RYUUNOSUKE SHINOZUKA

 • Age: 40

 • Gender: Male

 • Sexuality: Asexual (demiromantic)

 • Appearance:

Ryuunosuke stands at 6’ with a slender yet toned build that’s always hidden under a business suit. He always wears black gloves and rarely takes them off.

Cybernetic Augmentations:

He has several augmentations that are hidden, making him deceptively seem like a purist. The more obvious augmentation is to his eyes: his eyes are red in color, and allow him to access a specialized personal UI system to access various files and documentation, allowing him to research at will. He is his own informant. It also allows him to access and manipulate his own personal arsenal of handy gadgets and weapons. Ryuu’s optical augments have special security and encryptions that could possibly exceed even the highest of security systems out there. In the case someone does manage to hack into his UI system, it is programed to shut down, allowing him to regain normal human vision and use of his other augmentations manually instead of automatically.

Another augmentation (though this one isn’t noticeable in the least) are several small incisions in his back that act like a spider’s spinnerets for web making. Instead of silk, though, it produces monomolecular wires that he can shoot out, entangle in surrounding areas and ensnare his enemies. The wires are so thin, they are nearly invisible to the naked eye and if one with augmented eyes isn’t careful enough, may be undetectable. The wire itself possesses an extremely high tensile strength (meaning it won’t break easily, yet is very flexible) and can slice through most normal materials (wood, stone, flesh, bone, glass, several kinds of metals with enough force, etc. Reference this article).

The monomolecular wires have another purpose other than to ensnare and slice enemies. They can also be used as sword or whip-like materials. Using his specialized gloves and handles specifically made to attach to ends of wires, he is able to break them and use them as handheld weapons. Each one has a slashing capability, however because of it’s flexibility, it can’t be used as a piercing weapon.

Personality

Ryuu has two sides of his personality: his public persona and his private natural personality. His public personality exudes charisma and charm. He is what could be seen as a true gentleman of a businessman. Being bred for business negotiations, he has the ability to assess situations and read people with relative ease. Those he can’t, he’ll be sure to research more thoroughly than others. He seems to know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. His business tactics change up depending on who he speaks to, making him a perfect chameleon among the business world. To the public, he is rather kind, generous, courteous with a smile that promote an easy mind.

However, just shy of the public eye is the true Ryuu. A serious man void of natural human emotions. Laughter is strategically fabricated. Every cheerful or charming conversation had been carefully practiced and refined over years of taxing training. The real Ryuunosuke is a bitter man with a true cynical outlook on the world. The little enjoyments in life seem pointless to him, and nothing is more important than his work. This is a man that doesn’t know how to relax or to not be a businessman. It’s almost as if he is a biological machine.

Other

Ryuunosuke suffers from phobias involving touching people and objects. He doesn’t feel at ease unless he watches that person or thing become sterile (usually by washing or scrubbing with various kinds of soap and sanitizers). He also takes part in cleaning rituals like counting how many times he scrubs his hands while washing them, counting before he touches a doorknob, checking things, etc. Even though he has all of these, he seems to hide his phobias and rituals very well--to the point where no one can even tell he has these flaws. In front of others, he is very calm and muted. But after people leave is when he will lock himself in his bathroom and fall into a frantic panic.

Background

Shinozuka Industries was one of the few standing megacorporations that stood against the other big names (and the up-and-coming Monarch Solutions). The Shinozuka family name could be heard in many whispers, even in the underground world of the black market. Though most speculations were never confirmed, one could easily assume they had some kind of tie to older generations of Yakuza, Chinese and Italian mafias. The Shinozukas came from old money and invested in cybernetic advancement. Making sure to cover their bases, they also took shares in other corporations and companies that would help build up a versatile reputation. For the longest time, only Monarch Solutions were their prominent competitors.

Ryuunosuke’s destiny was predetermined even before he was born. His name had been planned out before he was conceived and his personality was already set. His education and future career choices were already determined. Even down to the clothes he would wear, how he would style his hair and what he would eat were all set out for him. He might as well have been an experiment rather than a son. And in reality, he was. Ryuunosuke didn’t have a childhood. From the time he could comprehend, he was taught what it meant to be the perfect businessman. What were meant to be preschool playdates were replaced with him sitting in a corporate office, listening in to negotiations. His writing was taught through copying legal documents. Schooling was learned through the top educators paid to teach him from home. He never was allowed to touch video games. Online was restricted to researching corporate competition and possible companies to absorb. It was a boring and empty life.

There was no affection between Ryuu and his parents. His mother was mostly out of the picture, always hidden behind a translucent screen and never in arm’s reach. His father was the farthest from caring as a man could get, and the only praise Ryuu ever got was when he succeeded in his training. There were no hugs, not even smiles from his parents or his home staff.

By ten, Ryuu’s training started to change. Not only was his mind honed, he was to train with top fitness instructors to keep a healthy body. Top musicians came to teach him the art of music (in which Ryuu became very proficient in playing stringed instruments like koto and shamisen, even guitar). They were conditioning him to be a well rounded man. A perfect businessman.

Ryuu had no time for a rebellious stage. By his teen years, he did have bouts of hopeless depression that hindered his learning, but he was always snapped right back, being told he wasn’t allowed to show such weakness. The more and more he grew, the less and less human he felt. By his early twenties, he was given an opportunity to attend one of the top technical universities.

It was the first time Ryuunosuke Shinozuka had made any kind of friends.

And his last.

He had met a girl. Young, beautiful, and completely out of his league. But she was humble, and he enjoyed her genuine happiness. It was the first time Ryuu felt the need to rebel against his father, and against the corporation. He started to dodge the drivers that would take him back home, just so that he could spend more time with the girl. And being someone that had no love in his childhood, he was one to easily fall in love. One day, he had asked the girl to elope with him. However, that day never came.

News reports say that there had been a terrible accident where a few university students were severely injured. One died, and two suffered severe injuries. It took quite a bit of recoding and security to hide the secret that the girl Ryuu had fallen for was, for better words, taken off the radar, and Ryuu had attempted suicide after hearing about it. After being revived, he fell into a deep pit of depression, feeling completely and utterly trapped in his destiny.

Fastfordward several years, Ryuu had decided to accept his fate. For whatever reason he didn’t understand, he felt that he was never meant to be human. It was only enforced when he was forced to get augmentations. The stress and strain of it all left an impact on his mind, making him hate the world he existed in. Everything about the world was filthy. Tainted. Disgusting. Over time, Ryuu started to develop phobias of the world around him. Gloves remained on his hands. He would actively avoid touching people or things. Even things such as eating meals became paranoia-filled tasks. But no matter what personal strife he was going through, he continued to succeed in becoming the perfect businessman.

Seven years ago, Ryuu’s father passed away and the mantle of Shinozuka Industries owner and CEO fell on his shoulders. Since then, the corporation skyrocketed in productivity. With nothing else to live for, Ryuu simply strove to reach the top, only so that he could watch the world burn in the end.

His greatest recent achievement was the signing of the merger of Shinozuka Industries and Monarch Solutions. Though both corporations would hold their original names, Ryuu would become CEO of both of them. Any and all secrets of Monarch would now be under Shinozuka control. But with this great inherited power also comes great inherited enemies.

Emery Benson

 • Alias: Shadow (always confused for Runner)

 • Age: 30

 • Gender: Male

 • Sexuality: Pansexual

 • Occupation: Errand Runner

 • Appearance:

Emery stands at 5'10", slightly broad shouldered with a muscular build. He has light scars all over his body, but most visible around his wrists. Along the veins in his arms and legs, he has embedded LED lighting that lights up when his other cybernetic enhancements are active.

One augmentation is to Emery's skeletal frame. It is reinforced with a metallic alloy that allows him to be much more durable yet lightweight enough to keep his mobility. However, weight was added onto his frame as his muscular system was reinforced with a strong synthetic material that allowed him to exceed his human limitations without any damage. This also allows him to be much stronger than the average man his build. His body under his skin might as well be a robotic skeleton and casing.

The second augmentation is connected to the LED lighting in his veins. This augmentation acts as something similar to overclocking a computer, where Emery can exceed all of his human limitation (his senses, reflexes, speed, strength, endurance and durability). It is connected to an internal system which he can access through a panel in his left forearm. Overclocking, of course, comes with it's own drawbacks. Using the overclock for too long will result in errors and potentially overheating, which could melt his internal organs if not careful.

Personality

Emery may not be the most social of butterflies, but he does have some kind of rugged charm. He isn't the best at communicating with his words, but generally, his actions speak louder anyways. He is a good spirited man and knows when to laugh, when to cry, and when to get even. He is relatively level headed and the voice of reason (especially when his friend and partner Sheri starts up her wild ideas). He is very grounded in his moral compass and tends to play more on his compassion rather than his cold hard training. He isn't the most calculating of people, and other than his overclocking panel, Emery is terrible at using technology. He tend to leave all the high-techie stuff to his partner. One of Emery's greatest knockbacks, however, is his temper. He doesn't lose it too often, but when he does, hell shall shower the earth with fire and brimstone. No technological device is safe. Emery has been known to even throw vending machines at people.

Other

- Emery is what people like to call a defected techie. Even though he has augmentations himself, he is much more in tune with the physical world and can't quite grasp the concept of efficiently using tech.

- He is also the kind of man that likes to make things with his hands. He may not know how to program a circuit board, but he can put together a mean machine. Emery, you grease monkey, you.

- For some reason, Emery takes personal offense when people call him "Runner" instead of "Shadow." He gets all bent out of shape.

Background

Life for Emery had been a rollercoaster. His father was a military man and his mother was unfortunate enough to have died on the operating table when she was trying to get new cybernetics. He grew up as the middle child with an older brother and a younger sister. Early life was difficult, but survivable. It was only until Emery was of age to be recruited into the military did things change for him. Still young and coming from a military household, Emery felt that it was his only option. It didn't help that he didn't seem to be very good at anything else. Maybe guarding, pointing and shooting would be enough. A monkey could do it, right?

Training was tough, but Emery had made it through. His physical prowess seemed to exceed many people's expectations, and even caught the eye of Monarch Solutions. In attempts to strengthen their own militia, they recruited Emery and his older brother into their ranks. Emery honestly wished he had never agreed. He felt as if he sold away his life, his soul, his humanity.

Per quota of Monarch Solutions, Emery and his brother were required to get cybernetic enhancements. Where Emery's brother got simple things (legs and arms), Monarch had something a bit more in store for Emery. Taken back to the labs instead of their own personal clinic, Emery was put down for almost a month to work on all of his enhancements. It was painful, grueling. Half the time when he woke up, he just wish he'd die. When it was all over, they have him only three weeks to recover and adapt. And after seeing Emery stumble about with his new enhancements, they brought him back to the labs for proper testing.

It was in the labs that Emery met Sheri Marie for the first time. She was still young and immature. Much more immature for her age. She seemed like she had grown up in the labs. Regardless, she was alluring to him. They instantly became friends, which made the lab testing much more bearable. Eventually Emery was sent back out on the field, but his performance just wasn't what it used to be before the augmentations. He couldn't get the hang of it. Monarch labs decided to do something they thought they might never do: they let Emery go.

Emery was discharged from the Monarch militia. He was allowed to keep his augmentations, seeing as they were far too embedded into his body to just take out. It would also give them the ability to occasionally record his progress. They took little regards on how this would affect Emery emotionally.

Emery had gone through bouts of depression. He felt worthless. Even the military didn't want him, because he was so useless. His depression made it difficult for him to find jobs. Eventually, he fell into the livelihood of a drunkard. But it was one fateful night in the Redlights district that Sheri Marie stopped in front of Emery and delicately kicked him. From that point on, the two teamed up and built a reputation for themselves. They became freelancers with cleverly picked names. Or, at least they thought it was clever at first until people kept mixing them up.

Sheri Marie Turner

 • Alias: Runner (always confused for Shadow)

 • Age: 28 21

 • Gender: Female

 • Sexuality: Unknown

 • Occupation: Informant/Errand Runner

 • Appearance:

Sheri Marie stands at 5'6" with a petite and slender build--very optimal for escaping through small or tight areas. She is very athletic and flexible, allowing her to maneuver herself quite easily. Her skin is near flawless, rivaling those Korean popstar drones. The only blemish she has is in the form of a small black tattoo on her left shoulder; a small bird's wing which matches her best friend and partner's, Emery (whom has the same wing, but on his right shoulder and facing the opposite direction).

As far as cybernetics goes, Sheri has augmented eyes, allowing her to access the internet and cyberspace with ease. Her eyes are perpetually pink with yellow rings. Her eyes also allow her to have different types of vision, including infrared, night, and more refined motion sensing.

She also has augmentations to her skeletal system. Like Emery, her bones are reinforced with a lightweight metallic alloy that allows her to be more durable when fighting, but light at the same time. Unlike Emery, however, she has cybernetic legs that allow her to run at high speeds. Mini jet propellers have been installed in her hands and forearms to allow her to stop and turn with ease and without worry of having to stop.

Personality

Sheri is the type of person you expect to see on a soda pop commercial. She is bright, cheery, optimistic, and very whimsical. She takes enjoyment from the simple things in life. She also enjoys a good snooping into other people's personal lives. It comes with the territory of being an informant, as well as someone that has a high sense of curiosity. Her curiosity has led her into many sticky situations. However, her elusiveness aids her in getting out of even the most dangerous of scenarios. Though Sheri herself may seem like an open social butterfly, she tends to keep her own personal information a secret. Especially her own thoughts and emotions. She always exudes a peppy and sometimes even airheaded persona in order to keep her true thoughts hidden. Needless to day, Sheri really is the life of the party with her many eccentric and crazy antics.

Other

- If Sheri isn't on a job, she's probably bar hopping in hopes to find a good dance partner.

- She never forgets a face! Or... so she likes to think. Sometimes her memory could be a little spotty.

- Sheri has what Emery likes to call "lost puppy syndrome"-- she likes to follow people.

Background

Sheri's memory on the early parts of her life are all a blur. She vaguely remembers family and a home. Her memories only start to kick in at Monarch Labs. By thirteen years old, she was taken off the street and promised cybernetics that would amaze her family and friends. It was a test trial, but being so young and gullible, she thought it would be the greatest thing to show off at school. Sheri had always been a brave girl, and so the consequences didn't seem to phase her.

That was... until she realized she would never be going home. Any and all record of her having a family and home were erased once she was in Monarch's hands. First, she spent a month in their labs adjusting to her new eyes. Then one month turned into two, which turned into half a year, and eventually... she lost track of time. She even forgot her age after so many years. Her life become that of an experiment, conditioning her body for... something that was to come. She had heard word about some kind of A.I., but it was all in a completely different language to her.

It was one fateful day that the militia crew brought in a young man. He seemed so lively. Feral was what some of the scientists would mock and say while the man fought against their augmentations. Eventually, Sheri and Emery became friends. He was the first friend she could remember, and she looked up to him like a brother she never had. Her heart wretched when she found out Emery was discharged.

Through sheer determination, Sheri escaped. With help from a foreign tech doctor, she was able to change enough of her face to not be recognized. All Monarch chips were destroyed. She finally felt free. But there was something that she had to do before she could truly live for the first time since she could remember. She had to find Emery.

Finding the ex-militia soldier wasn't as hard as she expected. In fact, it was relatively easy to find him sleeping on the curbside with a bottle of booze in his hand. A notso gentle kick startled him awake. A nice quick conversation revealed her identity to him. Relieved that they found each other, the two decided that they would partner up to work together. Now Freelancers, they go by the names Shadow and Runner. Sheri had a few more aftermarket cybernetics installed to keep up with their line of work. The two have been at the freelancing gig for about six years now.
