"Emperor" Symkyn Yharnal Grendel, the "Peacemaker"

katie-s-leon-portrait-revisions-kt-post-closeup~2.jpg

AGE: 20.

PLACE OF ORIGIN: The Capital.

AFFILIATION: Humanity.

OCCUPATION: Third Emperor of the Empire of Grendel.

MUNDANE EQUIPMENT: Compass, sextant, astrolabe, pocketwatch.

MAGICAL EQUIPMENT: Elemental Yharnal Crownrings. When the crowns of the four subjugated kingdoms of the Empire of Grendel were cast down at the foot of his throne, Yharnal had Archwizard Velstadt O'Reighley shrink them to be worn on his fingers as symbols of absolute imperial authority in addition to imbuing individuals who kissed the rings of his hand with the gift of magic, forcing the sycophants that surrounded him at court to themselves become (publicly) arcane or do the most unforgivable and breach long established rules of etiquette. Bringing magic to every corner of the continent on his travels and campaigns, he became perhaps even more influential in the thaumaturgic community than Archwizard O'Reighley was. Each crownring corresponds to four of the magic disciplines of the Empire of Grendel, with the notable exception of aether.

Swurld Mercurial Razorcoil. Yharnal's personal sword during the Quints Crusades that served the First Emperor well in duel after duel against the aristocracy who never failed to meet the Swurdlish Knight in honorable trial by combat, bestowed upon him by an enchanter he saved from the pyre before he rose to prominence. As fast as a whip, sharp as a dragon's claw, and capable of shapeshifting in seconds with only a thought, it is the most hated symbol of the Empire of Grendel's enemies. No other weapon in the history of the continent has slain so much of the aristocracy and yokai within one mere bloodline, revolutionizing the art of swordsmanship in only a generation. Sheathed around the arm in the guise of liquid quicksilver, the entire length of the blade glitters with dissolved diamond dust.

Mechanized Empyrean Uniglobe. Shortly after the mainland of the continent had been conquered, Yharnal commissioned the Grendel Academy for Magic to create a multipurpose globe to offer the overwhelmed emperor near instantaneous access to pertinent information useful for everyday governance. Held in the hand, it offers a database of the known world in addition to many detailed maps. When it's hover mode is activated, it can display and track the movement of observed celestial bodies via holographic projections of light. Though it's compilation of knowledge is far from complete, when it comes to Grendelian matters the lore it contains rivals even the largest of libraries.

HISTORY: Symkyn was born to lead a people that have known two generations of peace, and groomed by dozens of tutors to usher in the just rule of a third. Due to the past achievements of his grandfather, the slayer of men, and his father, the slayer of Yokai, internal dissent and sightings of rogue yokai that yet refuse offers of vassalization as an alternative to being hunted down by fanatic Grendelsh knight-errantry were rarely seen. Whereas his heavy handed predecessors coveted power or wealth, respectively, the Third Emperor seeks knowledge and to further expand the lands of the Empire of Grendel eastward with as little bloodshed as is necessary through diplomatic means and the overdue creation of a truly hegemonic imperial navy.

NAME: Yamato Genosuke “Winter’s Wraith”

AGE:40(looks 20 thanks to the spells developed by his clans)

PLACE OF ORIGIN: Born and raised within the compound high in the Northern Mountains

AFFILIATION: Head of the Eternal Snow Clan

OCCUPATION: Shinobi

PHYSIQUE: (In Progress)

MUNDANE EQUIPMENT: Genosuke carries a pouch to hold his various Shinobi tools. Shuriken, Kunai, Razor Wire, smoke bombs and so on.

MAGICAL EQUIPMENT:

Kamikiri - Divine Cutter - said to have been forged from meteor that impacted the highest peak of their clan’s mountain home. His grandfather, the former leader of the clan, retrieved the fragments of the meteor which took on the properties of the ice around it. Genosuke’s grandfather had his best swordsmith forge him a weapon from the fragments, this Kamikiri was whole. Imbued from the frost of the highest peaks, its color matching the snow of their home, it was passed to his father then on to him when Genosuke became head of his clan. Just a tiny cut from its blade is said the freeze what ever was cut.

Dragon’s Tail - chain and sickle his ancestor had found during the first yokai war. One end of the chain is an all metal hand held sickle and the other end is weighted by a razor sharp spearhead. The chain itself measures 2.5m long and in Genosuke’s very capable hands, it becomes a whirlwind of death. Genosuke has yet to discover the true nature of the weapon.

HISTORY: Unbeknownst to everyone but a select few in the clan, the Eternal Snow Castle is the last defense of the Emperor who has called the northern mountains home since he first journeyed there after leaving Hoken-Chi to his progeny. Genosuke has never seen the Emperor despite his extensive travels through the mountains and superior level of Soul Sense.
Genosuke has lived the entirety of his life nestled between the towering peaks of the Northern Mountains. Since he can remember, he’s been trained in the shinobi arts and has since then refined his skills alongside his clansmen. During his childhood, his mother would often take him down the mountain into Chikara for some supplies and to catch up on the news of the world. Those adventures stopped when his mother passed and his father became head of the clan. Many a time, rogue Shinobi have tried to claim the castle, rumored to contain many secrets to magic that not even the arch wizard of Grendel knew of. During one of these raids, Genosuke fell victim to a poison laced arrow that lacerated his throat. Due to the quick thinking of his bodyguards, they were able to get him to the spellcaster and he was healed with magic. Though he was saved from death, the magic was too late and could not heal his vocal cords. Genosuke has resorted to writing to converse, at least until he can find a way to regain his voice.
Im waiting in a rendering of my character

NAME: "Daimyo" Getsuro Kurokami Chowa "the Silver Tongue of Raiden"

AGE: 30 years old.

PLACE OF ORIGIN: Born from the second Daimyo of Chowa.

AFFILIATION: Stands with Chowa first, humanity second.

OCCUPATION: Third Daimyo of Chowa

PHYSIQUE: Getsuro stands at 5'8, and weighs 140 pounds. His body is lined with wiry, lithe muscle, suggestive of one who is acrobatic and agile. The tug of age has just begun to take its hold in Getsuro, as one will see in close inspection the wrinkles forming around his eyes; but alas, that is the only detail which betrays his youth. His skin is still flush with color, and his hair remains a sleek black shade.
1584feb5ca5b13b8af6c5bef18bb8669.jpg

MUNDANE EQUIPMENT:
  • A formidable amount of currency, capable of purchasing a small business or two.
  • A nonmagical Yumi Bow, with a quiver of 25 arrows.
  • Fine, silken clothes.

MAGICAL EQUIPMENT: (Any weapon, armor, tool or otherwise magical item that your character will have with them at the start will go here.)
  • Fang of Raiden - Getsuro's personal Odachi. Originally wielded by a powerful Oni during the Yokai War, the Emperor of Hoken-Chi defeated the monster, and took this blade as a prize. Of all the special weapons bestowed upon his children, the Fang of Raiden was given to the first Daimyo of Chowa, who passed it down to the second, and now it rests in the hands of Getsuro. Its blade constantly crackles with electric energy, shocking and devastating those it cuts, and conducting bolts of lightning through any metal it touches.
  • Lunar Visor - The helm of Getsuro's armor, commissioned when he came of age to lead Chowa through the Civil War. Comprised of fine leathers and metals, the helm's sole enchantment allows Getsuro to see clearly in the darkness.
  • Coat of Nine Tails - A leather armor bestowed upon Getsuro at least a decade ago. While pursuing enemy shinobi, Getsuro wandered too closely to the forbidden Kage no Josai, and encountered a powerful fox spirit. His humoring of the kitsune and his own good nature saw him be rewarded with a light set of armor. The leather is easily slashed through, and does not offer much protection against blunt trauma, but it is suprisingly resistant to piercing. any wounds Getsuro sustains while wearing the armor immediately get cauterized. The pain is severe, but it does prevent him from bleeding out.

HISTORY:
Born to a war still ongoing, Getsuro did not get to see much happiness in his parents, already made bitter from the seemingly endless war against Chikara and Bitoku. From the moment he could run without falling, Getsuro was trained to be a warrior, and a diplomat. His training was strict, and his schooling was stricter, never allowed a single moment of recreational activity until the moon rose. It left the young Getsuro miserable, for he knew the children of fellow nobles and even the peasants were allowed a significant amount of fun in their day. But alas, what was he to do? He had to lead his country, and he had to be prepared for it.

As Getsuro grew older, he couldn't help but notice his warrior training was getting easier. Or maybe it wasn't, perhaps his skills had soon eclipsed that of his father's? He knew not. His schooling as a governor, as a leader, proved to be getting far more difficult though. All too often, his mother would say he was too lenient, too forgiving; and that not only would the leaders of Akizumi and Chikara stomp all over him for it, even Bitoku would see weakness in his heart. The process of blackening Getsuro's heart was a long and arduous one, indeed.

When he finally did become an adult, his father, second Daimyo of Chowa, forfeited his title to Getsuro, and presented him the family arms: the Fang of Raiden. From there, his father retired to the position of advisor, there to guide his son's actions if Getsuro ever doubted his own judgment. Rarely though, did Getsuro ever have to accompany his soldiers out into battle. But soon came the moment he knew he would dread: negotiations. Surely enough, though, he did manage to make some headway. Through a combination of his own kindness mixed with the stubbornness of never agreeing to enemy terms, he managed to bring Chowa to a state of cold war: where little except pockets of shinobi ever saw the armies of Chowa in action. With this limited peace, he seeks to find a permanent solution to ending the war, as his time spent in Kage no Josai has him concerned of a coming Blood Moon.

In terms of personal character, Getsuro wields a heart of solid gold. He would no sooner shatter his own bones if it meant making a close friend happy. Despite his kindness, he is also absurdly stubborn, and prone to almost never accepting any terms but his own. He is also vulnerable to thinking only in the short term, leaving long term problems gaping wide open, such as his suggestions to barter with the spirits in Kage no Josai, and summon monsters from the Yokai world to cause damage to his enemies.

NAME: Emre “Em” Kahveci

AGE: 27 before rebirth— chronologically, 197

PLACE OF ORIGIN: Roagalia

AFFILIATION: Anti-Grendel

OCCUPATION: Priest, Mage, Musician

PHYSIQUE: Emre is a tall, subtly muscled man of about 6’3’’, weighing 183 lbs.
BC8CA530-B2BF-4FEA-A693-3B74DD119F22.png

MUNDANE EQUIPMENT:
-A faded blue scarf/shawl (full sized, unlike the one in the provided picture)
-A plain silver knife, usually kept hidden
-Some Grendelian currency
-A few hairties
-Relatively decent clothing

MAGICAL EQUIPMENT:
-Coronach: The name of his broken longsword, and a blade intimately connected with his magical ability. It once held a ritual purpose during his priesthood, but obviously it no longer serves that purpose. The sword seems to have broken as a result of trauma to its owner— that is, Emre— but the man is purposely vague on this front. Strangely, it is still sharp enough to be effective.

-An amulet pinned to his scarf that is heavily affected by the vocal and musical magic of a siren. It provides a boost to the strength of the magic through allowing the duplication and throwing of one’s voice or whichever instrument they are playing. After all, the more enthralling the performance, the stronger the spell. Emre also seems to treasure it greatly— marked on it is the name, “Shahan.”

HISTORY: Emre was born into a Roagalian military family and, as such, was expected to follow in their footsteps. However, he was more of the pacifist type, and when he refused to follow tradition his family kicked him out of his home. He was a teenager, by then, but still unable to really manage to take care of himself. And then Father Danaidh of the Phoenixspire found him, and took him in, and Emre suddenly found somewhere he thought he fit. He became a priest under the worship of the Phoenix, and generally took it upon himself to lay the dead to rest, especially victims of violence— he wanted to give them whatever peace they could get. During this time, Emre met a man who occasionally came to their church to sing, and the two of them fell in love. Life seemed perfect.

And then the Quints Crusades happened, and the people who had given Emre a true home were murdered before his eyes as the church crumbled in, ironically, flames. And it was, indeed, a day of rebirth, because when Emre’s throat was sliced open, his lover knew. And his lover was angered greatly at this, and he took vengeance on those who had killed Emre before giving his own life to revive him.

Emre awoke, in the ashes of everything he’d ever truly loved, and began picking up the pieces, left only with a broken sword, an ashen scarf, a scorched emblem, and a weary heart.

In the present day, Emre makes a living as a musician and a mage, using the magical abilities that had appeared after his resurrection, biding his time until he can get back at the Empire of Grendel for what they took from him. His pacifism has been tossed away in favor of avenging that which was lost, not just by him but by so many others.

Despite this, Emre is not a mean person. He is withdrawn, quiet, and general has an aura of sorrow about him, but he still finds it within him to laugh and smile and enjoy the little things in life. He also still shows gentility and respect for others, especially the dead. However, those who would cross him find that fire has burned away the mercy in his heart, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

Onna-bugeisha Tsukuyomi Otono, "Hana no Oni/Demon of the Blossoms."

img.jpg(3).jpeg
----------------

AGE:
Twenty-eight

PLACE OF ORIGIN:
Kiri-no-Mura, Chowa. A small village at the base of one of Chowa's mountains, known for its heavy fog.

AFFILIATION:
Chowa Military

OCCUPATION
Onna-bugeisha of Chowa, veteran retainer.

PHYSIQUE
Tsukuyomi is an attractive woman by most standards; she has high cheeks bones and an otherwise well-designed nose besides a long, fine-edged scar that spans her cheekbones and across the bridge of her nose. Small, cute ears and a pair of pink, full lips that are held in an ever so slight scowl. Her eyes are a crystalline blue color that reminds people of the lakes of central Hoken-chi. Her face is framed by short, black hair that's retained by a white headband emblazoned with the symbol of her family; 4 crimson diamonds.

----------------

MUNDANE EQUIPMENT
Tonbogiri "Dragon Fly Cutter"; This Katana is named for a tale surrounding it; supposedly, a dragonfly landed on the blade, and such was its sharpness that the dragonfly was instantly sheered in two. This blade is drawn from the scabbard at lightning speed with the dominant right hand using an Iaijutsu technique.
Tonbogiri is a katana gifted to Tsukuyomi by her father when she came of age and holds sentimental value to the woman.
The blade is approximately 86.2 centimeters long and weighs 1.2 kilograms. The steel of the blade holds a wave-like pattern of well-forged folded steel. This weapon has a white, ivory hilt wrapped in a tightly woven cotton ito that has been dyed gray.

Samurai Armor; a collection of small steel scales laid tightly over one another; this comprises the functional part of Tsukuyomi's armor, bound in place by steel rivets and golden silk lace. These armor plates are attached to a leather and cloth backing that is then connected to her body via a series of simplified straps and buckles.
This armor was designed to be as lightweight as possible while still protective, as the Samurai had many tasks and skills, including; riding a horse, archery, swordsmanship, and to fight with polearms.
The armor is lacquered in black to protect the materials against the harsh climate. The symbol of her family has been emblazoned across the right shoulder, the symbol of her kingdom across the chest.

Oni Kabuto; A kabuto of elaborate, but sound make. It has been forged through the binding of shaped steel plates to one another to create a tight and protective dome over the head and neck. Gold has been laid into the steel to give it a lavish appearance; the crest is made of gold as well.
The mengu face mask, styled after the scowling visage of a demon, was made by laying paper-mâché and crimson lacquer over a steel base layer.

img.jpg(2).jpeg

MAGICAL EQUIPMENT
Shishikiba " Lion's Fang"; The Lion's Fang blade, Ōdachi heirloom of the Otono Clan that was initially claimed from the hand of a dead Oni after the final battle of the First Yokai War. The blade is crafted from otherworldly steel that is both harder and able to hold a sharper edge than human steel, while still retaining the flexibility to avoid shattering in combat. The kanji-coated blade comes to life with a light purple flame when drawn; this flame burns hot enough to sear flesh upon contact, but supposedly only burns those that the wielder wishes to consume.
This Ōdachi 108.2 centimeters long and has an undulating wave pattern on the blade from the folding process. The hilt is doubled in size from the traditional katana, and crafted from Ashwood, wrapped in a skin that is unknown to Hoken-chi and has an alternating black and gray silk ito along the hilt.

----------------

HISTORY
In the rainy spring months of Hoken-chi, Akihiro, patriarch of the Otono Clan, and his wife, Suki, bore their first and only child, Tsukuyomi. Initially, the two agreed that their child would follow the peaceful life of a shrine maiden, living to venerate those good beings within the world of the Yokai, as well as honoring their clan's fallen. However, as the war with the other families began to drag on, her parent's opinions started to split; her father, suspecting that this war would not soon end, enlisted her to train with his retainers at the ripe age of eight.

From then on, Tsukuyomi would train extensively in the arts of war. Her body was hardened, her mind closed to the stresses of war, her heart froze, and the calculating eyes of a Samurai instead replaced the joyous eyes of a child. Her father was proud of what she had become, knowing that she would be able to forge her path in this world, either by steel or by wit. Her mother, however, held no such pride; she distanced herself from the child, disgusted that her husband would morph their Tsukuyomi into a murderer.

This rift destroyed her parent's relationship with one another. Her father three himself into battle with little regard for his own life and her mother would allow herself to wither away into nothingness. With no life left for her at home and only the knowledge of the blade to guide her, Tsukuyomi departed from Kiri-no-Mura and made for the capital of Chowa and home of her province's royal family.

After arriving, she quickly made a name for herself by defeating a trained retainer of the Lord's Army when he challenged her right to carry a sword. After which she enlisted and began to fight for that same army herself. Her service was notable, both for her prowess with the blade in the field of battle and for the unconventional tactics that she would use to defeat her enemies. From such tactics came her moniker, Demon of the Blossoms, an occasion on which she hid her forces within the branches of Sakura trees and ambushed a group of enemy soldiers that had been pursuing them.

After Lord Tetsuro made the shaky peace with the other nations, Tsukuyomi would return to her new home and prepare for whatever conflict would come next.

As a commander and soldier in Chowa's forces, Tsukuyomi is what she must be; hard, stubborn, calculating, but beneath that exterior lies a woman that ultimately cares for her homeland and the people within it. She would gladly take life or lay down her own for the sake of her people and would do so a million times and more if that's what was what Chowa required.

When among her people, while not necessarily kind, she is tolerant and open, speaking with gentler tones and presenting little in the way superiority. She treats all people, from peasant to Daimyo, with the utmost respect and has no problem bowing to an elderly woman who has imparted wisdom upon her.

NAME: Lyle Damos Brushwood "the Dragonslayer"

AGE: 29 years old

PLACE OF ORIGIN: The Empire of Grendel, from the City-State of Brittania

AFFILIATION: Humanity first, Grendel second.

OCCUPATION: Born of a noble caste, but having taken on the role of "Mercenary".

PHYSIQUE: Lyle stands at 5'9, and weighs 146 pounds. His skin is tanned from exposure to the sun. His hair is a short, wavy, walnut colored style, going to far as to have a matching color of eyes. His face has high cheekbones, and is decorated with a small stubble. In the prime of his youth and physical fitness, Lyle wields the strength to swing his greatsword with ease.
42464906e37f1c389192584d8c74d791.jpg

MUNDANE EQUIPMENT:
  • White silken shirt and leggings
  • Blue surcoat with his family's crest, depicting a golden tree with an eagle's head.
  • 395 Grendeli golden coins
  • Heirloom scarf of Brushwood, made of white silk and trimmed with gold.

MAGICAL EQUIPMENT:
  • Synh: Lyle's greatsword and magical patron. Fashioned from Yokai "red steel", and fed the souls of countless victims, this red blade bears an unquestionable evil aura. Its cross-guard bears a singular, hateful eye which stares with eldritch rage. The sword itself is a Yokai known as a "Binding Weapon", and as such is intelligent, able to communicate with Lyle telepathically. While it appears on the surface as an unbreakable blade and an extra pair of eyes, Synh's true ability is to give its wielder the ability to cast spells far beyond their own capabilities by using Synh as a catalyst.
    latest

HISTORY: Lyle was not born to a family he would come to know. His old home had disposed of him as an infant, leaving him on the doorstep of a well-known Britannian Paladin, Inyere Brushwood. When baby Lyle was discovered, Inyere could not bring herself to abandon an infant, and so he found himself adopted.
Throughout his youth, Lyle was taught manners and elegance, gradually taking on his mother's unrivaled sweetness as his own. But despite his happy and secure life, he couldn't help but feel lonely. His mother was constantly away on duty, and none of the Brushwood servants could fill the hole in his heart that his mother left behind. Every time she came home was the happiest day of his life, but every time she left to keep Britannia and Grendel safe, his gloom grew endlessly.
When he came of age enough to take on an apprenticeship, his mother was to leave. She warned Lyle to never take up her life, as it was not meant for someone as naive and as gentle as him. When she left, she never returned. Lyle could not accept this. To be left to a mundane life with no gentle, guiding hand? He had to find her again!
His search for Inyere took him to a cave near his home. In the bowels of this cave, he found himself face to face with Synh. He wanted to run, but he found the sword's voice in his head, promising power, as well as the strength and courage to find his mother. Tempted, Lyle grabbed the blade's handle, and found his very soul bound to it. He could wield no weapon besides Synh, and he was to do Synh's bidding lest the blade drain and devour his soul. One might have thought that the end of Lyle, but alas, it was not. The blade's whims were cruel, but Lyle, being a dull bulb if there ever was one, always found loopholes in Synh's demands. He wanted to bathe in the blood of a virgin? Lyle's response was to stab himself. Synh desired to hear the screams of his victims? Merely looking at the Yokai blade was enough to solicit terror. Lyle's literal mindedness infuriated Synh to no end, as he had been picked up by an incorruptible buffoon.
Throughout his younger years of adventuring, Lyle mostly dealt with bandit camps, mischievous fairies, and the occassional wizard gone mad. It would not be until the eventful appearance of the mighty Dragon known as Gloombüf that Lyle would earn his title. Using Synh's boosted magic, Lyle brought the beast out of the sky. Some say he managed to survive a direct blast from Gloombüf's fire breath, though of course, Lyle would claim to even if it was a lie. In several decisive strokes, Lyle severed Gloombüf's head from his scaly body, saving Grendel from a substantially sized issue, and garnering a formidable reputation, earning the moniker of Dragonslayer.

To this day, Lyle wears his title with pride. While in his youth, he was a sweetheart who got by on flattery and innocence, as he aged, Lyle lost these traits, growing confident and prideful. While still quick to praise others, he is just as quick to praise himself. Synh has mostly given up on convincing Lyle to commit vile acts, and now attempts to simply goad the Dragonslayer into fight after fight to satiate its eternal Yokai bloodlust.

Name: Damiyo Kai Bitoku, “The Tiger Princess”

Age: 25

PLACE OF ORIGIN: Bitoku

AFFILIATION: The Bitoku clan and its assets, Humanity second

OCCUPATION: Daimyo of Bitoku, 12th Head of the Bitoku Clan

PHYSIQUE: Kai is known for being a battle hardened woman and she has scares along her body to prove it. No one has ever seen them though. Her skin is fair and she stands at 5'4 weighing 150 lbs.

MUNDANE EQUIPMENT: The Bitoku Katana which has been passed down from generations and her own personal wakizashi with her own custom armor and robes.

MAGICAL EQUIPMENT: The crimson cross spear is a weapon that has been preserved for generations by the Bitoku clan, a weapon used personally by Kai's great grandfather, the Forefather of the Bitoku

HISTORY: Kai was born during a conflict that threw Bitoku at war with its neighbors and eventually itself. She was born the third child of a family of eight including her two sisters, three brothers, mother and father. Kai grew up with the same instruction as her two older brothers who were meant to lead the clan when their father was gone. They trained hard to protect their siblings and their people. During the war against the Chowa, Kai lost her eldest brother Tanashige in battle and a couple months later during the same conflict, she lost her second oldest brother, Tanakatsu leaving Kai as the next successor to the Bitoku. She didn't have the same martial training as her brothers and was barely taken to any battles so she could focus on studies and swordsmanship instead of battle and strategy. Her father grieved and was bothered by Kai to taker to battle so she could learn.

With enough pestering, Kai's father allowed her to the battlefield where she commanded a cavalry regiment. During her first battle she was surrounded by Chowa forces and many of her men were losing hope, but Kai forced an opening by exploiting a weak point in the enemy's formation which allowed them to escape the enemy's clutches and lure them into the Bitoku formation where they were pelted by archers and musket fire. Kai proved herself capable after her first battle and her father found her capable in a fight and she was given command of her own army which allowed her to finally work with the other retainers, some of whom were her tutors. Through command and respect, she was working herself up to be the next successor to her father, leading many victories against the Chowa.

Her decisiveness in battle, her ability to act quick and fierce, and to make comebacks against all odds made her abilities a match for a tiger, earning the title "The Tiger Princess of Bitoku" and when her father died, Kai took the head of the clan, the first female daimyo of Bitoku.
