Age: 20

Gender: Male

Personality: Above all else, Hiroyuki is obsessed with flying. That obsession governs the majority of his personality above all else. His infatuation with flight started at a young age, and after that, everything paled in comparison. He didn’t want to spend time out of the air. And so, despite growing up in Tsurui, the capital of the Sorako, Hiro is a bit… sheltered. He wasn’t around others and his family to go through learning much more than just the basics. Because of that, some people consider him to be slow. Yet, with most things, he just hasn’t dedicated the time to learn about them.

The naivete about him came from his family life; they valued honesty just as much as loyalty. That meant that his parents didn’t lie to him much. Distinguishing lies or recognizing deceit is hard for him because they’re skills he never used. He’s easily tricked, but a lot of the times he doesn’t notice it because the possibility doesn’t occur to him. If someone that he trusts and/or respects asks him to do something, he doesn’t see a reason not to. He can’t say ‘no’ to the people who he’s close to, and that can sometimes get him into bad situations. Hiroyuki loathes disappointing people, so he does whatever he can to avoid it.

Other than that, Hiro’s blunt, saying exactly what he’s thinking at all times. He sees no reason to hold himself back if he’s being honest. This extends to himself as well. While most people talk to themselves in their head, Hiro does it aloud. This is likely because of the amount of time he spent in the air, where it didn’t matter if he talked because no one could hear him. He’s not discreet about it by any means. Hiro’s optimistic and happy-go-lucky. He seems to be very patient, but a lot of the time he either doesn’t get it when people are making fun of him or being annoying, or he just doesn’t notice. His daydreaming happens often enough for that to happen.

He generally doesn’t enter new situations with any preconceptions, but he makes judgments rather quickly. The correctness of those assumptions doesn’t matter much to him, mainly because he thinks he’s right most of the time, and he’s hard pressed to change his opinions.

His view of the Umiko wasn’t considerably impacted the war, but more so by his parents and his experience involving water. His parents obviously held distrust, if not outright hate, for the Umiko. He was told that they were bad, and he doesn’t want to believe his parents are wrong so he goes with it. However, hating someone requires a lot of effort, so instead of actively working to dislike the Umiko, he just doesn’t care about them. When he does come in contact with an Umiko, he’s more confused than anything else. They’re so involved with water, and Hiro just can’t understand it. If anything, that point is what generates contention between him and the Umiko.

History: Hiroyuki grew up slightly isolated. He wasn’t a very sociable child, and being the baby of his family, his parents didn’t force him to go out and talk to many other kids. He has 3 siblings, 2 brothers and a sister, and his parents believed that was sufficient mingling for the young boy. The problem was, his sister, who was closest to him in age, was 10 years older than him, and his oldest brother was 14. By the time Hiroyuki was old enough to really remember his interactions with his siblings, they were nearing adulthood. They loved him, but on most days they were too busy to play with him.

That forced the young Hiroyuki to entertain himself. His family’s home wasn’t large, so he spent most of his time outside, doing random things in the yard. Before long, he found out about the gift inherent to the Sorako: flight. After that discovery, he spent most of his time in the air, though he didn’t adventure around. He was still ‘too young’, or at least that’s what his parents believed. He had to wait until his 12th birthday to finally leave the safety of his home.

When granted that opportunity, he took full advantage of it. He stayed up until dawn that day, and as he watched the sun rise, he immediately took off. Hours of every day were spent in the air, granting Hiroyuki a freedom and feeling he hadn’t ever imagined, but it was there.

Yet, it soon became apparent that his parents felt they gave him too much freedom. Occasionally, Hiroyuki would return home to them talking about him, worrying about his future and what he would do. His siblings brought it up to him, each of them having been successful in their own way, while Hiroyuki’s only real achievement was his flight. At least, that’s what Hiroyuki felt like they were telling him. Eventually, his parents came forth and put the information in front of him. They told him that they wanted him to continue enjoying himself, but he couldn’t do it 24/7. That he was worrying them.He felt guilty about it, but that guilt just lead him to leave the house more, going on different exploratory expeditions.

It was on one of these journeys that he had his horrifying experience. He’d left Tsurui boundaries to fly closer to the Earth, curious about what everything looked like. With the safety of the clouds behind him, Hiro couldn’t do much when he collided with a bird. It rammed into his face, temporarily knock him out, and he began to fall. He hadn’t been extremely high up, but it was far enough. By the time he regained consciousness, he had only a second before his body hit the water. The cold wrapped around him as he was pulled under.

Water filtered into his lungs as his eyes bulged, his body continuing to sink. He flailed his arms around, hoping to somehow push himself up. However, there was darkness surrounding him. No light came through the waves and he couldn’t make out a direction. He’d almost reached unconsciousness once again when his head broke through the surface. The wind hit his face, and Hiro coughed up what liquid he could, but his body still felt heavy and his mind was dazed. He frantically searched the area around him, eyes landing on the closest land. His inability to swim screwed him, but his proficiency for flight saved him. With the small amount of energy he had left, he attempted to propel himself from the lake. He didn’t get very high and he slammed into the water once again, but the momentum carried him forward. He hit the ground, crawled a few feet out, and then passed out on the shore. When he woke up, he quickly returned to Tsurui and his fear of water was cemented into him.

Hiro didn’t tell anyone about that, not wanting to worry his parents. His mother was getting sick and his near-death experience wouldn’t help her. He’d grown used to disappointing his parents over the years, but he didn’t want to do it forever, and his mom probably didn’t have much time left. He was right in that respect. Though he tried to make up for the years of doing nothing, a few months were all she had before her death. He realized that sometimes he would need to be serious, not for himself but for others, but if he didn’t have a purpose, why should he be serious? He didn’t think he’d be able to deal with the constant pressure.
