Player Character Roster
- Coustik, the Rockstar Vigilante

The character sheet I provide here represents the bare minimum requirements of what I want in a character sheet. Many players enjoy going into detail or using BBCode to further represent their character and I have no qualms with that (I often do so myself). I do, however, provide two variations of a basic CS to allow some minimalist formatting for those that don't feel like doing it themselves, but also don't want to just scroll down a list filling out forms.

[ Riku Jiro | Male | 33 | Chaotic Good]

Coustik is a sound-based vigilante utilizing a headless, traveler guitar. Coustik is one of the more well-known vigilantes in the city due to the inherent nature of his Quirk which requires that he play his guitar to emit sound. Coustik is also known for playing music at various bars, clubs, and even in the streets as a public display of skill. As a Vigilante, he rarely stays in one place for long and prefers to travel, meet people, and just generally have a good time. That said, he is often known for arriving in an area and offering help to the local heroes and vigilantes in places that otherwise are neglected.

PersonalityRiku is a fairly cocky, charismatic soul best described as a lovable vagabond. His confidence generally comes from his music, not so much his actual persona. To those that know him, he's much a different person upon picking up an instrument. This is in part due to his past, but also more a reflection of how he recovered from the trauma. Prior to realizing he could still use his Quirk through instruments, Riku never actually played much of anything despite the nature of his Quirk. He was focused more on moving forward as a hero or new gadgets for his Quirk, not so much instruments. In fact, he found most instruments to be cumbersome and ineffectual for Hero work. This has all changed in recent years, obviously. Now, he is essentially Quirkless without an instrument and feels powerless, reverting back to a darker mental state before his rehab.

History
Parent(s): Yuri Jiro, Himoka Hiro
Riku is the second son of a audio technician and former singer. While he grew up around music for most of his life, he saw his older sister excel in music just like their mother. She could sing, play, and dance. Despite being musically inclined, Riku never quite touched on the vocals his sister did. He and his younger brother grew up somewhat discouraged by this, but they both managed to find their inspiration elsewhere. For Riku, it was through Pro Heroes. While his sister went on to imitate the music idols of their age, Riku looked up to perhaps the only more influential icons. He grew up during the great era of peace started by Spirita, but that did not mean that Heroes were on the decline. While villains were perhaps lackluster, there was always crime and disaster that those with trained Quirks could help. Not to mention, in their era, Pro Heroes began to compete with each other more and more, making rivals among the ranks and causing dramatic tension which was often televised. Everyone always had a favorite or a faction.

Riku aspired to be a part of that and pushed himself to become a Pro Hero. His Quirk could definitely make him suitable for it and his ambitions pushed him far. He graduated fourth in his class at UA and worked side by side with many companies focused on making hero gear. Riku eventually took a spot under Pro Hero Loudspeaker as a sidekick and found both of them sponsoring many contracts for new gear, often upgraded monthly. Riku found himself taking on several different roles as Boombox as he picked different equipment for every mission depending on what he expected to be the needs. Unfortunately, this era of peace wasn't always so peaceful. Heroes like Loudspeaker and Boombox were often used to coordinate rescue missions due to their communication and utility. It was during one of these that rogue villains were looking for soft targets, heroes not quite acquainted to combat. Riku wasn't a stranger to combat, but his equipment was not meant for it. Luckily, Loudspeaker did not suffer from the same gear-oriented limitations. Less luckily, Riku didn't make it out unscathed.

Riku had taken multiple burns and concussive blows to his body in addition to his earlobes being entirely singed off. He was hospitalized for roughly two months due to the severity of the burns and surgeons stated there was no hope of his ears simply returning. Riku later had plastic surgery to at the least have his ears appear normal, although faint scars do exist. Riku went into a pretty considerable depression at this time. He found himself only self-loathing more through drinking. It wasn't until he met back with is older sister that there was even a slight turn around. The world of idols had slighted her as she grew older. Her five minutes of fame was over and despite her talent, she had become a back-up nobody. She, too, went through her own depression and herself only climbed out of it through the music she defined herself with.

This is how Riku found himself again, too. And, his family. It was true that for many years he harbored a dull resentment towards his sister for her talent, but that had faded as he became a Hero. Now that resentment was replaced with a close bond and appreciation as she showed him what brought their family together in the first place. And, as he found himself again, he found that his Quirk had not entirely gone. It had changed. Mutated, maybe. Awakened, if stretched. In any case, he found that he could still amplify sound through an acoustic guitar, and later through next to any stringed instrument he played. He honed this skill using the same training he did with his original Quirk and eventually found himself with an array of new abilities that focused less on switching between "gear" and more on being good with what he had. He even found that his Quirk grew stronger when his body at the least was in direct contact with the output jack that his earjack would once use.

It took years, but Riku trained himself to be as effective as next to any rookie hero. He argued that he was even better than he was as Boombox. Despite this, hero agencies were tentative to hire him or even give him an opportunity. Some were hesitant to believe that he had anything to his Quirk. Some were hesitant to hire him on due to his history with depression -- he had spent months in therapy with actual psychiatrists. Some didn't feel his Quirk at its current state of needing a guitar and requiring skillful playing was meant for field work. Whatever the case, Riku was denied until he simply became fed up with the Pro Hero scene and decided to do the work on his own... as a vigilante.

QuirkEarphone Jack grants its users long, controllable earlobes that work like headphone cables. During his brief time as a hero, his earlobes were cut off by a villain.

Awakening / Mutation was the result of the trauma and eventual recovery of losing his earlobes which were the extension of his Quirk. Over the years of recovery, Riku found he was able to amplify the sound waves of most musical instruments he came into contact with as long as said instrument still contained an output jack. Riku has created a special adapter (3.5mm, standard output jack) that attaches to a cable that wraps around his wrist. With physical contact established via these means, he can amplify instruments he plays for various effects. Riku can act as his own amplifier and simply change levels of volume, tone frequencies, distortion, compression, so on and so forth, or he can use his Quirk to create sonic booms capable of cracking concrete. The capabilities of this Quirk are limited to and affected by the skill at which he plays, but the trade-off is often certain forms of utility that weren't originally present in the Quirk. Riku can use his Quirk to foster creativity, bravery, and energize others, making him suitable for team-oriented work.

Lion Chord is a special move of Riku that uses a series of power chords to recreate a roar. This roar can temporary pause or paralyze weak targets.

Slide is a technique allowing Riku to quickly move in any one direction with growing speed and distance depending on the rate his fingers go down the fretboard.

Feedback-boom is a special move making use of incredibly high volume, distortion, and feedback that results in a powerful, deafening screech that can create craters when focused in a single area.

Spiderwalk is special move involving a fast-paced melody down the fretboard that creates multiple small concussive blasts.

Name:
Esko Watanabe
Code Name:
NiteLyfe
NiteLyte
Age:
23

Parents:
(Mother) Akiko Watanabe

Foster Parents (the ones he settled on)
(Mother) Haruko Kobayashi
(Father) Kenzou Kobayashi

History:
Akiko Watanabe had enough on her plate before Esko was even born. Unable to further her education and getting with the wrong crowd of people, she was struggling to stay afloat before she learned she was pregnant with the child of her ex-boyfriend. Unable to pay the rent of her apartment, she moved back in with an old flame from high school and joined his life of crime.
By the time Esko was born, his mother and Dave were dating. It wasn't the best situation or environment for a growing child but his mother did everything she could to take care of him. As Esko got older and his quirk started to develop, it became harder for Esko's mother to keep him out of Dave's exploits. It started small with just having the small child keep watch with his mother, or just creating a distraction for Dave to do whatever business he needed to do to provide for the four of them. Then Esko slowly started to take bigger roles in these heists and would get sent out to deliver some goods. Of course, Esko was a child and no matter how much guidance Dave gave him, he would get caught.

Being the man Dave was, he dipped and left the pair to the cops. Esko was put into Foster care and his mother would have to face jail time for "child endangerment" and acting as an accomplice to Dave. This did not sit well with ten-year-old Esko, and he rebelled. He'd lash out at his foster parents, run away and sell off the foster family's possessions for extra cash-- basically he was more trouble than he was worth and would often bounce around to different foster homes. There was one cop in particular who would always be on Esko's case, and it was the same cop that had caught him that very night; Daichi Sakamoto.

He would always be the one to haul him back to whatever foster home he was staying at, and if he ever got in trouble by hanging with the wrong crowd of people he'd bail him out. Esko never really understood why this man continued to pester him but it came to a point where he decided to finally try to settle in with one of his foster homes just so he could be near the cop. If Daichi was going to bother him, he would bother Daichi . . . So that's what he did.
Similar to how he'd trail around Dave, he'd follow Daichi around to try to get into whatever he was doing which of course often had Daichi having to drive him back to wherever he had to be since "this was no place for a child". Being told no only made Esko want to do it even more and a compromise was made; Esko could go on the ride alongs as long as he did his school work and didn't get into any trouble.

If it wasn't for the fact that police aren't allowed to use their quirks as heroes can, Esko probably would have followed Daichi's lead and joined the police force . . . Which what he started to idolize before learning that police can't use their quirks so Esko shifted gears and started to actually apply himself in his studies so he could become a hero.

It wasn't that he really had some major turn around where he suddenly wanted to dedicate his life to others, it just happened that this would allow him to use his quirk and if it helped someone that was just a bonus. That didn't really fly well when he finally got into a hero academy (thanks to Daichi's help), and even though his quirk was strong his attitude wasn't exactly "hero material".
Ill-tempered, refusal to listen to orders and reckless behavior had caused him to be kicked out of the Hero Academy. This seriously pissed Esko off and instead of trying again at another school, he outright quit and did an assortment of odd jobs to get by once he was old enough to just leave his foster family. Over time Esko just stopped caring and started to fall into old habits. He'd use his quirk whenever he wanted to and if a chance to swipe a wallet came up, he'd take it.

Then the change happened. While swiping a few chips into his bag at a local convenience store along with some cold medicine, someone burst in and demanded the money in the cash register. They were waving their glowing hands around, threatening to blow anyone who moved to bits-- the usual robbery stuff, Esko didn't really care as long as he got his chips. Just look away and ignore it . . . Some idiot decided to be a hero and the robber was starting to get pissed off. What caused Esko to dash forward to join that idiot is beyond him but that's what happened and it snapped him out of his moping fit.

The owner didn't even care that Esko clearly had some items in his bag that he had no intention of paying for, nor did anyone care that he used his quirk in public. He slowly adopted the new persona of NiteLyte and due to his quirk's draw of powers, centered around select areas. Sometimes he'd just roam the streets and show some thugs their place, or he'd catch a girl's hat flying off in the wind-- really just an excuse for him to use his quirk. This made him somewhat of a Local Hero in his area with some people being aware of his identity but unwilling to share it sort of deal. It was pretty easy for his officer friend to catch on to Esko's new antics . . . especially when he left literal tags everywhere.
A brief scolding was all he'd ever get, even when he poked in on cases in his area since while it is technically illegal, Daichi was proud of him for doing something good with his powers.
Personality:
Esko is free-spirited, never one to be held down for long and carries enough rebellious energy to spare. A no is a challenge and a "do this" is not his priority, he just really doesn't like being told what to do or where to go in life. This attitude is only coddled by his quirk's ability to quite literally let him run around where ever he wants and say "fuck gravity". His pride and joy is his quirk, and his ego is completely centered around his abilities to the point of arrogance when questioned if he should really be doing whatever plan he drums up. He's hard to chew kind of person, but over time with knowing someone he can start to mellow out after testing them through the storm.

While it is in his nature to act out against orders, he can be reasoned with if a good argument is made. It's a hassle, but he isn't stubborn enough to ignore logic or benefits. Esko despite his temper is actually a very curious type, especially when concerning police cases-- if it wasn't for the fact he couldn't use his quirk to solve problems as a cop, he would have actually enjoyed taking up an investigative role on the police force. Inquisitive by nature, when something doesn't seem right to Esko he will never let it rest until he gets to the meaning of it. A certain cop friend of his calls this being "Stubbornly curious". His tactics may not always be the most professional but if it takes his interest he isn't going to give up on it.

Most of the work Esko does is an excuse to use his quirk, whether it's stopping a crime in progress or grabbing a balloon before it flies away, as long as he can use his quirk he doesn't mind. At the moment he is doing good but just easily he can be swayed to use his quirk for good, he could be swayed to do others since he generally doesn't care or have much of a heart for justice. Something he does care about a lot in making certain people he cares about disappointed in him. He comes off as an aloof ass most of the time and has an "I don't give a fuck" attitude, but he does recognize the good in people. It's less that he wants to push people away and more of that he is both cautious and embarrassed by being affectionate to people since it isn't something he is used to. He doesn't really hate everyone and even if most of the work he does is an excuse to use his quirk, he does enjoy having an effect on people in the sense his direct action causes a change in what could have happened.

Appearance:
2b23dc1a8f2d07156aa89482edf571bb.jpg

Costume:
Black surgical mask with glow in the dark neon patterns
Black Global Vision goggles decorated in glow in the dark neon paint
Specialized skater shoes . . . Black but lights up when he is charged up
Fingerless gloves that are black with glow in the dark paint

Essentially he wears black clothing that is coated in glowing designs that seem to light up more when he is charged. A sleeveless hoodie and whatever pants he has on makes up his costume along with the mask and goggles. The eyewear is only used when he is going to make a speedrun and usually just rests on his head or pocket any other time.

Alignment:
Chaotic Neutral

Quirk:

Light Draw - Esko is able to harvest energy from artificial light sources to boost his movement. By taking in light, Esko can move quickly, jump high and even hover. His Quirk is limited to artificial light sources that are active and he is unable to retain this energy properly even when it isn't being used. Strong hits and time will deplete energy gathered and Esko will have to continually draw from an active light source to keep up with his own Quirk Usage.

Light-Based Quirks have a fulfilling interaction with Esko's Light Draw. Quirk light makes him feel refreshed and has somewhat of a calming effect in tangent with the energy boost . . . Though it's hard to go off running around when one feels like basking in the glow.

Neon Sign Lighting also has a special interaction in the sense that in tangent with his movement boost, energy pulse through his limbs and create a stronger impact when he strikes. These types of lighting aren't common so he isn't used to this surge of power with his speed boost.

+ There are markings on his bodies that are hard to see when he isn't powered up. Once he draws in energy, the markings on his arms light up with the energy; the intensity shows how much power he has stored. The light can shift colors based on his mood passively but he can send pulses of colors much like a night light on command if he has energy.

Skills:
Close up Combat
Grafitti art

Equipment:
Flashlight (not usable with his quirk)
Spraypaint

Miscellaneous:
- Aito Watanabe (Esko's Foster Brother) is currently working as a sidekick (they are not on good terms)
- Esko's mother got out of jail during his "moody era" and returned to her work as a "Dancer"
- Esko's original name NiteLyfe was originally used when he was at the hero academy and would have been his villain name if he went through on turning to crime. It was later changed to NiteLyte based on some comments from the locals and as a way to separate himself from the hero academy
- Esko's mother Quirk is to light up. This paired nicely with Esko to charge him up to go on speedruns for Dave but was also used to comfort him. The reason behind him becoming calm from Light-based Quirks may actually be a learned trait, rather than something part of his quirk.
