the roh group is powerful. this is a fact, true as steel, for a conglomerate family that stands at the very top of the ruthless business food chain in korea, whose influence extends so far it is the prime minister who must come instead of beckon. roh sanghoon holds the world in his greedy hands, and with each billion won traded and each hand shook, he broadens it with an easy flick of his pen.

roh hyeseo is his eldest child, and she finds that the world she has been allowed to know is so much smaller.

there is no doubt she grew up rich, and there is no doubt she grew up privileged, but the unsightly daughter seems to have no place in this world of his. an unruly pawn in his perfect kingdom, so much so that he sent her away for a trivial mistake when she was only 13 and in fear that she might lead his other pieces astray; tossed out unceremoniously to a country abroad and locked away in a boarding school until he forgot her existence and along with it, his anger.

she admits she might have hoped she was called back out of affection — i missed you, my daughter. how have you been? — but when her mother can't even look her in the eye when she first steps through the door, and her brother mumbles her name like a taboo, hyeseo knows the truth is otherwise.

can you blame her for her anger? for her coldness and her wrath and the way she still yearns to squirm out of her father's grasp? she resists rejoining the chessboard, but with each passing day, she finds herself more and more resigned that her life was never hers to live.

roh sanghoon (father) — a crook. an asshole. a really shitty father. hyeseo cannot stand him, and the very sight of him brings her no shortage of displeasure, but she's begun to slowly submit to his word. resultingly, his hold on her leash has lessened, at least somewhat; she hasn't a clue what he's planning.

yoo eunji (mother) — meek as she is, her mother has never once stood up for her daughter, and hyeseo doesn't know where to conjure up rage about it anymore. she attempts, at least, to show what little care she can for hyeseo, but hyeseo is fine leaving their relationship cold.

roh jungwoo (little brother) — once close, but time and distance have pulled them apart. hyeseo still thinks fondly of her brother, but the awkward way in which he interacts with her tells her enough about where she stands. she hopes to mend their relationship, somehow, but hasn't the energy nor an idea of where to begin.
