Story [Choose Your Own Adventure] The Final Exam - Magicide

Riddle78

Four Thousand Club
This is what I like to call a Multiple Choice Story,or a Chose Your Own Adventure. The aim is simple. Complete the story,based on choices given. When presented with a choice,you,the readers,vote to determine the future. For better,or for worse. For every choice,a consequence. Your choices may lead you to death,at which point we may roll back,to a point. Or,should something truly calamitous happen,the story ends there. I encourage open speculation and discussion here,as well as asking questions. But,never expect a straight,or even honest,answer... If at all. Good luck,and have fun!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the beginning,there was nothingness. Not even the Infinite Æther existed. Then,a flash of power. From this flash exploded the Multiverse and the Infinite Æther that holds it. And from the Æther,magic was born,and it drifted into the universes. In one of these infinite universes,there is an academy for the Mageborn,and here they study and practice magic.
Entropy,the essence of change. Impossible to nail down,impossible to predict,Entropy is notorious for undoing convention and catalyzing change.
Order is the essence of law and convention. It is rigid,it is predictable,and it is the core of all things uniform,capable of imposing law and order on the chaos of reality.
Stolen from the Primordials,Fire is the essence of emotion and energy. From it all passion and possibility is born,ready to be used. It is raw,it is powerful,and it is to be respected. It can give energy to the inert,instill passion in the dull,and bring warm light to the cold dark.
Water is the source of life. Water is the womb from which we've sprung,and the well from which we drink. Life and logic are the cornerstones of this Water,capable of restoring limbs and opening minds.
The breath of the cosmos,Air is the core of whimsy and freedom. To be free is to be powerful. Magicks of Air focus on liberty and motion,allowing one to emulate the air they harness.
The bones of existence,and the bosom from which all life feeds. Earth is the magic of perseverance and nature itself. To become one with the stone,and to call nature's children from across the Muliverse to your side are only samples of what Earth can do.
All of this you know as an Archmage at the Academy. Before you,in their Harrowing,is a young initiate. You glare down at them imperiously,gazing into their soul. What do you see?
Just so you know,ladies and gents,we need a consensus,or at the very least,a popular vote,in every category before we can proceed. Yes,even the name. If you see something you like,go ahead and make it your vote.
[x] Isella Virte (T-T-T-T-TIE BREAKER!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The girl before you stares at you,wide-eyed,likely wondering what she did to displease you. Her soul reveals all you need to know. Her name is Isella Virte,and her Spark is fiery with earthen elements. The Æther saw it fit to gift this child with power over energy,emotion,stone,and nature. Such a curious fusion. Regardless,you have everything you need. "Isella Virte,your Spark knows Fire and Earth." With a wave of your hand,the door behind you opens. "Proceed to your destiny." The girl nods after a moment,and scurries out of the hall,through the door behind you. "Let in the next one!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are now Isella Virte
Your life in this Academy was rough. There were hundreds of others,all competing for the precious few spots at the final exam. Only the finest would be set on this test,the rest forced to start all over again. During the six years of study and practice,you felt as if you'd be doomed to start over. However,a week ago,you received a missive from one of the Archmagi,proclaiming you to be one of the students to take part in the examination. You swell with pride. If you felt like you were doing shit,and you got in,imagine if you actually had confidence!
But the feeling was crushed almost instantly. There were three others to compete with. For all you know,you're bottom of the barrel for this. Regardless,you set out to make your preparations. All Aspirants are allowed the clothes on their backs,one familiar,and anything they can fit into their hands,pockets,and the satchel they received at the beginning of their time here. Every Aspirant is going to bring something different to the table,even if everyone somehow specialized in Fire and Earth. Your satchel contains about a dozen Mimic Orbs,magical objects capable of becoming perfect replicas of simple objects,as well as a folding mirror,which has a variety of applications to a Mage.
The clothes on your back are simple,yet durable. Heavy boots,made for walking. Practical trousers,with empty pockets (Nothing useful would fit in them),a shirt,and a heavy jacket. Though,the jacket was slung over your shoulder,at the moment. The Blasted Plains are too damn hot to wear that thing. Finally,there's a silver pendant with an aquamarine in it around your neck,capable of projecting a minor illusion,just in case having your knife ears on display would be a bad idea. Your clothes are white and brown in colour.
As you march across these sun-blasted plains,your familiar travels alongside you. It's a large bird,covered in black feathers,with a long,flowing tail. The skull was host to a long,hooked beak and six eyes. Nothing out of the ordinary. The massive raven flew beside you. "Save your strength,Arma." The bird squaked,and landed on your shoulder,and nuzzled your cheek. "You know you don't need permission to land." Arma raised her wings in a shrug,as if to say Your point? You roll your eyes,and walk on.
Your rust-orange locks are bound in a ponytail that reaches the small of your back,held in place by a pair of jade rings,one near the base of your skull,the other a few inches from the end. Between them,the hair was braided. Your fair skin,despite being under the Six Suns for a large majority of your time here,was still almost white like snow. Your skin just didn't tan. It simply burnt. As you marched across the desolate plains,dust swirling around you and in your wake,your emerald eyes catch sight of four figures up ahead,standing,almost at vigil. "Finally..." You break into a run to close the distance,forcing Arma to take wing and follow.
You arrive at the gathering,and fell in line beside your peers. You appraise them openly,because they're doing the same for you.
One was a massive hulk of a man,completely eschewing a shirt. His hands were gauntleted,with large gemstones in the backs of the hands. One was an oval jet,the other an oval topaz. His single eye was squinted at you,scrutinizing you. He mouths something to himself,then turns to face the Archmage.
The next is a woman,appearing to be about your age,though that's up for debate. She was quite obviously a Djinn,a creature of pure magic. Her skin was constantly changing pigment,but that was the only thing betraying her chaotic nature. Her clothes consisted of an elegant black and silver gown,and you can see a few scrolls poking out of her satchel,and you could swear you see something moving within. Her violet eyes run up and down your body a couple of times,before she gives a little "Humph",and turns to face the Archmage with the Cyclops.
As she turns,you catch a glimpse of something small,pointed,and metal at the small of her back,but it's quickly obscured by her satchel again.
The final Aspirant has his arms crossed over his chest,almost as if he thinks he's your superior. His dark skin,ruby eyes,and short,yet wild,red hair betrays him as a Fire Elemental. His loose trousers and shirt are an off-white,and he wears wristbands of what appear to be steel. With a nod - The meaning behind it lost upon you - He turns to face the Archmage,while bending down to retrieve his satchel and staff.
The Archmage - The same one that peered into your soul,you realize - Is standing at the edge of an abyss. He gestured at the four students,and spoke. "You are Magi. Your soul surges with the power of the Infinite Æther. By your Might,it is called to you. By your Will,it is shaped to your whim. By your Desire,it is unleashed. And among hundreds of your peers,you four are the finest." He looked at the Aspirants in turn,gazing into their souls with that glare that could bore a hole through an iron mountain. Arma,on your shoulder,squaked.
The Archmage ignored her,and continued, "You now stand upon the edge of your youth. Until now,you were guided. Assisted. Controlled. Before you is your adulthood,where you will be let loose,unsupported." He gestured at the yawning abyss below him for emphasis. "Your final exam is thus: You will be sent to another Universe,one where Magi are few,far between,and feared. You are to find the one with the Spark that knows all Mana,not just one or two." The Aspirants drew a collective gasp. We have to get a Catalyst's soul!?
The Archmage raised his arms,and began to rise into the air. "There will be no questions. There will be no advice. Go,now,and know that only ONE may pass. The others will be dead to the Æther."
Well. That's encouraging. The Cyclops is the first to take the plunge. He sprinted at the cliff,then leapt off of it in an elegant dive. You just notice that he doesn't have a satchel. He's followed by the Fire Elemental,who hopped off the cliff,holding his staff as if he were going to spear someone on landing. The Djinn followed immediately afterward,simply striding to the cliff,then striding over the edge,tumbling down.
You're the only one left. You approach the cliff,and look down into the abyss. It is an infinite sea of blackness and stars,your peers nowhere to be seen,despite them having only dropped in moments beforehand. You shrug Arma off your shoulder,and stand with only your heels on solid ground. You inhale deeply,close your eyes,and point your shin up as you bring your arms out from your sides,and lean forward.
You fall forward into the Star Fissure,Arma squaking and diving after you. Eyes shut,you only feel yourself tumbling through the abyss,but that sensation is rapidly lost to nothingness. You can't even hear the air rushing past your ears anymore. Despite this,you're still breathing evenly. Calmly.
Then,suddenly,you feel and hear the rushing air again. It feels significantly colder. Over the wind,you hear strange sounds. Rumbling. Growling. The chatter of a city market. And the smell! What in the Æther was that smell!? But,all of this was all in a moment,as you struck the ground,back first,heavily,followed very rapidly by your head. The last thing you hear before blacking out is a strange crunching sound,and your back suddenly getting quite wet and cold.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You regain consciousness,and are instantly alert. You spring to your feet,with Arma fluttering down from a nearby rooftop to try and land on your shoulders,but your blood didn't quite get the time it needed to properly recirculate,and so,your head swimming in molasses,you fall right back down,Arma following you down,hovering,looking concerned. You take a deep breath,and,after a few seconds,slowly get back up to your feet.

You are now thoroughly soaked. To make matters worse,this land is cold. You look around,allowing Arma to perch herself on your shoulder once more. You're in a tiny courtyard,surrounded by buildings at least five stories tall. The only public entrance was blocked by...Something. It vaguely resembled a stagecoach,but there was no hitch. And it was painted silver,with something black rimming the wheels. The strange coach,plus the ground,buildings,and pretty much everything else,had at least some of this strange white matter on it. It was cold,crunched underfoot,and melted to water at the slightest warmth. Curious...

In this strange matter,you could see several sets of footprints,all headed towards the strange coach. They obviously belonged to the other Aspirants,if the huge set was any indicator. However,before you could get a chance to follow them,a voice interrupts you. "Aah! The fourth Aspirant awakes!" You wheel around,and see a man standing on the tiny porch before a door,leaning on a wrought iron rail. He was wearing a pair of rough-looking blue trousers,a pair of heavy-looking boots,and an equally heavy-looking jacket. In each hand was a white porcelain mug,filled with something hot enough to steam,though he was sipping from one. "Hot cocoa? It'll warm you right up."

In your current state,the offer certainly is tempting,but you're still in a strange land.
