Soile comes off like the kind of person who would either bite through the peel of a banana or kill somebody. She's very stand-offish, doesn't much like to talk to people. In fact, she's fluent in morse code to get out of talking to people, but it usually takes too long and she never learned Finnish Sign Language. (Or ASL for that matter.) But she's really very nice... if a bit weird.

She's constantly jumpy and seems to have very little mental control over her own actions. She has a terrible habit of buying infomercial products out of fear that the "CALL THIS NUMBER NOW" is a threat and not a request. She tends to be very single-minded, focusing only on her various strange interests and rarely ever making time to talk about the things other people find important. You'll know about Soile's collection of shortwave receivers long before you know whether or not she went to college. She gets easily anxious and can shut down over even the smallest of inconveniences.

But when she's fun, she can be really fun. Her fear of really weird almost conspiratorial stuff has somehow left a blank part in her brain where her preservation instinct should be. She's the kind of person you invite when you're gonna go skateboarding at the junkyard where they cube all the cars.

Soile LOVES old Soviet cartoons, but she's also terrified that Russia is planning to bomb out Finland after the Winter War of 1939. She mostly uses her shortwave to pick up transmissions from aircrafts, at least when she isn't using her more limited CB radio to talk to other amateur radio enthusiasts -- the few that there are in the buttfuck ice tundra of Finland. Sometimes she can go for days without eating or sleeping, only roused when her insulin pump gets empty.

Born Jani Mikkola, which is probably how everyone remembers her, Soile grew up the second-youngest of four kids. Her parents were poor, but in that way where everyone in a small nowhere town is poor. Soile was born with a myriad of health issues, but there was a more pressing issue: Mr. Mikkola's terrible genes.

See, Grandma Mikkola was a schizophrenic. Mr. Mikkola was as well. Though there's no single gene linked to schizophrenia, it is often thought to run in families. Mr. Mikkola was a manic sort, and Mrs. Mikkola kept him in check however she saw fit -- usually by beating him. He was often barely even aware of what was happening -- some argue he was hardly in the right mind to conceive children at all. She told him and her children that this was how it had to be. The people of Rovaniemi just aren't ready for him. Nobody wanted to argue, since mom wasn't scared to raise a hand to her kids either.

Soile showed signs of weirdness from day one. This was not caused by schizophrenia, but rather, autism. Soile was expected to practice several harmful tactics to avoid acting "weird", but none of them ever really worked. Instead they just made Soile anxious.

When Soile was nearly finished with her comprehensive education, her parents finally split up. Mr. Mikkola was put in a home, no longer able to take care of himself, and Mrs. Mikkola took the kids to America to wash her hands of the whole thing.



teen years.

For Soile, the adjustment period was difficult. A lot of her classmates seemed to have the hots for her because she was a pretty blonde European "boy", though most of them got scared off as soon as she opened her mouth. For at least a year, her closest friend was her science teacher, who taught her about shortwave -- and happened to be Swedish, with Finnish as a second language.

She met her friend group in early high school, quickly getting added in by Scotty due to her sort of daredevil lifestyle. She taught everyone about shortwave, and sometimes they'd spend hours phoning truckers on CB radio. For the first time she was happy, even though most people still didn't like her a whole lot. She even hosted a local radio show from her home on a shortwave frequency, though this would die off after high school.

Unfortunately, with the years piling on, it became abundantly clear that Soile was the receiver of father Mikkola's bad genes. She became increasingly afraid that the Soviet Union (which no longer exists) was planning to drop bombs on Rovaniemi and kill her father in the process. She claimed she saw the signs in an episode of A Cat Named Woof.

Though Soile felt safe with her friends, she felt a hell of a lot less safe just on a general level.






adulthood

After Soile finished high school, she stuck around America for a few more years until her family moved back to Rovaniemi -- her father had died, and mom wanted to stay a nice long time to get his affairs in order.

Issues compounded when Soile admitted to her mother that she identified as transgender. As much as she didn't want her mentally unwell "son" homeless in the freezing cold, she could no longer abide by what she saw as more mental illness shenanigans. Soile was kicked from her home and forced to wander alone. She was running out of medications, and it was almost mere luck that she got picked up by Mattias Eklof.

Mattias was a trans-chaser -- someone who looks for transgender partners for their own personal sexual gratification. To an extent, Soile knew this, but she needed a place to stay. Though he was possessive, he also bought her nice things sometimes. Unfortunately, Mattias is also a huge dick. So far in the few years they've lived together, Mattias has threatened to withhold insulin and estrogen at least once a week. He also "rewards" her with extremely necessary medical care, which is probably why her teeth are so bad.

All in all? It's, uh, it's going alright.
