In the late summer of 2017, the first reports began to surface of the spread of flu symptoms among the poor and rural population of third world farming nations. The US based Civil Emergency Defense Agency (CEDA) immediately began to track the spread of the virus. In its early days, the virus was nothing but a new flu, killing the old and immune deficient in areas with little access to public sanitation and healthcare. Throughout the poor, hot, and humid, rural areas of the world, the disease spread. More and more reports appeared as the virus was tracked to appear in multiple countries, while ultimately avoiding the first world, and thus avoiding public attention in those first world countries. Still, CEDA began to take action to secure and tighten international travel to and from America, banning government employees from certain nations temporarily, and subliminal increasing the level of public awareness in infections, pushing people toward flu vaccines.

From the rural areas, the disease spread into the urban population centers of third world nations, reeking havoc on poor communities. Violent crimes increased, those who committed them were banished, executed, or treated like aggressive criminals, losing their minds behind bars and murdering anyone left in a cell with them in a violent fit of rage. As soon as the cable news got wind shortly after, warnings of the flu spreading through international waters still seemed far away, but alarming. While most of American society continued on without a hitch, the paranoid few took the news as the damning warning sign it was and began to prepare.

Five days ago: The pathogen begins to infect cattle in the US, causing them to fall ill. Beginning in the rural areas, the virus quickly spreads to the city as more and more people call off sick with the flu. Patient Zero of the US was an older farmer from New England who had recently returned from a livestock festival where he was believed by CEDA to have purchased infected livestock. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Fairfield, New York with symptoms of fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, aches, and inability to maintain focus. Shortly after his arrival in the hospital, he is Quarantined. The virus called the "Green Flu" begin to spreads throughout the Northeast as more people stay home sick, then it all comes to a head.

Martial law is declared as reports of infected individuals becoming violent begins to surface. Sanctuary cities and Quarantine Zones are immediately set up in infected cities to separate the infected from the healthy. The National Guard has been sent in to patrol and kill infected those acting violent and aggressive towards others and protect those who act normal. The CEDA releases these official instructions:

1. Fill your home with perishable foods and water bottles.
2. Fill your bathtub with water.
3. Terminate all owned livestock
4. Barricade your home and use plastic sheets to seal vents and prevent unwanted air flow into the home.
5. Do not interact with any infected individuals.
6. Do not attempt to help those who are showing symptoms of Green Flu.
7. Do not go outside unless absolutely necessary.
8. If you believe you are infected, please report to the closest Quarantine Zone for treatment.
9. If you are unable to find sanctuary in your homes, report to Sanctuary Centers with a government issued ID.
10. Tune into the CEDA frequency and wait for official instruction.

People's bodies react different to the introduction of the virus. This is the breakdown of the different types of reaction to the virus. At this point, this is not common knowledge that these types of reactions to the infection exist. If you want your character to have special access to this knowledge, please go over with me exactly what that entails.
**At this point, special infected are not widely know and over all unseen but you can feel free to bring in at any point.**

Affected (80% of population) - can contract the Green Flu whether it be from bites, boomer bile, smoker smoke, and various other exposures by infected individuals.
- approx. 10% of affected die from their flu symptoms.
- approx. 1% become special infected.
Resistor (12% of population) - resistant to most strains of the disease. Only becomes infected and turns when bit by another infected. Infected most often attack with scratching, hitting, and kicking which don't cause the virus to spread toward a resistor.
- approx. 2% become special infected.
Immune (5% of population) - possess a gene which fully blocks the disease from entering the body.
Carriers (3% of population) - possess a gene which makes the disease's symptoms mute when in a carriers body, but can be spread to a vulnerable person via exposure to an infected carrier.

Common Infected:

Enraged infected humans. Despite still being alive their metabolism and need for food has slowed dramatically down. They don't often bite unless the opportunity presents itself. Their most common form of attack is an sporadic and violent thrashing attack.

Boomers:

Boomers generate bile to throw up at will. The bile not only attracts common infected, but also spread the virus.

Chargers:

Chargers do percisely that, charge straight at you. Once they've locked on, they can't stop until they hit something. If the charger manages to grab on, it begins to to slam the target.

Hunters:

Hunters literally hunt and stalk their prey, giving a raptor-like screech before they pounce. Their primary method of attack is their jagged nails.

Jockeys

Jockeys jump onto their victim's back and ride them like a horse clawing, pulling, and occasionally biting their head spreading the infection.

Smokers

Smokers use their long tongue to pull people in and scratch at them. When they die, they explode into a puff of smoke, spreading the virus.

Spitters

Spitters produce highly acidic saliva that it propels at people, covering the ground in the burning acid. The stomach acid spreads the virus.

Tanks

Tanks are terrifying.... just look at them. They smash things/

Witches

Witches constantly cry, sitting and rocking at night and walking around aimless sobbing during the day. Turn off the light and stay quiet when around them. They moved fast.
