DIVINITY WITHIN
Elysium's best and worst kept secret was the annual Pre-Panhellenic bonfire that is held right on the border of The Forest. It wouldn't be a demigod academy without a grand send-off before plunging students into a series of blood and glory games. Given that the majority of the staff were alumni, this event went relatively unchecked. There was a long-standing tradition that the teachers would turn a blind eye to this one night, with the consensus being that if the students were old enough to risk death in the field for the gods and their own glory, they'd earned the right to some good old-fashioned fun.

This year's first set of games featured a fan favorite: Capture the Flag. The game will take place in Elysium's illusive forest, an area that would otherwise be off-limits during the day. Students will be divided into two teams based on brawn, brains, and support. Throughout the forest is a variety of different monsters and beasts that each team will have to defeat in order to win.

Each team will work together and use not only their powers and abilities but what they have learned at the academy to take down these creatures to emerge victorious. Whichever team wins at the end, will be awarded a beautifully crafted tropaion that was made in-house by the blacksmiths of the academy.

The bonfire starts at 8:00 PM and will end at 9:00 PM, that is when the game of Capture the Flag will start and will go on until one of the two teams ends it by capturing the opposing team's flag.

May the best team win.

TEAM ONE
Lilith - Daughter of Mazu
Tempest - Daughter of Jupiter
Serenity - Daughter of Hathor
Stella - Daughter of Freyja

While these games, Manny had learned, were an Academy tradition, he was quickly developing one of his own. The last time he had sat under a tree and caught up on his reading, and tonight seemed like a golden opportunity to do so again. While he was caught up (ahead actually) of his online courses, he knew he had to study up for the test that was upcoming. That was something that was actually important to him, not some outdated macho contest. The only reason he had even showed up was because the school had mandated the stupid thing. Well that and Serenity had forced him into it. She said he needed to meet new people. So he found himself nearing the bonfire slowly. He looked at the new faces seeing some of the same looks as he had probably worn his first bonfire. He had nearly worked up to going over and introducing himself when his eyes caught on bright green eyes, framed by blonde hair. He froze for a second, taking in her form for a beat longer than he felt necessary. Realizing it was getting into staring territory, he moved towards her. Focused on her face as he was, he failed to notice that one of the roots of a tree was in his way, and he tripped. His training kicked in, and he turned it into as much of a roll as he could. He found himself sprawled on the ground, right at the golden haired stranger's feet.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to fall for you. I mean..." his words trailed off as he wondered what had possessed him to say something like that. He was way too focused on his studies to be interested in anyone, let alone some random person whose name he didn't even know. Awkwardly, he reached his hand up to shake hers. The bonfire roared nearly a foot higher, and turned bright green for a moment, before settling to its normal size.
"Hi. I'm Manny. Um, Manny Cassini. Welcome to Elysium. Sorry for all this," he said, using his other hand to gesture to himself.
"I'm sure you're not used to strange people falling at your feet." He flushed bright red, hoping she wouldn't write him off as a weirdo. He shook his head to clear it. He needed to stop being distracted and focus on his books. Not on women in the woods. Even if they did look like they leapt straight from the canvas of some great Renaissance artist.

Dominik loathed the idea of get-togethers. Get-togethers meant talking, which meant socializing and making friends. None of the things he ever truly enjoyed when it came to Elysium. The moment the annual bonfire was announced he had already settled with himself that he wasn't going. He didn't see the point. After all, he was already forced to attend the games that followed afterward. Wasn’t spending a few hours partying before participating in a bloody event, a bit conflicting? Aimless chat that lead to nowhere, mixed with barbaric demigods, the thought made his eyes roll back into his head.

Then why was he here?

It was stupid, such a stupid idea for him. Dom didn't know the first rule about parties (hell if there even were set rules, or if an academy-sanctioned event could be considered as such) but something was just nudging him to go. It wasn't every day that Dom just did whatever an odd little feeling said inside of his gut, but for the tiniest moment, he had hoped it was his mom. That somewhere she was just thinking about him and pushed him to try something new. He knew it was farfetched, as his mother was a royal bitch, but that slightest inclination gave him the strangest courage.

There were some obvious problems. Dom didn't know what to wear, when to show up, or what to do.
Great start Frosty
, He thought pessimistically as he rummaged through his closet which was a swimming sea of monotones. Even though the nudge had given him the will to go, it didn't give him the will to stand out. He could’ve asked the girl a door down, Hera— but that was fucking embarrassing. And if he was being honest, he really didn’t care that much. After a while, he just settled on a casual outfit, muted colors, plain. Perfect.

He waited a while for it to get dark before finally venturing toward the woods. Dom slowed his pace to a walk as he tried to go through all the possible scenarios in his head. Dread started to set in as he thought about the bonfire, and several times he almost turned around. Still, there was something just pushing him to try, and secretly, deep down, he wanted to, just maybe. Like a very minuscule, minute amount. Dom was so caught up in his scattered thoughts that he wasn't paying any attention to his path and bumped into the person walking in front of him. He wasn't going fast enough to completely knock them over but enough to make them drop their arrow. Arrow? He certainly wasn’t expecting that.

Dominik raised his head to the boy that he had accidentally bumped into. His face flushed slightly as he realized he had seen him around the academy before. A son of Cupid, but he couldn't recall his name. He was... beautiful in a non-traditional— ethereal way, but Dom knew well enough to not approach him. Not only was he rubbish with talking in general, but he knew well enough beautiful and himself didn't mix.

He quickly picked up his arrow, his nervous emotions causing the fletching to freeze a little at his touch. Dom rather awkwardly shoved the arrow into his (not outstretched hands), flinching slightly when his hand brushed against his. He hated the idea of coming into contact with others due to his icy skin, it made him terribly insecure. With as much avoidance of eye contact as possible he muttered a quick and incoherent,
"erhm here"
, before turning and hightailing it down the trail to the bonfire.

This was going great already.

Once he reached the area, voices became louder to bounce around his head in an annoying matter. He had no desire to go straight into the chaos, not to mention he didn’t quite like the dry warmth that the bonfire brought with it. Dominik sat on a log near the edge of the bonfire (far away from the fire itself) hoping to avoid any interaction.

Then what was the point of even coming? If I'm not going to indulge myself like everyone else? Dominik had already gone extremely out of his comfort zone to even be near a social event so he wasn't going to give in to the conversation aspect of it. It was guaranteed that no one would come out of their way to come talk to him, who would want to anyway?

"Hey there, I thought you could use one of these."

Damnit.

He turned his gaze to a girl, presumably a child of Aphrodite, who was holding a drink in her outstretched hand. It obviously wasn’t alcoholic considering how the night was going to play out but Dominik saw the gesture for what it was.

"No"
. He turned his gaze back to the forest and away from her. Most would just give up after this exchange, but clearly Aphrodite children were prone to not giving up on things they started.

"What? No? I don't get a thank you at least?"

He looked back up at her again, his eyes narrowing in annoyance at the fact she couldn’t just get the point.

"Nothing? Alright. Fine. Might as well take the drink then."
And by that, she meant practically throwing the cup at him, which was a bit excessive in his mind but, oh well. It wasn’t like he was going to end this night unscathed anyway. With a quick flick of the wrist, the entire drink landed next to him wholly frozen solid in the grass. The use of his power must've startled her because she took a step back and her left heel broke off in the ground which caused her to fall flat on her ass. Dom merely raised an eyebrow in amusement as she muttered a string of curses and stood up limping back through the grass and back into the gaggle of students. Oh, gods.

Now he was really starting to get the impression that he should leave.

Today marked a new year at Elysium Academy which also meant the annual Pre-Panhellenic games started later that night. All the students were required to attend the bonfire social event before the intense game of Capture the Flag started. Dahlia really didn't care for the bonfire because socializing with the dregs of society was below her but she still went because it beat sitting in her room, bored. Dahlia was standing in her closet, pushing clothes on hangers from left to right trying to find a good outfit for tonight. A lot of her clothes were designer or too dressy to be running and fighting in. Finally, she found the perfect outfit. Since she'd be in the woods, running through grass, rocks, mud, and branches, she chose a pair of black cargo pants to protect her legs. To go along with the pants, she picked out a black halter top and a cropped black jacket. It was the perfect outfit to protect her arms and legs from any damage that could happen to her.

After throwing the outfit on, Dahlia grabbed a pair of black laced boots and slipped them on. To finish her outfit, she added a black canvas belt around her waist and pulled it to where the excess belt material hung down to her knee. She walked over to her mirror and checked herself out. It was a basic outfit but the most important part was that it held no value to her. Dahlia extended her arm out and held her hand in a grabbing position, to which her hairbrush flew across her room and into her hand. She tilted her head and brushed her hair, making sure to spray a bit of hair spray as she did so her hair would stay straight. Dahlia threw her brush on her bed and grabbed her bag. She walked past her mirror to check herself out one last time and she was out the door. It was a 15-20 minute walk from the Mageia building but with the way Dahlia walked, it'd be a 10-minute walk. There were a lot of other students already out and about, walking arm in arm-with friends, chatting and laughing away.

As Dahlia walked, she thought prepared herself for the game of Capture of Flag. She thought of ways she could use her combat skills, her powers, and most importantly, how to win the game. There would be two teams of course and Dahlia was hoping she'd be grouped with intelligent, skilled, powerful, and strong people. She couldn't be the only one on her team with those traits, which really wasn't a problem but sometimes carrying the team can be exhausting a bit of backup is always appreciated. Finally, Dahlia could see where everyone was either standing around or huddling together around the large, bright fiery bonfire. She walked past a group of people and over to the makeshift bar where they were unfortunately serving non-alcoholic drinks. What a bummer. Dahlia grabbed a cup of yellow liquid which she found out was lemonade. As she walked around, she scanned her surroundings carefully. There were a lot of new faces and of course familiar faces.

Dahlia finally plopped down on a tree stump and drank her lemonade. She noticed a familiar girl walking up to her. As she squinted her eyes, she realized who it was. Blair Nicole Smith, daughter of Circe. She and Dahlia were both in Mageia and they weren't really friends, more like acquaintances. Dahlia really didn't care for the raven-haired girl that much because, in her eyes, Blair was a stuck-up fake bitch. Blair specialized in sorcery, illusions, and transmutation. She also has the potential for necromancy which Dahlia actually helped her tap into. So, if you really think about it, Blair is just a knockoff of Dahlia and it showed. But just like a material knockoff, Blair had her flaws, and her biggest one was being less powerful than Dahlia. That is what set the two girls apart and Dahlia relished that. "Hey girl!" Dahlia looked up from her cup and forced herself to smile. "Hey, honey." Dahlia tried her hardest to not sound fake but it was inevitable. After a quick chat, Blair left Dahlia alone and disappeared into the crowd of students. Thank fucking god She sighed and rolled her eyes as she took another sip of her drink. It was going to be a loooooong night and she was ready to get it over with.

The first official day of Elysium dawned upon the school. Upperclassman shouted HOORAY while the newbie freshies shook in their boots, anxious about this new atmosphere. Though the caramel-skinned girl, who stared at her own reflection was nothing of the sort. In actuality, she was quite excited to begin a new life around people like her- kind of like her. She was told by a group of who she believed were Satyrs that some of the student attendees weren’t all that nice. Most of them grew up in wealthier, more privileged families, while others were flat out assholes. For example when she was asked about her group- Pangea to be precise, the goat people scoffed. Shaking their heads telling her about a fellow dorm mate, Dominik: Son of Khione. They filled her in on his harsh demeanor and impolite personality in general.

Anahera looked away from the mirror and out towards her window. Eyes locked on the orange hue casted across the tree line. A bonfire. What a first day celebration! A celebratory bonfire before a brutal came known as capture the flag. The game in its self made Hera a bit nervous. Capture the flag was always an intense game, then to add a bunch of demi-gods into the mix. A shit show to say the least.

With a deep sigh it was time to get dressed. Out of her comforting pajama set and into an oversized sage green sweater, slipping a pair of black leggings up her legs. To go with the comfy outfit she simply slipped on her beaten up white converse shoes. Her natural hair was out. Mid-length brown curls descending from her scalp and rolling over her shoulders, flowing elegantly as she walked around her room grabbing random jewelry- including the shell necklace gifted from her mother. Sliding on a few golden rings she made her way out door, walking straight into the chaos.

The brisk air met her face, sending instant chills down the back of her neck. Scents of burning wood filled the air while tunes filled her ears. There were so many more students than she originally thought. Elysium had been quite the large school but even then she wasn’t expecting such a populous campus. As she walked her way towards the flames she stuck her hand out, softly grazing a small flowering-berry bush. Once her flesh made contact the flowers turned into native berries scattered across the forests floor. She smiled looking back at the flourished plants. But now her first stop. The drinks. She walked towards the open set up and looked around at all the different colored liquids. Yellow, orange, pink, the list went on.

She shimmied through a group of students and grabbed a random cup, making a B-line for the far back where she would stand alone taking small sips of her lemonade. Watching the party ensue.

oh to be lost in the woods again!

This whole situation was batshit insane.

Tempest had been sitting with the fact that she was a demigod for a couple years now. A child of Jupiter. So called king of the Roman Pantheon. Here she was, twenty-one, a first year in a school? for demigods. It was like it was right out of a novel. None of it felt real but it was clearly fucking real because here she was, standing in a room that had been assigned to her, expected to get dressed and prepared for a game of capture the flag. Absolutely insane. And Tempest loved every second of it. Why not live out her dreams of being an action heroine? Instead of a movie, this time it was going to be real.

One problem; she knew what to wear for a normal game of capture the flag. Toss a group of demigods in that were unknowns? And they had powers? Tempest was clueless as to what she should expect.

She rummaged around a bit more in her luggage, realizing with remorse that the only pants she had seemed to bring were sweat pants and ripped skinny jeans and neither of those were going to be convenient enough for her. So shorts won out. She paired it with a lacy tank-top (for attention) and a flannel (to cover herself up when shit got serious. Something told her she was going to need to. That same thing told her to pair it with her combat boots, so she went about lacing those up.

Tempest couldn't help but think about how her mother would react to all of this. Her perception was definitely skewed from actual reality. Where she expected something collegiate and organized, here was Tempest getting ready to succumb to an onslaught of trials that would likely put her poor mother in a coma. Hmph. The bitch would deserve it.

Boots fully laced up, Tempest stood up straight and headed to the door. She didn't even bother looking at herself in the mirror- the outfit would have to do; and she'd have to make a mental note to buy some better clothes before shit got serious.

------

Finding her way through the trees to the bonfire was a struggle at first. Sure, a normal first year would have huddled up with all the other first years to try and find their way together. Tempest wasn't about that, though. She was more interested in finding her own way. Even if it meant she wouldn't make it in time for anything. She-- wasn't beyond following someone that caught her eye though. They seemed to be heading in the right direction, and it was better than any other option Tempest felt like she had. (Ask for help? Never!)

Now, however, as Tempest stood around the bonfire with other demigods, looking down at a man that had literally fallen at her feet? She wished she'd stayed lost.

She'd felt him staring before and she had tried to just ignore it, hoping he'd realize what he was doing and buzz off. She'd been vibing before, not quite talking with anyone yet, but enjoying the environment. There was no booze at the party, which was sort of lame, but she guessed it made sense considering the activities they had planned for the night. Still lame though, she was gonna stick by that one.

Even more lame because she was far too sober to deal with this right now. It was too late, his eyes had caught hers and down he went, his foot catching on a tree branch. She laughed despite herself, a reaction she wasn't able to stop before it happened. It had taken her by surprise when he'd fallen. Part of her wondered if he was alright, while the other part of her tried to stifle the giggle that erupted out of her before she could stop it. The part of her that wondered if he was alright seemed to win out, and she'd been just about to ask him if he was when he-- used the opportunity to hit on her?

The giggles stopped, and Tempest couldn't help but arch a brow at the brazenness of the guy.

He seemed to cover it with an introduction, which Tempest also wasn't entirely certain about. Still, she reached out to shake his hand, even if she was a bit suspicious of him.
"Tempest."
She didn't offer him a last name.
"Actually, I'm pretty used to people falling at my feet, strange or not."
She pulled her hand back from the handshake and gave him a curious once over. He wasn't bad looking- actually he looked pretty sweet. And Tempest didn't totally hate goofball humor mixed in with flirtation.
"You're certainly not the strangest."

She stood at her full height and peered down at him, then rolled her eyes-- perhaps a bit harshly, but it was meant to be playful... sort of.
"Well, aren't you going to get up? It's hard to talk to you when you're way down there."

    full of antici......pation!

Another year, another set of reasons for Serenity to fall more and more in love with what she had some to think of as her second home, Elysium Academy. She found comfort in her room here, knowing that there was a system in place to keep her and everyone else safe. It put her mind at ease in a way that it wasn't when she found herself outside the Academy. She also loved the sense of community here. Sure, they were starting off the year strong with an annual competition, but even amongst the competition there was a love and camaraderie shared that was beyond anything Serenity had ever experienced. It made her heart feel light and airy, and sweet smile seemed permanently painted on her face.

She'd gotten dressed early on, wanting to make the time to tune her guitar. Despite the events that might occur afterwards, what was a bonfire without some music? And Serenity was more than happy to provide that to everyone. And, as a bonus, it would also help her focus on the competition at hand. She was clad in what she liked to call "army chic". She looked like a military brat with fashion sense. A pair of green khaki pants hugged her waist and covered her legs all the way down to her boots. A black long-sleeved tee covered her arms and torso. The fit was a little tight, but she could still move in it. That's all that mattered.

She could hear the sounds of people in the dorm around her running around and getting ready for the night and she couldn't help but smile. The excitement they held was getting to her too, she could feel the thrill of it all coursing through her veins. She began to hum, allowing the feeling to surround her and fill her voice. And then-- she stopped. She hadn't meant to start humming-- the air seemed to become more still around her, as if the influence of her voice was ebbing away from the area. She had felt light-headed before, she hadn't realized it until her focus returned to her. If she had hummed any louder, anyone passing by might've been influenced by her, and even though it was a positive emotion, she had a lot of issues compelling someone to do something against their will. It was a fear she hoped to conquer by participating in the games this year.

Serenity cleared her throat and focused more on the task at hand.
"Serenity, girl... you can't get all wrapped up in that right now. Nobody needs to be feeling your feelings."
It was a gentle reminder to herself, and she tried not to let the guilt consume her. She knew it was misplaced, at least in this instance. She fiddled with her guitar strings until each one of them had reached their perfect pitch, which she could hear and easily recognize these days, and interesting side effect of her nature of birth. Pleased with herself, she strummed the strings a little, warming her fingers up for the night ahead. Not that she typically fumbled anymore, once she'd come into her power it seemed as if music had become second nature to her, not just a passion.

The sound of closing doors suggested to Serenity that people were making their way to the bonfire. After a couple more strums on her guitar, she stood from her sitting position on the floor and strapped her guitar to her back. She took that moment to examine herself in the mirror. They might get a little rough and tumble later, but Serenity still cared about looking good.
"It's giving... Kim Possible."
She just realized the combination of clothes read that way. She'd be lying if she said she hated that. Kim Possible was a badass bitch, and she totally didn't mind channeling her.
"If no one else thinks that's cool, they're idiots or they're lying."
She shrugged playfully at her reflection, then giggled at herself, feeling a touch ridiculous.

"Alright, time to get out of here."
She fixed her ponytail to sit a bit better on her head, and then she was on her way.

--------

Serenity loved a good bonfire, and she was sat as close to it as she could, basking in the warm glow of the flames. The flickering light danced across her skin, and when it caught her eyes, they sparkled. She was far enough way that she could have someone sit with her as she played, if they chose to.

She had her guitar back out and was playing one of her original pieces for whoever wanted to listen. She wasn't singing though. She rarely sang in public anymore. It was difficult for her to keep from getting emotional, and that was risk enough in itself to influence the people around her. Signing up for the games was one thing, it was consent to be exposed to someone else's power. The bonfire was a neutral space, and it wouldn't be right to do that here, good feelings or not.

Serenity's eyes scanned the growing crowd, and landed on her close friend Manny. He looked a little dazed, and upon further inspection, it seemed that someone had caught his eye. Her gaze followed his line of sight and examined the girl that Manny was now be approaching.
"Good for him,"
she muttered softly to herself. She'd been almost surprised that she'd managed to convince Manny to be involved in the bonfire at all. She'd made the case that it would be a beautiful experience, and that he needed to put himself out there a little more. And here he was really putting himself out there. She was shocked, and honestly a little proud of him, and then--

Manny fell on his face in front of the girl, his foot caching on an exposed branch, and Serenity's fingers stopped playing, hovering frozen over her guitar for a moment. She fought the urge to go and make sure he was alright. She knew he didn't need her to hover, but her heart hurt from him, and secondhand-embarrassment threatened to bring tears pinpricking at her eyes.

He seemed to recover well enough, seeing as the two of them were now shaking hands, and Serenity felt herself relax again, her fingers picking up where they had left off in the song. Unfortunately, Manny was too far away for her to listen in, so he was just going to have to update her later. She just hoped the girl was nice.

Not wanting to stare at her friend too long, her gaze began to scan the crowd, smiling at people as they caught her gaze. Until her eyes landed on Dahlia and her smile faltered, but only just a little. She didn't appreciate the presence of Dahlia, that mush was certain. However, she was beyond letting the woman get to her at this point. She had no interest in Dahlia and her attitude.

As her first song came to a close, the returned her attention back to her guitar, thinking of what song she ought to play next.

Another year, another day full of panic attacks. It was routine at this point for Valentino to have several panic attacks on the first day of every new year at Elysium. His anxiety would get the best of him and he'd break down. All those years of therapy his mother had put him through seemed to not have helped him. He was a nervous, anxiety-filled mess. So, Val became his own therapist and searched for new coping mechanisms. That's how he found out that flying was the best solution. Every day for about an hour or two, he'd go flying. It was good for him and his mental health because he'd be able to clear his mind and focus on getting better at doing his favorite second hobby. Archery helped somewhat but since he had to be focused, he would worry that he'd miss a shot and cause some freak accident. So, he stuck with flying for now. And it did help him, his panic attacks lessened, yes, but they still happened. Valentino was always stressed and going through something that triggered his anxiety and he cannot catch a break. Today, he had gone an hour and a half over his normal flying time. He was having a bit too much fun, soaring through the air, doing tricks, flipping, and turning. The sun was starting to set and he needed to get back to his dorm to get ready for the bonfire happening later that night in The Forest. Valentino dreaded going because it always triggered his anxiety, having to interact with others and not knowing if they were judging him. Val did one more flip in the air and slowly descended, landing upright on his feet. He flapped his wings quickly which caused the leaves and dirt around him to blow up into the air and he made his way to his dorm. On his way, he noticed there were already a lot of students crowding around in the Mess Hall. Val wormed his way through the crowd and finally, he made it to his destination with no interactions.

Val kicked his shoes off and threw himself on his bed. He sighed and rolled over on his back. Making sure to position his wings a certain way so wouldn’t crush them. As he stared up at his ceiling, he thought about his life before Elysium which wasn't completely stress-free but it was definitely less stressful than now. Val missed being in Greece, being with his mother, and most of all, her cooking. It was one of the few things that helped calm his anxiety. When he was stressed, she'd make a huge pot of Stifado, a Greek beef stew. It was the best thing ever and he missed it and her so much. But now he had his life here at this demigod school with all kinds of people from different parts of the world. Val didn't have a lot of friends at Elysium but he did have an awesome best friend. Zahi Clarke was the most amazing, talented, intelligent, and beautiful person ever. He always had Val's back and he was the only person who could calm Valentino when he was having a panic attack and Val didn't know what he'd do without him. Not only that but since Val's life had changed so much since he arrived at Elysium, he also changed physically when after a few days of being at the academy, he grew his wings. Now that was the worst experience and moment of his life. Having your flesh ripped apart as bones come out of your back and you cannot do anything while this happens so you don't risk damaging them. Those three months of pain were the worst and the only person who was there for Valentino was Zahi. Zahi also helped Val with cleaning his wings since they were so large and it was hard to reach certain places on them. Val really was glad to have someone like Zahi by his side and he wouldn't trade him for anything.

Valentino finally decided to get up and get ready. He slowly slid off of his bed and onto the floor. He let out a long and loud groan as stood up and made his way into his bathroom. Twenty minutes later, he was back in his room drying himself off and looking in his closet for an outfit. It only took him a few minutes before he chose the perfect outfit. Val picked out a white tracksuit with red stripes on the left side and he paired it with his Airforce 1s. He threw on a white tank top underneath the jacket and put the rest of his outfit on. Walking over to his mirror, he grabbed his bottle of cologne and spritzed some on while checking himself out. He looked good but he wasn't ready to leave for the bonfire. All he wanted to do was invite Zahi over and watch a movie while cuddling. That would be so much better than this god-awful social event. Val pocketed his phone and grabbed his bow and arrows. His weapon wasn't the best accessory but he couldn't leave without and because he also needed it for the Capture the Flag game that was taking place after the bonfire.

Valentino left his dorm room and made his way outside. As he went through the last door that led out, he took in a deep breath of fresh air. The air smelled of ash and smoke. He made his way down the stone steps and through the crowds of students. While walking, Val could feel his chest tightening and he felt like he was suffocating. His heart was beating fast and hard while his body temperature went up, making him sweat. He was having a panic attack. Val stopped walking and leaned up against a tree. He got himself to calm down after a few minutes by thinking about things he enjoyed in life. His mother and her cooking, flying, archery, and Zahi. He grabbed one of his arrows from his quiver and turned it between his fingers. Val continued walking and he fiddled with his arrow to keep his nerves calm. As he walked, he was so focused on his arrow that he didn't know he was about to bump into someone. That someone was Dominik Strom but Val didn't know that. The two bumped right into each other which caused Val to drop his arrow. Right as he went to pick it up and apologize, the brunette boy grabbed it first and shoved it back into Dom's hands. What felt like a shock wave when the unknown boy's hand touched Val's was something different, something he'd never felt before. The boy didn't say anything except "Erhm here" before speedwalking away. Val couldn't even say anything back to him or apologize but it was okay, he'd see him again somehow.

Val stuck the arrow back into his quiver and continued walking to the bonfire. He finally made it after a few more minutes of walking and the first place he went was to the makeshift bar for some soda. He grabbed a cup of what he was hoping was Coke (Thank god it was) and went to go sit somewhere as far away from everyone as he could. Val sat on a stump and drank his soda, waiting for his best friend to show up and save him.

The consistent thump of music filtered out from underneath a door within the Iatros dorm, the door already decorated with stickers and a golden nameplate reading, ‘Z. Clarke’. On the flip side, Zahi was sitting at his vanity performing an expert balancing act. He was texting one of his cousin’s back with one hand, the other holding a wand of mascara that he was currently applying to his eyelashes, and finally, a nail file held gently between his teeth. It truly wasn’t a routine with them unless they were multitasking.

Today was the day! Zahi had been counting down the days till this afternoon’s bonfire, followed by the start of the games. Every minute at Elysium so far seemed to be filled with training and making connections but tonight was when the scales tipped to things more serious. They’d already stretched, getting in a morning jog to prepare for Capture the Flag which Zahi fully intended on winning. Kicking ass and taking names. Anticipation bubbled steadily under his skin, as well as frustration. How the fuck did he get placed on a team without either of his best friends? Well— calling Tempest his best friend was a bit of a stretch considering they’d only spoken a few times, but Zahi just knew the freshman and he clicked on another level.

And of course, he couldn’t forget his dove— Valentino. They’d been inseparable since their freshman year, attached at the hip like conjoined twins. Zahi had wanted to spend the afternoon getting ready in Mageia with Val, but that meant potentially running into Dahlia and he hadn’t planned on ruining his night this early. (Considering they had been placed on the same team! Yay! Zahi was practically overjoyed— not). So instead they’d settled for meeting at the bonfire, much to Zahi’s dismay. They didn’t particularly enjoy leaving Val to fend for himself when a setting like this made the other uncomfortable. Still, Zahi didn’t want to suffocate him either (even though he’d already become attached to the birdbrain).

Zahi had just put the finishing touches on his look, which was simply some waterproof mascara and a bit of gloss— hell, they were probably going to come back covered in blood and dirt so there really wasn’t a point in trying to look nice. But, Zahi was Zahi, and yes, they were going to look damn good stomping somebody’s face into the ground and stealing that damned flag.

Buzz. Buzz. Africa by Toto began to filter out from his phone loudly, where it buzzed in his hand.
“Shit, shit”
, Zahi quickly fumbled with his things, before propping their phone up on the vanity and clicking accept.
“— No, no, I told you she needs to be fed dry kibble only, Kiwi’s got an upset stomach today and, oh — Zahi! Hi sweetheart!”

Zahi couldn’t help but smile as their Dad’s frazzled face filled the screen, waving at the camera.
“Hi, Dad”
. Ever since they’d started at Elysium, Zahi’s Dad always called at least once a week. He could tell his Dad missed him terribly but was proud to see him learning more about his Mother and his identity.
“How’re things going Z? Good! How’s uh, Valer… Vali—”
Valentino, Dad. And he’s doing fine! I'm doing fine. We have a bonfire this afternoon and then our first event of Capture the Flag”
, Zahi replied as he began to put his makeup up, scooting back his chair to put on his shoes.

“Capture the Flag! I remember my recreational dodgeball team in college… God, never should’ve signed up for that. Oh uh, do they let you use your… powers for those things? Zahi, darling they’re supervising it, right? It’s… Safe?”
Their father was always concerned about every possible scenario in which Zahi could get hurt, but after coming to Elysium you learn that getting hurt is the least of your worries. Zahi already knew he was coming back tonight littered with bruises and maybe a few good hits, but— was he going to tell his Dad that? Absolutely not.

“Very safe Dad, they have the professors overseeing everything. Don’t worry, besides you know I can hold my own”
, Zahi tutted with a click of his tongue as he finished lacing up his shoe, gaze flicking back up to his phone to catch his Dad’s fond grin.
“Of course, sweetheart. Just like your mom”
. A pleasant warmth settled through his chest at that comment, before realizing the time in the top corner of the screen.
“Dad, I’m gonna be late. I’ll text you tonight after we’re finished okay?”
Zahi stood up, grabbing his phone as he made his way out of the dorm and down the hall.
“Of course! Sorry! I love you! Go kick uh, kick some er butt!”

Zahi snorted at his Dad’s language but blew a kiss at the screen nonetheless.
“Yes Dad, I’ll kick lots of ass tonight. Love ya!”
They didn’t allow their Dad the chance to comment on their language before he ended the call and picked up the pace, heading towards the bonfire where he could already see a congregation of students gathering.

It didn’t take long for Zahi to spot the fluffy white wings and cute tracksuit that he’d picked out earlier this day. His strides were long (his steps practically two in one) as he made a beeline for Val, weaving through the crowd of demigods. Once he was close enough, Zahi dipped down from behind Val to wrap his arms around the other’s neck in a proper hug, laughter bubbling up from his throat. (He expertly avoided the wings and quiver considering how many times he’d launched himself at Val’s back).
“There’s my favorite birdbrain!”
Zahi turned his face to press a smacking kiss against Valentino’s cheek, before finally detaching himself to plop down next to him on the log.

“Hey babes, you miss me?”
Zahi nudged Val’s side gently, hoping to ease the tenseness that had collected in his best friend's shoulders from being in such a loud environment.
“You look lovely as ever by the way, whoever told you to wear that obviously has fucking fan-tas-tic taste”
, They enunciated the word with a click of their tongue and a cheeky smile. Zahi’s smile faltered however as a thought crossed his mind, a sour pout replacing the grin.
“Can you believe they stuck us on different teams this year? Utter bullshit. And I’m paired with Miss Bad Attitude
.

Zahi propped his chin up on an arm as his gaze flicked throughout the demigods amongst them, brow raising at a particularly interesting scene in front of them.
“Oh gods, is that what I think it is? Is Manfred Cassini going in for the kill, literally? With Tempest? I can’t tell if he’s stupid or downright brave— might want to get an arrow ready in case shit goes south”
.

kamran al-hassim.

    Edgy, Reluctant

"Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present."
Ever since he could remember, Kamran always dreaded the unknown. The fact that he always knew things that others wouldn't or shouldn't know may have contributed to it. Keeping his own counsel became Kamran's fatal flaw as a result of this. He never revealed what he knew, and despite numerous attempts to deceive himself, he secretly enjoyed the sensation. Therefore, he was, as usual, uninterested in this year's annual Capture the Flag competition. However, the universe always seemed to remind him, at the appropriate time, that anything can happen, and perhaps that gut feeling he had been having for the past few days was actually trying to tell him something. He despised the way his mind would occasionally go so far and wished he had a switch for his head, but it was unavoidable; he was now a nervous wreck since he had no idea what the future held.

Kinda pathetic isn't it? But he was more concerned by Thoth's reticence. The talkative god was constantly attempting to convince him not to do anything foolish. Yet he was quite worried by the fact that he was silent and unobservable today. Kamran was attempting to meditate in his room while seated in the nirvana position, but before he realized it, darkness had fallen and the start of the games was drawing closer. Normally, Kamran would have stayed away from the bonfire since he didn't like the looks his classmates gave him, but how could he blame them when the gods frequently pushes the right bottoms and it irritates the heck out of him. He sometimes wished Ra could just take away his ability to hear.

Noting the hours passing faster than he anticipated, he got up from the floor and made his way over to his closet. Revealing a wide array of clothes...made out of plants. This could appear quite strange to the average person or demigod, but Egyptian magic practitioners, like him, take a variety of steps to assure the efficacy of their spells. This includes wearing clothing manufactured from plants (such as cotton) rather than animals because it may interfere with their magic. If a magician is strong enough, they may occasionally be able to wear a tiny bit of animal products, but Kamran became accustomed to wearing cloth, hemp, or ramie.

Picking up his hunter-green jacket from his racquet and stuffing it in his enchanted satchel, which also included many of his regular accessories, he quickly added a pair of jeans, a plain cloth linen shirt, and non-leather shoes to complete the ensembled outfit that day. Some medicinal supplies he has in his satchel include the dreaded Bindings of Anubis, which Kamran could cast but later discovered could also be used as a medical component, apothecary jars filled with the Waters of Nun and the Sutures of Imhotep. Kamran was prepared with both his Khopesh and the magnificent Spear of Horus. He left his room and went over to the Bonfire, strapping the Khopesh to his waist and magically condensing the Spear of Horus into a scepter-like shaft, hanging it on his back. He noticed a recognizable face emerge from a room door as he was walking down the hallway of the Iatros Dorm. When he realized it was Montrell, he made the decision to approach them and start a conversation. It is indeed a challenge for Kamran, though I don't want to make it sound that way.

"Hey, I don't know if you remember me but I'm Kamran, the Senior who lives a couple of doors away from you. Are you heading over to the Bonfire too? If you won't mind if I join you, but it's totally okay if you don't want to join me, I wouldn't want to join me either haha...ha..ha, that sounded less pathetic in my head." He mumbled the last part and scratched behind his head as he gave a forced smile that was starting to hurt his face now. He wasn't much for friendly conversations, he was much more used to the harsher side that usually comes out when he's being provoked and genuinely, he's trying to get some allies before he leaves school, as this is his last year after all.

Although he thought Montrell was a nice guy and liked his energy, he is confident that Montrell won't feel the same way about him. Most of the time, Kamran is a miserable person who frequently locks himself in his room when he doesn't have lessons. Knowing Montrell genuinely doesn't like him, he feels pity anytime the latter actively attempt to engage in conversation with him out of kindness. Although it stings, he has grown accustomed to it and doesn't pass up the opportunity to say a friendly hello now and then. Call him desperate, but he's trying to at least win over one individual who doesn't utterly despise him. Thoth always offered him a glimmer of hope to try again, even if he frequently gave up on people. He is not a people-pleaser, but he makes an effort. Speaking of Thoth, where the hell is that bird-headed nerd?

Lilith Marin hadn’t expected anything this…hazardous at the start of the year. No, not at all. A few awkward introductions, a couple of wrong turns maybe, but a full-on battle?

Lilith took a deep breath in, sprawled across her mattress as panic grasped her mind. It was her first year at Elysium Academy and she was expected to participate in Capture the Flag where she had to fight monsters. The thought made her shudder, willingly fighting something that could easily kill her and actively trying to do just that? That wasn’t for her, she didn’t have a death wish. Not to mention, her powers, something she thought of as more than a curse, something she had no control over. She would simply be a liability to her team at this point.

Grimacing, she pushed herself up to a sitting position. She had to attend the games, whether she liked it or not albeit Lilith wished she could just hide in her room until they were over. Her feet gingerly touched the wooden floor boards of her room as she crouched down, rummaging through her luggage, needing something versatile enough to fight in (though she doubted she would do much of that), eventually donning a pair of cargo pants accompanied by a well-worn fleece.

Tucking her hands into the pockets of her fleece in an attempt to hide their shaking, Lilith reassured herself that there was a bonfire before the game and that she would have an hour to prepare. Besides, who knew? Maybe Capture the Flag would be fun. She couldn’t be the only one with no idea what she was doing either. Intrigue pushed her away from her dorm towards the bonfire. It would be one of her first glimpses of the pupils of the academy and she had to admit she was curious.

Walking across the unfamiliar grounds towards where clusters of students were gathered around what she assumed to be a bonfire, she lingered around the edges, underneath a clump of trees. Gaze wandering around the cheerful atmosphere and the scenery, she felt awkward as a stranger in the middle of bonds that have already solidified throughout years.
