PAST Emiko valued Aya's motherly affection for the entire group and overall innocent nature; it was endearing. They had a friendly relationship that Emi would turn to her for guidance under certain situations - whenever she started crushing on someone [once upon a time their biology teacher... that didn't go anywhere!], or she was stressing about an upcoming test that she hadn't totally prepared for and yet; Emiko often found herself wishing they were closer. Ayako's shy persona prevented Emiko from prying further, not wishing to force the girl out of her comfort zone.

PAST In between their occasional study sessions over essays and tests, they helped each other with their affinity for cooking and journalism. Not the strongest writer in her youth, Makoto helped Emiko through her struggles to find the right words as she assisted him in taste-testing many of his meals.

PAST Having lived close to each other in their youth, Emiko and Ren would walk to and from school together. They got along well, with both of them sharing the same sort of ambition for their respective future careers.

PAST Ever the closed book, Emiko saw Noburo almost as a project; someone she wished to draw out and support. She respected his closed-off nature, understood it almost - society was tough and the people were less than ideal - and never pushed him to interact or participate in fear of him drawing further away. When he started to slowly but surely open up, their relationship was full of banter. She was happy, enthusiastic at times and stubborn which often conflicted with Noburo's cold nature. Despite that, she knew what to say to set him off and he shared the same ability. It's how they got along. With their shared interest in Journalism and History, Emiko confided in him about the lead she was chasing about Kumiko's father having an involvement in organised crime; she needed help getting proper evidence and hadn't meant to entangle anyone else but he was stubborn that way, much like her. When her parents whisked her away, Emiko never got to say a proper goodbye to him, only to the collective group that still remained in town.

PAST Basically sisters, Emiko was closest with Umeko. Emi valued her loyalty and ambitious streak, two traits that they shared. She went to every game Umeko participated in, cheered her on wholeheartedly and was the first to hug her when she the match was over. The worst happened and Umeko's father struggled with a terrible illness until finally, he passed away. Watching her broken shell of a friend pack to move her life away was an image Emiko has yet to erase from her memory. Even after the move, when everyone slowly started to break away and live their own lives, these two stayed in touch through constant texting and the occasional Skype call. Over the years, they became less frequent but time was always made to catch up.

PAST When Emiko discovered Kumiko's fathers involvement in organised crime, she had one important choice to make: her friend or her morals. By seeking the help of Noburo, the two played a slight hand in his inevitable downfall. Guilt has plagued Emiko since and she feels a great level of shame for not pushing her beliefs aside for her friends sake.

PAST During her self discovery of journalism, Kai became someone who would often tag along on her small-time 'cases', whether it be the pretty suspicious local ice cream man, the less than honest antique dealer and even the kids at school selling test 'answers' for a hefty sum of 10,000 yen or a pack of cigarettes. Maybe he was only humoring her, maybe he enjoyed their little adventures - either way, they got along and she valued his friendship.

- ➘ Personality ⋮ Since the incident that forced her parents to make the only sane option and move to New York, Emiko has studied from home with private tutors since. Only becoming apart of society again when University applications opened up. Naturally, she sought a degree in journalism and acquired it faster than most with essays being handed in weeks in advanced and work experience at multiple news stations and offices. Her time away from their hometown and being held in solitude has shaped her differently, she still retains some remnants of herself, despite her parents best efforts. Now she's more melancholy than enthusiastic, patient than daring, reserved rather than honest.
- ➘ Bio ⋮ Since a young age Emiko has dreamed of chasing the truth, digging out answers from reliable and unreliable sources, writing columns in a newspaper about the shifty store owner directly across from the most successful CEO in town, about the failure in capturing a suspect when all the evidence was so obvious and drug dealings gone wrong, warning the public of the threats they face on a daily basis but never failing to inspire hope for a better society.
Since the incident in her hometown, her parents promptly moved their entire life away from Japan and to the thriving city of New York for her to get the best education money could buy. While it alienated her from what society had to offer and ripped her away from the life she had back home with her friends, Emiko knew there was no way around it. She messed up chasing that lead. She should have kept her damn mouth shut and not gone to such extreme measures just to report the truth. Especially against her friends father. One life lesson Emiko learned well: people in powerful positions were, indeed, powerful and with her choice to report him, she made a bigger mess than the one she was trying to clean up.
Having lost a piece of herself after the move and being cut off from the outside world, Emiko felt the morals and beliefs she built for herself begin to crumble. They fell utterly and completely after her father died and left a hefty debt in his wake. Her mother ran, fled to another country and Emiko was left to struggle in New York on her own, paying loan sharks every spare penny she didn't need for food, rent, bills, etc. Now she does the occasional odd job, going after sources and answers [like she always wanted] for a less than ideal payoff. The money doesn't go into her pocket. The thrill doesn't last. The truth doesn't matter anymore, only that she can get these people off her back and not kill her like they did her father.
But she made a promise and returning to her past life might just help her regain her old self.
