Gyatso is a bald Indian man with warm brown eyes and a wiry frame. The prominent scars along his face do nothing to dampen his perennial smile, but they do make it vaguely unsettling. He wears the traditional robes of Nyingmapa monks, and his early morning meditation with his Malach are a subject of great amusement on the proving grounds.

Mipham Gyatso is lost, but the path to enlightenment can always be found again. He was born Rohan Bhargava in Delhi, but lost his family and suffered grievous injuries to the Nazzadi at a very young age in the first Arcanotech war. Though his injuries had healed within a few months, the scars remained. Angry, hurt, and craving vengeance, the sudden peace left him embittered and despondent. Realizing his hatred was going to do an already embattled humanity no good, he entered the Dzogchen Monastery to learn how to forgive and release his ties to the past, starting by casting aside his name. He took well to his studies and slowly began to heal the wounds the first Arcanotech war had left upon his soul, and for some time he was genuinely happy.
With the rise of the Rapine Storm the monastery, situated in the city of Kollegal in the south of India, was quickly threatened by their rapid expansion. The monks refused to be evacuated in the face of their advance, preferring to stay and aid the local populace until the last possible moment. The Storm overtook Kollegal faster than anyone had anticipated, and few of the monks escaped. Gyatso felt all his fury and pain rushing back for the first time in many years as he watched the monastery overrun by unspeakable horrors from a withdrawing NEG transport helicopter. The loss of his second family was the harshest possible test of his years of training, and though he tries to let go of these negative emotions his current circumstances have left him little time for healing.
He and his fellow monks were sent through standard psychological profiling and medical examinations upon transfer to refugee centers and Gyatso scored extraordinarily well on several critical aptitude measures for the Engel Candidate Program. Follow-up examinations only further demonstrated his compatibility, and though his religious beliefs were a serious concern his extremely strong will was considered worth the complications. His anger over the fate of his nation and the disturbing feeling of other-ness he felt when observing the forces of the Rapine Storm led him to accept the role thrust upon him and agree to be linked to an Engel. Everything in the universe should be one, but he could not muster the proper compassion for these horrors. His mind rejected the very notion they may be one with him, and he them.
He was partnered with a particularly temperamental and vicious Malach which was deemed too dangerous for live exercises in the hopes that he could tame it. Immediately perceiving its tortured soul, Gyatso set about teaching it the tenets of Nyingma Buddhism and meditating with it daily. Though initially recalcitrant, through patience and compassion he made progress and the Engel was approved for live exercises in less than a month. Gyatso is hopeful that by healing his Engel he may help to heal himself, and that together they will again find the path.
