Character Magic/Ability Discussion Thread

Quark

Fundamental Particle
Discussion thread where players can discuss about magic abilities (and some combat styles) for their characters. Players are encouraged to give each other feedback and suggestions.

In case some of you might have trouble more than others, here is an explanation about what is required for powers descriptions. Note that this is just for main character sheets.

If you to want to use badass powers and weapons, you need to show me that you can handle it well. Otherwise, your character will not be allowed to use the skills in the IC thread. If you don't like editing your CS, get it right the first time, or go find another RP with a more laxed GM please :3.

Firstly, when you've narrowed down the general idea for you power, please think about the following:

1. What's the range of effect? Or what is the extent of the damage taken if it is an attack?

2. Are there any special conditions for using it? Or are there any conditions when they are recharging their energy/mana?

3. How do they use it? This is for more broader abilities, like manipulation of a particular element.

4. Is it compatible with the general fighting style and bio for the character? For example, if the character has no understanding of how to use the properties of eletromagnetism, then they really shouldn't be using it.

Generally I'd like to see answers for 1-3 in your description. It's also useful to take a look at other people's cs to get an idea of your character's relative strength. Overall, we need to have a good idea of how your character uses their power. I've attached some examples that I've written.

As a rule of thumb, I always recommend asking yourself: (for combat abilities)

Is there any way to stop your character from using the ability? (eg. a type of attack that interrupts them, or some sort of emotional/mental handicap, etc)

If the answer is "no" (for 90% of the other characters), either it's OP or you haven't fleshed it out yet. The GM or secondary GMs may ask you if you don't have it on the cs, so make sure you prepare an answer.

Most importantly, make sure you RP reasonabley. Remember the rule "you will hit and you will miss".

Some examples relevant to Part 2:

Excuse the badly assigned names. I'm terrible with them, perhaps some of you could suggest alternatives.

Please note that you don't need that amount of detail as I have (though most of it was defining the constraints)

Barrier:

He has the power to build barriers. By focusing up to an area he imagines a box of a certain size. The barrier will appear in a boxed shape, that can only be seen by himself, and will separate everything inside from the outside, as though it is like another dimension. Just a note, that if there is a person inside, they will die as the oxygen is also cut. Other than that everything inside and outside the barrier does not change. The largest size of the barrier is as large as a medium shopping mall, and he can only focus on making up to four barrier boxes at once. It takes about 2 seconds to conjure up the boxes, and it will be continuously depleting mana from him to maintain them being materialized there.

There are two ways to force him to stop. Threaten him to scare him, or make him lose focus. Use one of his fears against him. One other way is someone uses a very quick speed, they can break the barrier of the boundary. (Think of the speed similar to a bullet)

Manipulation of metal: (Erika's part 2 ability, so keep in mind she has more constraints since she's young)

Erika is able to accelerate anything made of alloys or metal to a certain extent, anything within 3 meter radius from her. The speed of these metal can travel no faster than typical arrows. She is able to form them into different shapes, as long as the total volume is not 1.5 times larger than her. To some extent, she is also able to change the temperature of the metal/alloy, but as this requires more mana she only temporarily uses it to change the shape of the metal before letting it quickly reach normal temperature. One side effect she has from this is that Erika is more resilient towards metal poisoning.

Often Erika uses this power to form into sharpened points like a small blade or darts, the two types of weapons that she is best at. She needs to be able to visualize the shapes clearly in her head first, and then it'll take about 20 seconds to occur. This may take longer, if the object she is manipulating is larger in size or is an impure object (ie. has other elements within it). During this time, she can only defend for herself physically and is more open to magical attacks. With her low defense, she has to keep on evading any attacks. She would want to use them like bullets, but she's never been able to achieve a speed high enough (generally about 343m/s, the speed of sound in air).

Since it is metal, she is also able to use it like electrical conductors and divert electricity in different directions. She often likes to use conduction wires that can commonly be found. However, these metal wires are constrained to the capability of the true scientific properties. This means that for the common copper wires, she cannot use it to conduct high-damaging currents since the wires would either melt or the circuit breaker would be activated (since common households would have them). To deal with this, she does carry a small bottle of mercury with her, though that can only give her limited capabilities here.

The metal is just normal metal found from around her, and would be useless against intense heat. When also exposed to fire and water attacks, Erika's speed in manipulating metal would be dropped. She will also take more damage during this time if she receives a fire-based or water-based attack due to her element affinity.

Summoning: Alice in wonderland

This was an ability that Shun had discovered when he was using a particular phone social app. By typing in the user status box a particular name of a character from 'Alice in Wonderland', he can cause the character to materialize right beside him. He can only summon one at a time, but can change the summon by typing the character name. They are all used for offensive purposes, with the exception of Alice that can provide some support. The materialized forms have differing skills and will return back to his phone cyberspace after taking a number of hits on Shun or the summon. The forms are able to there as long as the phone he is using has the app installed, with his user logged in. If the battery runs out on the mobile phone in his hand, then the summon will de-materialize.

At this moment he can only summon the couple of forms:

1. Alice: the wildcard summon of the bunch. Alice is the only summon with two features. She can fight physically, by using cards as like darts and projectiles. She always carries around a bag where she can offer to others. Inside contains cake and sweets. Eating different types of the sweets can enhance physical strength, endurance, defense or speed for about 30 minutes. They can be consumed by humans.  After 8 hits Alice will disappear.

2. Cheshire: a large cat that is very skilled at hunting after a specific target that Shun will assign it to. It is rather quick in jumps and using its claws. It's ability is to remain invisible and camouflage with the background. Shun often uses it as like a guardian when he is walking in the street. The cat is able to be very stealthy and make sure that no one is approaching the young man. After 2 hits, Cheshire will de-materialize.

3. Dormouse: this summons an emperor penguin-sized mouse, with a gentleman's suit. He looks rather drunk from... tea. He has an umbrella in his hand that the rat can fight with, in a rather drunk manner. His ability is that if he takes one critical hit, then he will have a second where he is more sober. When that happens, he will let out one large ear-piercing screech. It can cause rather bad headaches, and with a high enough matching pitch/frequency, it can cause some very nearby objects to shatter. After 2 hits, Dormouse will de-materialize.

Some examples relevant to Part III:

These are powers with limitations specifically tailored to Threads of Fate part 3 standards

Enhanced speed:

She is able to move at exceptionally fast, up to the speed of light, without harming herself. This can be done up to four minutes, or she feel extreme fatigue to the point that her lower leg muscles would be damaged. That said, her lower limb movements are faster than her upper body. During this time, her body functions as normal, and can only help her evade. She is able to adjust the speed of how fast she wants to run, but the faster she is travelling the harder it is to take abrupt turns and is especially bad if she is a cramped place with many corners.

When travelling very fast, her body will react accordingly so that her organs don't turn into pink liquid.

Mind Hacking: the current most powerful ability I have in the descriptions

Pieta has the power to mind-hack, in the instance of a moment to forcibly help someone make a choice. This is coupled with her mind-reading skill, and has similar constraints. She needs to focus on one person at a time, to have a general idea of the context of the situation. To focus on someone she is required to be observing the person, either through sound or sight. She can then make the choice for them, but needs to do it within 5 seconds or the focus will be lost. When making these choices, it can be reasonable or not reasonable for the character. Once the choice has been made, she will lose focus, and requires a lapse time of another 20 seconds before she can do it again. She can mind-hack people more than once if she wishes to. For anyone with good magic experience, they may feel that their mind has been prodded and that there is a hint of magic foreign magic on them.

The best way to interrupt Pieta is to attack her physically when she is in focus, or use something to distract her, like throwing something dangerous.

(Proper discussion in OOC will be made with relevant characters before actual use)

Gravity-shifting:

He has the power to change the direction of gravity in any direction. This means that he is able to accelerate towards a certain designated destination within his vision. He is also able to adjust the strength of the gravitational force around himself, the minimum being zero g. Where he remains supended there. All of the gravitation forces that he can force himself is up to maximum 2g. He cannot go beyond 3g, otherwise the strain would be too much on his body. Increasing the gravitational force on himself will  also deplete more mana. This is effective about 5 meters around him for all inanimate objects. Additional mana is required for applying the effect on someone else near him.

A typical way of using it, is accelerating towards a building, and standing on the walls of the building. He generally uses it as a way of transport, where he can travel through air as if he is flying towards one surface towards another.

When he is shifting gravity, when receiving a critical injury can make him lose his focus immediately. Though he is travelling somewhat fast, he is travelling in a straight line so it's easy to predict his movements. Other ways of distracting him including using someone he cares about as hostage. No matter the range, he can only keep himself using these abnormal  gravity abilities for 10 minutes before he needs to deactivate the ability. There is a 1 minute cooling period before he can use it again.

Knowledge of the Pit: (not really for combat)

By sacrificing her talents and abilities for more magic, she has bargained for the knowledge of the pit. This means that her current magical power cannot increase anymore in effects. For the intellectual property she's bargained for, she is required to make the following vows:

- If she discloses the information to others directly she will die. Or worse, she'll be dragged to the pit.

- She cannot gain any new abilities anymore. Physical strength however is another case.

On her end, she has come to have a clearer idea of who is causing the pit to be activated, and who is plucking these specific people in and out of the worlds. She has also come to understand of how the world-jump works, how to initiate it and also why the pit phenomenon occurs. She is allowed to carry the information with her to every world that her consciousness jumps to.

Note: Yes, you can sacrifice your character's power potential to gain some vital knowledge about the pit or the overarching villains. People are not afraid of their characters dying or bleeding/breaking, but figured that most are more reluctant to capping their character's power potential. It would be rather cruel to the characters, and it'd require quite a bit of sacrifice, wouldn't it?
