Previously
At the heart of the Dark Ages, in the 13th century, humanity was suffering. Famine and starvation were running rampant, and progress had stalled almost to a standstill. The benevolent creator of the universe, Lord Grapefruit, noticed humanity's plight, and gifted a certain genetic marker. He opened the impenetrable gates of his own personal fruit dimension a crack, such that any human with the marker would have access to a limited supply of fruit each day, to feed themselves and their comrades. After all, if he had given it to all humans, the dimension would have been depleted in a matter of centuries; as a result, only 4 million individuals received this marker, about 1% of the world population. However, Lord Grapefruit underestimated the greed of these early fruitmancers, as they came to be called, for they hoarded the fruit for themselves rather than spread it to their suffering neighbors. the conflicts sparked by this intense hoarding of food resulted in a series of devastating wars, which left half the human population and 3/4 of the fruitmancers killed. These remaining fruitmancers, more desperate than ever, united under a powerful fruitmancer, Igor Yashmenikov. Igor, capable of summoning the lord's potent mind-altering grapefruits, began his crusade, taking control of powerful generals and commanding them to attack their own people. The Lord Grapefuit, disappointed with the folly of man, eliminated this hopeless human race and created a new species, hoping that if these humans had enough to eat and subsist from the beginning, they would be more compassionate and communal than their vile predecessors. And he set about enchanting the doors to his dimension, adding safeguards and fallbacks, to ensure than no one human would ever gain the same dreadful power.
Now
The birth of the new fruitmancer race marks the start of the fruit calendar, year zero. This is the equivalent of 1700 in our system. It is now year 350 AF (advent of fruit), which is the equivalent of 2050 in our system. The technology is more advanced than that of the middle ages (think industrial revolution era, although there is no such thing as guns), although literacy rates are practically 100%. The only continent is North America. Young fruitmancers are required to enroll in the Academy, the government-centralized schooling facility in which they are educated in the sciences and humanities, botany, fruit studies, and summoning. This will be the setting.

Character Rules:
-GRAPEFRUITS ARE BANNED (unless special exception has been granted)
-Characters are limited in their summoning to 5 kilograms of fruit per day
-Characters are limited to one fruit
-Characters can telekinetically move their fruit with their mind; anywhere from 5-100g at a time. 100g can be moved at 1mph, 50g at 2, and so on.
-Characters may summon parts of a fruit (only an apple seed, only a small triangular slice of apple rather than the whole thing, etc.)
-Fruit can only be summoned within five meters of your person, and not inside solid objects.
