PERSONALITY
Estvan hates any Valken. They only remind him of the pain of the Outlands.
Towards strangers, he's a bit rude. Not disrespectful or hateful, he just particularly doesn't care. For money nor glory. It's been a while since he felt useful.
Towards friends, he's a bit more playful. Makes some fun of people, but in the end loves them deeply. When drunk, makes sure people know how much he loves them.
But overall, distant. Seems like he's always tired or bored.
HISTORY/BIO
Life in the Outlands was not easy. Living beyond ruling meant freedom and opportunities but it also meant adversity and hostility, specially for those not born strong enough for the battlefield. This was the field Commander Pontre made a living under: he commanded a small army that ran around the Outlands, offering help to the small villages who were tired of being pillaged and sacked by thieves and bandits. On one of these excursions his band came across a woman in labour, the ordeal slowly killing her. His men took pity and, as she herself said the father was long gone, kept the baby for themselves. They called the little boy Estvan.
Growing up amidst mercenaries made Estvan, if anything, a little sturdy. He would excel at fighting, but when it came time for soldiers to drink and relax, he would befriend them as best as he could. He was seen as the army's little pet, though he was not strong enough for a real battle. But the time eventually came - and he was 10 - for his first killing. The man was what they called scum (even though most of them had done similar things previously). He had already lost an arm and stood there, on the ground, crying and begging, rolling on his own blood, looking pathethic and weak. Estvan thought it was pityful, but as he was taught, the man proved himself incapable at fighting. He had no place in the Outlands. And Estvan finally swung, and so he finally joined the band; now, as a mercenary.
Around the age of 12 a girl joined the band, called Lavia, in conditions much similar to Estvan. She was 14 and now an orphan, but she had stood resistant as she and her parents tried to pillage the little town Pontre's band were paid to defend. They saw potential, and so they took her in. Estvan grew envious; she was better than him in the sword and shield, and Pontre enjoyed her more because of it. Also, she had the worst temper. This lead Estvan to deciding on being her opposite, and taking on the greatsword.
Pontre was a Warlord, and having seen Estvan's efforts, decided to train him himself. This made them closer, but it quickly made Estvan realize the reason Lavia was very distant and angry constantly was she was being constantly abused by the men. The army was mostly male, and Pontre said they needed this kind of relief. Estvan didn't know what to feel. They were his friends, he thought. He talked to Lavia and they decided to kill Pontre. That failed. Hurt and bleeding, the kids ran away.
On a nearby village they met Andor, a mage boy who helped tend to their wounds. They stuck around, and a week later the village was sacked. Nearly everyone lost something or died, but Estvan and Lavia kept Andor safe. The pain of losing hard work was all around the village. Their clothes bathed in blood but they couldn't stop working. It hurt them. Estvan knew what Pontre did was important, but some things cannot be forgiven.
These three grew together, practicing fighting each other and the incoming thieves and burglars. Killing these criminals gave Estvan a sense of purpose, It felt like he was helping. But they never stopped. There would always be more, regardless of how many already died. So Estvan, Lavia and Andor decided to join the Outlander army. Outlanders had suffered enough. Though they had no idea what the Valken were like, they despised them. They had the means to help everyone beyond the walls. But they didnt. And so now, they would need to face what this lack of care raised.
Battle after battle they fought, until eventually they found Pontre again. He and his band were defending the Base of the Outlander Army. And when they faced, no words had to be spoken and the fight broke out.
Since they didn't know, the whole band assumed the kids to be thieves, so they all attacked. Some of the army fought with Estvan, though they didnt understand why. The others thought it was a betrayal, and so they too got into the quarrel. Soaked in blood, Estvan could only see Pontre beheading Andor, as he had done to thieves before. And this filled Estvan with rage he had never before felt. The sword he held started to swiftly dance through enemy lines. Numb, he couldn't feel or care for who or what he was killing.
Lavia thought she had gotten the upper hand, and she was ready to kill Pontre, when a spear pierced her back. Pontre took the advantage and buried his sword in her chest. This made Estvan truly go berserk, eventually slashing his way to Pontre, to which he shared not a word but butchered in half.
With their commander dead, Pontre ran away not to be killed by the remaining band. He spent his years after that incident on lone travels throughout the Outlands, offering his service of protection to villages in need. He doesn't know what the future holds, and killing has lost all sense. Perhaps he will just keep helping, or perhaps he'll die in the hands of a Valken soldier. Who knows. Who cares.
