On February 19, 1945. US Marines of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Divisions launched a daring amphibious assault on the tiny little volcanic island of Iwo Jima. What stood in there way of taking the island was 22,000 Japanese troops under the command of Tadamichi Kuribayashi. The Americans needed this island for 2 reasons. 1 they needed an airbase for their bombers and because radar on the island could spot our bombers and warn mainland Japan of the oncoming bombing. With these reasons it was clear this island needed to be taken. And so on February 19, 1945 US marines set forth for the island. It started with an early morning pre landing naval shelling before marines landed on the beaches. When they did they found it to be quiet. The Japanese guns were not firing down upon them. Many marines thought that the shelling had killed off all enemy resistance. But actually Kuribayashi had ordered his men to allow the marines to come ashore and move inland before opening fire. The naval shelling didn't do much either. Kuribayashi had also ordered his men to dig a network of tunnels underground. When the shelling started they took cover within them until the bombing stopped. As the marines moved farther inland the Japanese guns barked to life. The first wave of marines sustained heavy causalities. The quiet landing soon turned to a slaughter. But the marines kept up and pushed inland and silenced the guns. The marines had landed on Iwo and now it was time to start off the 35 day campaign to take the island.
