  The only reason that Johnny isn't on the front lines in WW2 is because they deemed him emotionally unstable.

  and super-loving.

• History
  
  Johnny's father fought in World War 2, and Johnny wanted to follow in his footsteps, though he was denied entry into the military for Vietnam, on the basis that he was emotionally unstable, and liable to lose it if he fought in the war. He was sent to Alcatraz, instead.
  
  
  He quickly fell in love with one of the inmates, Sophia Ricthofen, daughter of Edward Richtofen. He protected her, indirectly, as best as he could, even going so far as killing an inmate that bragged that he would rape Sophia.
  
  
  Anyone that threatens Sophia has Johnny to worry about.
