(PRETEND I ACTUALLY HAVE A POST LAYOUT LIKE BEFORE THE UPDATE)

A whine filled the forest, breaking the previously peaceful silence. "When're we there~!?" Victoria cried in desperation. Roughly two hours had passed since the group had departed from their resting point - the sun barely touching the horizon. Leo, Saiban, and Aydar still had a relatively large amount of stamina within them, while Victoria was quite the contrary. Her legs felt as though they could snap any second, her eyes were left half-open, and her took on a slumped position as she walked with the rest. The three ignored her, unlike the fifty previous times this question had been asked. The four moved their heads from place to place, recognizing the area and terrain - they were close.

Victoria knew this very well, however she kept pushing the question. She couldn't take this anymore. The long walks, the dirt roads, the scary animals...travel was terrible in her perspective. "Guys, I asked you a question!" Victoria huffed, rage boiling with each second passing. The sound of the group's footsteps were soon replaced by her loud stomping with the violent snap of a twig every few seconds. Aydar sighed tiredly, all his energy quickly sucked by the black hole which was Victoria's anger.

"We're nearly there. Wait a few seconds will you?" Aydar replied, breaking character due to how fed-up he had become.

"Hmph. Fine."

The three soon stopped in front of a lone building standing adamantly at the end of the road. It was mostly composed of stone, bearing similarities to most buildings within Zetia: it stood roughly at roughly thirty feet, with the walling being stone, while the roof being made of wood. A chimney puffed out black smoke, producing a light smell of ash, and the building's outline was illuminated by the setting sun. Victoria sighed in relief at the sight, with Aydar following soon. They spent little time idling, with Victoria dashing towards the building to forcefully pull the door open.

Within the headquarters of Runningsong, it was rather expansive. Everything was taken underground, and the only proper description it could be given is an "underground mansion". The four kept walking. Answering to the greetings of a few, while ignoring the greetings of the many. They navigated through corridor after corridor, stairway through stairway, until they stopped in front of one, single wooden door. Aydar took the lead, bring his hand upwards before giving three firm knocks. "Come in!" a voice responded rather hastily, the creek of a chair being heard from within. Aydar opened the door, to reveal...the guildmaster.

He was a man of a firm stature, standing at roughly 5'9" with a youthful yet wise aura surrounding him. The guildmaster was in a casual tunic - an outfit he wears roughly once a month. He tapped on his desk rather impatiently, almost as if he was in a rush. "I'm guessing you four finished the last contract?"

"Well~... We finished the mission without a hitch," Victoria smiled, with a hidden ounce of hesitation within the facial expression. The guildmaster paid no attention to the hesitation, much rather focused on the words themselves. He gave a simple nod, resting on his chair once again.

Knock knock knock.

Victoria swung around rather quickly, disgruntled by the sudden bangs. "Come in!" the guildmaster repeated, only this time to the strangers outside. In the matter of seconds, five men clad with armor came rushing into the room, surrounding the four mercenaries.

"Leopold Nestor, Saiban Elle, Aydar Walker and Victoria Archer. You four are now placed under arrest by the nation of Zetia for suspected espionage in relation to Ise. Refusing, would only make things worse," a guard stated rather smugly, almost as if he was having the time of his life.

"W-What!?" Victoria turned around to the guildmaster while Aydar stayed rather shocked. "C'mon you can throw money at them to stop right!?"

@monopoisoner

(Welp. Everything just went from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds .-.)

Saiban and Leo indulged the young mage's whining, their patience a result of both years and natural disposition. They kept quiet however; though they were used to the trek, they were tired. If not physically, then mentally. Saiban's nerves felt frayed, though she kept a pleasant enough tone the first twenty times Victoria asked her question. Afterwards she refrained from saying anything, fearing she'd snap at her.

She'd been ordered to help Aydar learn the ropes of the more...  delicate missions they were tasked. Leopold and Victoria were ill-suited for it, and instead had wound up with a different sort of mission in the same town. Despite that, they both finished within a day of each other, and had decided to travel back together at Leo's insistence. The woman wouldn't put it past him to have done it on purpose, so he could have some relief from their resident princess. And quite frankly, who could blame him?

The relief she felt at their arrival was both from getting home as well as letting the young mage run free, without worry if they were being attacked. They continued inside, Saiban and Leopold greeting the old-timers with genuine affection as they raised a mug as if to say "welcome home and good job!" The alchemist laughed at someone's baudy joke, the teller's face as red as Zetia's flag. The sense of family both felt was a good reason as to why they stayed, despite their leader's strong dislike of them.

The newcomer opened the door and the four stepped inside and instantly, Saiban felt something amiss. Leopold and the rest remained oblivious, but she didn't, purple eyes studying the guildmaster with wariness. He was antsy, as if eager to get their business overwith. Usually he first said something about the payment, without care if their job was done properly or not.

The knock on his door had her on high alert, and almost immediately her suspicions proved true.

She could only snort in derision at both Victoria's naivety and the guildmaster's betrayal. "Victoria, sweetheart," The endearment was affectionate, but her tone was anything but. An unsaid threat hung in the air as Saiban's eyes met the guildmaster's. Whatever she saw there was enough to make her decision for her. "He's the one who sold us out. How else would they have gotten in?"

Leopold's face remained carefully impassive, as if a merchant trying to deliberate between which wares to buy. He was doing something akin to it, choosing between what mode of action would let them escape with both their life and freedom.

Saiban and Leopold arrived at the same conclusion. Though the woman would have rather used her small knife on the guildmaster's face, she knew that he had a protective charm over his little throne. Even if he was a greedy ass, he was a powerful mage with a long reach. She had no doubt that he'd used his magic to cloak the soldiers' presence until now.

Instead, she went for the next best thing. She drew her knife and threw in one smooth movement, too fast for any to react. She'd aimed right for one of the few parts of the soldier that were exposed, his smug face morphing into one of pain. Purple hair swooshed as she dodged a fire ball. As expected, Zetia's soldiers were versed in both magic and weaponry. They also had better aim than Victoria, but that was beside the point at the moment.

Leopold, in that brief moment of distraction, threw a smoke bomb at the feet of their opposition, veiling their escape. "Quickly, Aydar, Victoria, time to run." Leopold knew this place like the back of his hand; he resisted the obvious route of going straight up and instead bolted in a different direction, knowing there was more than one entrance to Runningsong's keep.

They could hear the muttered shouts and curses, the sounds of shock and surprise as the guild members saw the soldiers, but they continued to slink in the shadows, careful not to be seen. They didn't know how many of their members were aware of their leaders' machinations and in league with him. Finally, they arrived at the kitchen, devoid of people as the rest had gone out to see what the commotion was about.

"Up the stairs; the door should open to a cave system and we can lose them there." He wasn't about to mention that he wasn't sure he had the map on him. They'd cross that bridge when they got there. First they had to lose their pursuers.

Victoria kept sputtering various nonsense, seemingly the only action that restrained herself from a rage-induced fit. If they were not Victoria's vain attempts to force pity upon the guildmaster, they were statements relating to "I can't believe you would do this!" and "I trusted you!" Beside her, Saiban's calm disposition merely heightened a gradually increasing rage meter; any words that have been spoken to Victoria in a soothing tone only seemed to disgruntle her further when she feels any emotion relating to anger.

Aydar, unlike the rest thought deeply of this situation and everything that had led to this moment. He questioned why he had not left when he received his first payment, and why he idly trusted an obviously untrustworthy man. Hearing the idle chatter of his many comrades during his employment, Aydar should have considered such a situation to take place. Though...he expected the man to have some amount of honor. An amount that would not involve putting all of one's subordinates in irons for the rest of their lives. With these thoughts rushing into his head, Aydar gave the guildmaster some sort of death stare. It had no effect, as the strength of his intimidation was lost in the crowd of guards surrounding the four of them. In spite of this, Aydar continued this relatively useless action. He merely wanted any chance to attack the man. Though in their current predicament, Aydar's only option was to surrender.

"Hrk!"

A guard's sudden death brought the attention of the rest, creating an abundance of escape time for the group. In Aydar's case, it was the perfect moment to strike. He shoved the guard in front of him aside and drew his blade. "I'll gut you!" he yelled, charging at the man. Aydar thought he had him at a disadvantage: the guildmaster was surprised, he had no protection, and most of all, he scarcely had any time to react. With all these factors Aydar was nearly guaranteed a success. He saw no flaws, and he fully believed he could end this.

His blade banged mid-swing on an invisible barrier, creating a distinct cracking noise. For a moment Aydar's eyes widened, unsure of what had just happened. For another moment, he was repelled straight onto the ground. "Aydar!" Victoria shouted. Even Victoria understood a direct attack on the guildmaster was a fool's move; his charm was something he keeps in his possession at all times.

Split-second events kept occurring. Before any of the guards had even registered Aydar's fall, a smoke bomb was thrown onto the ground, temporarily blinding anyone within the room. The four of them took this as an opportunity to run. Everyone but Aydar had a relatively simple way of exiting the room: shoving the nearest guard in proximity over, and bolting. Aydar had a few more hurdles to jump over. He quickly got onto his feet, something the guards heard, but had not seen. One took a blind slice into the air, creating a cut one centimeter deep and five centimeters wide on Aydar's left upper arm. He winced slightly, letting the adrenaline mask the rest of the pain. Aydar merely opted to ignore the rest of the guards, dropping his sword and dashing alongside his comrades.

The three were a sizeable distance from Aydar by the time he was out of the room, though with time, he caught up with the group. His breaths grew heavy, fueled only by his sharp decline in stamina. He gripped onto his wound tightly, more out of instinct rather than as a medical benefit. Even if he had not seen anyone else from the guild, Aydar could still hear their screams. Some were cries of death, while others were cries of disbelief. Despite his urge to assist anyone in a worse situation than himself, this was a moment where thoughts of self-preservation were the only viable ones, forcing Aydar to stay his hand.

They very soon approached the kitchen where Leo gave further instructions on their next moves. Victoria and Aydar gave an affirmative nod, with Victoria adding a "Right!"

Victoria was the first to rush upstairs. She dashed towards the door, opening it fully before continuing her sprint. Stopping only for a few short moments, Victoria examined her surroundings. Leo had not been wrong, in front of her, a full cave system was shown. "Leo, are you sure guards haven't discovered this place already!? I mean, the guildmaster would give them all entry points right!?"

"It doesn't matter. If we took anywhere else it would've been swarmed by twice the guards," Aydar responded gruffly, jogging past Victoria.

"W-Well...okay then!" Victoria drew her grimoire and continued to follow them deep into the cave.

Leo laughs, the sound echoing in the silence of  the cave. Despite the carefree sound, he is anything but.  "Actually, Victoria is right." Though he didn't look back, he knew his answer had given their resident mage a cause for concern. Instead he continued leading the path, looking for that break he knew would come. He'd been through enough times to know a few of the system's secrets.

"But this is a cave system..." He turns right, into a hall that is barely visible due to its darkness. Behind them, the lights of magical torches continued to burn on the path they once were.  The alchemist reaches into his pocket, brings out two vials and hands one to Victoria. "Give it a good shake." As if to demonstrate, he tapped his own a few times against his leg. A soft blue light began to emanate from the glass.

Saiban paused, letting the two younger members of their party stay between her and Leopold. Lavender eyes would continuously inspect the darkness, searching for trouble, before going back to the three in front of her to make sure they were alright. When Victoria lit the small vial, she frowned at the tight grip Aydar had on his upper left arm.

"Leo, slow down. Victoria, shine the light on his arm." She moved swiftly; wounds on the field were not to be taken lightly. If you had a chance to tend to them, you took it without question. She pried Aydar's fingers off, and inspected the wound in the meager light. With a sigh of relief, she let him go. She reached into her own pockets, and brought out a small bottle that held some salve.

"Is there trouble, Saiban?"

"No, nothing too serious." She handed the salve to Aydar. "Just apply it to the wound, and it should be better before the better part of an hour."

"That's good to know. Now where was I," Leopold marched on, climbing over fallen debris and questionable bones as they trudged deeper into the cave. "Undoubtedly, the main exit we use  for this cave would've been heavily guarded."

"I hear a but coming."

"But... there are actually several exits to the cave."

This, she didn't know about. And that was strange considering the length of time she'd spent at the guild. Then again, she would've never expected the guildmaster to betray them like that. "So why haven't we decided to use them? I always heard it was a bunch of deadends."

"Ah, a lot of them are. But there's one good reason why."

With a sigh, Saiban rolled her eyes at the alchemist's dramatic pause. "I know you enjoy the entire smart charade, Leopold, but I'd rather we get to open sky faster."

"Fine. It's because much of the cave is still largely inhabited."

That caught her attention.

"Inhabited?"

"By monsters, of course."

face was one of minor distaste, he would have preferred if everyone had ignored his wound

altogether. Saiban examined his wound, her eyes darting up and down the cut. Her hand soon let go

"Thanks," he mumbled slowly, grabbing the salve and applying three drops towards his arm.  Aydar

winced inaudibly, the sharp sting of the medicine sending chills throughout his body.

By the time Aydar looked upwards, the group had already moved forward without him. He jogged

towards the rest, picking up more and more of Saiban and Leo's conversation. He gave little care to

their words - he only wanted to find the exit to this dreaded cave. Victoria on the other hand seemed

Her ears perked and her eyes widened slightly towards the two. Victoria became a silent observer,

Victoria injected herself into the conversation.

"Monsters!? Leo that's even worse than soldiers!" Victoria exclaimed, tiny amounts of anger and

Her steps began to slow and she began to take on more of a slumped position, her body moving

inwards towards her grimoire. She began to grow anxious as each minute passed, her head

shooting in all directions.

"Victoria, you do realize Leo could be joking, right?" Aydar sighed lightly. He understood that

Leo's words were likely true, though Aydar hoped his words would soothe her troubled mind. Aydar

simply heard a light huff in response and the two continued on.

A minute had past and there was a certain level of uneasiness that had befallen the group. The air

was thick to a point where one could practically see it and it had stenched heavily of rotten meat.

The light seemed to be quite bright, signifying a potential exit point. This light however gave no clue

to what else lies ahead. The group continued forward, before turning in a sharp 90 degree angle to

the left - the direction of the light. There, the group had found the source for their uneasiness.

“Shhh!”

seemed to be an exit.

“Just be quiet, and everything will be fine,” Aydar whispered the rest, turning towards them.

“Mhm! Got it.” Victoria nodded, her tone only slightly lighter than her previous one. In front of

Victoria’s heart raced as she saw two little eyes beating towards her. The bear opened its mouth,
