The need to study generic subjects did rarely cross the brunettes mind when it came down to it. Not to say she was overly smart, far from it, just fairly average if you looked at recent students as a whole. Besides, it wasn't like she needed most of them in her field of study, beyond math at least. Art was a huge plus, but that was more of a specialized subject. Designing and making jewellery had been a dream since years ago, so to actually study such in a serious manner... She still didn't believe it two months in.

"Hmmn..." Her daydreaming was fairly obvious when it came to seeing her stood in the small kitchen waiting for a pot full of water to boil. Seemed just about done too with the way it suddenly started whistling. The young woman jumped with a small squeak, though quickly covered her mouth with one palm whilst other hand transferred pot to tray waiting at the side.

Water pot sat upon the tray alongside a small basket of various loose teas, appropriate utensils & another small plate of hand-made biscuits. Yep. Perfect! Everything was set and they could focus on studying without any distractions.

Or so she'd hoped.

Of course she'd walk into a room full of across table banter and people sitting on chairs backwards. Ah...

10.png

"You didn't have to doubt me that hard! C'mon!" Falling forward against the back of the chair he'd ridden backward was Ryuji pouting at the foreigner across the table. So maybe he had let his ego get the better of him the other day, but it was just that once! He'd believed he could handle that many weights at once! He totally hadn't been showing off! Not too much anyway. Exaggerated sigh left his lips as he turned head toward his bespectacled ally. "You believe me, right!?" Though given the bemused look on the other's face he didn't expect too much a favourable response.

"Man.. Would'a thought we'd leave all the studying back in highschool though. This sucks." Arms now folded over the back of the chair, Ryuji rested his chin atop them to glare down at the pile of closed books atop the table. "I'm doing sports! Why do I gotta know more maths and stuff!?" Or so he hoped sports would be the only thing he'd need for a living, he didn't have many thoughts on what to do if that fell through. "I guess I kinda get why English, but ain't that what professionals have translators for?" Or you could fumble through with your own broken English and make a fool of yourself. Yeah, no. He had zero intentions on doing that. Not on purpose anyways.

Akira knew how it was to study with the likes of Ryuji. In the year he had spent at Shujin, he had quickly grown accustomed to his ways so much so that his focus wouldn't deter unless he desired it to. Even so, he still listened in on the banter, though as the conversation was directed towards him, Caitlin had fallen silent and he could feel both pairs of eyes on him.

Tapping the end of his pen against his book and sighing softly, he gave in and lifted his head for the time being. He glanced between the two brief before finally settling his eyes on Ryuji. "You haven't given me a reason not to believe you," he stated before he could feel the foreigner glaring daggers in his general direction. "But you know what they say, seeing is believing. Maybe you'll have to prove it to me sometime."

Hearing the banter pick up again, Akira chuckled softly to himself as he allowed himself to lean back and watch the two go on as he simply watched on. While he understood Ryuji's distain for studying, it wasn't something they could easily escape from, even in their college years, unless they wanted to flunk out. There were plenty of students who gave in to the freedoms of adulthood and pushed aside their studies in favor of partying their college years away. It was a tempting lifestyle to pick up for almost anyone their age, though it was best to find a balance between studies and leisure. That's how he looked at it. Then again, perhaps he was some odd exception. He could probably get by without studying and ace most exams with little effort. It was one of the reasons he had been able to manage so much during his year at Shujin. Studying... Phantom Thievery... Constant social interaction... It was a miracle Akira hadn't dropped dead from exhaustion back then. He wasn't one to boast such things though.

"You'll survive, Ryuji," Akira assured him before he heard Caitlin begin her dramatics. Swallowing back his own snide comments and snickers, the dark haired teen didn't want to add to the foreigner's playful bit, but admittedly it was hard to do so. It was all in good fun after all and he was sure Ryuji knew that, though he knew he wouldn't simply let it be either. A new bit of rowdy banter was sure to arise from it all. Maybe he should return to his own studies and let the two go back and forth. It was their time to waste.

As he prepared to shift his attention back to the history book in front of himself, Akira's attention was drawn towards the kitchen as the soothing scent of tea reached him. He would have much preferred coffee, but he wasn't the host here. He'd have to settle for what he could get. Besides, a bit of change never hurt. He drank enough coffee in a day. Something different could spice it up a bit.

"That smells really good," he directed towards Ichiko as she emerged. "What kind is it?"

Eyes flickering up from her book, Caitlin's gaze momentarily met Ryuji's as he spoke to her and claimed she should have never doubted him the other day. Typical. Sure, he may have been able to lift the weights, but it hadn't come without its own struggles and she was well aware of it. She had seen how he had almost instantly dropped them the moment he was able to bring them up to chest level.

As she opened her mouth to protest his claims, her train of thought was immediately cut short as the conversation was directed towards the other boy who currently sat with them. Unlike the rest of them, he was clearly engrossed in what he was reading and from a single glance it was clear his mind was elsewhere. At least one of them seemed intent on doing actual studying. Secretly she envied that kind of resolve. It wasn’t as if she lacked smarts, quite the opposite, but it took everything in her to actually lock in. Ryuji's chatter was more than enough to keep her from getting much of anything done, but Akira, well he was unfazed, or maybe he was merely playing the part to avoid getting caught up in the banter. He was a difficult one to read at times.

When Akira finally showed signs of life and spoke, Caitlin couldn't help but glare at first. Her hostility wouldn't last when he continued on and said he'd like to see it one day. "Ha! Even he has his own doubts!"

Her victory was short lived though as he went on to complain about studying and she gave a roll of her eyes. Caitlin could understand complaining about math, but English? Was he really going to do that in front of her, the native English speaker? It caused her face to scrunch up in a brief display of annoyance, though it was all in good fun and nothing serious.

"Oh no! Imagine needing to learn a second language! The horrors!" she exclaimed dramatically as she rocked back in her chair and threw her hand up against her forehead for even more effect. "I could never imagine learning another language could actually be useful!"

Japanese hadn't exactly come easily to her, but after being thrown into Japan knowing only a fraction of the language, Caitlin had been forced to learn quickly, though her struggles had been one of the reasons she had been a bit of an outcast among the other third years during her time at Shujin Academy. Her tomboyish nature did her no favors either.

"Nobody likes studying, but it's sadly something we have to do. Even athletes are constantly studying. Sure, it's more so by watching others in their sport and finding ways to apply it to themselves, but it's still studying!"

Grinning at her own words, Caitlin's attention was briefly pulled from the two boys as the smell of freshly brewed tea and biscuits hit her nose. Finally Ichiko had joined them!

Of course her first reaction had been to quietly observe the shenanigans that were going on across the table for a few seconds, until her acquaintance drew her attention with a simple question. Slightly bewildered expression softened into her natural smile, "It's just a simple hojicha, but there's juice in the fridge if you'd rather have that?" Though attention was settled on Akira, the question had generally been for everyone present. It wouldn't do for a host to not have other options! "And I made some butter cookies yesterday, please help yourself." Whilst continuing on she began to unload what was on the tray onto the remaining space on the table. Did they have to scatter books around this much? Well, it was more the boisterous side of the table but still...

Once everything was set down and tray tidied away back in the kitchen Ichiko could finally pull out a seat for herself and take in the situation properly. Oh, English? Is that what they were grousing about? In a way she could understand Ryuji's point, but with the way the world was in the modern era now it was a given you'd run into foreign travellers at some point. And with English being one of the most spoken languages in the world it made sense to focus on it rather than others. That wasn't to say she was brilliant at it either. She had a small grasp on the basics, enough to give simple directions, and a few off statements courtesy of Caitlin, but that was about it.

"You should at least learn enough to point out a common landmark or give directions, Sakamoto-san." She nodded whilst opening her own books, easily thumbing to what she'd been studying the night before thanks to the sticky markers she'd left on the page; explaining Japanese foods in another language. Ah. This was where she'd been struggling, ending up in calling it a day and heading to bed.

Childish hiss was the response Akira got toward him being both on his side but at the same time not, in a way. Just you wait! He'd show them both! Eventually! Why not even right now!? They could just- Ah. But there was Ichiko finally emerging from the small kitchen and setting down drinks and snacks. His mouth had opened to voice the suggestion of going to the gym to prove it right that instant, an obvious excuse to get out of studying, but no words left his lips until the last one had finally sat down.

"Nah. Tea is fine. Gonna need the caffeine to deal with this." Totally disregarding the fact hojicha had a lower caffeine count than the usual tea people served, he took up his cup and quickly gulped it down. Not the wisest idea when said tea had just been boiled- Cue the choking and attempts to not like his mouth wasn't boiling to death. Several coughs and chest thumps later-- "I mean you don't have to tell them when you can just show them right? Uh, if what the people are looking for is in walking distance anyways." Gaze wandered over the book Ichiko opened for a brief moment, expression brightening at the topic of food at least. "Food is pretty easy though! Stuff like hamburger or cheeseburger are the same in Japanese and English, right?" The buck was passed back over to Caitlin, her being the one with mastery over English out of all of them what with it being her mother tongue.

"Now I want a burger, damnit..." That would be a plan for later. Akira included, even if he did end up needing to drag him.

Akira heard Ryuji's childish hiss and gave a playful roll of his eyes before they shifted back to Ichiko and he gave a small shake of his head at her question. He didn't need something else. Tea was more than enough. "Ah no, tea is perfectly fine. Thank you." His words were polite as he quickly pushed up his glasses on his face and took a cup and gave a simple nod of his head. He took a small sip before pulling the cup back from his lips and set it down in front of his own books to assure it was out of his way. Before he got back to his work though he quietly spoke up once more, directing his words towards Ichiko: "It tastes great, by the way."

Leaving it at that, Akira shifted his gaze briefly towards Ryuji as he gulped down his own drink. He never changed did he? Feeling his brows flatten, he shook his head with a soft chuckle. Actually, he was surprised the blonde even dared to drink tea to begin with. He'd always been so picky over coffee, he thought it applied to tea as well. Clearly not. Maybe it was just his coffee he didn't enjoy, though he could recall times during their thieving days when he'd reject Sojiro's coffee as well. He supposed that was no surprise though. It was where he had learned to brew his own. Either way, he didn't let himself get bothered or hung up on it. His friend was allowed to like whatever he wanted after all.

Pushing the thought to the back of his mind, his dark eyes averted back down to the opened book in front of himself. Despite his silence though, Akira listened to the conversation still going on around him, though part of him wondered if he should tune it out anyways. Talk about burgers wasn't going to get him anywhere, though given Ryuji's last comment, he could already assume the thoughts going through his head and he didn't doubt it involved him. It wouldn't matter if he wanted a burger or not. If he was honest, one didn't sound too bad as long as it wasn't like the ones he used to try and burn through at Big Bang Burger in attempt of completing their challenges. The thought of mega burgers like those made him almost feel queasy. He never wanted to do that kind of challenge again.

Unlike the two guys, Caitlin wasn't particularly in the mood for tea. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy it, quite the opposite, but her craving was elsewhere. Pushing her seat back from the table, she sauntered across the room towards the kitchen, having no problem inviting herself into whatever was inside. She wouldn't want Ichiko getting up for her sake after all. She could do things for herself. It was her apartment too.

Grabbing the juice from the top shelf, she fished around in the cupboards to grab a glass. Once she finished and put the juice back into the fridge, she returned to the group and gave a small shrug of her shoulders at Ryuji's question as a sly smile crossed her lips. "You ask me as if I'm an expert in Japanese as well." It was a simple, playful joke, but she knew it might get Ryuji riled up more than he already was. It was always amusing to see, even if it was a bit cruel on her behalf. "But if you really must know, yes, they are spoken similarly. Written is obviously different."

Caitlin sunk down into her seat again and set her glass down in front of her own books. "Food aside, you should be able to give directions beyond point, just in case," she remarked before rocked back in her seat, clearly having no focus on her studies at all. Any motivation she had was long gone now. That was to be expected though. Group studying never did her much good, even back in high school. "Besides, if you don't learn English what would happen if I moved back to Canada? Guess you'd never be able to visit, though maybe you'd have to learn French instead."

A snicker slipped from her throat and she reached up to push her own glasses back. She was well aware he wouldn't need to know French in the area of Canada she hailed from, but the thought of it was rather amusing. French had even slipped past her during her years back in her native land. Most of it had barely been retained beyond a few basics. Luckily she'd never need it, or at least she assumed as much.

"I only brewed it.. But thank you, Kurusu-san.." Had she not been seeking where she left off in her textbook with her finger, it would of been scratching at her cheek in an ever so slight fluster. If anyone were to be praised, shouldn't it be those who nurtured the plant until it grew healthy and big enough to be prepared and roasted? She wasn't going to get into an argument over the matter. No, she'd simply smile sheepishly before turning her eyes back down to her book.

What bickering and bantering came between the other two wasn't entirely lost on her mind you. She was listening to an extent, able to pick up on certain things that would require her attention. Lips had curled up into a smile without her noticing at some point, head only raising when she heard the exchange about visiting should Caitlin ever move back to her homeland.

"Ah, don't cellphones have the ability to translate things from image and certain spoken word these days? People say there's an app for everything these days being the information age and all." Not that she was entirely sure of her own words. She did have a cellphone, only the bare minimum to send messages and take calls mind you. The handset was years old and probably out of production for a long time, but if it wasn't broke, no need to have it fixed or changed.

10.png

Burger.. burger.. Tongue clicked as he attempted to scribble down something that resembled English in his notebook.
'hambハン' No! How did he even phase back into Japanese like that?
'buruger'? ...That didn't seem right either.
'hamger' Okay. He gave up.

Three tries wasn't exactly where you'd expect someone of his age and level to give up, but this was Ryuji. Not exactly one for sitting around with papers and books. His expression somewhat soured thanks to both the sniggering and his own frustration. So much so he took both hands to the sides of his head, rubbing at his hair somewhat violently before managing a comeback.

"Then why don't you try it in Japanese!?" Aha! Two could play at this game! Then maybe he could teach something to her! Totally not reflecting the problem back across the table. Why would he do that? Before he could taunt Caitlin any further however came Ichiko's comments about translation apps and he uncharacteristically froze for a second. Not enough to cause concern, yet noticeable if you knew the reason behind it.

Ryuji hadn't really followed cellphone apps besides health and fitness ever since all that had happened. Far too soon. Just thinking about how an app had helped them do all that still gave him the shivers at times. He cast a side glance at Akira in wonder if his friend also had a similar reaction before clearing his throat. "She's right you know! With all this modern day technology being able to do it for us this stuff needs to go out of style already!"

As Ichiko dismissed her own work as "only brewing" it, Akira gave a small shake of his head. He knew there was more to the brewing than most led to believe. Not everyone could make great tea or coffee. He knew that all too well, but he decided not to push it and bother her over such a minuet thing. It wasn't worth the hassle. Instead, he returned to his silence and sunk back into his seat, deciding it was best for him not to get involved in the conversation at hand. Maybe he was being antisocial, but in the long run what did he have to add to the conversation? His Japanese was obviously fine and his English wasn't half bad, though he had Ann to thank for that. She had helped him every now and then when he asked given she was the one with the best English out of his friends. Sure, she wasn't the greatest teacher per se, but it had gotten him a basic understanding and gave him actual experience holding a conversation in the language.

Grabbing his own book, he was rather quick to zone out the idle chatter and get lost in his own studies. Twirling his pen around in his free hand, his eyes quietly scanned over the content he had been focusing on. While it was history, it wasn't the days of samurais or anything like that. It was more modern. Learning of the recent wars Japan had been apart of was hardly exciting though. Akira could attest to that much, but he still didn't complain. There were many names and dates he would have to remember as much as he dreaded it.

With the thought of modern history on his mind, he did pause in his reading to wonder if books were already writing about the Phantom Thieves. They probably had. He could only imagine what they might say. He froze for a moment before he marked his page and fingered through the pages quickly before he got to the most modern section and his gaze fell upon exactly what he had feared might be included; pictures from the broadcast of their calling card for Shido. To see his own unwavering gaze staring back at him from behind the mask he had once wore, Akira flattened his brows before quickly turning back to where he had been. He had seen enough and the last thing he wanted was to have the girls start asking what he was looking at.

Caitlin stared at Ryuji as he told her to try it in Japanese. He did realize how stupid he sounded, right? She was fluent in both languages by now. She had to be otherwise she would have never gotten by. Before she could dig into him though, Ichiko spoke of phone apps that existed to do the very thing they were referring to. Sure, things like that existed, but they could mistranslate and cause more problems than learning a language would. Then again not everyone had the time to learn a new language so she understood why they were turn to such outlets.

"I suppose that is a fair point, but it shouldn't be a substitute! It takes away from the whole human interaction!" she exclaimed. Maybe that was a her thing though. While she wasn't entirely an extrovert, she was a social individual and to her that person to person interaction was important. An app took away some of that and made things awkward at times. Of course, she didn't want to bash on technology, but there was some truth behind her own feelings. Maybe she for once was being too traditional though.

Heaving a sigh, Caitlin sank back in her own seat. She couldn't focus now that they had gotten on this whole conversation. Maybe they should actually go out for some real food. Besides, the only one who seemed to actually be studying was Akira. Glancing towards him, he seemed unfazed by their conversation and had his nose buried in his book and his pen spinning in his other hand. He was lost in whatever he was looking at which was impressive, but also proved he was nothing more than a huge nerd when compared to the rest of them.

"You know, maybe we should go out to eat! We're getting nothing done here anyways! Plus I'm starving now that you brought up burgers!"

Huh!? Well.. She hadn't exactly meant it as a full substitute but... It depended on the person she guessed. Cheeks tinted lightly when she noticed at this point she was just adding fuel to the vocal fire. Deciding to remain quiet for the time being she glanced around at everyones workbooks before tilting back down toward her own. Even with everyone sat at the table, drinks and snacks aplenty, very little was actually getting done aside from the one of them. And even then his focus seemed to be cracking somewhat, or that was what she thought given momentary flicker of expression upon Akira's face. Maybe he'd sussed out a problem or something, there wasn't really a need to ask.
Instead she tried, keyword 'tried', to focus on her own textbook once again. Futile at best.

Soon enough came Caitlin's cry of hunger. Hunger... didn't exactly work that way, but carry on. She wasn't exactly hungry herself given she'd ate a decent breakfast, but when people became distracted... Ah! Didn't she still have that thing from her part-time job the other day? Her boss had told her not to worry about using it if she didn't want to, though if it was for her friends?

"Um.. Actually I have a table reservation for Hanabi Kitchen from Haruomi-sensei since his wife is sick and they can't make it." As much as she'd tried to object, when it came down to it being either half a refund or rescheduling for months later she choose to accept her employers goodwill instead. Albeit a slight bit awkwardly. "It's supposed to be good given there's a several months long waiting list."

10.png

"Right? I could really go for a huge Big Bang Burger right about now... Think they'll delivery at this time?" Since they were both now on the same page, for the moment anyways, Ryuji went ahead and picked up his own phone to seemingly check if said burger chain did deliver. Even if they didn't, Ryuji wasn't going to complain about having to walk. "Let's see... Big Bang Burger... Oh! There! Found you~" Without even waiting for anyone else's opinion he was already mumbling to himself as he searched up the website.

"Ehhh. Isn't Hanabi that crazy expensive book in advance place?" Ryuji had only half heard what Ichiko had to say initially with how engrossed he'd become in his phone. "Ain't that kinda crazy impossible on a poor student's budget?" It'd be damn sweet if it were possible either way. Still, he brushed the thought off without a second thought, and believing his point had been made he didn't even pay attention to the quiet girl leaving the table for a moment until she came back with a fancy piece of paper.

"Oi oi.. I thought you were kidding! Seriously!?" Somehow he avoided choking on air out of shock and practically snatched the sheet from Ichiko's hands to inspect just like a detective would. "Dude.. Is this really real? Hey! Look look!" There he went, arm slung around Akira's shoulder waving the reservation in his face.
