 isabella was the second child of the moreau family. her brother marius was a year older than her, much taller, stronger, and he never let her forget it. in isabella's father's household, women were ranked almost as low as muggles and 'half-breeds', matthew treated his wife and daughter as though they were good for very little beyond cooking and cleaning. when isabella turned eleven, he even claimed that there was no need for her to go off to school because she wouldn't be any good at it anyway; fortunately it seemed he was only joking, or if he was serious, claudette over-ruled him for once. school was an escape for isabella, and while she felt guilty that she had to leave her mother at home alone with matthew, over time she came to terms with the fact that her mother was more resilient than she seemed. eventually claudette broke free. she decided that enough was enough, and packed bags for her and isabella. if she tries, issy can recall the horrible things matthew said about the both of them as they were heading out of the door, feel the sting of his slap on her cheek, see the bruises on her wrist where he tried to pull her back. a new life in england with her mother's uncle would be a fresh start for the both of them, although secretly she is dreading running into marius again at school.
