PHOENIX MONTERO is a TWENTY-TWO YEAR OLD college dropout with a complicated history. He's a CISGENDER MAN and uses HE/HIM pronouns, despite having experienced periods of genderfluidity in the past. He was born on NOVEMBER 23, making him a SAGITTARIUS. Phoenix is often described as CONFIDENT and PASSIONATE. However, his ECCENTRIC NATURE and LACK OF IMPULSE CONTROL make it difficult for most people to stick around. He is OPTIMISTIC but PAINFULLY IMPATIENT, and wants everything to happen immediately--if it doesn't, he becomes irritable. He is FLIPPANT and CASUAL, and rarely seems to care about the consequences of his actions, which regularly gets him into more trouble than it's worth.
Phoenix identifies as BISEXUAL and is comfortable with his sexuality, but because of his COMMITMENT ISSUES, he finds it extremely hard to form meaningful relationships with others. However, he CRUSHES EASILY and has a nasty habit of HANGING ON TO OLD FLAMES.
Regardless, Phoenix is DEDICATED TO THE CAUSE, and has been interested in ghosts and the paranormal since he was a child thanks to several UNUSUAL EXPERIENCES. He's obsessed with GHOST HUNTING, URBEXING, and PARAPSYCHOLOGY.

Phoenix is a solid 5'10" with an average build, weighing around one hundred and fifty-eight pounds. His hair is a perpetually bleached blond mess, with darker roots--enough to expose the fact that it's actually dark brown. Either way, it's still surprisingly soft despite the constant bleaching. His eyes are an equally dark brown, framed with thick, arching eyebrows and short eyelashes. His complexion on the other hand is fair but warm, and obnoxiously clear despite his usually messy appearance. Freckles are smattered across his cheeks and shoulders. He also has several small scars littering his arms and legs, mostly from accidents and one too many close encounters. He dresses for comfort over fashion, and a lot of his clothes are extremely basic. Both of his ears are pierced, and he has a handful of small tattoos--mostly done himself.

Phoenix is a difficult person to handle, plain and simple. He's eccentric and loud and passionate to the point of obsession. Although he is a genuinely nice person, he can overwhelm others with his aggressive vibrancy and has the tendency to flip-flop rapidly from one extreme to the other--in turns joyful and devastated, with seemingly very little reason. It is obvious that Phoenix needs some sort of intervention given his complete lack of self-restraint, but he actively refuses help and gets irate when the subject's brought to light. His borderline obsessive behaviors often lead to fits of histrionic jealousy, making it hard to form a genuine connection with him. His close friends are likely the only people who can truly deal with him and his antics. Still, Phoenix is ridiculously spontaneous and hard to pin down. His fear of commitment stretches further than just relationships and has made it near-impossible for him to pursue a hobby or career outside of paranormal investigation, considering it's the only thing that's managed to keep his interest for more than a few months.

Erratic tendencies aside, Phoenix is still a good person at his core. He's friendly (for the most part) and open-minded, presenting himself as an extremely tolerant person. He embraces nonconformity and is incredibly intuitive. As a result, he's also very encouraging and lacks a scrutinizing sense of judgement. Regardless of how he comes off, Phoenix is actually cunning and quick-witted, something most people wouldn't be willing to give him credit for. However, his confidence always weighs out, and when paired with his blinding optimism, he's definitely a fun person to hang around. Loyalty is also something that comes naturally to Phoenix. He is incredibly devoted to those closest to him. That being said, he cares about his friends deeply and would never do anything to intentionally hurt them, although his antics sometimes pose a threat to this.

Born in Lorest, Arizona to a single mother who was only nineteen at the time, it's safe to say that Phoenix's life has never been clean-cut or simple. Despite his mother loving him dearly, her inability to settle down and commit to anything--a trait she obviously passed down to her son--got the best of her when Phoenix was only three months old. This initially led her to leave Phoenix in the care of his aunt, an older woman who owned a ranch in northern Oregon. Although the original plan was to leave Phoenix with his aunt for only a few short weeks, this quickly fell through on account of his mother's inconsistency. Weeks turned into months, and eventually his aunt was able to gain custody of Phoenix despite his mother's promises to make a reappearance--something that has never happened in his twenty-two years on Earth.
Regardless, Phoenix's aunt was diligent about raising him. Phoenix grew up in a happy home environment, and his aunt has always been a supportive figure in his life, so his mother's absence never ate at him much. It helps that he didn't even know about her until he turned eighteen, when his aunt finally felt like she was obligated to tell him the truth. However, this didn't leave much of an impression on Phoenix, and he still has no interest in finding his mother or even reaching out to her.
His childhood however came with challenges. Growing up, Phoenix was regularly ostracized from his peers on account of his odd behavior and had very few friends up until middle school, when he finally started to settle down behavior-wise. His interest in the paranormal however did very little to aid in his attempts at fitting in with his classmates.
Still, this budding obsession stemmed from plausible cause, and Phoenix still adamantly swears by the ghostly encounters he experienced as a child. When he was roughly five years old, he began to notice how... strange his aunt's house was. It was a lone ranch home, built nearly one hundred years ago in the midst of thick forests and vast mountain ranges. The fact that it was so isolated--nearly twenty-five minutes from Withermoor--only made it more eerie. As a result, Phoenix was often left to his own devices as a child. The first ghost he met however, the one that inhabited his aunt's home, was a friendly one. It took care of him: moving his toys around the house for him to find... turning on the nightlight when his aunt forgot to... little things like that. Naturally though, his aunt never believed his "outlandish" stories, simply assuming that Phoenix had developed an imaginary friend like most children his age.
From then on, Phoenix became more perceptive of the world around him--always looking out for the strange and unusual, even if he was rarely taken seriously throughout childhood. In middle school, his interest in ghosts moved to online forums and directories, where he was able to dig deeper and research without fear of rejection. His fascination with ghosts eventually bled into cryptozoology, alien activities, conspiracy theories, and the paranormal in general, and by the time he hit high school, he began urbexing to get his fix. This included trespassing and exploring (mostly) abandoned buildings that were rarely suitable for investigation. Phoenix quickly became an expert in hopping fences and picking locks to avoid the inevitable consequences of being caught.
Throughout high school, he developed several strong friendships--real friendships--and even his antics remained, it helped ease some of his behavioral problems. He started focusing on his studies more and actually showing up to class, falling into a pattern of semi-consistency.
After graduation, Phoenix attempted college, moving halfway across the country in order to pursue a degree he was barely interested in. Obviously, this didn't last long, and within a month, he'd already dropped out. For the next year, he delved into a rep sheet of nasty behaviors, constantly bouncing around from person to person and couch-surfing his way through a city he knew nothing about. He ghosted all of his old contacts for over a year, only keeping in touch with his aunt, before deciding to return to Withermoor with ghost hunting in mind.

gabriel lazarus is a twenty-two year old college graduate who majored in mythology and theology, and had plans to go to a seminary after college. he is a cisgender man and uses he/him pronouns. he is an aquarius, being born on the 5th of febuary. most people who meet gabriel think he is a calm and collected young man with a very mellow and laid back approach to life. he holds his religion close to his chest and often only shares his religious views if someone asks. otherwise you wouldn't know. gabriel is quiet and watchful, with a more calculating eye than people give him credit for. he is oftentimes the soothing balm to his best friend’s more eccentric nature. he is constantly 3 or 5 steps ahead of everyone and everything, and gets tense if things fall out of his control.

gabriel is 5'8, shorter than both of his parents, and weighs a solid one hundred and fourty-seven pounds. his hair is a soft wavy dark brown that he keeps nice and neat, and he has a tendency to frown when people mess it up. his eyes are a light carolina blue, with neat if thicker brows and long eyelashes. his eyes have a kind look to them but tend to sharpen when people aren’t looking. his features over all give him a very attractive look, and had given him a little following of girls in college.
he holds no scars, a surprisngly blemish free body despite the numerous accidents he happened in as a child. not a single broken bone or cut has ever marred his body. he does however have a tattoo of the seal of baal, one of the demon kings, on the back of his left thigh.
his clothing style is crisp and contains mostly blacks, whites, maroons and dark greens. slacks and dressshirts with pressed collars. sometimes he wears sweaters but rarely ever wears jeans, despite phoenix trying to make him.
he has a tendency to fix his cuffs and fiddle with the rosary around his wrist when he's nervous. will twitch or frown as if he's listening to something, and can often be caught looking out the corner of his eye.

gabriel is a complex and complicated persona. he is an ambitious person with a more mellow kind of outward appearance, a dedicated and diligent student with a competitive streak to keep him ahead of his peers. he's incredibly private, and oftentimes unless you pick up the cues you'd never know he's as religious as he is. he doesn't like telling people. however, he will answer if you ask. gabriel is rather impulsive and has his own bag of commitment issues to a lesser degree than phoenix's. he's surprisingly stubborn and unyielding, and oftentimes won't come to a compromise. he is as cautious as he is impulsive, often calculating the risks of something as he's doing it just in case he has to back out. he has a underlayer of anxiety and stress that presents itself in a more nitpicky and irritable way, which often makes people annoyed with him. he's aloof and can be quiet temperamental, and over all difficult to deal with. he had a stare that can see your soul and often unnerves people.

the story
his parents met in vegas of all places, like all the cliché stories go. their's was a whirlwind romance, her 31, him 22. they were married by the end of the week. they lived in a small town for a few years, but after 4 years of trying to get preganant and having 5 miscarrages they decided to move across the country. and then suddenly, his mom was pregnant with him, a perfectly healthy baby. he was born without complications and was an angel baby. his father became the preacher in their town, after the family bought a small old country church. life was good, bar a few misshaps and accidents surrounding gabriel.
gabriel grew up with no friends, no one really wanted to talk to the weird preacher boy who talked to himself. he was often called names but eventually bonded with another outcast named phoenix. the two became inseperable which did wonders for them both.
they aged, weird things kept happening around gabriel, but their friendship never changed. when he was 11 his father started teaching him about god and catholosism, which sparked an interest in gabriel. some things were explained and as he grew up gabriel decided he wanted to become a priest, an exorcist.
life went on.
phoenix and him kissed at 12. after a bitten lip and a lot of tears later, they promptly decided to never remember it again. this was about the time when his internalized homophobia started, which developed into its own commitment issues.
highschool came, they made some friends, formed a little club and then suddenly they were graduating. gabriel went off to study mythology and theology, beginning to plan his long life to priesthood, and eventually into becoming an exorcist. phoenix went to a school halfway across the country. they kept in contact, until one day phoenix just stopped. it freaked gabriel out, but after finding out from phoenix's aunt that he was alive gabriel started leaving weekly voicemails. one sided conversations about his week, the new things happening in his life, unstable relationships that never lasted longer than a few weeks, anything his brain could come up with. anything to make it seem like phoenix hadn't left, and gabriel wasn't all alone with his thoughts.
and then phoenix came back, and just like that pieces fell back together.
his plans got put on hold. he finished graduating a year early just to go on this ridiculous ghost hunting thing phoenix felt like doing. because all that mattered was that phoenix was back.
now they're back. back in this town that gabriel knew was crawling with things he didn't want to see. didn't want to uncover.

SELINA MONET WOLFE, or SEL, is a TWENTY-TWO YEAR OLD hailing from a long line of ghost hunters. growing up, there was no pressure on her to go to college, so she gladly skipped that step—she prefers street smarts and common sense to anything that could be learned from books at a desk. she’s a CISFEMALE and uses SHE/HER pronouns. because of her AUGUST 13TH birthday, sel’s zodiac sign is a LEO. true to this theme, she is a DRIVEN, NATURAL-BORN LEADER who isn’t afraid to take control when the going gets tough. this isn’t to be mistaken for arrogance, though; as much confidence as selina has in her decisions, she KNOWS WHEN TO TAKE THE BACKSEAT AND LET SOMEONE ELSE LEAD. to strangers, she might come across as SECRETIVE or MYSTERIOUS, but to those that really know her, she’s actually a quite WARM person. because of her OBSERVANT NATURE, she’s very DETAIL-ORIENTED, often picking up on small things that others might overlook, which makes her a good PROBLEM-SOLVER. this, combined with her CARING, somewhat MATERNAL INSTINCTS and RESOURCEFULNESS means that she’s often cleaning up other people’s messes. this can get tiring, and although sel is known for her LEVEL-HEADEDNESS, she, like anyone else, has her limits. it takes a lot to get her mad, but once she’s to that point, SHE SEES RED. despite her somewhat repressed desire to be SARCASTIC and PETTY in moments like that, she tries not to take her anger out on others, instead choosing to put her energy into something creative. she’s GOOD WITH HER HANDS and dabbles a bit in mechanics—had it not been for the family ghost-hunting business, she might’ve considered pursuing a career in engineering. she loves to figure out how things work, and if she sets her mind to it, there’s nothing that she can’t fix. selina has a DARK SENSE OF HUMOR and can be a bit OVER-PROTECTIVE at times, but she generally means well and tries to be a COOL MOM for her delinquent children.
romantic relationships have never been a big priority in selina’s life, so she hasn’t spent much time thinking about her sexuality—SHE JUST LIKES WHO SHE LIKES, and that’s enough for her. there hasn’t been a long line of people she’s liked in this sense, though, and one of her biggest brags is that she’s NEVER TRULY BEEN IN LOVE or subjected herself to the pains of heartbreak. whether or not it’s true, she likes to believe that she’s somehow stronger because of this.
despite her blatant disregard for college educations, sel does her fair share of learning. rather than books, though, she finds that she has an easier time gaining knowledge through hands-on experiences. she studied the PARANORMAL and the SUPERNATURAL alongside her parents—something she had always been interested in doing—and went with them to investigations whenever it was deemed “safe” enough to do so. because of this, she has a plethora of PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN GHOST-HUNTING to bring to the table. through trial and error, she was also able to teach herself how to successfully WORK ON VEHICLES.

'messy' is an understatement—most days, she neglects to even brush it because she's too preoccupied with keeping her friends out of trouble. she's never been one to worry too much about her appearance, though, so she doesn't mind looking a bit disheveled. her eyes are a pale green, but when the sun hits them just right, flecks of coppery brown can be seen in them as well. above them sit a pair of eyebrows through which most of sel's emotions are conveyed—one can always tell what she's thinking or feeling based on the position of her eyebrows. her complexion is pale, and freckles adorn her nose and cheekbones like little constellations. despite her long history in hunting down the supernatural, selina has somehow managed to avoid getting into any accidents that would have left her with permanent marks on her body. her style could be considered by some to be boring, as she typically chooses to dress more for functionality than for fashion. any piece of clothing with lots of pockets is her best friend, and she has a tendency to wear lots of layers to make it seem like she's sloppy on purpose. most of her wardrobe consists of black, or at the very least, things that she doesn't mind getting dirty—her hands are constantly getting smudged with car oil, and she has a nasty habit of wiping her hands on the nearest surface. she's learned the hard way that that typically means whatever she happens to have on at the time, so she's since quit trying to dress nicely.

although selina has a reputation for being the most level-headed person in her small group of friends, she, like everyone, has her limits. it takes a lot to get her angry, but once she's to that point, it's best to let her be. this is largely due to the fact that she has a nasty habit of bottling up her emotions. she puts the feelings and problems of others ahead of her own, and before she knows it, everything catches up to her. while some people might break down and cry in a time such as that, sel's outbreak of repressed emotions rears back its ugly head in the form of anger. she tries not to take it out on those around her, but she can't help the occasional sarcastic remark. she comes across as mysterious to outsiders, but even though her friends don't know all there is to know about her, they know her better than most. like many of the other residents of withermoor, she has her fair of secrets that are nearly impossible to discover. if one were to ask her about them, she would agree with whatever was said for the sake of seeing their reaction. this sort of falls in line with her dark sense of humor. selina is the type of person to laugh at a funeral, though, why, she couldn't say. despite this, selina can also be fairly uptight, but only about certain things. she doesn't like to half-ass anything she sets her mind to—she's perfectionistic, so any task she takes on will be done thoroughly. she likes to keep organized, too, so that in emergencies, she'll have no problem finding what she needs. her friends mean the world to her, and she would do anything to protect them, but sometimes, she can come across as over-bearing. she never means any harm by this, though—she just wants the best for them, which typically means keeping them alive. call her a killjoy, but selina places a high value on life.

Noemi is 5’7” and relatively slim for her height, weighing in at one hundred and twenty-five pounds. Her hair is thick and curly, reaching past her collarbones in a brunette shroud when it’s not pulled up high in a bun—which it usually is, for she has no patience for making it behave in a place like Withermoor. She’s got clear blue eyes, and bold, slightly arched brows; when she’s anxious, the tails of her eyebrows disappear rapidly, as she’ll end up plucking the hairs out one by one. Her face is otherwise blessedly free of blemishes, though her body is another story; bumps and bruises litter her arms and legs on the daily, and scars from cooking rather basic meals can be found between her fingers, right next to all the ink stains. Her wardrobe consists solely of basic and business-casual pieces in neutral colors. Her closet is practically a sea of beige, black, and white, though there are hints of pink, purple, and blue scattered within. She’s not one to get dressed up very often.

Noemi isn’t the easiest person to get along with. She’s quiet and keeps herself busy—some might even say too busy to form a meaningful relationship with. She doesn’t like to be interrupted or pushed too hard, too fast, and she lashes out swiftly when her boundaries are crossed… or even if the line is toed. She’s fiercely protective of her privacy, and isn’t one to let people in easily. She has her highs and lows throughout the day; she is intensely moody, occasionally to the detriment of her productivity and sense of self. Her fear of rejection and desire for perfection have resulted in an irrepressible insecurity that has been the portent of doom for all of her past friendships. Her father, therapist, and the few old friends she’s gained and subsequently lost have all at some point accused her of being a lousy listener and incapable of communicating properly. She’s too lost in her head, too set in her ways, and too afraid to color outside the lines.

A quick study, and a hard worker; if anything can be said about Noemi, it’s that she gets the job done, and she does it well. Although she’s lacking in emotional intelligence, she’s analytical and creative, and more than capable of filling out a Scantron in five minutes or less. Born and raised in Withermoor, Oregon, Noemi couldn’t remember a time her hair wasn’t a hindrance. Cold winter rains and bone-dry summer heats had never made her curls happy.
Noemi couldn’t remember her mother, either, but that was fine; she had her father and step-mother across the hall, her grandparents just a few doors down, and photos of her mother on the mantle. For a long time, all she knew was this: she looked just like her mother, who had once been very sad, and she was en el cielo, now, though they visited her grave every year as a family. Then, when she got older, she learned this: her mother had driven herself into the lake, and all they’d found the next morning was her waterlogged car and her prayer beads. They’d been visiting an empty grave for over a decade. “No es tu culpa, querida,” her abuelita told her firmly. “Nunca podría ser tu culpa.” But Noemi knew that her mother had been depressed, that she’d passed away when she was just a few months old, and that it all lined up in just the right way—in the way that postpartum depression was only caused by one thing.
Her father was hardly ever home, working as a nurse day and night; her step-mother kept her distance, even in family therapy, afraid to step on any toes. Noemi spent her school days at the library until it closed, then headed home—though not without some reluctance. Plagued by nightmarish guilt and the metaphorical ghost of her mother wailing outside of her window, Noemi used a fleece blanket as a curtain to block out the grasping shadows, and couldn’t fall asleep without music to drown out the cries. She’d wake up with the sun and go to sleep as late as she could manage without being dead on her feet the next morning; the longer her bedroom light was on, the safer she felt at night, from guilt and ghosts alike.
For the most part, she kept to herself in school. She gained a few friends, lost more than that, and graduated high school as valedictorian. She’d had a few plans lined up in her journal: she could have majored in biology, gone to medical school, and became a doctor; or maybe she would’ve majored in political science, gone to law school, and became a lawyer; she could’ve even majored in history, gotten her doctorate, and became a professor one day. Some plans remained unwritten, filed away in the furthest recesses of her mind—like the one where she ditched all of her responsibilities, squatted in a cabin on a mountain far away from the rest of society, and lived happily ever after.
Life hadn’t gone according to any of those plans, but Noemi didn’t mind.
