PROLOGUE

Grey snow floated down from the sky, covering all visible surfaces around him. He blinked several times trying to rationalize the world around him. Though the scenery certainly set that of a midwinter day he knew for sure that the grey snow was ash, and that it was closer to the middle of the night than the middle of the day.

The city was burning, the sky was crimson, and the moon was not only the closest he'd ever seen it but it was also full and red. The skyline of the city was alight with fire from burning buildings. The streets were covered not only in ash but garbage and over turned vehicles. There was no blood and no bodies, but he knew that the dead out numbered the living.

Dark Water City had seen her last days, and though he wasn't at all a religious man he couldn't help but feel the urge to plead to every god he could think of for forgiveness because the only word that came to mind at this scene was "apocalypse".

The city was eerily silent, even with raging fires beyond his sight. This silence was interrupted by the sound of tearing. It was as if someone was ripping fabric in half except not only was it infinitely louder but it seemed to be emanating from every direction. It was so loud that he almost thought the noise was coming from his own mind.

That this scene before him was so shocking and disturbing that he was going insane and the sound was the auditorial manifestation of him going crazy. It echoed from every corner of the world and it hurt him to hear it. He squeezed his eyes shut and put his hands over his ears and still it didn't quiet.

There was a ringing in his ears and the ripping sound had stopped just as suddenly as it had started. There was the briefest sensation of someone touching his chin and lifting it up, but when he opened his eyes there was no one before him. In fact he found that he was now looking at the sky, but now it had changed.

Though it was still crimson and the Blood Moon still sat heavy in place, there was now what appeared to be a black tear with a purple outline stretching from one horizon to the other in a straight in. The void was empty, but he believed he could just barely make out the vaguest hint of a twinkling in it. As if to suggest stars just out of his vision.

He stared at the black rip in the sky and tried to think of how to describe it to himself, but all words left him. The only real thought he had was that he thought it was pulsing occasionally, but it was possible it wasn't. He wasn't sure. Honestly he wasn't sure about anything anymore.

There were only two things that he was sure of and the first was that his friends were dead.

The darkness of the void moved as something disgusting began to slither out of it, reaching down from the sky to the ground. The second thing he was sure of was that this was the fault of himself and his friends.

They started the apocalypse.
