The Beginning As We Know It
It was quite a difficult secret to keep hidden.
For one, it was huge. The meant crafting endless lies and isolation whenever possible. It was a tiring secret, but also an exhilarating one. Those evenings spent slinking through shadows were quickly forgotten when the rest of the night was for bounding past moonlit forests and trees, senses heightened and alert, eyes burning bright with the spirit of the Fox.
Even so, it was a relief when her secret could finally be shared. Kaede met Alpen when he was in Wolf-form and Camellia when she was in human-shape. Nothing drew social animals together better than a mutual secret, and the three bonded instantly. But while Camellia believed that there were others and insisted on finding those like them, Kaede and Alpen were content with what they had already discovered. And that was their freedom.
In other words - Moon's Path. Their personal haven, with terrain of every kind: grasslands, mountains, woodlands and streams - bursting with life and prey and many more breathtaking wonders. And the best thing about it? Never did they have to fear the curiosity of mankind again, for the entrance was for one who possessed a wild soul only.
It was a shapeshifter's heaven.
But the problems arose when it began to become just Kaede and Alpen's personal paradise. Camellia's bitterness was evident. The Cat had never made any effort to hide her feelings for the grey Wolf, but he had set his sights on the svelte Fox instead. The rift between the three only widened when Camellia dared to bring another shapeshifter to Moon's Path. The fourth shifter, much to the Fox and Wolf's surprise, was another cat shifter. He was proof that the Weres existed in species, not individuals.
This changed the fate of Moon's Path dramatically. Kaede left the Path to seek out more of her own kind, leaving the Wolf behind.
The two Cats went south of the lake, settling in the cliffs together. There began the bloodline of the Ailurans.
The Wolf was gone when Kaede returned, along with a few reluctant recruits. The Foxes chose the most abundant forest they could find and there they made their homes, just west of the lake. The bloodline of Kitsunes began.
The two species had long adapted to their territory when a Wolf that bore striking resemblance to Alpen arrived, though he appeared to be much younger. He claimed to be the grey Wolf's son and he made permanent camp in the forest clearing, north of the lake, sheltered with pine trees. Last but not least, the bloodline of Lycans had begun.
Now, rivulets of water separate the shifter's land, just as the bloodlines forever divide their loyalties.
Although the First Shapeshifters are no longer leaders, their names have not yet been forgotten.
