How Not to Make a Mary Sue/Gary Stu

What is Mary Sue/Gary Stu?

That is a way of saying "perfect character" or "flawless character". Sounds great doesn't it? No, sadly these types of characters are frowned upon due to leaving no room for RP. So stop making them!

Making a Character

Now it's time for the real deal! I'm going to discuss making your character become your favorite as well as others' favorite!

Appearance

Don't make your characters look super beautiful, getting ladies, et cetera. No one like that. Give them some positive looks but nothing too major, maybe mismatched eye color, limp leg, monocle, make them look cool. Perhaps think about how your friends and yourself look; what are their visual flaws and positives? Try not to make them completely immobile, you want the RP to progress.

How about this for an example:

Has shining blue eyes, but has a broken nose. Well muscled legs, one of them has a limp.

Emotion/Mentality

How does your character act with people? What does he think? Try to not make xer super good at making friends and can make anyone talk, makes everyone smile, et cetera. That's no fun and slightly unsettling. Try to make them have bad things; they snap back when someone asks a question, or yells when talking. Just don't make a No Good Wonder; a character that's flawed in every sort of way. It won't progress RP.

Fighting/Other Skill

If an RP has things like skills, weapons, et cetera., try to keep the amount small and simple; don't make invulnerable characters.

One for One Method

In short: for each positive thing give them a negative. Keep a good number of positives to negatives, don't make things like 50:2 characters or 2:50, these are pointless and stop RP. Keep it like 10:8, allow for an extra little positive or an extra little negative; make your character playable.

Hope this helped! New players always have the same problems.
