THE MECHANIC.
jack could sense the flirtiness in her tone. he chuckled a little bit, and said “honestly, doesn’t happen very often. a few nights here and there but nothin’ too serious. my dad was an alcoholic; he wasn’t the type of alcoholic that didn’t give a shit about his kids and just wasted his life away, though. sometimes i think i liked him better drunk. but, i want more for hannah, so i try not to overdo it.”
“let me guess, growing up in a small, podunk town such as harbour heights made you want to go to a new city & try to better yourself,” he started, before continuing, “when you say you wanted to move from north carolina, i assume you wanted to get away from whatever you were dealing with, with atlas’s dad. not sure if that’s a sore subject for you or not, i know my ex is a sensitive subject for me, anyway. but we don’t have to talk more about that..” he said, before grabbing a soda himself and popping the tab. he then caught a glimpse of the ring on her hand, which caught him off guard. “i’m guessing you’re recently separated, since you’re alone taking care of your son?” he just said he didn’t want to pry about her relationship, but the fact that she had a ring on her hand still was a bit concerning to him given the nature of his ex wife. he didn’t want to get into anything like that and do the same thing that was done to him.
“sorry, just said i wouldn’t pry, but a little bit of background on me..” he said with a short sigh, following with “i was married once, myself. divorced about 3 years ago. i haven’t had much luck with relationships since. most of my ‘relationships’ were just hookups if i’m bein’ honest with you.” he whispered, before tipping back his soda. “however,” he began, “you, ma’am, don’t look like the hookup type.”
“so, how’d i do?” he asked, folding his arms and smirking.
then she asked about hannah, and why they moved to harbour heights. “hannah’s five, goin’ on thirteen.” he said with a sigh of grief, then continued “answer is simple as ever for me, i come from a podunk town such as harbour heights and i prefer to stay in a podunk town. there’s less noise, plus this one has a beach that i can take hannah to at any time. there’s also less of a chance for hannah to grow up in the wrong crowd, less of a chance for murders to happen on the streets. was just lookin’ for a safe haven for us and found us this sweet little slice of paradise.”
