. It would, however, be fairly easy to ignore if someone wasn’t really intending on paying too much attention to anything that might make a situation seem more complicated than they wanted to think it was.
The oddities in the water weren’t the only curiosities in Dunsmuir at that moment, though. The other prominent oddity wasn’t something that had anything to do with the town, but it would definitely have a significant impact on the way things went from there. Just before the bus had pulled away from Dunsmuir to head on its next trip, one final person had jumped off the vehicle. It was a person who wasn’t supposed to be on the bus in the first place, but he had also gotten way too bored waiting around for someone to decide to go on a mission with him. Lord Death wouldn’t allow him to go on a mission on his own so Warren had decided to sneak into one instead. Once he was there, he was certain that no one alive would possibly choose to deny his offer for help.
“Wooohoooooo!” he yelled loudly once he was free of the bus. “Hello City! I am here!” Warren, in all reality, had absolutely no idea where he was or what the mission was. He just knew that there was obviously something else going on beyond just normal life. From there he just followed the road and more and more, he started feeling like there was somewhere specific he had to go so that was where he went. The EAT DWMA student found the nearest sewer opening and started trying to pry it open, completely unaware of anything or anyone else around him.
Jason A. Daniels
Jason never did think he would have a peaceful walk this evening. Given the situation of the town and the nature of many of the other students who had signed up for this mission meant that at least one pair would be out and about trying to figure out what exactly was going on, and by extension, liable to get themselves in trouble. Really, that was the main reason he decided to actually walk around aimlessly instead of finding a nice vantage point somewhere and watching the moon, eerie as it is at times. Still, his body knew what his mission was as well as his mind, so it was no surprise to him to find himself standing in front of a congregation of other students quite near to the inn. He had arrived just around the time that Daemon said he was the superior and had to withhold a chuckle, especially as he spotted Neil's less than pleased reaction. Still though, something else caught his eye in the near distance and nearly brought out a sigh from him. There, a ways away, kneeling on the ground and trying to open what seemed to be the only closed sewer entrance in the whole town, was Warren. At this point he just knew Death was going to chew him out for letting these things happen, damned seniority...
Walking closer to the group he tossed a false cheery grin at Daemon and chirped out, "Well, ya shouldn't worry 'bout leadin' or anythin' regardin' seniority, considerin' that I've been here the longest, yeah? Don't ya worry, ya won't be dyin' in my hands, I mean, of course, that is if ya don't act like a complete dunderhead and get yerself and yer Weapon killed, ya dig it?" Giving Neil a cheeky wink as he turned and began making his way to Warren, he regarded the pink male as well. "And ya don't worry 'bout takin' orders from nobody, they ain't got any real grounds to give 'em, ya feel? Just do watcha do bud, ya'll be fine!" With that he continued the fairly short trek towards Warren and simply stood next to the Morningstar Weapon and watched as he continued to attempt to open up the sewer entrance. After a few moments of it, Jason shook his head and nudged Warren with his foot. "Ya do know there's like, twenty open sewer entrances all over town, yet ya decided to go to, most likely, the only sewer entrance that was closed? That's either some damned bad luck, or ya just ignored everythin' around ya in yer rush to hop into some deep, dark, dank sewer systems. Speakin' of..." Jason gives Warren a deadpan stare, "Why in the seven layers of Hell are ya here in the first place? Ya weren't on the list, and I don't see yer uppity partner which means ya ain't here to be back-up. Which in turn means one of us is gonna be put on the choppin' block when Death finds out ya ain't back in Death City, and knowin' my luck, it's gonna be me."
”Evening Star” Warren Langston
Warren had actually been struggling quite a bit when it came to trying to lift up the opening to the sewer. He wanted to get down there and figure out what was going on because for some reason or another, the weapon believed that if he accomplished that, then Lord Death would make him a death scythe without even needing to go through the process of collecting 99 kishin egg souls. After all, what weapon could save a town all on their own? Really and truly, only an absolutely awesome weapon would be able to do that.
He believed himself to be an absolutely awesome weapon. There was no reason why he shouldn’t be able to do it.
Before he could actually make any significant progress, he was interrupted and his head whipped around to see Jason standing there looking all smug and superior or something like that. It didn’t sit right with the weapon student to see someone like that and Warren stood up, crossed his arms, and glared at his classmate. “At least I’m doing more than you!” he proclaimed. “Of course, that doesn’t surprise me. I am the next death scythe so of course I’m doing more. Can you not feel it or somethin’? There’s stuff going on down there and we’ve got to investigate. That’s why Death sent us, right?” He had to ask the last one because he honestly didn’t know.
On the topic of why he was there in the first place, Warren declined to answer at first, instead taking a moment to frame his response around his own greatness which definitely needed to be stated.
“And I’m here because clearly you needed an extra person. You think just you and those three could figure this out? You’ve gotta have at least one weapon of my caliber on a mission such as this one and I certainly think Lord Death would agree.” Now, one thing is important to note with the arrogance in that statement. Had Zyra been present in the group at the time, Warren would not have said something like that because he wasn’t quite that foolish. At the moment though, the only weapon he could see was a NOT weapon so it seemed a fair statement to Warren, at least.
Daemon Alexanders
and
Zyra Harriot
Daemon pouted as the other boy didn't take his hand. Was he not acting friendly enough? Did he do something in the past to offend the boy? Maybe it was the food fights he had partaken in the school cafeteria. Or maybe he accidentally pulled a very mean prank. These were all options, as Daemon typically got himself and Zyra into trouble at school. He was only really worried that the boy would get in trouble.
However, his inexperienced companion gave Daemon the okay to go with him. Daemon's smile stretched wide, and he jumped into the air, throwing his arms above his head. "Yahoooo! I'm gonna go swim in the sewers! It's just like what I did when Zyra and I traveled together." He placed a finger on his lip, looking up into the sky. "Although, she usually got mad at me for it..." He shook his head, and punched his chest with the side of his fist. "Well, you just stay behind me! I've survived a lot of punishments, so my body is strong!" Of course, this was coming from a 5 foot 2 inch teenage boy, so it didn't seem very convincing.
Daemon turned as another student showed up. He squinted closely at the boy, trying to remember him. It took him a moment, and he only slightly listened to what he was saying, and when he was done, Daemon smacked his palm with his hand. "
Oh, I know you! You're Jacob! Or...Joseph. John? Jared?" Daemon scratched his head, scowling. "Names are haaaaard..."
When Jason talked about him being the leader, Daemon gasped and stomped his foot. "
No! No, no, no! I showed up first! And I never get to be the leader! It's always one of you other students! Everyone always tells me to follow them and do what I'm told. I don't want to! No, no, no, no, no..." He crossed his arms and pouted, but turned his attention to where a new person had shown up. It took him a moment to figure out who it was, but when he realized who it was, his grin came back and he held his arms up to get his attention. "Wally! Wally! You're here, you're here!" The boy ran over to the two students, and stood right in front of Warren. "Why are you here? Oh, this is awesome! With you here, now we can get this mission over quicker than ever!"
"
DAEMON!"
Daemon turned back to the building, where he saw his friend exiting. Zyra had very quickly changed, having put on a black tank-top with a crescent moon on it, and a pair of jean capris, as well as some sneakers. She still had her red cloak around her shoulders, but the hood was down, so her blonde hair was fully visible, as well as her dark-blue eyes.
Daemon ran over to her and pointed to Warren and Jason. "Zyra, look! Wally came on this mission with us! Now we can-" His sentence was cut short as Zyra's fist connected with the top of his forehead, and he fell onto his bum. He yelped in pain as he grabbed his head, and glared at Zyra. "What was that for?!"
Zyra bent down and got in his face. "
For running off, you idiot! What did I tell you on the bus ride? It's dangerous to go alone, so you need to take me along with you! Even if you can hold your own to an extent, you're way more powerful with me around! So at least try to be careful on this mission, okay?" She took a deep breath, and let it out as she ruffled Daemon's hair. "Stay close to me from now on."
With that, the Weapon looked up to see what the commotion had been about. She understood Daemon's excitement about this mission, but that didn't mean he could just wander off on his own. She turned to Jason. "
Jason, right? Don't mind Daemon too much. He just gets easily excited, and...well, can be an idiot at times. If you're gonna take him along, you need to make sure he doesn't get himself hurt. He rushes headfirst into a fight without thinking, so you would have to back him up. If you didn't, I would make sure you had the most gruesome death." Zyra said all this in a very steady tone, showing off her protectiveness of the boy.
When she turned to see what was happening at the sewer entrance, she froze. It was almost like a cold wind swept over her entire being in one instant, as her face twisted into an annoyed scowl at the sight of Warren. She hated his arrogant attitude, as well as just his being in general, especially since they were the almost the same caliber as Weapons. She wasn't sure why, but just seeing his smiling face made her stomach flip.
She stalked over to him, Daemon following happily, grinning like an idiot. She stopped a few yards away, and crossed her arms. "Well, fancy seeing you here, you third-rate excuse for a weapon. I'd walk closer and give you an actual greeting if you didn't make me feel like hurling just by looking at you. Why the hell are you even here?"
“Evening Star” Warren Langston
Warren’s eyebrows narrowed when Daemon finally seemed to notice him and he crossed his arms in front of his chest while every inch of his expression took on a sense of superiority. ‘I’m going to be the next death scythe and he doesn’t know my name…?’ was the statement that came off in Warren’s expression but he didn’t actually say that out loud because he did know better than that much at the very least. He knew that to be a star, to have everyone’s eyes on him, he had to be somewhat respectful.
“Well, I’m not Wally, but I’m glad you’re glad to see me. I’m here because it seemed like you guys were going on a big kind of mission and that’s definitely the kind of mission you need someone like me on,” he answered Daemon’s question with his big cheeky smile. “Yes, I’m here and yes, hopefully it’ll be done quite quickly. Not too quickly, though, because I like the time on stage and maybe you can be on stage with me.”
He nearly jumped when Zyra walked in, both because she was loud and because he hadn’t been expecting to see her there. He thought that seeing Daemon without her right along with him right away had meant that she simply hadn’t gone along on this mission. Apparently that wasn’t true, though. For the duration of the conversation between Daemon and Zyra, Warren just tried to keep himself small and out of sight because if she didn’t notice him, then that would ultimately be better for him in the long run. That wasn’t going to last, though.
She caught him eventually and he shrunk and then stood tall.
“Well that’s certainly delightful to hear,” he uttered sarcastically. “That’s why you’ll never be in the spotlight, Zyra. No one wants to hear that.” Childishly, Warren stuck out his tongue at her.
“And for your information, I am here because you need me. I count one… two… three… four… five. You’re one short so you need me. Meisters are stronger with their weapons and you just said that yourself.” Warren had actually been listening which was probably surprising to hear. Bending his knees, he lifted up the cover of the sewer and actually managed to dislodge it and shove it out of place so that the sewer was opening.
Finally Warren turned to look back at everyone who was there. “Well, are we going to see what’s going on or not? I know everyone feels something very off going on down there.” Without waiting for confirmations, Warren jumped down into the sewer and dirty dark water splashed up around his ankles, but it wasn’t going to stop him. He did look back up though and he would wait until others were follow him before he started the long trek through the tunnels.
