i was never quite sure if it was possible to block ranged attacks without a stunt using a melee, brawl or MA. is there anywere in the rules that covers that specifically?

 Officially, Brawl and MA can't parry ranged attacks w/o stunting or charming, but it's not unreasonable to interpret that this is true only when the character is using said ability when unarmed. A suitable brawling aid or MA weapon should remove that limitation.
