WEIGHT CLASSIFICATION

Lightweight

Dragons that weigh 5 tons or less. Usually stand about the size of a large horse, but some can be as large as an automobile or as small as your refrigerator. Tend to be used for carrying mail or for speed sports. Some are able to spit acid or have venomous bites.

Middleweight

Dragons that weigh 6-12 tons. Usually used for sport or combat, but also common in work. More likely to breathe fire, etc. Usually stand about the size of a large truck, but can be as small as an elephant or as big as a train car. Most common weight class.

Heavyweight

Dragons that weigh 13-20 tons. Usually used for work or combat, almost never found in sport. Tend to be rarer than middle or lightweights, and far more likely to possess destructive abilities. Very valuable in combat and highly sought-after. Usually stand around the size of a small airplane, but can be as large as a ship or as small as a mobile home.

GENERAL INFO

Dragons as a species are highly intelligent, able to hear and comprehend human language. They learn languages while in the egg, absorbing them while in the shell so they may hatch and understand any language they were exposed to before hatching. However, dragons are incapable of actually speaking these languages. They are only able to communicate with clucks, chirps, screeches, roars, etc., but their riders and other experienced riders are often able to discern what a dragon is saying by these noises.

Dragons have an average lifespan of 120 years, meaning they generally outlive their riders. Some dragons will accept replacement riders, but most fall into depression or become feral after their rider has died. The larger breeds tend to live even longer, with the largest of them all, the Rocky Mountain Red, living to be up to 200 years old.

Dragons are used to make up the Dragon Corps in almost every country's military, their sheer size and strength being a huge asset in battle. Those with special offensive abilities are even more highly sought-after for the military, being rare and very capable of inflicting damage. The larger the dragon, the more it is worth, especially if it is able to breathe fire or spit acid or roar supersonically.

Dragon racing is a wildly popular sport which is open to all breeds of dragons. It is usually a fast-paced, high-stakes, multi-lap race in which dragons are permitted to brawl amongst each other for the win. Endurance racing has also gained popularity, largely due to breeds capable of flying for hours on end, and although is thus far considered very dangerous and is unregulated, it is now being recognized as a major dragon sport.

Other dragons go into the labor field, where they transport goods or citizens or are used to deliver packages and mail not unlike the Pony Express. Some dragons are used to do farm and industrial work, their immeasurable strength proving a great asset in this type of work.

Similarly to horses, male dragons tend to be heavier and bulkier than females, while females tend to be less tame and controllable and are more strong-willed. Behavior is often the only way to tell the two genders apart until they reach maturity.

Dragons are carnivorous, preferring red meat such as cattle, deer, sheep, or goat, but will also consume pig, fish, poultry, or other seafood. A growing dragon will eat over half his body weight each day, and spend the rest of the day sleeping. A mature dragon will eat a third of his body weight each day and sleep for about 10 hours a day.
