Origins of Molythermia

(synthetically generated message for all SONS volunteers before leaving the chamber)

artleo.com-4860.jpg

Frozen New York.

“Hello, and welcome to the future. This is a synthetically generated message to inform you’ve been in cryogenic sleep for 200 years, and it's now the year 2189. The American Anti Molythermia Organization apologizes for delaying the awakening date by 150 years, but a few complications happened and this was a necessary act to make sure you're prepared for this. As you already know, you've volunteered to undergo an intensive genetic treatment in cryogenic sleep to help giving the world a better future. Before giving you the details of your genetic modifications, let me remind you of the Molythermia pandemic that brought the world to a new ice age exactly two centuries ago and how it affected what the world is today.”

V02ehDI.jpg

“As you very well remember being informed about before being put into cryogenic hibernation, the patient zero was a Siberian Husky, in Alaska. His owner, an eskimo, noticed pink spots around his left ear, which had turned into pink ulcers all around the dog’s body 3 days later. The owner also noticed that his eyes had changed colour, into a deep mixture of yellow and orange, and the animal showed aggressive behaviours. He prepared to take his Husky to a small, but civilized, town and see if he could get any help. But when he was preparing to set off, his dog bit him, and his wife immediately sacrificed the animal upon seeing what happened. The eskimo searched for a doctor, but he couldn't detect anything wrong with him. Soon, he begun to show similar symptoms to his dog, and a few days later he was behaving psychotically, and killed his wife.”

“And this was how the pandemic started. Soon, thousands of cases of the disease, later named Mylothermia - something as “infectious temperature” in Greek - appeared through Alaska and the north of Canada. After numerous researches, scientists discovered it originated on canines, and when the eskimo’s Husky bit his owner the virus somehow modified itself to not only infect others by blood and saliva contact, but also by air, in cold weather. It infects skin, eye and brain cells, causing its symptoms, but different from other viruses, the Mylothermia’s can survive without a host cell, with only one requisite: the air particles mustn’t vibrate, in order not to kill the virus. When the ulcers appear and expose themselves to cold air, the viruses float around until they find a new host or are killed by particle vibrations, infecting more people.”

“The epidemic continued spreading more and more through the cold areas of North America, but the U.S. president mostly ignored the threat of the disease, simply taking normal anti-epidemic measures, despite the infection rate of Mylothermia. Meanwhile, a private German company, which has mainly funded by the organization that would turn into AAMO, created the prototype of a bulky internally heated suit called Thermoarmor, which would be frequently upgraded and sold by AAMO and other companies later on. Months later, in the next year, it was discovered that the virus evolved and now could dimish the vibration of air particler themselves, and soon the disease gradually spread through the world, decreasing its average temperature and slowly bringing it to a modern ice age. The American Anti Mylothermia Organization was founded, and they revealed the project its predecessor was working on: hundreds of cryogenic chambers spread through the U.S. Most part of them where placed in Baltimore, nearby Washington D.C., where you are right now, but each state capital had at least 2 cryochambers. Ordinary people from all over the world were recruited to be put in cryogenic sleep for 50 years, where they would be genetically enhanced to resist extreme cold temperatures, having a thermal sensation of approximately 0º C/32º F in -40º weather, while annulling the effect in higher temperatures. Besides this, they also would be modified to have a stronger immune system, only be infected by the Molythermia virus by blood/saliva, as it was in its original state, although infection was still possible, and have combat skills of an exceptional soldier, whoever the person was. And these men and women, are you."

"Your job is to gather information on the MT virus, in hope to research a cure. The world is engulfed in ice and snow, now with a -40º C/F average temperature, and except for military almost all technological advancement stopped. You will receive a handgun of your choice and a device to take notes on the disease equipped with a radio and other functionalities upon leaving the cryochamber. May God be with you all.”

Since the ice age caused by the Mylothermia pandemic, the world changed drastically. Society was shattered, new nations and cultures appeared, and others vanished. The U.S.’s remnants were named the Free American Federation, adopting a libertarian system and a new coin named New Age Dollar (NA$). All kinds of fuels were intensely sought out, and they became preciosities in a frozen world. AAMO, the fastest-growing private company due to its focus on the combat against the disease, had a big involvement in the creation of the F.A.F., and still has ties to this day. Along the course of its history, F.A.F. lost the states of Arizona, New Mexico, almost the entire Texas except for the extreme north and the south of California to Mexico, besides losing Washington and Oregon to Canada. But not everything was a defeat, as Ontario was taken from Canada in exchange for the two American states after an agreement and attached to the country.

A road in Washington D.C.

Although cultural manifestations such as music, fashion, etc, haven’t changed much from the 20th century’s 80s (and neither did technologies that mainly affect only civilian lives, like TVs and Walkman’s), military desenvolvement is at its peak, with technological weapons and especially with Thermoarmors and Thermomechs, which are the only way to venture into the wasteland without risking being infected by the deadly Molythermia virus.

Hub in Boston, Massachusetts.

southdale_center_1956.preview.jpg

As soon as the freezing of the planet was seen as inevitable, nations from all over the world tried to find a way to protect their citizens. The U.S., with the aid of AAMO, made the Hub Project, consisting of Hubs spread across the country, which basically are cities inside a heated large metallic building (sometimes dug underground) that simulates the pre-ice age world’s seasons and weather. The project started, and the Washington Hub, in Washington D.C., along with a couple other units, were ready to receive citizens less than a month after the pandemic took over the world. While the other Hubs were being built and the existing ones being improved, a considerable amount of people were dying or being infected, which made the, now F.A.F., government create temporary underground shelters, but even these weren’t secure enough. Lots of them had problems, disabling the heating systems and infecting entire groups of people. Despite the problematic shelters, the rest of them went relatively well, and after a year there were enough Hubs to shelter most people.

Transport of multiple people across Hubs was made by Transport Thermomechs, giant quadrupedal robots with enough space to carry 200 people or more inside, armed with a rocket launcher and 2 machine guns. Transport Thermomechs were always escorted by Attack Thermomechs, bipedal robots with space only for the pilot and gunner defaultly, but with significantly better weaponry, carrying a rocket launcher with two times more capacity than TT’s, 6 machine guns, a flamethrower underneath its cockpit and a railgun sometimes replaced by a pod with space for 6 people, built specifically for rescue missions.

1375943665_014.jpg

The Hubs continued prospering through the frozen America, and despite few cases of virus leaks, the project was overall successfull, and only a minimal amount of people still live out in the wasteland. The Hub life continued normal for the citizens, while the F.A.F. Army and AAMO soldiers fought to protect them. But in 2018, bandits and raiders from all over the contry banded together "for the union of the world", forming the Raiders. Their methods consisted of raiding Hubs' resources, using them against government and AAMO forces. Numerous Raiders-like organizations appeared through the whole world, all of them working to unite the planet, making "a second Pangea", claiming that working together would be the best way to combat Molythermia. While this might sound like a noble objective, their barbaric ways to make the government listen to them simply couldn't be ignored, and they were intensely fought against. In January 6th, 2019, a group of Raiders invaded the Washington Hub with stolen Attack Thermomechs and Thermoarmors, breaking through Section 4B - and later Section 4A - and forcing civilians to evacuate, with some dying or having to be sacrificed later to avoid spreading the disease, most of them belonging to S4B. But F.A.F. and AAMO forces commanded by AAMO officer Paul Davidson were able to hold them back, and the commander was killed in action, dying as a hero. His nickname "Multi-Eyed Cyclope", given for being able to see many different enemies on the battlefield despite having lost his left eye in the beginning of his job, served as inspiration for the default Thermoarmor officer helmet, some decades later. Since the incident, known as 01/06, or the 2019 Hub Attack, Raiders were seen as a major threat, only behind Mylothermia itself.

The nature of Molythermia

virus-tb.jpg

The MT virus.

The Molythermia is caused by the MT virus. When the infected human reaches a certain maturity, some viruses float out of the body through open cavities, wounds, pores, etc. In other words: Spread of infection is certain. The virus travels through air, until it is killed by high air particles vibration (heat) or it reaches a new host, entering by the same way it left its previous body. After the microrganisms lodge into skin, ocular or brain cells in a significant amount, heating them would kill the host, the time of the process changing based on the temperature.

Although the MT has an absurdly high mutation rate, there are a few characteristics that seem to be default. They are the apparition of pink spots, ulcers, and other kinds of anomalies on the skin, which usually are the first symptoms to appear even if eye or brain cells are affected earlier, and evolve to an entirely pink skin with even worse anomalies; the infected’s entire eyes turn orange, and veins become more apparent; - it’s also important to notice they become more sensitive to light as time goes by, being extremely sensitive after a few decades, but also greatly improving their vision during night - and, most importantly, the brain is affected, turning the host into a monster (more details about infected’s intelligence following). They aren't able to die of age either, and a few individuals have been infected since the pre-pandemic age.

The CAA (Censorship American Association) prohibits anyone from using images of infected in public nanonet space due to their extremely gruesome appearance, so they won't be shown here.

Infected variations:

Common Infected (Common)

The most abundant of all variations. They are the basic form of infected, and all the other varieties and compared to them as the default. The common infected’s intelligence, like any other’s (besides the intelligent infected’s) varies from slightly retain the host’s, having an extremely low IQ but still being able to talk and use weapons in a rudimentary way, to being a mindless monster who only roams around waiting for prey to appear. Also as with all other variations (except for certain cases of intelligent infected), they are highly aggressive despite not having to eat anything and attack in first sight.

Spitting Infected (Spitter)

Spitters are identical to common exemplars, except for the fact that, due do the presence of a certain gene, they can spit acid from their mouths from long distances, and are slightly physically weaker than their cousins. The acid isn't very powerful, neither can it infect humans, but successive attacks might be able to create some havoc.

Running Infected (Runner)

Runners, like Spitters, are caused by a different gene and are physically weaker than Commons (and also weaker than Spitters themselves), but instead of being able to produce acid, their running speed and jumping height is abnormal. This can be a big danger for folks with weapons that require steady aiming, but stopping them can be quite simple with the right skills and guns.

Accumulated Infected (Doubler)

These bulky and though infected are formed after a Spitter and one or more Commons, Spitters and/or Runners go through the process of fluid fusion: The Spitter’s acid drool engulfs part of its body together with another, and if it remains like that for some time (as when simply staying idle, next to each other), the dry liquid attaches a being to the other. After this, the MT viruses being to communicate between themselves through the acid, and the infected is considered to be only one, despite having two or more bodies. Not only the dry fluid is very hard, but the substance, upon solidifying, mutates the infected themselves to become more resistant, and by consequence slower. Also, of course, every Doubler is able to spit acid as an attack.

Intelligent Infected (Molykin)

A curious case, this variant is caused by a rare gene, found in only 1.1% of the American population. The hosts, after being contaminated and transitioning, retain their entire memories, characteristics about their personalities, and may even be smarter than before, while they go through the same body changes as common infected. The Molykin, as they're called by more prejudicial people, behave like psychotic humans, and whether they're the same person as before or a completely different being, is a seemingly eternal debate. The most famous Molykin, Thomas “Enlightened” Brown, holds the philosophy that healthy humans and intelligent infected should separate themselves from each other, and many other infected (and people) agree with him, but the majority still wishes for the destruction of each other.

Queen Infected (Mother/Queen)

An even rarer variation, happening only to 0.4% of infected, and just females. The infected grows absurdly big, having to stay idle in a single place, and it acquires the ability to give birth to Commons, Spitters, and Runners, without the need of a host. It is extremely resistant, hard to be killed even with fire, and the Queen releases a pheronome that controls all lesser infected nearby to her will, possibly affecting Molykins too, depending on their self-control against instinctual urges.

The OANGMO (Offical American Non-Governmental Medical Organization), funded in 2002, was made especially for researching on the Molythermia disease. But despite all their efforts, the virus changes faster than their limitations allow them to research. All data about the infection acquired by SONS operatives will be sent to OANGMO and analyzed. All discovered symptoms will be displayed in the Party tab, in order to increase awareness and prevent subjects from turning into infected before being sacrificed or isolated. The approximated infection rate through biting will also be shown after sufficient analysis is done, and it’ll be become more accurate as infected keep being killed and analyzed. Finally, all SONS volunteers' genes were modified so they don't contain the ones that cause intelligent and queen infected transition.

Thermoarmor: Models and functionalities

The Thermoarmor (sometimes called Thermosuit) is a warmed armored suit with extra functionalities developed by private German company Unzevo (Unserer Zeit Voraus) in 1988. Their CEO, Othmann Auttenberg, foresaw what would definitely be a disaster for cold regions, and likely affecting other areas too, bringing him to make a suit that would be efficient to keep the disease away while travelling through ice lands, as he discovered the virus could only survive in the cold before it was officially confirmed. But he couldn’t imagine the proportions Mylothermia would take, making the Thermoarmor even more useful.

Later, Unzevo merged with the American enterprise Co-Tech, and the American Anti-Molythermia Organization - AAMO - was formed. The merger was already in their plans, and a handful of posters for Co-Tech’s project were already done. Check tab “The SONS Project” for more info.

The /dee/vice 12B DeLux, on the shelf of an AAMO Store.

The /dee/vice is a gadget produced by AAMO with a holographic interface, used to access the nanonet, see maps, measure combat-related stats using the ROMAN system, listen to music, etc, with the /dee/OS operational system. The /d/v only allows the registered owner of it to turn the /dee/vice on, briefly checking the user’s eyes and denying access in case they don’t match with the registered ones. Released in 1991, it uses the “nanonetting” system to send and receive data. Inspired by Molythermia, AAMO’s C.E.O., the Doctor, had the idea of making a portable device that would send nanomachines containing data into the air, that would be picked up by another /d/v, and be transcripted using the reliable Lockdown Security System. These nanomachines would float across, sent in large quantities, at an extremely high speed, and due to the constant reue of them and the introduction of new machines with new /dee/vices it was nearly impossible for them to be lacking. His concept worked, but at first there were inumerous complaints about nanonet malfunctions, resolved later, and making the nanonet practically as reliable as the extinct internet under a decade later.

Nanonet Connection Problems

I’M A SHOP OWNER IN THE CHICAGO HUB. DO YOU AMMO PEOPLE KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO RAISE A WIFE, THREE CHILDREN, AND ONE OF THE FEW DOGS WHO WEREN’T WIPED OUT BY THE DISEASE? ALL MY SHOP’S REQUEST ARE MADE THROUGH ITS WEBSITE IN THE NANONET, AND I IS TAKING 3 OR MORE DAYS FOR SOME CONSUMERS’ REQUESTS TO BE RECEIVED! PEOPLE ARE STOPPING TO BUY AMMUNITION FROM MY STORE! DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS NOW!

Yours Truly,

Erick Thompson

One of the diverse complaint e-mails, an achievement only possible due to AAMO’s democracy.

All field scientists carry a /dee/vice equipped with a researching program, used to analyze samples of viruses, materials, etc. Every SONS operative’s /dee/vice (12C model) will contain the program, to be used to analyze samples of MT viruses and send the reports to OANGMO. The process is automatically done everytime an infected is killed. Some symptoms and characteristics might require more research to be discovered than others.
The SONS Project

i2ohyt8.jpg

Two posters distributed across Washington D.C., Texas, Nevada and California in May, 1989.

The SONS Project (Soldiers: Nostram Salutem) was thought out by Co-Tech, which started development and continued it as AAMO later on. The project was commanded by the Doctor, an illusive and mysterious reclusive tycoon who is said to be over 200 years old, and it recruited people from all over the United States and the world to enter cryochambers (or CCs), and stay in cryostasis inside cryogenic pods for 50 years, having their genes modified by scientists and/or automated machines (and after 11 years only the latter).

The intensive therapy (also recurring to non-genetic methods for a few modifications) included: Cold resistance, also providing a 0° C/32° F thermal sensation in the world’s average temperature of -40° C/F; nanomachines
son that detect higher temperatures, regulating the thermal situation to function like a normal human’s (which is why complete immunity to cold couldn't be achieved, due to technology’s limitations); great combat skills, even for people who have never had any previous experience with fighting; English fluency for people who weren't fluent, otherwise international recruiting would be significantly less useful; and the most important: Immune to catch the MT virus by airborne means, and being resistant to the virus through blood or saliva contact.

As there wasn't much of a need to waste energy heating the whole structure due to the volunteers’ condition, it is only minimally warmed, and all CCs are separated from the world by an airlock equipped with a high-capacity heating system to filter out the MT virus, - only able to be opened by SONS subjects and certain AAMO staff - which has just 0.4% chance of air filtration failure, and an automated system that automatically locks down the cryopod rooms upon failure detection.

8RjYwaP.jpg

A poster in Portuguese circulated around the entire area of Brazil, July, 1989.

“Join the SONS project - To sign up, head to the U.S. embassy closest to your house - Prepare for the awakening day!”

Several doctors, soldiers, businessmen, cooks, unemployed people, and pratically every other career signed up, either for their patriotism, concern about the future of Earth, or both. The only requirements were an age of 18-59, a psychiatric test to assure the subjects didn’t have any mental disorder that could heavily affect the mission, and a clear criminal record in the last two years. Besides this, anybody was allowed to join in.

FreezeTube.jpg

Cryopods in CC #777, Baltimore.

Check the map and the list below for all functioning Baltimore CCs and how many active cryopods are left.

SAulRD5.jpg

#01 [11/12] [D¹] - The first cryochamber prototype. It was built at the top two floors of the Star Dust Building, which agreed to allow the placement of the CC prototype and dislocate the floors’ inhabitants upon payment, and each apartment was equipped with a cryopod. The whole building’s structure was modified to be reinforced, and it was entirely sealed, having an early airlock model implemented to the only entrance. The old model had a failure rate of 12%, and sometime around the 2070’s it broke down, beginning a prompt to lock the cryochamber floors, as the rest of the building was engulfed in snow and the occasional roaming infected.

#06 [08/08] - #06 was the third non-prototype CC, and it was placed next to a med school. The airlock is followed by staircases, which lead to an intact cryostasis chamber.

#12 [04/04] [D²] - Another case of filtering failure, this time with the ventilation shaft, CC #12’s door is located on the back of a building close to the only general store in Baltimore. After exiting the airlock, an elevator leads to a research lab with four infected scientists, already stronger because of the long-term effects of Molythermia, and three cryopod rooms which failed to lock themselves because of the proximity to the virus-expelling scientists, leaving only one protected room, more far away from the others.

#14 [08/08] - Designed in the same way as its “twin”, it only has half of subject capacity, but everything else is practically identical, and without having any filtration error.

#22 [11/12] - Cryochamber 22 was built on an empty house terrain, being one of the few CCs not completely underground, and it has two floors (one underground, connected by a staircase).

#49 [09/09] - Another filter failure example, but this time, not for failing to filter the MT virus: The CC located under a pub didn’t block transgenic seeds of plants able to grow without any nutrients, requiring only air, fallen from a truck passing close by and coming in through a small ventilation shaft. The result was a chamber infested with exotic plants.

#51 [09/10] - CC #51’s entrance is located on the corner of a park. It's composed of a small metallic structure with an airlock and an elevator, and two pod rooms underneath the ground.

#89 [05/05] [D³] - Shrouded in mystery and obscurity, the airlock required to access CC #89’s elevator, on a graveyard, is heavily damaged, and so are the entrance’s security cameras. The elevator itself is seemingly gone, and by gazing down at the long pit that leads to the cryochamber it can be seen that it’s broken apart, making returning from the CC practically impossible. Besides this, there are relates of people hearing infected’s voices echoing from below, claimed to be the souls of the people buried in the cemetery by superstitious folk.

#124 [10/10] - Its entrance is located on the field around Fort Henry, an old fort occupied by AAMO forces, and it consists of a large hatch on the ground, which reveals stairs upon opening.

#666 [3/3] - Number 666’s lead scientist was Stanley Roveloko. The first 3 months went by normally, with the normal cryochamber routine, but Stanley started behaving strangely. He was ruder than usual, didn’t care about researching and making genetic modifications on the subjects, and was obsessed with the CC’s number. About a week later, he murdered all the other researchers with his pistol and attempted to turn off the cryopod system entirely, but the room B4 managed to seal itself to protect the pods. Roveloko then painted almost the whole cryochamber with red spray, and spent the next 3 days walking around the lab and mumbling a word the cameras couldn’t detect, and killed himself.

#776 [06/07] - With its airlock and elevator in the structure of Baltimore’s Washington Monument, CC #776 has three floors, the bottom being slightly bigger and having one pod more. The resident scientists were said to be very patriotic, and the chamber is full of old American flags.

#777 [06/06] [D²] - This cryochamber was built into the main structure of an abandoned power plant, with a single cryostasis pod room, until the year 2094. The mafia gang Basilisk took control of the plant, turning it into a casino and with the CC door facing the entrance, guarded by a few armed guards. They created the “Annual Jackpot”, an event that takes place in the beginning of every January, where a random person is choosen through a lottery, and the winner receives 500,000 New Age Dollars in cash and the mysterious door’s content in case it’s opened in the year he has won.

#909 [08/08] - The cryostasis chamber is dug into a beach, and the entrance facing the frozen sea leads to a MT research laboratory, with two cryogenic pod rooms.

lot 19730301 [4/4] -Lot 19730301 was a lot composed of 20 cryopods, stored inside 5 protected containers on the ship Nom Prétentieux, destined to a cryochamber in New York. They carried 4 active pods equipped with automated machines for genetic therapy during travel each. The ship, though, crashed into an ice formation, and the crew left the containers abandoned, still perfoming the gene therapy all machines were commanded to. As time passed, looters broke into one of them, only to see there were only cryogenic pods inside, and destroy them. Another two malfunctioned and ceased life support, killing the subjects. The last cryopod container to be lost fell into the frozen Patapsco River due to Prétentieux’s old and unstable structure and sank, only leaving 4 functioning pods.

[D] = Dangerous area (the higher the number is, the worse its hazards are, and in consequence it has better loot)
