Realistic or Modern Counterbalance

If he was bound to be on the wrong side of a hit-and-run at some point in his life, it couldn't have happened at a worse time or place. Luke stared at the mangled heap of metal half submerged by the rapid stream down below. A sigh escaped his lips and he stepped forward to begin the descent down to the riverside but just as he did so the motorcycle lurched, scraping loudly against some rocks before plopping fully into the river and vanishing entirely.

There goes the one girl who's always stood by my side through thick and thin, Luke mourned, mouth flat. Speaking of girls... Oh crap, Lisa.

He was supposed to be at Lisa's surprise birthday party in 25 minutes. If he was late, he could just say goodbye to those free massages. For a month at the very least. A growl of despair forced its way out of Luke's chest and if he flailed his arms helplessly for a few seconds well, there wasn't likely to be another human being to see it within a ten mile radius. He'd been hiking up in the park for the first time in months -- Thanks Jim, for your excellent suggestion. Look where that got me! -- and was still out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing but trees and foothills.

Luke wasn't the type to stand around and wish for miracles, so he set off on foot, pausing on the middle of the bridge to angrily whip his helmet over the side. The pathetic splash it produced only made him want to grind his teeth, so he turned towards Renton, hoping he still had enough time to make it town before it got completely dark.

The room was dark and smelled heavily of a flowery perfume. Cat didn't dare turn on the light in the large apartment, instead taking out a small windup flashlight stored in her backpack. After all, this wasn't her apartment. The woman who lived there was a middle aged woman with a large amount of wealth to her name. Cat had staked out this apartment for two weeks know. The woman went to work from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, she had no family that lived with her except two cats, and she seemed to go out drinking with coworkers a lot.

Now was the perfect time to sneak in, grab some jewelry, and get out. The woman shouldn't be back for another couple of hours, giving Cat plenty of time. Quickly but quietly, searching drawers and under mattresses, she finally found a couple of gold bracelets. Nothing super expensive, but enough. She was going to search for something a little bit for pricey when she heard the click of a lock.

Her eyes widened and her breath caught in her throat. Cat hurriedly shoved the flashlight in her bag. Cursing under breath, the thief tried to open the glass door leading to the balcony quickly but quietly. Reaching for the fire escape ladder nearby, she felt the cold metal in her grasp. Cat sighed in relief. Next was a foot. She would have to jump if only a short distance. Taking a deep breath, she tried to leap over to the ladder. The toes of her sneaker touched the rung. Cat thought she had made it when she felt her foot fall through. Her foot slipped off the ladder and the world seemed to slow down as her grip filled, falling towards the ground.

The ground was hard and cold. A sharp pain shot up through Cat's right leg, filling her eyes with tears. Letting out a yelp, she knew that she had broken her ankle.

Great, just my luck.

Cat managed to crawl towards the brick wall of the building and propped herself against it, letting her ankle rest.

Four down, five to go.

This one, the last one, would be the most...delicious of all.

In the shadows he waited and watched. It had been too long. The cold was beginning to seep through the many layers of his dark robes. How he hated the cold! But still he waited patiently, for Ukhel did not reward the weak. Click. There. The balcony door slid open silently and a girl slipped out, searching frantically for an escape route. Just as he'd known she would. Good Humphrey. Always dependable.

Click.

He raised a long tube to his thin, black lips and aimed upwards, inhaling deeply. But wait--the girl's foot swung wide and she rocketed toward the ground, toward him. Click. A grotesque crack echoed through the alley. He shivered in delight.

"My, my," he hummed, the honeyed words twisting through the air like deadly smoke. "Ukhel is with us." He laughed once, tonelessly, and released a breath into the blowgun. A drugged dart sliced through the air.

Click.
