With a sigh, Leandra pushed open the creaky double doors leading to the cafeteria and was immediately hit by the noise of everyone laughing and chatting with one another inside.

Grimacing at the sudden blast of noise against her ears, Leandra quickly made her way into the line, holding out her Pip Boy to get scanned for one of her three meals granted on a daily basis. Not that they were all too exciting. Leandra had never personally tasted meat in her life, but she still always felt like her food was a bit bland despite this.

Walking out of the line with a tray filled with vegetables and fruits as well as a glass of water, Leandra warily eyed the groups sitting together before sighting the other teenagers she'd grown up with.

While Leandra wasn't really friendly with anyone in the group, she somewhat enjoyed their company. Plus, she'd learned early on that you get weird looks for sitting by yourself, which kind of ruins the whole moment.

Sitting down at the edge of the table, Leandra began quietly eating her food while listening in on the current conversation.

"Samantha, you can't hide that BB gun of yours forever. Taking potshots at metal objects in the storage room is eventually going to get you noticed. Then you'll get in trouble and lose the gun," said a frowning boy, who had short, ruffled auburn hair and deep green eyes. Freckles dotted his nose and cheeks, while his complexion was pale, as was everyone else's in the vault considering nobody saw real sunlight their entire lives.

Samantha, an exact replica of the frowning boy since she was his twin, spouted back, "Oh calm down, Tommy. Nobody's going to find out and who cares if I have a BB gun? It's not like I could actually kill someone with it."

Raising an eyebrow at this, Leandra's mind immediately began working out the odds of being able to kill someone with a BB gun and she soon came to the conclusion and one could indeed kill someone with a BB gun if they were close enough and shot in the right spots. It'd finally spice up their rather boring existence in this vault, too. Besides the Departure, nothing exciting ever happened here.

Thinking of the Departure brought up a brief memory of her twin brother, which Leandra immediately shoved out of her mind and then refocused on the other twins teasing and now poking and annoying one another.

Realizing the twins weren't helping her whatsoever, Leandra instead looked away from the table and noticed another one of their group members approaching. Chris.

Ever since her twin brother had left for the Departure, Leandra and Chris had gotten really close, mostly because the two rather enjoyed causing mischief in this otherwise boring life.

As it were, the last thing they'd gotten in trouble for was spray painting a wolf chasing a rabbit down one of the hallways. They'd also practiced drawing tattoo ideas throughout the past year up until they finally got the supplies they needed (stealing things nobody needs never hurt anyone). Now, both sported a tattoo each on their shoulders. Leandra had a fox whereas Chris had a wolf.

Leandra grew up drawing a ton and so she'd all but mastered that skill considering the ridiculous amount of free time they'd end up having each day after pulling whatever duties they had that week. Leandra was secretly very pleased to be working in the greenhouse this week, as she loved to practice drawing the plants there. The silence and solitude was something Leandra cherished as well.

The defining sounds of the lower levels of Vault 100 where not accessible to a lot of the dwellers within. In truth, not many would want to enter the lower levels based on the sound alone. But the select few that were aloud down in them, had all but forgotten the noise of the 3 gigantic generators made and used it as their own personal barrier to block out everything else accept working.

Over the noise of the generators, came the sound of shouting. The only real way to talk to each other, the mechanics inside the generator room screamed at the top of their lungs to one another, in a but of a rushed and frantic tone.

"SAM! I NEED THAT CLAMP NOW OR WILL LOOSE THE WHOLE DAMNED THING!!"

The large, gruff voice of a rather burly looking man erupted over the sounds of the generators as his head poked out of a slot between two of the massive mechanical contraptions.

His hair a short mess of grey and dark blond wrapped all the way around his face and back up into the flat cap atop his head that hid the giant bald spot. His steelie blue eyes searching around the room for the other he was yelling at, stopped at the sight of a pair of jumpsuit leggings that were frantically moving around as the upper portion of the young mans body searched through a giant bin.

Finally after a few seconds, the young man lifted from the bin with a pair of rather large clamps in hand. The boy was not unimpressive, but did not have near the build as the man yelling for him. The same steel blue eyes, but with a lighter colored hair, he trotted over to the man and held the clamp out to him over the generator.

"KEEP YOUR SUIT ON! IT WAS BURIED AT THE BOTTOM!"

Sam's father gave him a sideways glance of slight irritation before he grabbed the clamp and ducked back under the generator. After a few more moments of noise, there was a hissing noise, a loud THUNK, and then the generator seemed to sigh a bit. The noise in the room seemed to lighten ever so slightly for a few moments before it turned into humming noise and everything seemed a bit more normal.

Sams father finally remerged from the generator and whiped his head looking down at the machine.

"Well, that should hold for a couple days before I can get a new coupling fashioned. Good work."

Sam gave his father a nod before he reached into the back pocket of his half undone jumpsuit and pulled a dirty rag from his pocket. He whiped his hands then his head then truned back to his father as they made their way to the door together.

"Tomorrow, we'll need to get......"

Sam's father seemed to stop, as if the words pained him. He had forgotten about his son being choosen, and that after tomorrow, he wouldn't be around anymore. Sam to rubbed the back of his neck and kept walking towards the stairs up. His father cleared his throat a bit before continuing.

"Right, why don't you go get some grub. I'll see you back at the room."

Sam waved at his father without turning back and headed up the stairs.

~~~~~
The cafeteria was bustling with the afternoon lunch crowd, though Sam hardly noticed them. On his way up he had since grabbed his rolled up magazine out of his back pocket and was flipping through the pages. It was a magazine he had read countless times before, but it was one of his favorites.
As he flipped through the pages, he felt the presence of someone close behind him and looked up. Two young men had followed him in, one about a foot shorter than him with narrow eyes and very sharp features. The other was about the same hieght but was a bit on the larger size. His face was more on the rounder side, with a very vacant expression until the shorter one began talking in a bit of a shrill voice.
"Hey there Sammy boy. Whatcha got there?"
Sam gripped the magazine ever so tighter, waiting for what he knew was coming. The shorter boy reached for the magazine as fast as he could, but Sam was ready and pulled it away from his grip quick. What he wasn't ready for was the bigger boy grabbing hold of the magazine and staring him down. Sam had to admit, the bigger one was rather intimidating, and past experiences had told him that if he didn't want a sore abdomen or black eye, he would let go.
Sam sighed and released the magazine, before stepping up to the line for lunch.
"It was one of my favorite magazines Drake. Hope you enjoy it."
The shorter boy smiled as he snatched the magazine from the bigger one.
"Thanks Sammy, awfully kind of ya. Wasn't that nice of Sammy, Robby?"
As Sam's tray was filled with steamed veggies and some kind of fruit, something, he tried to ignore Drake and Robby as the pair hovered over him until he turned to go sit. He was once again met with the larger of the two who immediately grabbed Sam's tray and removed it. Sam stood, glaring as the two began chuckling and headed for one of the tables near by. He could try and get it back, but Robby was massive, and Sam just didn't care enough to try and pick a fight with those two today.
He scanned the cafeteria and found a table with some familiar faces at it. He was familiar with most of them; the twins Samantha and Tommy, Leandra, and Chris. A fourth face appeared and Sam felt instantly better as the glowing smile of one of the few people he called friend ushered him over towards the middle of the table.
Auburn hair that fell to her shoulders, dark green eyes, and rosy cheeks smiled at Sam as he walked over and sat down across from the girl. She gave him a questionable glance and then looked around to where Drake and Robby where sitting before looking a bit defeated as Sam sat.
"Did those idiots, get your lunch AGAIN Sam? What a couple of jerks, you shouldn't let them push you around like that. Here."
She reached across her tray and lifted the plate with the fruit on it and set it in front of him with a smile. He looked from the fruit to her and smiled back.
"Thanks Vanessa. But they aren't worth the effort. After all, where would the Vault be without its "Waste Engineers"?
Sam made some quick quotations in the air before skewering a piece of Mutfruit and popping it into his mouth.
@Lioness075
As Chris sat down across from her with a grin, Leandra's attention was drawn away from her best friend, as she noticed Sam making his appearance. Of course, this also meant those two idiots also made their appearance. Why the kid refused to stand up to them made absolutely no sense to Leandra. She'd beat the idiots for trying to use her like that. Sam just let them bully him to the ground and never tried to fight back. It was senseless and it wasn't going to get him anywhere in life. If he didn't stand up for himself now, he surely wouldn't later on. Everyone would push him around like that if he kept up his stupid 'honorable' act or whatever it was.
Shaking her head in amusement, Leandra returned to her meal in time to hear Chris say, "Guess what I managed to scrounge up?"
Glancing across the table with a smirk on her face, Leandra watched as Chris carefully flashed a few crafting ingredients: a baseball, two rolls of duct tape, two small bags of fertilizer, a can of oil, and two small bars of steel. The ingredients to produce a baseball grenade.
Quickly stuffing the ingredients back into his knapsack, Chris then leaned in over the table before whispering, "Want to make it after this and set it off in the basement before we gotta go?"
Quietly laughing to herself, Leandra then responded with a smirk, "Who do you think you're talking to, Chris?"
Smiling widely at her, Chris leaned back and shrugged before saying, "Hey, never hurts to ask, Lea."
Since the two had grown so close to one another, only Chris was allowed to call her by her nickname, Lea, as the only other person who'd ever called her that was her twin brother.
Shaking her head, Leandra grinned before eating some more of her food just in time for Sam and Vanessa to join the rest of the group.
Overhearing Vanessa advising Sam to stick up for himself, Leandra inwardly agreed with her thinking only to roll her eyes and scoff at Sam's response. The kid was seriously asking for it with that kinda attitude. That's how people got stuck in the victim part of bullying.
Still, his engineer joke wasn't half bad, which had resulted in her scoff at him. As it were, Leandra hardly knew the kid since she spent most of her time working at the tattoo parlor that had sprouted up after she'd petitioned for it for a year or two. It took a lot of convincing, but now she had a few hearty customers and even though they were mostly teens, it gave some people a sense of freedom in an otherwise condemned and stiff place of solitude.
After all, it wasn't like everyone was guaranteed to go on The Departure. Some people had to stay back and keep up the Vault population else they'd essentially go extinct.
As it was, Leandra knew she was going to greatly miss her time at the tattoo parlor. Luckily, she'd found a younger teen who was more than excited to take over for her. Her apprentice had shown great talent over the year or so and Leandra wasn't so worried about the business crashing so much as she knew how much she'd miss it.
At the same time, Leandra was more than happy to not be stuck back in the Vault and be forced to settle down with someone and have kids. Kids were most certainly not something she saw happening in her future.
Vanessa's smile widened at Sam's jab at the bullies, a small giggle escaping her lips as she did.
"Still though, I wish those two hadn't been chosen to go with us tomorrow. When we get out of here, no doubt those two will join the first band of raiders they can find."
Sam bit off another bite of the fruit nodding his head in approval before he looked back up with a smile and pointed the fork at Vanessa.
"Or they could just fall into a hole and be eaten but mutants?"
Sam watched Vanessa as she giggled once more and began to eat the steamed vegetables. Sam had always found comfort in talking with Venessa. By far one of the few people in Vault 100 that would come down to the generators, she was also was one of the few people that would listen to Sam when he would go on his crazy ranting about mechanics and improvements he could make to the vault. She didn't always understand what Sam was talking about, having grown up with parents who were the Vaults cooks, but she still found time for Sam.
As the pair ate their food, Sam picked up on a conversation a few feet down the table where the other group of teens were sitting. Normally he wouldn't pay much attention to the conversations of others, but he thought he had heard something used in a sentence that would alarm most people. With a sideways glance he caught a glimpse of Chris and the contents that he was in possession of, and he instantly stopped chewing.
Leandra and Chris were notorious around the Vault for their roles as "troubled teens". Always getting into things they shouldn't, causing mischief where things were perfectly fine, and then there was the tattoo parlor. An idea Sam had thought was a waste of resources, but The Director had granted them permission for it none the less. Sam had always suspected it was because he hopped with something to keep them occupied, they would cause less trouble. Based on the contents of Chris's bag, he was wrong.
Sam shook his head and turned back to his fruit plate, almost half way gone now. Piercing another piece, he nearly had it in his mouth when he noticed Vanessa staring down the table at Leandra and Chris. Before he could say anything, the headstrong girl was already in lecture mode.
"Are you two serious?" She said in a bit of a hushed tone. "We are all leaving tomorrow, and what you want to go out with "bang"?!"
@Lioness075
Leandra smirked at Chris before taking another bite of some tatos on her tray. Not entirely oblivious to those around her, Leandra glanced at Sam when he stopped chewing suddenly. Raising an eyebrow at the teen, Leandra finished her bite in time to hear Vanessa, Sam's girlfriend more or less, get all up in arms over their little 'fun time'.
Rolling her eyes, Leandra said with a taunting tone, "What? You're actually worried about us, Vanessa?"
Chuckling at Leandra's words, Chris then glanced sideways at Vanessa before saying with a grin, "Don't worry, honey, we'll be safe. We've handled our...explosive entertainment quite well in the past. I'd be more worried about your boyfriend once we get out there in the real world."
Giggling, Leandra added in a mischievous tone, "Yeah, wouldn't want your boyfriend to fall down a hole and be killed by mutants, now would we?"
Neither Chris nor Leandra even bothered keeping their voices down, as they teased Vanessa. Though, Chris did continue to keep the crafting ingredients concealed in his bag. No need to draw any unnecessary attention considering Chris and Leandra had a tendency to do that on almost a daily basis.
The twins had quieted down and stopped their bickering at this point, their eyes and heads on the swivel, as they glanced between the new bickering pairs.
Exchanging a brief grin with one another, the twins then leaned in and decided to change the subject.
"Guys, what do you think we'll find out there?"
"Do you really think we'll see any mutants or raiders right away?"
"Ohh, what if we find some survival community or something?"
Leandra glanced warily at the twins and their rapid questions before shrugging and going back to poking at her food. She didn't want to show her excitement this early on considering the countless possibilities of things going awry out there. She didn't want to jinx anything.
Chris, on the other hand, could care less and grinned before leaning in and saying, "Well, if you want to see any mutants, just follow lover boy here. You'll probably find the mutants mauling him to death or something."
Leandra raised an eyebrow at Chris this time, as she felt like he was killing the joke at this point.
Having seen Leandra's look that lacked amusement, Chris shrugged at her before leaning back in his seat and glancing around the table for reactions and responses.
Venessa made a huff and gave Leandra a sideways glance. She had never like Leandra all that much. She had always seen her as a troublemaker and never understood why she couldn't just act civilized like most people in the Vault.
"Please Leandra. The only thing I am worried about is the two of you blowing up something important and the rest of the Vault having to suffer for it."
But when Chris began to tease her about Sam and her relationship, Sam placed his fork down and looked across the table at him with mild annoyance.
"Ya know, maybe it wouldn't be so bad if they blew themselves up Venessa. Maybe they would open up their spots for tomorrow if they blew their arms off."
The subject of Vanessa and Sam's relationship was a bit bitter for Sam. It was true that he had feelings for her, he had ever since they were kids. But whenever he approached her on the subject, she would shy away and it would progress no further. Still the pair remained best friends, but Sam did not care for teasing on the subject.
The pairs jab at Sam's avoidance of conflict didn't bother him near as much as it did Vanessa. She glarred at the pair of them, looking as if she could jump over the table at both of them. Sam gave her a nudge under the table with his boot and then looked at the pair of them. Remembering the words his father had been speaking since before he and his brother were old enough to understand their meaning, Sam's eyes darted from Leandra to Chris as he spoke.
"Strong men know when to act and when to step back."
He let the words hang for a moment before he lifted his fork and stabbed the last piece of fruit on the plate. As he bit the fruit off the fork, he looked down the table at the sound of some of the others speaking. The twins Sam had never minded, they were a nice pair for the most part, a bit on the curious side, but never harmed anyone.
The thought of what was waiting for them on the other side of the Vaults inner door was something that had been plaguing Sam's mind since his name was first announced. That and who would keep the generators running with pops. But he was pretty sure his little brother could do it.
Almost as soon as they had finished speaking, Chris once again threw a jab at Sam. This time it was much less concentrated and it actually made Sam smile at the guys desperation. Vanessa however, did not find it as appealing. She set her fork down, a little less gently than a normal person would and lifted herself from the table. She gave Chris a steely gaze before turning from the table and heading for the door.
Sam sighed and set the fork down with half of his last bite back on the plate. He to lifted himself from the table, not looking at the others. He grabbed Vanessa tray and his small plate before making his way to the end of the table. Before he left them though, he stopped and looked back at the others.
"You know, you guys keep saying that we are leaving tomorrow. Heading out into the wastes. But not a single one of us knows what's going to happen tomorrow. No one does. For all our sakes, I hope that's the worst case senario."
Sam shrugged at them before making his way over to the trash can. He scooped a few carrots and the last bit of fruit from the tray and stuffed his hands in his pockets before he headed out of the Cafeteria after Vanessa.
