  • Holden Spellbreaker

Holden has spent many years being an asset of those in power, and is now determined to die as an ally to the powerless.

Born with a vanishingly rare mutation, Holden's soul is a ravenous sorcerous predator, a wolf snapping and snarling at the threads of magic in the world around him. His ability to shred the spells cast by magi made him incredibly valuable to the Inquisition, and as a boy, he was lifted out of poverty, wrapped in armour, given the pen and the rifle, and told to help make the world safer. Nearly twenty years later, he turns and snarls to his former masters, "Safer for who?" His homeland is dominated by the Stormlords of the Spires, while the farmers and peasants toil to provide their food, fabrics, leathers, metals, all of the things which make lives of power and comfort possible.

Two years ago, Holden broke away from the Inquisition, resigned his commission, and bought a printing press. He's a sharpshooter, a swordsman, a bonny brawler and a soldier, but his weapon now is the printed word, as he writes savage polemics and calls for an end to the exploitation of the poor. The uprising of 162 filled him with hope. Now, it is time to press the political edge.

Holden is not without allies. He has supporters in the form of mortal craftsmen and merchants, men and women who distribute his pamphlets. He has written to the Infernal Houses of Lezek and Djuke, appealing to pride, courage, and the determination for freedom, asking for his cause to be known, for his words to spread on Infernal tongues.

He's not a fool. He expects to die doing this. He only wants to make things better before he goes.

If one reads his pamphlets, his position is clear. Holden is not actually demanding the destruction of the Spires, or for magi to be made subjects to village councils, as his opponents caricature. He wants an end to the ruthless exploitation of the peasants. He demands fair prices for the produce of the Stormlands, and lower rents for the workers, as well as more bargaining power for towns of mortals, that they can resist being levied to the service of the Stormlords.

Holden is acutely aware that his nation is ruled by the Spires, and that without the focused power of the Stormlords, the territory would be far less habitable and fruitful than it is. He asks only that the rulers remember where they came from. His call is for the Stormlords to allow the people of the Stormlands to stand behind them and beside them, rather than beneath them.

Holden is wiry, of average height. His hair is extremely pale straw-blond, and his cheeks and knuckles are flecked with gunpower scars. He's an extremely animated man, who seemingly cannot speak with gesticulating wildly, and tends to pace. He's very honest, and sometimes struggles to control his temper.

On exposure to an active source of magic, he slows, and becomes cold, calm. His ability to shatter magic and seemingly devour the shards leaves him breathing sharply afterward. Several magi have stood at a distance and observed him doing this, and afterwards have apparently wanted nothing more than to avoid his company.
