Fantasy Because it is my Duty Characters

Cyrus of house Aster, age 22

Cyrus is the only child of house Aster, the ruling family of the Isle of Polarix. Groomed to rule by his father from a young age, he is well prepared to face the responsibilities that comes with a crown – as well as the political games necessary to keep it. Cyrus takes a great interest in academic pursuits, such as the arts and sciences, history and military strategies, but less so in physical combat training beyond an average proficiency for swordfighting. He likes to think he makes up for this weakness with caution, as well as his skills in magical shielding/warding and potions. But mainly caution.

Cyrus is calm, collected, and not easily angered. Not exactly shy, but he is reserved and usually mild-mannered. He believes in mutual benefit, and that many conflicts can be resolved without a fight (instead he’s more likely to “get creative” in his “problem solving”). Due to these traits, he sometimes comes across as forgiving, pacifistic, and boneless to strangers or new acquaintances. The more perceptive of these people may revise their opinion upon looking into his track record, however.

Cyrus considers himself a realist, but people close to him may find him somewhat cynical.

King Cadmus (of house Aster)

Father of Cyrus, and current ruler of Polarix. An ambitious warrior king, Cadmus is renown for his multiple conquests of smaller, neighbouring lands all the way up to the border of Prydain. His role in battle, both before and after inheriting the throne, is what enabled Polarix to expand out of its peninsula and into the continents. Cadmus is wise enough to know when to quit, however. He won't attack an opponent that he's unlikely to take down, such as Prydain, under normal circumstances.

Queen Elaine (of house Aster)

Mother of Cyrus. Elaine was born to a fairly well-off family of common blood - an unorthodox match on Cadmus's part, but not protested too much by the people. Elaine is eloquent, witty, and well-read. She also possesses a deadly proficiency in offensive spellcasting, which really doesn't get advertised.

Horatius, age 23

Cyrus's close friend. The son of a lesser lord, Cyrus and Horatius's acquaintance was made purely by chance. Horatius is also a scholar and seems to share all of Cyrus's world views, at least on the surface. He is a true pacifist, somewhat idealistic, and quite guileless.

Helena, age 21

Cyrus's close friend. Helena is a village healer (magic and otherwise), introduced to Cyrus by Horatius. Helena is kind, but also more perceptive and more worldly than Horatius. She is somewhat lacking in decorum, however, and can be crass and unrefined.

Queen Morgan
The Queen of Prydain and head of the Aballac Family. She grew cold after the death of her husband and all the political manoeuvring she does in ruling the country has made her cynical. She is neither beloved by the nor hated, although there's many who believe a woman shouldn't be running the country. She was a practitioner of ice magic until her husband died and she took up a sword.

King Matthew
He died around 10 years before the end of the war by an assassin during an attempt to reach a peace treaty, whose side the assassin was on is unknown. During his short reign, he constantly preached peace and looked for a way out. Outrage at his death kept the war going for another decade, even though his constantly preaching of peace was controversial at the time. He married into the title but was the son of the then King's best advisor. Drayden never knew his father.

Princess Analise
Morgan's younger sister. She is the one who does most of the more mundane work unhindered by politics while Morgan is the Face of the Country making the difficult decisions.

General Alphonse
King Matthew's older brother. He leads the Military. He's a passionate leader and many people look at him as more of a figurehead than the Queen. Yet he can make rash decisions under emotional duress. He's incredibly talented with the sword.

Arthur Aurelianus
A divisive figure, he is an advisor to the crown and gets along well with Analise. He has the countries best interests at heart but he and the Queen are always at odds, perhaps because he is one of the few not afraid to challenge her and cannot twist around her finger. Perhaps it is because he is a proficient spellcaster and practitioner of the dark arts.

Crown Prince Drayden
Age: 23
Drayden was born at the height of the war and the King and Quen were afraid he would get assassinated. They passed him off as stillborn and sent him off to a monastery.
It was only a couple of years ago that he was brought back and reinstated as heir. Since he did not know the King very well, he is less emotional about the war and places a lot of value in human life rather than what he sees as pointless squabbles.
Drayden draws much of his worldview from scriptures he memorised as a child. He is humble, kind and gracious; a personality which pisses off younger brother. He doesn't think much of being the crown prince and would rather live in the shadows but understands that his personality and reluctance is perfect for power and unlike many, views it as a burden rather than a perk.

Ruban Veritian
Age: 24
Drake's best friend and manservant, Ruban is the son of the Steward of the castle, Rohan Veritian.

Princess Anya
Age: 20
The only daughter of the Aballac Family. She has always been a bit of a rebel. She practices a form of alchemy where she uses her long silver hair to form mobile wireframe constructs which act as familiars.

Prince Robrecht
Age: 17
The second son of the Aballac Family who was the heir until Drayden returned. He is a bit ruffled by this and resents Drayden for taking his throne. He has a close relationship with Arthur Aurelianus.

Prince Cortino
Age: 12
The youngest son of the Aballacs. He's significantly younger than his siblings and is affectionately known as Tino. His family is overprotective of him. In an attempt to connect to his father whom he never knew, he is learning healing magic.

Just for keeping track of minor (but probably recurring) characters:

William Caecilius and Francis Walsigny: Cadmus's two most important advisors.
