Is there a way to change tags on search threads? I can only find the option to change sub-genres.

Yes, there is but a bit less obvious.
You need the icon that looks like a small price tag just below your thread title, next to the time you posted the thread.

You should be able to edit the tags if you click on the tag itself, I believe.
