Name: Charlotte (Charlie) Gardner

General information:

 • Age: 25
 • Home: Thalassa, Dione system
 • Race: Human

"Kinda boring I know. Don't have cool eyes, reflexes or, you know, anything honestly awesome really. It's almost as if the 'verse ran out of the pretty crayons when dreaming me up."

Appearance:

Charlie has short, wavy hair which dusts the top of her shoulders. Mousy brown, she always found it a bit boring, so she brightened it up with a few shots of brilliant blue. She’s short, coming in at 5’2 but packs quite a punch, so don’t let her small stature fool you. She weights 8st, so is an average build for her height, but beneath the tanned skin from so many childhood days spent under the sun at school, ripples sinuous muscles. She has a warm smile which brightens up a heart shaped face, where two deep blue eyes are centre piece above a button nose. Here, navigation glasses tend to be balanced, giving her a well-read look. Her high cheek bones give her a perpetual mischievous look which makes people simultaneously drop and rise their guard. Why? Well on instinct it’s only natural to want to trust Charlie’s sweet persona which she presents. However, there's always a hint of her wicked smile which constantly puts people on edge, as they are always waiting to see what she's got up her sleeve next. Of course, most of the time they don’t actually have to worry.

"The word "most" is key here"

Her clothes are always relaxed, with loose combat trousers and tight black tops being her daily attire. She’s also got at least one comic book close to hand, or a single pen tucked neatly behind one ear. Even if tech makes things easier for her, she likes to work stuff out when tinkering, by pen and paper, resulting in numerous ink stains to decorate her clothes and colour her skin. When she’s cooking however, she usually cleans up a little, not wanting to get ink into people’s food. Of course, she also has to keep her clothes clean too, so she had a simple overall she likes to wear, which patterns and badges sown into the material. She thinks it looks cool, but honestly… it resembles a potato sack which had a rough time with the children in nursery when it came to finger painting time.

Equipment and skills:

Charlie has a rather large pistol that she keeps strapped to her belt.

“I call him lil’ John.”

Navigation glasses, these are small, normal looking glasses, but when you put them on, you realise they link up to her bikes navigation system and shows the suggested route which the pilot can follow, if it’s not set to auto that is. These glasses also help aim and keep track of her squad during a square off. Around her wrist, Charlie also carries a portable music player which doubles as a watch. From here, the device connects to some wireless headphones the woman wears while she’s driving.

“Gotta have some tunes to brighten the trip.”

Lastly, Charlie’s bike. Her baby. Her one and only (she’s never really had a long term relationship, so just go with it). She loves it, cleans it and even sings to it. It looks big because it is big. “Yet he purrs like a kitten.” It is one of the rarer models but it is not by far the most sought after within the market. Instead, Charlie's bike is an older model which had been refurbished with some of the latest technology. "I can't upgrade everything. Its expensive." Her bike is lighter than other models, which is a necessity due to Charlie's smaller than average size. However, what it lacks in weight and strength it makes up for in speed, as well as couple of light weight weaponry. In a fight, Charlie relies more on evasive tactics but this strategy hasn't let her down yet. On top of this, due to where she grew up, Charlie is a prime swimmer and diver. She can hold her breath for an exceptionally long time and loves the ocean. In fact, she has a recording of the waves from back home on her music player to help lull her to sleep when she is stressed. Furthermore, she wears a single small silk cord around her neck. Its nothing fancy to the eye, but its worth is beyond imaging. If you know what you are looking at, that is.

Personality:

Charlie has a sweet, loyal and quirky centre which is wrapped in a tough casing of spiky sarcasm and dark humour. However, once you navigate the mine field which is Charlie’s defences , you quickly realise that her spikey attitude just a way of her telling you she cares. Humour is also a key part of the girl’s personality, so she is always up for a good laugh. The girl also loves speed and the thrill of the chase, whilst also loving an opportunity to bake, curl up and stuff her mouth full of sweets while watching chick flicks. But honestly, she prefers people think more about the first bit of her personality than the latter… street cred and what not.

Background:

Charlotte was born to a middle class family in one of the larger ‘port’ cities belonging to Thalassa, the largest water based moon within the Dione solar system which circled Ouranos, a gaseous cloud giant planet. Being raised in MeLia, a major port city based on the island mass known as Nesoi until the ripe old age of 8, the small girl had lead a relatively average life. She played with dolls, drew pictures of ponies and on more than one occasion, pleaded for a pet dog. Of course her parents said no, because dogs where just a pest, but they did see fit to give her a hamster one day… proudly named Scribbles, Charlotte loved the small rodent until it died 3 months later from an unfortunate crash landing in the bath tub.

I didn’t know hamsters couldn’t swim! Rest in peace, Scribbles.”

Many tears were shed, but soon afterwards, the little girl had larger problems to face than the realisation of mortality. No, this was replaced with the fact that she was being shipped off to a pilot academy. Her parents recognised the new need for pilots with the rise in space travel, trades between planets strengthening, and therefore saw it fit to forcibly control their daughter’s future.

Yeah… it was just a happy bonus that they got rid of me for a while

It did not matter that she loved history or electronic devices, as they would not simply get her the life her parents wanted. So instead, she was popped on a ship and sent to an academy down on idyllic flouting colony Ouranos. Here she stayed for 10 years, practising drills and learning about the new engines, codes and procedures as well as the extensive trading laws which revolved around cargo ships. However, despite the homework and early drills, Charlotte, now known as Charlie, loved it. She was soon coming near the top of her class when it came to flying, although her theory side of things was left wanting. She loved the idea of space, of the promised adventures and faraway places, something she shared with quite a few students. Yet when it came to her 18th birthday, her final year came and went. She had graduated with honours, which was impressive but quickly she found herself out of work. Seemed like everyone’s parents got the same idea as hers and despite her good grades, her personality was her downfall. She tended to be too ‘quirky’ for serious roles and showed, what most employers thought, was dangerous disregard to the law. “Rules are there to be broken! All the major companies prove that…” So instead, when she returned home, her parents found that the sweet girl they had known, had been replaced with a hardened, but still jolly tomboy. The lack of work almost drove the old teenager mad and so as a vent she began to spend some of her time down in some questionable chop shops in the slummy parts of MiLia, where she discovered not only illegal racing, but also some old school buddies who were in exactly the same place. And so, into Charlie’s life, entered the bikes. Naturally, Charlie was curious about these amazing machines and quickly became enthralled by them. The constantly changing tech and upgrades were more than enough to keep the girl occupied. Each new bit of tech being added completely changed handling of the machine. It was a never ending list of possibilities and strategies and with her previous training, Charlie took to her new hobby like duck to water.

“Thankfully not like a hamster…”

Of course with the building of bikes in the lower parts of town, Charlie and her friend inevitability started to get involved with their surroundings, they befriends mechanics who used ‘pre-owned’ parts to make illegal vehicles for street races and became the drivers or pilots depending on which race they ended up in, using their custom bikes. All these years resulted in her learning risky, but helpful tactics in dirty racing and fighting, as well as earning helpful contacts in the slums when it came to smuggling and trading products. Eventually these contacts lead to jobs as a escorts for dodgy dealings out in small planet rings. Admittedly these jobs weren’t exactly what her parents had originally imaged for her, but a job’s a job, even if their little girl raced around on what they considered to be ‘a death machine’. From this point on, Charlie had hopped from ship to ship, never settling for long, as ultimately every if a captain stayed in one place for too long the heat from the law enforcement would begin to focus on them and being a ‘rider’ under the scope of the law wasn’t the best position to be in. However, that all changed when she was hired by Scarlett. When she joined her crew, Charlie felt like she had found a home. A home which had no problem not looking too hard into her resume and past. Plus, here, Charlie has also taken up the mantle as Cook. Not as hard core as Rider, sure. But you better believe she makes the best damn carrot cake you will ever taste… if you are lucky. She doesn’t like cooking for people she has a thing against.

Home world description:

As previously stated, Charlie was born on Thalassa within the Dione system so called for the sheer amount of moon colonies terra-formed within its expanses. Thalassa, the largest water based moon terraformed, in its style of buildings and layout is not unlike that seen Venice today. The moon is also peppered with lush islands, which have been transformed into beautifully managed gardens in which the rich come to relax. This also where some of the best narcotic drugs are grown, as after all, every rose has its thorns, but more on that later. Thalassa's main income comes from being a primary supplier for minerals, which when broken down create fuel for ships. These minerals are mined from the bottom of the oceans near volcanic vents. It is a dangerous job, but few rarely see what happens below the waves. As well as this, there is a sea worm which was discovered in its waters which create the most amazing silk which is worth thousands of pounds for a single yard. However, as previously stated, when removing the mineral and silk trade from their lists, Thalassa has drawn in many due to a mixed breed of plant which were created on the islands, nestled between the waves. This drug, which is honey like in texture, look and taste, can be heated and inhaled to create slow motion effect. It slows the heart rate however, but is known to be used in racers, as the slowed perception of time allows for faster reflexes.

Life on Thalassa, for the most part however, is seen as paradise for many. The culture of its people runs deep and is one of the more fortunate of the terra-formed moons. It has medical facilities, universities and ports. Most are considered lucky to have grown up in the ivory, flouting cities. The underside of the port cities use the tightly packed white towers and network of woven bridges as obstacle courses. These illegal tracks make for plenty of tight turns and close calls, with a high mortally rate. However, Thalassa is not the only moon close by. There is also Alaris a twin sister moon, only this is desert based and known for spice. Naris, the smaller moon used for farming and food supplies, and IcRese an ice moon which remains untouched as far as many people believe. These can all be seen quite clearly in the evening, when the skies turn into a misty purple canvas. What all of these different moons have in common however, is Ouranos, the large gaseous planet which they orbit. The golden, swirling colours seen from space mark the colossal cloud systems which cover a hidden land mass below. Here, 'air' based cities have been created and is a favourite place of pilots to train. With expansive air space, there is plenty of room to practice maneuvers without the dangers of things going wrong in space. Towering pillars have been built up to support the cities, which aren't really flouting but actually have hidden roots. Upon the pillars, the cities take after what was once called monastery look, with high tech influences. Although little greenery is seen, expect for the biospheres used to grow supplies, the cities here use rock gardens as decoration.
