I would have to say Silver, he had the darkest way of getting his new Pokemon and he was a tough rival to beat in his own right. Blue in the original comes a close second with how his timing was always the worst.

Wally is probably one of my favorites. He had some good character development over the course of the game, starting weak and timid and becoming more confident. Unfortunately, he was never very difficult (okay, not difficult at all).

I like Brendan because he is just generally a swell guy. I really like Wally as well (even if he finds a raltz on the first try while I had to spend hours at it >_>).

All of the rivals of the games I have played are pretty interesting in their own way, but I never get too invested into their arc since they just kinda show up randomly. I see them more as obstacles generally. I enjoyed Wally's arc, though it was not a huge focus of the game so that's not really enough to make him my favorite. Brendan is my favorite of the rivals I've gone up against for several reasons:

- He isn't rude to you and he gives you free stuff

- Down to earth and one of the more believable characters

- First PoC rival character (and only one atm I think)

- Actually focuses on filling the pokedex and wants to be a pokemon professor

- His fashion sense is wonderfully ridiculous

- He seems to genuinely like you, and that makes him even easier to like

The only thing I don't like him is his dumb hat. And I only dislike his dumb hat because I was convinced that it was his hair and was disappointed to find that it was not xD Otherwise, he's just a genuinely fun guy, and I tend to appreciate that more than the brooding or arrogant types. Plus, Brendan has a decent mix of being nice but sometimes little cocky, which humanizes him. He's competitive but also genuinely supportive, so he makes both a good rival and a good friend for the protagonist.

When I was younger, I kinda thought of Barry as cute.

Embarrassing, I know.

I was a weird child.

xD

That and he's was my last Rival in Pokemon, as I never got past playing any of the games that went past Sinnoh.

Though, I might get back into Pokemon now given the sudden popularity spike...

I always found Wally enjoyable, how he grew as a trainer really caught my interest. Especially during the revamped ruby and sapphire, that final fight with him was beautiful.

I think Silver or ??? as I like to think of him (my first playthrough of the game I didn't realise that the cop asking you what his bame was a chance to pick one for him so I just copied what it had said directly and he ended up staying ??? for the entire game)

For one thing he has an actual arc, not a very creative one but reasonably well executed for pokemon.

But the main reason I like him is that he hates it when you wipe the floor with him. Blue's enormous ego doesn't deflate at all right up until you steal the championship from him and the later, friendlier rivals are just permanently unphased and bubbly.

But when Silver loses he gets mad, he throws little tantrums and has to storm off ineffectually. Its intensely satisfying.

ME. TOO. JFC. but yes everything you just said. brendan's my fav; i remember as a kid i always looked forward to the next meeting. then again, he holds some nostalgia factor for me, since sapphire was my first pokemon game.
