Scars | they're hard to see for anyone who hasnโt spent 30 minutes staring at him but he has more than a few hidden all around his body. One under his left eye from when he fell off his bike. Some on his back from a dog that got too aggressive. A larger one on his knuckles from a fight he got in when he was younger. To name a few.
History | Frate was raised by his godmother, Honey, in a town of 300 or less. He had to bus to a larger town for school, but his refusal to hide his โflamboyantโ nature got him well bullied in both. He spent most of his teenager years hanging out with Jaime, an older boy and his only friend, either smoking in secluded places or out at concerts in the city.
He played percussion in his schools marching band and a learned to play drum kit at home. He learned to play even more instruments hanging out with Jaime. When the opportunity to travel with the band as a backup bassist arose, he took it, but heโs a drummer at heart.

Vices | Crass - Em isn't the most socially graceful person, they can be crass and swear and get a little loud. When they get excited, they get very animated and don't hide their reactions. This can be a mixed bag, especially if their reaction is negative or angry, as they feel and show their emotions in a big way. They swear a lot and get into arguments sometimes.
Anger issues - They have a bit of an anger problem that they try to reign in when it's around those they love, but it is explosive towards anyone else. This has gotten them into many scrapes and even fights in their life. They have gotten better about it as they get older, but they are still very reactionary when it comes to anger.
Unstable - Em has huge mood swings and can be good for a long time before having an extreme negative dip, sending themselves into a spiral of negative thinking and self-loathing. While love and accepting oneself is kind of the core of their outlook, it isn't always easy. Especially having spent a chunk of their life looking for somewhere stable to just exist. They also don't have the healthiest coping mechanisms.
Jaded - they are a bit jaded about the outcome of their own life, a little apathetic and negative. They don't think they have much else they can do and that they will kind of just be stuck where they are by design of society. This leads to them not really caring much what happens to them (though they aren't self-destructive).
Impatient - Em isn't good at waiting on things and will often complain when they have to wait. It makes them nervous.
Virtues | kind - To Em, the most radical thing is kindness. They unapologetically love others who people might not see the beauty of. There are exceptions to that, of course, if you are cruel to others or do something hateful to those that they love. Despite how jaded they could be with the outcome of their life, they try to make the space around them an inviting one.
adventurous - Em is definitely the friend you would ask to go on a spontaneous trip with you. They always try new things and will find the fun in anything they do.
Individualistic - They highly value being their own individual self, not affected by anyone around them. They don't conform to anyone's idea of what they should be or any stereotypical things if they can help it. They know that stereotypes are inevitable to fall into (like the loud and rambunctious punk), but they don't follow those stereotypes just to fit into them. They get kind of annoyed by those who do choose to excessively conform, but they understand the desire to fly under the radar (as someone who has never been able to, it's an alluring concept).
Protective - They are fiercely loyal and will protect those around them with everything they have, even if they end up caught in the crossfire. They are also very protective of strangers if they seem in danger, especially those who are already vulnerable.
Confident - They know who they are and, for the most part, what they want. They are unwavering in their idea of themselves and won't compromise for others. They can stand up for themselves and others in ways that others might not be able to.

Em's father died when they were about 2, leaving their single mother to raise them and their 6 year old sister on her own. While there were struggles, their life was full of love and they never wanted for the necessities. They didn't always get the extra things most children did, but toys on birthdays and clothes for Christmas were enough for them. Their mother was big on holidays, even when the money was tight, and a big to-do was always made about them within their means (this means holiday themed music, decorations that were often reused year to year, and thematically appropriate food when they could), leaving Em with an affinity for them.
They weren't very popular in school and tended to stick to the sidelines, but they had their own group of misfits as the years passed, collecting the outcasts in their wide net to take under their wing. They would all hang out at the skate park or go urban exploring after school and eventually all got into the alt/punk scene and learned to give each other piercings and stick n' poke tattoos, cut each other's hair and diy their clothes. It became a popular pastime for them to change their appearance as they got bored and Em was particularly good at this, dying their hair every couple of months and becoming a practice dummy for their friends diy piercings and tattoos. This lead to Em exploring their gender presentation a little more and discovering that they maybe didn't align with a gender at all, belonging somewhere in between. Their friends were all pretty accepting of this.
During this same time, Em's mom was dating around and had gotten engaged to a man named Steve. He moved in around the same time that Em's sister, Clementine, was leaving for college, so a huge dynamic shift happened in the household at the same time that Em's particularly angsty years hit, leaving a rift within the family. Steve wasn't terrible to their mother, but was restrictive on Em due to their anti-conformity and their insistence on experimenting with their presentation, wearing skirts and other feminine clothing. A couple of years of Steve and a huge wedge was put between Em and their mom, not allowing them to come out to her because they feared her reaction.
When Em was 17, Steve was tired of "Em's shit" and told them to either stop with the feminine clothing or get out from under "his roof", so Em left that night and didn't speak to Steve or their mom for a long time. They couch surfed and did what they could to get by, leading them even further into the punk and alternative music scene as they began working with different bands they'd encounter as they bounced around. Eventually, they got to a little more stable situation and started taking music a little more seriously. They also have very much regretted leaving without telling their mom anything, but haven't found a way to remedy that.
