First off: I'm making this up as I go. ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯
Second off: Characters will be the figurehead of your colony, but don't need anything more than their name, some basic preferences, and a VERY basic personality. EVERYTHING ELSE IS OPTIONAL!
Similarly, colonies will start off pretty bare-bones. 8 people, somewhere around 500,000 credits (which can be spent for goods from either Earth [with a heavy tax!] or other colonies), and enough resources to survive: 550 Food (about a year's worth), and 5,000 Metal. Everything else is considered luxury or used for trade.
