the cook

Izelle Howelle

Every mouth must be fed. This is a truth whether on land or at sea, and Izelle views her role and work as the keeper of this truth. After all, a weakened crew cannot function as it ought to, leaving them all in potential danger of what lies beyond. It is her duty to ensure that this does not come to pass, and by the heavens and depths of the ocean itself, she will see that it does not.

the basics.

nickname
None, and don't you dare try
date of birth
17th of April
age
Thirty-one
gender
Female, she/her
sexuality
Bisexual
role
The cook, and a fucking good cook at that. She knows what fresh food looks and feels like, knows how to dry fish and meats to preserve it, and is a damn fine mathematician that can calculate with pinpoint accuracy how much food they need to stock up on when they dock at each port.

the visage.

178 cm (5' 9.5″)
weight
62 kg / 137 lbs
hair
Curly, dark brown hair, often swept up in a silk scarf to keep it away from the salty sea spray
eyes
Piercing brown eyes that seem to always know who has taken the bite she was saving for herself
scars
A pair of long, jagged scars runs from behind her right kneecap and twists around her leg to her ankle. There is a scar of similar shape and size beginning from the front of her kneecap and twisting around in a similar fashion. They look like something had tried to hang onto her...
body type
Slender, but not thin, with wiry, muscled arms from hauling about all those barrels of salt
face claim
Anais Mali

the personality.

Izelle takes her role and responsibilities incredibly seriously, and often appears unsmiling and a bit snappish and impatient when she is preparing food. She is meticulous and careful, aware that one wrong move could result in spoilage that would force them to ration their portions, leading to potential issues with the crew's health. As such, everyone steers damn clear of her when she shuts the door to the kitchen, or emerges to bark orders at anyone who she views as lounging about and can therefore provide her a hand. When it comes to her job, her work, her pride, she refuses to be cowed by anyone into any form of submission and is a force to be reckoned with.

Once the work is done, however, and the work does come to an end, like everyone else's, she becomes quite a bit more amicable, enjoying spinning tales and hearing them from others, willing to take her meals with the rest of the crew and discuss the next great adventure they are to have. Outside of her mantle as cook, she appears much more laidback and willing to laugh and jest with others, often the one to turn her head away should some sort of mischieve be afoot-- so long as it doesn't interfere with her duties.

the past.

Izelle began her culinary journey at a pub near her hometown, however she found the job dull, as they were far inland and had no options when it came to creativity and presentation. As soon as she had saved up enough, she embarked on a journey to the coastal region of Tirie, where she apprenticed in a kitchen of a wealthy family, discovering spices and herbs and ways of preparing food that she had only dreamed of in her landlocked former town. It was here that she really developed her passion for food, as well as the deep importance of handling food with care, ensuring it was preserved correctly, as spoilage was exceptionally dangerous, even on land.

The wealthy family was heavily taken by her and encouraged one of the merchant ships that they owned to take her on as a cook aboard, as their original chef was aging and wished to retire and spend some years on steady land. She worked in tandem with her coworker for many trips, and eventually, was given permission to take over the role and make it her own. However, only a few months after she had received this position, disaster struck. A ship declaring itself as a naval vessel from a rival town attacked the vessel she was aboard, and she ended up barely clinging to life. It was here that she believes she had a brush with a siren, feeling something grab her leg and looking down to see something almost human. Barely managing to haul herself out of the water, a ship of survivors managed to find her and pull her aboard, where they managed to staunch the bleeding before rowing for nearly two days to land and safety.

While the others awaited their vessel home, Izelle was shaken. She was shocked at how unprepared they were for such an attack, at the audacity of said attack, and a burning curiosity for whatever it was that had seized her. She was no longer satisfied just being a cook, and wished to explore more of the world and discover the complexities of human nature along the way, as well as whatever it was that nearly took her life in the ocean. She found that opportunity once she had recovered from her wounds, spotting the pirate ship known as the Dragon's Ghost, and offering herself to the captain's services, intent on getting to the bottom of whatever the hell it was that happened.

the monsters beyond.

Izelle never really gave much thought to the ocean that she had rushed to as a teenager, but after the incident that gave her the scars on her legs, she has taken the time to learn about the stories and experiences of others that believe themselves to come face-to-face with the things that most declare mystical. As a result of her own experience, and the dismissive attitudes of the other survivors, she has an open-mind towards anyone proclaiming to have seen or experienced anything out-of-the-ordinary. After all, isn't it possible that what hapened to her is the norm, but that individuals are dismissed out of hand, or never make it to shore to tell their tale?

the rest.

Izelle is the second youngest of five children. Her parents wanted a boy to carry on the family name, and finally achieved it with her younger brother. She was never particularly close to any of her siblings as a result, as she and her sisters frequently had to compete with each other for whatever leftovers their parents gave them.

She is impartial to animals. Given that she occasionally needs to slaughter a chicken they brought on board, this is understandable. Animals largely seem impartial to her as well, except when the threat of becoming dinner manifests.

As a member of a merchant ship carrying important cargo, she was taught the basics of loading and firing a canon. However, she has never actually fired one in a fight yet. Additionally, since boarding the Dragon's Ghost, she has picked up sword fighting, more for exercise than learning how to practically fight anyone, well-aware that she may freeze up when actually forced to defend herself or the ship.

Izelle discovered her bisexuality once she came to the coastal town and found the grand exchange of cultural norms meant that many people were far more lax about such things as compared to her hometown.

While in the employ of the family in Tirie, she engaged in an intimate relationship with one of the maids there. It lasted nearly half a year, but was broken off when as said maid wished to seek out a husband that she could have children with. While Izelle was bitter for quite some time, it has faded, as she herself has no inclination towards children. She pursued two other relationships after her first, both of which ended due to one member of the relationship leaving Tirie for one reason or another.

Izelle has done her best to stay in contact with those that showcased her the world of cooking when she began her career. She is acutely aware that most would be greatly unhappy to learn that she has turned to piracy, and has done her best to remain vague about what the nature of her current vessel is.

the adventures ahead.

A potential rivalry with fellow pirates or a navy ship // Finding the remnants of a shipwreck and pillaging it and taking on something that carries a curse that they must know resolve before they become victims as well // Some sort of terrifying passage that they must cross, a la Charybdis and Scylla
